I've never been a big winter olympics fan, but I read somewhere that Michelle Kwan was making a comeback and is gonna try and win a gold medal. So I guess I'll watch the figure skating event at least.

As an American, I hate Michelle Kwan's guts.?
Why would you say that? I'm an american, and I dont see the point you are trying to make with that statement. Do you not know a talented and hot piece of ass when you see one? :hihi: In the 98 Olympics, I was glad Tara Lipinski won the gold medal. But i think its cool that Michelle is attempting a comeback for one last shot at glory, and I dont understand why you would judge her so harshly.

The only Winter Olympics sport I love is Hockey. I've been waiting 4 years for this moment, the chance to watch some quality Hockey. The NHL doesn't do it for me, the skating rink is too damn small, things are happening too fast. In the international games, they have a traditional rink, and it rules!

As a North America hockey viewer, wake me up when the REAL game comes back.  Oh wait, even the NHL isn't real hockey anymore.  Never mind.

I don't know what it is about curling that makes me like it so much.  It's boring, and yet I can't look away.  Kinda like televised billiards.

Speed skating is the best event, especially the short-track stuff.  Luge too.  Hell, the only things I don't pay much attention to are cross country skiing, figure skating (oh wait, I already said I don't watch international hockey :D ), and a few others.  It sucks though, I don't have cable right now, so I only see what NBC gives me.

DAMN!!!!!

Who the fuck do the swiss think they are?

Beat the Czechs yesterday in hockey and My country CANADA today!!!! :o

Damnnn!!! good work by Switzerland!!! : ok: my hat is off to you.

The Canadians, Czechs and the States (after losing to Latvia :o ) better get their shit together or it'll be a short, dissapointing tourney for all three countries, fuck Canada hasn't even played a contender yet and Finland looks good this year

The Swiss have been a huge surprise in hockey. We've been pretty good. Our first real game was yesterday against the Czechs... The game took a bit of a nasty turn when Ruutu checked Jagr into the boards with Jagr's head down. The ref handled the situation really well. I feel bad for Jagr. In Ruutu's defence though Jagr put his head down at almost the last second, and that really isn't a good idea if you're playing with a 1970's helmet. But he shouldn't have checked him like that.

We'll see how mad the Canada got from their loss to the Swiss.. We have to start getting more goals from our 2-4 lines and stop solely depending on the first.. Though Sel?nne and Lehtinen have been great so far and Sel?nne said something like "I've had a good night sleep now, but I'm still waiting to my legs in the action.." Jokinen and Koivu have been good too. I'm hoping that the rest of the team will pick up their level a bit. And that Niittym?ki continues to play confident in goal. That way we'll have a chance tonight.

But: Curling!! Curling fucking rocks!! Uusipaavalniemi rules! We just won Italy, and are now in the semi's! Tonight we play GBR, but the outcome of that doesn't really matter all that much.

Alright, I usually don't have much to say on International hockey, especially the European teams, but being half-Finnish and kinda pulling for them from the beginning of this, I gotta be the first to chime in...

HOLY LIVING FUCK, FINLAND BEAT CANADA!!!!!!

And in regards to the hit on Jagr, that was a clean hit.  If you want to wear a cheap helmet, you get what you deserve.  At the same time, you should be allowed to wear a cheap helmet if you want.  But if you get hurt from it, don't cry about it.  We'll see if this causes anything in the NHL regular season.  Do the Rangers and Canucks play at all?

Title: Re: XX Olympic Winter Games 10-26 February 2006
Post by: Skeba on February 20, 2006, 02:34:46 PM
I don't think it'll cause anything over there. I heard Jagr had to sign an agreement that IIHF isn't responsible for his injuries caused by him wearing an old helmet.

We played well for the first perioid. The 2nd and 3rd were not as good, but Niitym?ki was there when we needed him.

I guess they have the women's hockey since they have men's hockey. Canada and the US have always dominated women's hockey but Sweden's victory over the US was huge for the sport.

As for men's hockey, I'm cheering for Finland all the way since I don't think the US will go far. I really want to see Niittymaki win the gold. It was a disgrace he wasn't selected originally.

Unfortunately, I don't think Finland will go that far. They always seem to have at least one really bad period in the tournaments.... That's usually enough.

