I was telling my friend about this chick I think is cool and hot , was also saying how she likes a lot of my music. So he asks "what kind of music she likes?" I say " Like Rock n' Roll(meaning Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix) and Heavy Metal/Hard Rock." He looks at me like I'm a retard and asks" what like Elvis Pressley?" Then I go "I don't know about that but i meant like 60's and 70's ."  " You mean classic rock, you weren't around back then so you're not allowed to use those words." Ever since then I felt like hitting the fucker in the nose cuz he's an asshole. Well , is it or isn't it okay to use those words. I just feel very free to because I don't like what is considered modern rock, I think its crap.

It's just the generation gap dude.  I'm 19 people seem to stereotype you with the generalisation of what everyone else your age is like.  Since we were not around to enjoy the great music of their time, and the fact the music of our time sucks generally goes against us.  Their anger at today's music is projected onto the people who like it, the age group and all.  Most people i talk to as soon as i say i like rock will blurt out Linkin Park or Metallica.  It is perfectly ok to use those words cos it is what you like dude, by choice and nobody has any right to tell you any different they should be happy you like quality music.

People are so lazy, they expect you to say "rock" instead of "rock n' roll". Even metalheads will call the whole genre "metal", where "heavy metal" would refer to classic bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath as opposed to thrash metal, black metal, death metal etc.

It used to be all metal was heavy, but now there is just "metal" and many subgenres out there. It's just the evolution of music, that's all.

And sadly, Metallica is a great example of a rock band today. Not metal, despite the name. Linkin Park is mallcore.

Rock is Rock n' Roll. Rock n' roll is rock, hard rock, glam rock, punk rock, heavy metal, and everything else in between. Its a blanket for many styles, the working dosnt mean anything, use any terminology you wish.
