Dylan, McCartney/Lennon/Harrison, Leonard Cohen was a great choice (kudos to the person above me), John Hiatt, Smokey Robinson, Bowie (especially on Hunky Dory).

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Is there a problem with that, Shotgun?

I know you disagree with everything I say, but do you even know who Nick Cave is or are you just being a cock?

There are other artists in this world besides Axl you know.

Eddie Vedder/Robert Plant/Bob Dylan/John Mellencamp/Bono/Andrew Wood/Cash/Reznor/Dave Mustaine/L. Staley & J. Cantrell/Elton John and Bernie Taupin and yes Prince.

Prince

The question was best lyricist, not best songwriter Tongue
A lyricist is a song writer by definition.

Hmmmm, I know your a massive fan of this waste of skin, but each to their own! Cant abide him myself.

One lyric of his I do like though is  'There are fewer more distressing sights than that, Of an Englishman in a baseball cap'

I tend to agree.

The legend that is Nick Cave

Talking about true lyricists, he's the man. Can't forget Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen either! Pure genius is what those three men have created.

Mnay already mentioned I have to agree with but I'll add:  Thom Yorke, the guy from Modest Mouse, Kanye West, Willie Nelson, Robert HUnter who wrote most of the Dead's lyrics, James Brown, Jagger/Richards, Beck, Bob Marely, James Hetfield, and Ryan Adams.

Oh I've heard plenty of stuff from Nick and the Bad Seeds.  Nick Cave is a strong LYRICIST but I don't find the MUSIC he writes and makes that impressive.  Songwriting is not just writing lyrics, it's composing the music, vocal melodies, which I never particularly found impressive when it came to Nick Cave.  But The Proposition was a pretty good movie Cool

 Tongue

I didn't pay enough attention to the title, I thought it was best songwriters no

In that case I apologize to Locomotive98, Nick Cage is indeed a strong lyricist  peace

Peter Doherty

Hmmmm, I know your a massive fan of this waste of skin, but each to their own! Cant abide him myself.

Pete may be the silliest and the most drugged up fool in music today, but the fact is he makes absolutely brilliant lyrics and poetry.

I don?t know how familiar you are with his work, besides Time For Heroes, but I suggest you to read some of his writings and poems too.

One lyric of his I do like though is  'There are fewer more distressing sights than that, Of an Englishman in a baseball cap'

"He knows it's eating, it's chewing me up, it's not right for young lungs to be coughing up blood" - part is great too.  Wink
