I believe the album is certified platinum with 500,000 copies.  Because it's a double album, it only needs to have a 1/2 million in sales.

No, how many discs is irrelevant.  I mean, if it were three discs, four discs, or five discs, how would you figure that?

If you check the gold and platinum database at www.riaa.com, you'll see that Live Era is certified Gold at 500,000 copies sold.

Actually, how many discs IS relevant.

The new Outkast album is certified 8 times platinum for 4,000,000 units shipped (You can research that if you want).  Since it is a double album, each unit sold counts as two.

Finally I can punk Dizzy.  I'm so happy.

Anyways, with regards to Live Era, I would assume that it's sold 250,000 copies to receive it's Gold certification.  : ok:

So, the Smashing Pumpkins "melloncholie and the infinite sadness" only sold 4.5 million cd's.

That is weird, wild, stuff.

I don't think I agree with that method. Double, triple, quintuple- it's still one album to me.

Not really. That 500,000 units number is only for the U.S and that statistic is 4 years old (2000). So it sold 500,000 copies in 1 year in the U.S. That's all that number means. Also when geffen made the GH press release they said that Live Era was a multi million selling success so it must be around the early millions right now. My predicttion using those 1 year US figures to help me is that Live Era has sold about 1-5 million copies worldwide.
