i saw it few nights ago.
alright, for 1941, this is impressive. very. technicaly. in the shape, the structure and technically.

but the story, the meaning. the sense. it is, i think, weak.
maybe i'm too used to Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa ... and japanese work on deeper levels.
i dunno

who saw that movie ? what do you think of it ? masterpiece ?

Masterpiece

I don't know really why but for some reason it strikes me, the story and how it's told is just amazing to consider the time it was made.

yes. the shape is amazing.
the character of Mr. kane is indeed amazing, but ... as an american movie it didnt show any *spirituality* or *deeper* mechanisms ...

but yes. masterpiece. i agree. orson wells is amazing here. need to watch more.

Orson Wells made the only perfect movie in the history of cinema with Citizen Kane.

how is it perfect for you ?
as i said the story line is not very deep. it's great. yes.
but a movie like " seven samurai " shows deeper characters, stories, emotions, *philosophy*.

also, now that i saw citizen kane, LOLITA the movie has very much the same feeling and style ...

Comparing movies is allways a bit hazardous as everybody has different tastes, I myself can't really compare Seven Samurai and Citizen Kane to each other because they are two very different kind of movies, and now a days I like movies a bit differently because I'm studying to become a movie maker.

Citizen Kane's story of rise and fall is very well written and Wells role as Mr. Kane is just magnificent but it's the cinematography and the technical achievements of the production that for me makes this movie a very special one. Everyone who has seen Citizen Kane should watch RKO 281 it's a movie about the making of CK and it lightens alot of things about the production and the problems that the film went through.

Considering when this movie was made, it was way ahead of its time.

Most movies today use many special effects to make a shit movie sell. Pretty much what modern cinema for the most part has become.  Back in 1941, you had to rely on actual acting a great script and stage presence.

well i'll tryt o catch, if it's as interesting as lost inla mancha was ... id be happy.

well yes, womparing movies is hazardous. but as far as perfect movies ... 7 samurais is closer to perfection imo.

the story of CK is indeed strong and well written. but it is in my opinion less deep and *spiritual* than what the japanese would do. im not saying it's bad. but i was on such a Ozu / Mizoguchi / Godard spree these past months, that CK's story was kinda dull to me Sad

Conan the Barbarian is a perfect movie for what it is.  Wink It's actually very philosophical, and I once found this long essay on its esoteric context. Stuff about ubermenshe, German philosophy, religion, all kinds of stuff were mentioned. Also, Robocop is supposed to be a satire on American culture/crime/corporations from a European perspective. Tons of 80's movies are misunderstood for what they are...

Anyway, Kane is perfect too. Great movies are never finished, they're abandoned (who said this?). A movie doesn't have to be technically perfect to get its point across; it's the point that determines perfection anyway. It's like complaining about a great song having bad production: a good song is good no matter how bad the production is. Kane is special because both the message and the execution were done so well.

I thought that's what the whole movie was about... all he had was wealth, but it amounted to nothing.  It's a simple concept, but it's spiritual, philosophical, and as it's portrayed in the movie relating to his childhood, emotional as well.

Seven Samurai is an amazing movie as well, and the ideas and philosophies presented are more complex and focus on more characters, but they also didn't resound as strongly with me as Citizen Kane.

For you all who liked Citizen Kane, go watch The Third Man. Orson Wells starred on this one too, he didn't direct though, but also a master piece.? yes

Listen to the song Dark Avenger by Manowar. Orson Welles speaks a part in it. Maybe Manowar will be considered the greatest band ever in another 50 years?  rofl