Finland is the team to beat this year, and USA looks bad, so I don't think you have anything to worry about Jarmo : ok: (that game start in 3 minutes and I'm gonna be listening it'll be a good one  )

My Canadians have to play Russia :nervous: now that something to worry about.

Question: Is the winter olympics getting good ratings in your countries? I was just reading yesterday how its not doing very well here in the U.S. I dont think the 2002 olympics did too well either, and we hosted that one.

Nearly everyone I know is following them this year, even non-sports fans :-\ it's weird

But we did shit last time, and funding has gone way up for our Olympic Athletes in Canada. So it's more of a pride thing, I think, this time around.

Canada got a Gold medal this morning for cross-country skiiing - 1.1-kilometre sprint

2-1 Sweden over Swiss at 1st intermission, I cant get the Fin/USA game :'( and the Sweden/Swiis game is being broadcast in french so i can't understand barely anything :hihi: (Man, Canadians and their hockey, we're such a sad bunch)

I was biting my nails towards the end of the game. I really want Niittymaki to get a ?medal to help his case to be our #1 goalie for the playoffs. Finland just needs to knock out Russia or Canada and they are looking good for a medal. ?;D

I've lost a lot of respect for Sweden in this tournament. I also hate how they were on Peter Forsberg's back to play when he is injured. I want Peter to do well but I really don't want them to medal. ?:P

Canada was shutout in 3 of their last 4 games and 11 of their last 12 periods. losing is one thing but this was a disgrace.? I'll guess I'll cheer for Finland.

My bad for puting this in The Jungle. I knew it as soon as I hit save.

Hoho, what a great day for Sweden. 2 gold medals and one bronze! This is Swedens best winter-olympics ever. And we're ahead of both Norway and Finland in the medal-race. It's lovely ;)

AND, the ladies won their curling-semi and will be playing Switzerland in the final today.

And, of course, we won the hockey-game very easy, as expected. I'd really like to see us in the final against Finland. And we all know how that would end :D

(But, let's play the semi-final first...)

I'm dissapointed in the Canda Loss today :'( But Russia has a fantastic team, my hats of to them

And what up with Canada? All thse players and Shut out in 3 of 6 games!!!!?? WTF  We shoulda brought in some of the hot players from this year rather than guys who did well 3 years ago. Oh Well, Vancouver 2010 we'll getthe gold back ;D

I think the Finland/Russia game is going to be fantastic. The winner of that game will take the Gold IMO. but Sweden and Czechs are good teams too. and With the Jagr & Forsberg factors it hard to rule either one of those teams out too.

Will be a good final few games regardless. And I agree a Finland/Sweden final would be a treat, when the last time those two teams played each other for the gold? It has to be a while, if ever. I'm not positive but I imagine it is quite the rivalry. (It looks like Wernie wants to go toe to toe with Jarmo :D Get in the Ring!! :hihi: )

A Finland vs. Sweden final would set off a mini-war in my house (thank god I won't be here for it).  My girlfriend loves Sweden because of Peter Forsberg, while I'm pulling for the Finns because I'm half Finnish and they're the only European players who play with some guts (or Sisu, as the case may be).

Unfortunately, I'll be travelling to Texarkana with my local NAHL team to announce their game on the radio on Friday and Saturday night so I won't be at home to see the game.  Hopefully I can still watch it in the hotel (give me a listen, friday and saturday 8 pm eastern! www.wfwildcatshockey.com ).

Actually, all this talk about Sweden pushing Peter is just nonsense. As he said himself, noone has pushed him to come to the olympics. It's been his own decision from the start and he wouldn't have played if he didn't feel 100%.

It's gonna be a killer on sunday. Our biggest rivals in the final. It can't get much bigger :)

"North American't"

niittymaki is the man!! i love that guy, and he gets no respect. the flyers wouldn't name him their #1, and finland didn't even want him for the olympics.

but he just continues to prove everyone wrong. the flyers should name him their starter.

he'll be facing lundqvist on sunday, and maybe again on thursday (rangers @ flyers).

That's not true at all. Peter was not 100% to play when he went over to Italy. He was told by several doctors in the US that he was not healed and should not play. The whole Flyers organization did not want him to play. ? The Swedish doctor who examined him when he arrived in Italy pretty much agreed with the American doctors. It was looking very unlikely that he would play but then he magically heals overnight after Sweden gets a beating from Russia. ?

To be fair, it does seem like the treatment by he received over there was better than what he was getting from the Flyers staff. The Flyers staff is pretty awful and should be replaced.

It'll be interesting... Niittym?ki's been excellent. The whole team's been great. Tonight they really played as a team. Sunday will hopefully be a great hockeynight no matter what the outcome (except that we will win...)

Naah :) We'll let Finland get some easy goals in the first period...shall we say...like 5-1? Then we'll bounce back and win it with 6-5. Remember world championships 2003, anyone?  :hihi:

But as you said. No recent games matter now. This is a massive game. Just mention Finland and Sweden's motivation can't get any higher and vice versa. It'll be a great game with two excellent goalies and some great players. I can smell OT already...

1-1  :'(

2-2 now.. Great match. A fuckin' triller 8) Sel?nne, Hagman and Jokinen will score and Sundin leaves the arena after Ruutu's tackle. So it will be 5-2 after third period. Yay Finland!

EDIT.

Forget everything I just said. One thing I hate is losing.. and even more I hate losing to Swedes. And maybe the most I hate Swede's strategy every time they lead by one goal. They dont even want to play. At least we have Ruutu  : ok:

Finland just was simply the worse team.

Congratulations to Sweden.

They got the slower game they wanted and Finland played their worst game of the tournament.

Typical Finnish thing, to assume you can just take it easy to win. There was no speed and it seemed like occasionally the players thought they were at practise.

That's true. Second period was just awful.. but I dont like the strategy Swedes used in the third period. I still think that we need to take Summanen back.. He has the talent to keep the players awake in every game.

Yeah.. The Swedes were better today. Especially in the second. It was awful to watch... Well.. The Finns scored 3 goals with Berg finishing the first for the swedes.

And it's a pity that the 3rd period started the way it did. It really killed the game for us.

I dont think that IT killed the game for us.. But after that score, Swedes started to defend alot and they didnt want to take any risks so it was simply boring. We didnt have any luck today. Swedes had, like always  :-\ Just watch the last two minutes again and you'll see what I mean.

I know what you mean. That last save by Lundqvist was just phenomenal.

I missed the game. I ended up turning it on as Finland was being awarded silver medals.  :'( Niittymaki looked so sad but he was the MVP of this tournament so I'm proud of him! Calder Cup MVP and Olympics MVP all in one year!

Finland was great this tournament, especially considering they had so many players out.  Finland has a bright future!

We might see a Niittymaki/Lunqvist rematch on Thursday.

Congrats to Peter Forsberg!

Yeeeeeeeeees! Yeeeeeeeeeees! :D :D :D ? ?

Wonderful to finally see Sundin, Lidstr?m, Forsberg and Alfie winning a gold medal together. We've had so much failure these last years.

Although, it was tough to see Sel?nne and Koivu after the game. True gentlemans to the sport and they kind of deserved a gold medal aswell. They can be proud of what they achieved this tourney though, even if it feels awful right now.

7 gold medals for Sweden. Fantastic! :D

Finland lost one game in the tournament, and that was enough for second place :( Luckily I was watching the game in a bar, so it was somehow easier to digest the loss with other disappointed people around :hihi:

Poor Teppo Numminen, he almost broke down crying when he was being interviewed after the game. I really feel sorry for the guys...

twas a good hockey game. That third goal by Lidstrom was an amazing shot though.

Zetterberg got a goal and an assist too? : ok: Nice to see my wings pull it out :hihi:

I though Finland was gonna get a goal at the end there but a flailing Ludquist managed to knock it out with his stick.

Selanne played amazing for the Finn's too.As well as Niitimaki (sorry if i spelt it wrong). Ah well can't be disappointed with a tourney like they played if you are from Finland. One loss :o Amazing, 4 SO's :o Amazing!

Also I find it very rare when at least one goal in a game is not a fluke, every goal today was virtually impossible to stop.

Again good game to both, well worth getting up early for : ok:
