Pretty good dude: ok:
I'd lose the keyboard though, and have a guitar playing the same thing instead or something, because, to me, it sounded kinda crappy (no offense of course ;)).

I like it anyway, very evil.

exacly what I was thinking : ok:

I would do the whole thing a little faster, and sing louder/harder, lose the keyboard/synth thing, add more guitar and bass(I have crappy computer-speakers here so it might just be that I don't hear the bass properly!)

but the changes I would make would probably change the shape of the song so much it might be completely different to what you wanna do. it's got potential, and it's cool that you play everything yourself.
Im gonna do the same thing as soon as I get a hold of enough equipment!

cheers mate

thanks guys for listening and the opinions

that is a very rough demo of that song

i havent mixed and mastered it properly yet, that was also a first take vocal, so im gonna dive in and pump the guitars up a little louder, drop the synth effect lower in them mix pump the bass up a tad

that was just to show an idea of what some of my stuff sounds like

i hope u guys liked it, i have lots of songs still to be put up

kiedis when u get something down let me hear it

i enjoy hearing people's music

once again thanks for the suggestions and the feedback!

D, I think they're both very impressive.  Very nice work, I really like "One Foot in the Grave" the most.  Your voice is unique (in a good way) as well.

Really?  That surprises me ... you sound like an accomplished musician - definitely keep at it man, I can't wait to hear more of your songs.

One day I will... I've got a bunch of songs recorded, and lyrics for them, but I can't sing at all, so there's no vocals.  I'm either going to force myself to learn to sing or get one of my buddies to sing them for me.

Yeah, I discovered conny's music a few months ago, it's really good.  He also has a cool One in a Million cover for those who haven't checked it out yet.

Rock on!  :)

man learn to sing
hell who knows u may be able to sing now

voices are weird, u know some think certain people can sing, some might think they suck,

i have old songs i recorded 5 years ago and i couldnt carry a tune in a bucket

but i kept singing along with my favorite artists and practicing and im ok at itnow

yeah ive been playin guitar for 8 years, and ive been writing songs for bout 7 years, its hit and miss, im still recording

those 2 songs online are my filler shit to be honest

i have 3 songs i consider to be my *to stillf rom axl* "big guns"
ill have those up in a couple months im still working on them

thanks again loretian for listening and get to work singing or finding a vocalist
i wanna hear!

by request ill type the lyrics

Welcome to Reality

sit in my room
nothin for me to do
writin down whats on my mind
i just feel so behind

down an alley behind the store
rats are crawlin on the floor
checkered pavement blue and green
fill the spaces in between

welcome to reality, reality made me welcome to reality reality just made me

guitar solo

purple sun and yellow sky
the world just flashed b4 my eyes
children drown in green koolaide
black velvet soaked in lemonade
freezie pops go down the drain
they crash and burn like aeroplanes
the sun dont shine, the stars dont beam
is this real or is it just a dream?

welcome to reality, reality made me welcome to reality reality just made me

guitar solo

One Foot In the grave

when people ask me about it i lie
even to myself i always deny
cause i dont wanna face the fact that u dont love me

im just so lonely tonight
i wish that i could hold u tight
so i can feel u breathe

i try to hold on, i try to go on but i know that youre not comin back

chorus

and i know that ive made mistakes
and i know that im to blame
know that my life will never be the same
nowhere to run or to escape cause our love's to gone to save and without u babe, i got one foot in the grave

when a car like yours drives by
my heart falls to my knees everytime
and i wonder if yours ever does the same

thats when the tears come to my eyes
and i begin to realize that ill never be ok

i swear that id rather cry over you
then to find somebody knew
cause your in my dreams everything i do

repeat chorus

im just so lonely tonight
i wish that i could hold u tight
so i.................. can feel u breathe......

guys thank all of u for listening axlluvr2 thanks for the happy birthday!!!!!!!!!!! sweet cake!

guys i hope to have my cd finished in  a few months *soon is not the word* lol!

do any of u guys think i could get 5 bucks a piece for a cd?

i promise i have songs better then these that are online

a wise man named Conny told me to "make them expect less and then give them more

just like axl is doing in my opinion

most people will think that those two are my best so when they do hear my best they will be even more impressed where as if i hit u with the best off the bat the rest of the songs will slope down and i want people to hear them and think damn!!!!!!

im hard at work as we speak, just took a little break

Loretian thanks again for listening and the kind words

im startin to get a little freaked out, no one has bashed me or told me i suck yet, thats sorta what i was expecting

but hey u guys are givin me confidence and makin me believe!

anyway my scsi cable that connects my cd burner to my tascam 8 track digital studio is fucked up and until i get another i cannot burn any more songs onto disc and upload on the computer

but everyone thats listened please answer my question, based on what u have heard and my promise that i have 3 or 4 songs better and 3 or 4 as good does it sound like something u would buy for 5 dollars?

thanks again guys!

u all have gave me the best birthday present ever!

I'd definitely pay $5 for a CD.  I think you could probably even charge more than $5 - I don't think $10 is unreasonable, but hey, $5 is OK too.   : ok:

D, I think what's notably about your music is that it's solid all the way through - the songs are well structured, all the instruments are well played and sound good, the lyrics are pretty good.   I'm not saying that One Foot in the Grave is Sweet Child O' Mine or anything, but I think if it was mixed a little bit better, it could easily be a song you'd hear on the radio.  The fact that this isn't your best is also very exciting.   :)

Edit:  Just to clarify, in case there was some confusion, I meant that last sentence in a good way.   : ok:

loretian i took that complimentary!

i feel like i have some really solid good songs but sweet child o mine, thats a timeless classic that will be listened to 100 years from now
plus gnr are the greatest band ever!

shit i have no songs that compare to that but i dont feel bad cause over the last 15 years there have been maybe 5 songs on that level

thanks captain!  im gonna lower the keyboards in the mix, im just happy u like one foot in the grave at least

more to come guys im recording my ass off as we speak

so just stay tuned!

Title: Re:D

Awesome, D, I can't wait!

I worked on recording one of my own songs last night, and I even tried singing over it.  It didn't work...  the music was alright (imo, I made it because I liked it), but my singing was just a disaster.  The only worthwhile thing was that occasionally I would slip into this Tom Petty type of sleazy sounding singing, and for those few brief moments, it sounded alright.  I'm gonna keep working on it.

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on January 07, 2004, 03:22:53 PM
just keep working and working with patience

fuck ive got old tapes i recorded and up until bout 2 years ago i couldnt sing for shit but constantly singin along to axl,jon bon jovi, prince other r and b artist really tuned my vocals up

sing along with music

not necessarily metal guys, sing different styles even if u dont like the music, shit id sing everything from axl to dwight yoakam to brian mcknight to d'angelo

it really works your voice out

turn down the stereo when u sing

along time ago i thought i sung note for note with axl
that was only cause the stereo was loud, when turning down stereo i sounded like a howling dog so i worked and worked, axl is a hard fucker to sing with, shit!!!!!

my style is something i think really doesnt sound like anything out, i feel im original, i write what i know what i feel what ive lived etc

all my songs are from my heart and with all my pain and guts, im not a poser or anything, if ive wrote it ive lived it

i dont follow trends, i dont care bout being on mtv, if i have to be like todays bands on mtv id rather not be on there

im goin more for the cult indy type following, a close knit group of people who like my stuff and relate to it, im not that interested in being a huge deal or what have u

keep at it loretian, it took me 2 and a half years to finally write one song that was ok that i could listen to

i see now why people do this though

its sorta unbelievable when u write something and people like it, its a great feeling indeed!

Title: Re:D

loretian: D's right... just keep on singing! you'll get there... also, i HATE my voice.. i think i got the  most horrible voice on this planet... but people always said im a good singer... i know i can sing in tune... its just my vioce... i dont wanna sound like that!  :peace:

Well, im not going to bash you or anything, I just personally dont dig the music. Your voice doesn't appeal to me very much. I didn't find anything very catchy, maybe your big guns will appeal to me. I'll still give them a listen when you let us hear them. But as of now, its just not my cup of tea. But good job on putting the tracks together and stuff, anyway. I know that its not as easy as it seems. :peace:

Thanks for the words of encouragement and advice guys, I really do appreciate it.

D, I am definitely going to take your words of advice on singing along to the music.  I can't get my voice anywhere near as high as Axl, so I think I'm going to try with some Wildflowers or Bob Dylan.

thanks for the honest opinion

wow my first bad review :nervous:

im takin it pretty well but i like your whole "its not my cup of tea" thing

thanks for that, honestly

alot of times people go "that fuckin sucks" when in reality its not your cup of tea

for instance ive met people who hate prince, to me this seems not possible

but thanks for listening and the honesty!

loretian im gonna listen to your track a little later when i get some time

find your niche! thats the deal

u know i love prince, i love bon jovi i love gnr but i cant write like those bands i love which was a bummer at first but i just had to develop myown style

id love to write an estranged or a coma but i just aint capable

just sing from your guts and heart, write authentic lyrics and u will find someone to like it

remember *imtrying to comfort myself after axl'spiano not liking my stuff*

billions of people in the world more are gonna not like u  than like u

fuck thats depressing!

I really enjoyed listening to these two songs.  Welcome to Reality has a cool hook and the guitar parts in One Foot in the Grave are amazing.  D has an awesome voice too.
If anyone hasn't heard these songs yet, they should definitely listen to them, because they're very cool.

damn, Im not having any luck downloading your second song, guess I'll have to try it when I get home tomorrow.
but keep up the good work D and everybody else!
from what Ive heard, singing can be a bitch, luckily Ive never been bothered with it since it's in my blood (mom's an amazing singer), and i can sing just about anything I wanna sing, my only problem have been to find my own true voice, and Im pretty sure Ive found it now. I play drums in the band Im in right now, but both the guitarplayers want me to be the singer, but I just don't have the guts to stand in front of a crowd and sing.....guess Im a chicken shit...
maybe I'll get there in time (Ive been there before though), we'll see guys : ok:

I'll tell ya what I think about your second song once Ive heard it D : ok: :peace:

Edited: D, singing along with Axl and Bon Jovi is good practise, but try to sing along with Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction), now there's a real challenge, and if you succeed, Im pretty sure you will have a much bigger range in your voice when you're done! :peace:

Title: Re:D

"Welcome To Reality".......pretty cool....musically solid....and I think I heard some people shit on the keyboards.....well I think they add a nice texture/feeling to the tune..... : ok:

P.S.

I expected your voice to be deeper........steroids?..lol

EDIT: Nice melody......"One Foot In The Grave".....

Little advice though Kentucky........your voice has potential (IMO)......but you hold back too much..........let it out......I mean you can hold a note.......that's not the problem......it's just that it could be much better.....at least I think so anyway...........

Good luck with it all man.......

Cool dude.  Hurry up and post some more stuff!

With regards to an album title, i'd make a suggestion, but I've only heard 2 of the songs so I couldn't really give you something that would reflect on the feeling of the album, which I think it should.  It should capture the whole vibe of the record and the songs.

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on April 08, 2004, 11:56:55 PM
ive now i think decided to do a 2cd set as my debut cd

i cant think of anyone who has ever done it so im gonna be the first

i have 32 songs that im so close to emotionally and its like i need to release all of them

in order to evolve as a musican and a human being i need to clean these songs out and put them out there, so ive decided to have a double cd with 16 songs on each i figure whynot, its a cd if someone doesnt like a song they can easily skip it

my scsi cable should be here may 1st and ill be able to post more stuff

also does anyone think tracklisting is important in the order?

here is the tracklisting for both cds, im typin it here in case i lose or the original i have it wrote down on gets thrown away

cd 1

1.welcome to reality     big gun
2.if you were a tear    big gun
3.i wish you knew      big gun
4.love is war          big gun
5.Sarah
6.life's too short
7.losin u is killin me
8.despair
9.walkin dead     big gun
10.driftaway
11.love is misery
12.betrayed
13.i miss you
14.forever damned
15.cyrstin and destiny
16. scarlett    big gun

cd 2

1.death of me     big gun
2.one foot in the grave
3.altaration      big gun
4.someday     big gun
5. you mean the world to me  big gun
6. we are make believe
7.valentine
8.please dont go  first song ever wrote
9. you and me
10. prettier than heaven
11. if i was a fighter
12. lifetime of misery  big gun
13. end of you
14. unforgivable
15. U R              big gun
16. death parade

tracklist are subject to change i may not put big guns in a row, i may put a big gun then 2 non big guns etc to balance out the cd, how does everyone think uj should go about doing a tracklisting?

Title: Re:D

I think it would be better to release one album with the big guns, then try to release a whole bunch of stuff at one time.

Well Donnie you have some good songwritting there but I'll be frank with you because I think that's what you deserve (out of respect).

Find some musicians who you trust to do this with you. I don't really know how your voice has changed since you recorded this, but from what I heard you struggle almost every bar with pitch and in the slightly higher range your voice strains A LOT and you lose any sort of tone that you once had. I'd recommend experimenting with really opening up your chest and maybe add a touch of vibrato.

The guitar tone is not my favourite, although the lead line is alright. The keyboard has to go for sure... if you want an extra chordal backbone I'd do it with a piano and possibly a string arrangement.

I could definately do something with these songs, I would approach them differently. You just need help with your execution... good song writting alone will not really get you a deal.

Post more because I'm interested in your music, and I wish I didnt live as far as I did from you because as a musician myself I think there could be a big impact made on the sound of your music and my understanding of songwriting.  Like I said... just get with some musicians that you admire and trust so that they can help you out. I think you're trying to do too much yourself and the music is suffering.

those are demos and yes my voice is way better than all the demos

guitar tone im takin care of i ordered some better equipment

the rest boils down to personal taste i suppose

for every one person who doesnt like the keyboard for instance i have 5 that love it

for every one person that doesnt like my voice i have 5 that do

for every one that thinks i do to much myself i have 5 that think im a genius

so i totally respect your critique but quite frankly if i tried to make an album using everyones critiques it would be a cluster fuck of an album

i dont personally make songs for commercial appeal or to be accepted by the masses, i make songs cause they help me battle the demons and if other people dig them i am grateful if they dont it doesnt bother me at all

its impossible to create a piece of work that everyone digs
i found out a long time ago to please yourself and not everyone else cause i got to thinking, there are people who think prince suck, there are people who dont like guns n roses

what if axl listened to people that told to cut november rain down to 5 minutes instead of 8? u know

so thanks for listening and the honesty, but i only know how to do stuff the way i hear it in my head and if people like it great, if they dont thats their opinion

Title: Re:D
Post by: Pviljoen on May 13, 2004, 07:31:27 PM
I wasn't proposing that you try and make your shit more commercially appealing... hell my primary background in music is classical, so commercial appeal means little to me.

What I mean is, if you got with some musicians they might help you say what you want to say in a way you might find more pleasing. I'm positive that in 5 minutes a good musician could take what you've done and with a stupidly simple change could make it sound a lot better.

I'm just saying this because you previously communicated that you are relatively isolationist about your approach. That's just why I recommended that you seek some help... everyone gets help... all the greats. It's almost impossible to create a masterpiece on your own.. or even at the very least, to have your work reach its full potential.

Axl needed the other members of GNR to make songs like November Rain and Estranged memorable... just like any prolific songwriter. Bono needs Edge, and vise versa.

Death of Me lyrics

i sing it kind of crazy so they are somewhat hard to understand

use to be so happy, use to be so feeled with life
but since u went away, i just sit around waiting to die

u were my every single dream, u fulfilled all of my needs
a reality that was more like a fantasy, till i thru it all away with my jealousy

chorus

they say what dont kill u, only makes u stronger but i dont know if i can go on any longer
cause u are gone, and the pain keeps lingering on, and i just cant get u off my mind
dont know what im gonna do, to forget about this love i feel for u, but the more time passes the more i see
that you're gonna be the death of me

think of u while im awake
dream of u while im asleep
thinkin of how i lost your love as i console my guitar while it softly weeps

for now my world is cold and gray
but i know the sun will shine someday
maybe your feelings will change but if not spit on my grave

repeat chorus

if i feel the same way tomorrow that i feel today
then ill take my shovel, dig my own grave

repeat chorus

u promised me life thats what u took
now u walk around in your world like u dont give a fuck
u left me hear just waiting to die
i curse every mornin i wake up and im still aliveeeeeeeeee

journey said it sounded like electronica/punk so i dont know, its a schizophrenic love song where i go the fuck off on vocals

u could always pm me a mailing address and ill send u a cd of it and a couple of other songs im currently working on

i dont care a bit to do that

just let me know!

also that is free of charge by the way in case u were wondering

or add me to msn or yahoo, u may have dialup but it would only take probably 30 minutes, i have cable and im on all the time, so it would be no problem at all

Ok. You wanted feedback.

I listened to the 4 songs that I've seen around, and I have to say I didn't like them. Just like Pviljon said, your voice needs to get a lot better. And I don't mean the way it sounds, I mean so you can keep in tone. I also can't really make anything out of the guitar, it was just a wall of distortion. I don't know if it was meant that way. The drums seem to lack something. They sound like they were made with a computer (which can be done well also).

But these are only my views. I've read here that some people enjoy your work, so you'll still have some people listening to your stuff, but from what I've seen so far, I'm not convinced.

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 23, 2004, 05:11:01 PM
thanks for your time skeba and the honesty

those vocals on the songs u heard were more or less one take place holder type of vocals, they are extremely better when finished than on the versions here

i posted versions for people to kind of get a feel of how my stuff sounds

just like in any music, some like it, some dont, thats why i appreciate the honesty, if its not your thing there is nothing wrong with it, doesnt mean i suck or anything

i mean if i took a poll on this board to see how many people liked Prince, im sure it would come back overwhelmingly NO and i think he is the greatest artist to ever live on this planet, just like their are people who dont like VR or even GNR

but i still want to thank u for taking the time and giving it a listen, sorry u didnt like it

To tell you the truth .. I can't get a good grip on the songs. They're just not catchy ... sometimes not even listenable.

Although, it would be unfair of me to say they don't have their appealing parts. For eg, that opening bit in unforgivable, before the electric guitar bit kicks in.

Let's start with your drum bits. Welcome to Reality and Death of Me have the same loops. That gives them a very similar feel, especially when coupled with the keyboard chords, which also sound very similar.

I think the keyboard and that particular distortion you've chosen sounds cheesy ... although if other people like it fair enough.

Now you've admitted the vocals are way better on the finished thing .. so I'm asking for a fair chance to review that.

If you could put up one song .. or just a bit of a song that's a finished product.

Lastly, do you really want to make it big as an artist? Or do you have some other job in mind, and this is just a side thing?

I'm asking because you don't seem like you would be very affected by the outcome. I mean, if it is your only job, then you SHOULD be affected by what people say, and you should be constantly working to better any thing, take all the help you can get.

However, if it's not your DAY job, and it's just some way to express your feelings through art, then by all means, take it down the path YOU wanna go, and walk the way YOU wanna walk.

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 24, 2004, 12:08:04 PM
some things to keep in my mind when listening

1.the songs i have posted such as death of me,unforgivable are album filler i guess u would call tracks and are the weakest songs ive got, i post them cause if people like those, then the best songs they will love even more

2.i do care very much what people say however like i stated previously no artist no matter how great will ever be liked by everyone, its simply impossible to create a song that  every single entire human loves

3.i dont want to be big as in an mtv, platinum selling, on magazines etc etc, my intent is expressing feelings being an eccentric, diverse indy type artist that is left of right in most cases and attract a cult type audience, i love every song im recording or i wouldnt record them, if others can relate to what ive done and it touches them that is outstanding but u are right i dont really care if people dont like them, because if u were bothered by every person that didnt like them u would be constantly in a bad way

4.lets say u dont like the keyboard but such and such over here loves it, do i do 2 versions one with keyboard one without? see what im sayin? it would great to be able to do 50 different versions of a song so everyone would like it but thats impossible

5.im poor!!!!! i have a very limited amount of money and equipment to work with, i dont have live drums, i have to use drum machines so in using a "some drums are better than no drums" approach, i just have to make due with what i have

if i had a professional studio and a drum set of course it would take my stuff up another notch, but this is the true DIY (do it yourself) method at work, im actually happy everytime someone doesnt exactly get what im doing, cause songs like death of me,welcome to reality and unforgivable are the only songs that sound like they sound, the rest of the album is basically heartbreaking love songs which is what i do best

so u guys have to judge the sound etc on a different level than say a cd u buy because i just dont have the means to have a huge pro quality sound, guitar tone etc i mean u work with what u got, if i could buy some marshall stacks and a big guitar rigg id do it in a second but i have a 200 dollar pedal board i just bought and a 700 dollar studio thing

once i get into the love depressing normal more commercial stuff, u all will understand what im talkin about but those are still in the recording stages and im not putting up one take demos anymore cause first impressions are alot and i have made some bad first impressions putting up filler songs and one take demos but i still have way more positive than negative and this is my day job, this is my destiny and no one is gonna change my mind

my goals when i started writing songs when i was 12 was basically to write one song that I loved and that I could listen to, ive now done that bout 40 times over so to me im already successful and everything im doing now is basically extra

Title: Re:D
Post by: WagMyDog on May 24, 2004, 03:24:53 PM
Okay. Fair enough.

I'd really love to hear the finished product. Take your time. And if your stuff is heartbreaking stuff, I'll assume you have more stuff like the picked guitar on Unforgivable .. which sounded pretty damn good.

BTW, might I mention, sometimes you can get a pretty good recording from a simple Marshall 15DFX .. and a good electric guitar, plugged into your comp.

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 24, 2004, 10:22:38 PM
hey thanks wag

im not tryin to sound like i dont care or i disreguard peoples negative critiques, cause trust me the negatives effect me way more than the positives

i probably did a bad job in the order i posted songs

but i promise if u love sad, acoustic type heartbreak songs i will have several u will like

death of me and some of those were more experimental type stuff, thats why none of those are really an indicator of how i do sound cause i am actually more of an acoustic type artist

but dude i still thank u for taking your time and listening, but im workin hard on finishing up some of the acoustic type slower songs and ill post them as soon as i do

just please dont think much of the drums cause i know they are sorta shit, but like i said right now its the best i can do

im hoping for more of a developmental deal, take what i got in a real studio with a producer and do what would turn out to be the in store version

Title: Re:D
Post by: AdZ on May 25, 2004, 12:24:22 PM
D, I listened to 'welcome to reality' and 'death of me' and for me, the songs sounded too durge like, too much like a funeral march. and I really didn't like the distortion on death of me, your vocals kinda blurred into it too much.

It would appeal more to me also if you didn't slur some of you words.
This is just my opinion don't take it as an insult or anything. :)

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 25, 2004, 04:18:44 PM
those songs are suppose to be kind of gloomy

death of me is one frigged up song, the distortion is just there, i was using a cheap zoom pedal board on that song and it was  a song where i was really feeling one step away from jumpin off a bridge when i recorded it so i just wanted to make it as ugly as possible   i look at death of me as sort of a song where u have to be in one screwed up mood to like, if u were really depressed or down it would be more appealing

on "unforgivable" im gonna delete the electric part and leave it a simple acoustic song, i like the guitar picking and im gonna leave it like it was written with acoustic guitar and bass

guys just give me some more chances when i post the more melodic love type songs, i dont know if that is your cup of tea, but i promise if u like love song type deals u will find a few at least that u like somewhat!

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 29, 2004, 07:11:30 AM
that song is more of what the rest of my style on the cd is

sometimes i overdo things but thats just experimenting etc trying different stuff

once again i would love to buy a drum kit and do live drums etc

but i cant afford one, plus i have nowhere to put one, the drum machine is basically to have something, i know it isnt the greatest, trust me i know but ive tried it without drums and to me its better havin some drums than none at all

i just want everyone to keep in mind that this is a low budget type project im doing, just try to see past some of the tones, drums etc cause alot of it is just shit equipment, i mean u can only make a 400 dollar guitar with factory everything sound so good, same with the drum machine etc

lookin past some of the production type issues though does "i wish you knew" sound like a pretty solid song?

conny:

the lyrics i wrote when i was 18 its one of those songs i wrote in high school when i was just learnin the craft so the lyrics are not the greatest in spots

im a work in progress, im improving and learning everyday, so hopefully ill finish some more and hopefully u all will start liking some stuff!

thanks for listening everyone, i really appreciate it!

Some things I think you should consider...

1. Sometimes good guitars w/o drums, really work great. However, just on some songs. I'll say your 'drumming' is better here. While it is a bit laid back, that is the song style so it works ... (for a low-key production thing ... I'm sure if and hopefully when you do get a record deal, they'll get it to sound better).

2. Your singing. It is a bit off, though keep working on it, and listen to your vocals, you must see where you're going off. I'm sure you can refine it and make it better.

3. What kind of song are you aiming this to be? If it's a patience kinda number then you don't need background vocals (I know they have it on Patience, but it sounds just as good w/o the BG vocals). If it's a bigger production and you're just doing a low-key job of it, then work on the vocals. Your BG vocals go off key a lot of times, plus in a couple of places you seem to fuck em up, not knowing when to stop.

4. If you could work up a great intro for the song, do it, even if it's just slow strumming w/o the drums. Or you could try some picked bit like what you did on Unforgiveable.

Here's the deal. Your voice is the thing you have to work on the most. Your guitaring seems great for a singer, no one expects you to be Yngwie Malmsteen. You've gotta practice a lot, just keep singing, experiment with your vocal range and stick within it. Leave the out-of-range stuff for when you're performing live, and that way you can blame it on the booze.

Oh, and the song is pretty good. If you work on that voice, perfect it for your style ... and believe me you sound like you could get there sooner than later ...  you could be the next big GWAG*.

In anticipation of your becoming a big star, and flying me in to watch one of your shows,

WMD.

*Guy With A Guitar ... eg: John Mayer.

PS: On a similar note ... what kind of singer do you see yourself as? Whose style would you say is most like yours?

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 29, 2004, 05:16:28 PM
im a mutt of styles, thats alot of my problems, b4 i sung that song i drank a bacardi raz and my shit was dry!!!!!!!! : ok:

i guess my vocal style is a little jon bon jovi with garth brooks with a tad of axl and kurt cobain slopped in

i wasnt born with even a good voice, its something ive worked on and worked on and its never gonna be beautiful like a chris cornell or brian mcknight or what have u

i have early tapes and trust me its came a long way

TO THE SONG

the background vocals were originally wrote for my friends Girflfriend who could sing and it kicked ass with a female doin those parts, but i dont know any females that can sing so i took a stab at em and im just goin to do it with the vocals, maybe double em up or something

i do have bunches of songs better than this and thats a fact, this isnt what i consider a "big gun" *i hate that phrase*  but it really isnt

i need singing tips, like what to drink, eat, how to warm up properly etc

the thing is i sing so much better when im just doin a live type of deal, if its me fuckin around singing for people or to myself i sing 10 times better than what i put down
but as soon as i hit record its like i get nervous or hold back

any tips?

thanks once again everyone, and if i ever got signed which im starting to doubt if i am that good, but if it ever happened all of u all can have a job as whatver u want!

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 29, 2004, 10:47:59 PM
actually on unforgivable thats a guitar using the slash "estranged" technique with delay on distortion
im gonna axe that part maybe, or do a solo, im still playin around with that one

death of me, i got an awesome digitech 300a effects board that just fuckin rocks, the guitar tone from this pedal board is amazing, so im gonna do the guitar part with the distortion from it and make the guitar stand out more

ok conny  level with me

death of me i had tons of emotion on because i was really feeling that song when i sung it that day, ilet go didnt worry bout stayin on key as much and just let it rip from deep down

is this what u and everyone else is recommending on the other songs?

just letting go and goin off with it?

thanks alot conny, inspiring words from a great musician like u mean alot

everyone please listen to conny's stuff, he has a unique style that is very soothing to the ears, great guitar great voice, everything

more songs will be up shortly!

Ok, I've listened to them all except Unforgivable so far.  (dialups take time to download stuff...)

I think the songs themselves are good.  You've certainly got a talent for writing.  and the guitars are pretty good too.  I personally don't like the keyboards at all, but like you said...some people will and some people won't...and ultimatly it's your choice.  The lyrics on I Wish You Knew are a bit cliche...but since you were only 18 i'll let you off... ;)

But I have to say, you're singing is off man.  I mean, don't get me wrong, it's about 3 hundred times better than I could do, but it still sounds strained...there doesn't seem to be any power there...

In my honest opinion, I think you should find a singer, a natural born singer, and get a drummer and a bassist or whatever and get a proper band together.  I think Pviljoen was saying something similar earlier.  Seriously, brilliant musicians have a natural affinity for thier craft.  Sure they still put a lot of work into it, but if you haven't got the gift in the first place, then it'll never be there.  You can get good...but you can never become excellent.  It's like some people can play sports, some people can't.  It's something you're born with.

I could have singing lessons everyday for five hours a day for the rest of my life, and still i'd never be able to be a singer...it just wouldn't happen.

I don't want to be overly harsh, but that's my honest opinion.

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 31, 2004, 01:08:55 AM
im not understanding the word strained?

i mean what is that?

its not the greatest but i certainly believe its above average, i could name tons of singers with a voice u wouldnt call "excellent"
i saw someone in a thread that said prince's voice was weak or thin

i couldnt tell u how many people think axl is the worst singer on the planet

criticism is fine but some is a tad harsh,

people listening need to realize their opinion isnt the only opinion

if u dont like it, thats great, thats your right, i respect your opinion
but when u start sayin how i should not sing, and how ill never be able to etc thats a bit over the line cause opinions are just that, opinions

you think im shit, but there are lots of people who share very different views than u do, so just cause u or pvil or whoever says so i should do it is ridiculous

a huge thing to remember

most artists have vocal processors, computers all sorts of shit that very much enhance their voice

it is very rare u will find a singer that sounds as good in concert as they do on cd

anthony kiedis is an example great singer on cd but live his voice is no better than mine

axl rose has he ever sounded all that good in concert compared to the cd? very rarely

the list goes on and on

so listen to the songs people but dont try to change who or what i am

im playing the instruments, im singing'

there is no compromise

so either u like it or u dont but lay off the bashing some, if it aint your thing thats fine but dont tell me to stop or what have u

sorry if i seemed a bit agitated

i apologize to everyone

the thing is i know that i can fucking sing, if u could hear me live or over the net u would be like WOW wheres that on the recorded version

for some reason though when i hit record i hold back, and im pissed off at myself cause i just cant let it out for some reason

i dont know if i worry about sounding stupid so i sing it safe, or if i just freeze up afraid to fuck up

i dont know but anyone who has heard me live and hears my songs tell me that and im aggravated not so much at negative stuff, but im aggravated cause i know im capable of singing so much better cause i do it everyday

im just not getting it down when i record and im so frustrated with myself

but im gonna light some candles read some old notes or something, try to put myself in a place where i can just throw down

i promise everyone of u that im the best available singer to do this, if i can get it down u will see

when the red light comes on i feel myself tense up, and fuck maybe i need to get drunk or something and sing it, i dont know or try to have fun with it

any techniques im willing to try anything, anyone have any suggestions to help me trick myself into just letting go?

the thing is i know that i can fucking sing, if u could hear me live or over the net u would be like WOW wheres that on the recorded version

for some reason though when i hit record i hold back, and im pissed off at myself cause i just cant let it out for some reason

i dont know but anyone who has heard me live and hears my songs tell me that and im aggravated not so much at negative stuff, but im aggravated cause i know im capable of singing so much better cause i do it everyday

Okay... first of all, I can understand if you feel uncomfortable when receiving negative remarks ... when someone criticises something you've put quite a bit of work into. I hate it too when people criticise my poems and articles, but I guess it's part of the parcel. I mean you're putting your stuff out there, and everyone will not like it. And you're entitled to just take it in one ear and out the other ...

HOWEVER, since this IS your day job, and you ARE looking to make the best album you can, you'll have to give heed to what people say, and if it's useful ... consider it an option (you still don't have to use it) ... if it's not useful, say thank you but fuck no. (You'd better not reply with THAT to this post ... )

Anyhoo ... I'm getting the idea you don't wanna let anyone else work on the stuff on this album. You wanna do most of the work, if not all of it. And that's fair enough. But you still have to improve in certain areas, that's a FACT no denying it. (But you're not alone, every artist regardless of their possessing a record deal or not, have to keep improving their act, you're no exception)

Now, about getting some of that good singing on record.

You said you sing best live ... would you say you like singing TO people, and that's why you give more live?

Then how about this ... get someone in that recording room. Anyone you know will give you an honest opinion ... better yet, get TWO people in there ... one who'll give you a positive review and one who'll give you a negative review. Hopefully, what'll happen is that the +ve person will let you know what parts you've got down good, and the -ve person will let you know what you haven't got down good.

Plus, you'll have the benefit of playing to an audience when you're recording your singing parts.

And like I said to Conny ...

Having laid down my critique, I'd just like to say I'm not really all that good at anything myself, and at best my critique stems from comparisons to the greatly produced songs that are doled out by the music industry worldwide, at worst my critique stems from the pleasantness of the songs to my ears.

But still ... you ARE asking for a critique on a Message Board, so what else can you expect?

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on May 31, 2004, 05:48:29 PM
ive discovered alot of what im doing wrong

u know how like if u get a shitty bootleg of a song u dont really like it, but the studio version is pretty awesome

most artists like the pro stuff u are use to hearing, those guys sing line by line, they do maybe sometimes up to 20 tracks of vocals and it blends together and sounds so strong, plus they got those computers so if they are a  tad flat or sharp they can click the mouse and fix the note

with me i sing one track of vocals and i do one take vocals, i sing the song all the way thru on one take and thats the song

so my stuff has basically been like a live recording

so what im gonna do is sing verse by verse

im gonna sing a verse, get it down

stop the machine, take some breaths, drink some water, clear my head, and sing another verse,

then im gonna get it all down, and copy and paste that on a couple of tracks and double or triple my vocal and it will make it that much fuller and more strong

plus yeah like on i wish u knew everyone was in bed and i sorta sung it like that,so i need to wait till im home alone and can really belt it out

on a side note i really dont wanna sound like any band thats on mtv or vh1, im goin for more of a unique different kind of sound

i see myself as more of a kurt cobain singer than an Usher, my style is kind of raw and gutty, im not goin for the beautiful vibrato smooth vocal sound anyway

but hey i respect and appreciate all comments

negative stuff does hurt your pride some, cause your songs are like your babies and im very protective over them

and music is all im good at, and i feel there is an audience for my stuff

at least i hope so!

dude scarlett is by far the greatest song i've heard from you, it has a lot of potential.

i love it. to all the people that say d's vocals aren't up to scratch i disagree. I can hear them they're fine, but i think they will benefit if the vocals were recorded professionally or multitracked etc because right now they're too thin in the mix imo. Verse vocals are perfect, just chorus ones seem to lose quality or something, which imo isn't at the fault of d. just better recording will make it really really good.

d i would love to one day hear these songs recorded professionally in a massive multimillion dollar recording studio. i'm assuming these are demos. im really sorry if they aren't demos and i've offended you.

i'm not even a real big fan of the genre of music you play but i know talent when i hear it. keep it up  : ok:

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on June 25, 2004, 01:52:28 PM
yeah u were dead on oddy

i have a 700 digistudio,a 400 dollar guitar, a  200 pedal board a 70 dollar mic and a drum machine, so all things considered

plus with vocals, those are one take vocals, i go back and correct some mistakes here and there but i dont have any vocal processors or i have no way like they do in multimillion dollar studios to smooth the vocal out or click the mouse and correct slight imperfections

thats a rough mix, i need to turn the vocal up more, turn the guitar in the chorus down a tad but the time the actual cd comes out, all of that should be on point

thanks for listening oddy! i appreciate it!

Just downloaded a song of yours dude for the first time.  Scarlett and i have to say i was quite impressed obviously if you had a top studio provided by a top recorded company and session people it would be better but i was impressed with what you worked with and see lots of potential, vocals sometimes muffled but id blame that more on the mixing than your vocals cos at the end of the song they were clear and sounded damn good.  Had a kinda eary feel to the song kinda like a song i could slit my wrists to :hihi: that's not a bad thing by the way since i put Estranged in that same category

Title: Re:D
Post by: Hammy on July 03, 2004, 09:25:14 AM
Seems the Big Guns are focused on the start of the album and there is like one in the last 6 tracks people may feel they are getting suffocated if you know what i mean then may get bored late on e.g. if WWE had the World Title, Intercontintal matches early in a show then finished with lesser matches interest would wane.  Also would n't you be better spreading the trilogy out throughout the album.  Once again dude just suggestions of mine : ok:

Title: Re:D
Post by: D on July 03, 2004, 02:04:02 PM
the tracklisting has changed about 50 times :hihi:

i just want to make sure i have some of my best right off the bat in case some sort of record type person were to give it a shot, i want to hit them with the top shit back to back to back cause if i got some big shit at the end they may not listen to the song that could make me or break me

for instance i consider altaration to be my best song, if i had it 13th an A&R or important person that could make me or break me may not get that far into the cd and i want to make sure they hear the big shit

the level between big gun and non big gun isnt huge, i honestly dont think i have any filler at all on this cd, this cd has been 6 years in the making

from 2 years ago only i think 7 or 8 songs remain
if i had finished this cd two years ago the songs that are on their now u would still have are

reality,if you were a tear, i wish you knew,one foot in the grave,death of me,despair,love is war,world 2 me,unforgivable and someday

so over the last couple years ive replaced 7 songs with much better songs so really that eliminates any type of filler

all the songs are the cd are listenable, just depends on what u like

im also when i finish the cd im goin to send copies to people on the board and let u guys help me figure out what the first single what i try to get played on radio will be

i also need some help guys, i appreciate all everyone can do, lets bring a contract home to htgth if we all pitch in i believe it can happen!

i appreciate all the support and im sure the final tracklisting i have for listeners will be different, but trust me there isnt a bad song on the cd! in my opinion of course, the couple people who have heard every song like em all

so im gonna hurry and finish by the end of the year im hopin then im sending it to discmakers to get post production and mastering, they do cover art, booklet etc make it very professional they put a bar code and everything, its gonna cost me around 2,000 dollars for 1,000 copies, but im gonna save the cash and do it!

thanks again everyone!

d are there any all out rockers along the way?

i know its not really in your style i was just curious. if you have a rocker and it doesnt fit with the cd i'd understand if you don't put one in or something.

i've only heard your ballads/slower tempo songs, and no offence because your ballads are great, but a whole cd of even the best ballads would seem......i dunno.......needs a contrast with a fast song or something.

ok i'll shutup now, god i know how i hate people telling me what i should do with my songs.

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on August 30, 2004, 03:13:39 AM
u are dead on oddy!!!!!! yeah thats whats takin so long now. 16 love songs would be boring i admit myself.

so im puttin some stuff on hold and im gonna tap into my heavier/faster side. i have some really cool riffs im workin on lyrics and leads etc etc. i got an awesome drummer for the fast stuff, so it will delay my cd some, but it will be worth it. im hopin for at least 5 or 6 faster songs

ballads are my specialty but im gonna throw enough variety in to hopefully please people who dig the faster style.

But I think your trying to pull an Axl on us here.

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on August 30, 2004, 01:29:52 PM
my first single "altaration" which ive only let a few people hear, starts out slow and acoustic for the first two verses, then it switches to a faster different riff for a bridge, then it goes to the chorus which is fast and a different riff.? after the chorus it remains fast and yet goes to an even different riff and goes back to the bridge before a chorus, a long guitar solo and then only goes back to the slow part for the outro

ill post it one of these days but thats my bread and butter song, so if people like the rest of my stuff this one should really blow em away.

If i had done the entire slow cd it probably wouldve been ready by jan/feb, but now where im goin back and doin some faster stuff, probably by next summer.

im not rushing it, im taking john lennon's "u have your whole life to make your first record" comment to heart. its not when i release it but what i release.

so id rather release something that taps into all my musical abilities than give u 16 love songs.

also if i did that, next cd when i do tap into more of my heavier style, it will look like im selling out going from balladeer to heavy dude. so a little variety opens the door for me to do whatever styles i want.

be patient, im so thrilled people are still interested. It will be worth the wait, i promise, u will get a professional, high quality almost entirely filler free cd.

i think its filler free but im biased i guess where its my work.

im workin on a heavy deep dark introspective song, i wrote these lyrics today, i gotta finish em but this is gonna be dark and heavy, i may change or edit here and there but heres what i got so far:

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?"Fragile"

physically im strong one of the baddest fuckers around
but emotionally im crippled cant get off the ground
i need help from you will you lend me a hand
are u strong enough to love me and to understand

that all my life ive been done so wrong
abused and abandoned left on my own
happiness scares me its a foreign nation
will this be permanent? or a short vacation

paranoia and jealousy keep fueling my mind
fillin my head full of doubts and destroyin my life
i wish i were strong and could be more secure
so i wouldnt disappoint or hurt you anymore

im fragile so easily damaged so hard to repair
haunted by? the burdens of all my despair
my demons crash our party and make my happiness subside
they feel me with so much terror and bury me alive
im fragile not secure not sure not a man not unbreakable just fragile and emotionally damned

im workin on the music and i got to finish the lyric but thats not made up shit everything i write i live so there ya go! one of many faster heavier songs to come!

                                                RELEASE DATE

i will be releasing my debut cd *hopefully on some kind of label*  late November or early December 2005, yes it will be another year but this is definitely gonna happen.

instead of releasing bullshit demo sounding cds im gonna send my masters to "DiscMakers" which is a professional cd making plant, they clean up your masters, remaster them to make them sound great and radio ready and create your booklet and mass produce it, they give u a barcode so u can sell it retail, they get one song reviewed in an A&R magazine plus they sell it on an online store "cdbaby" for u and give u the money earned for the sells.      1000 copies is what i will be getting, its gonna cost me 1800 bucks, so im starting to save and ill have that much money come Nov.

i hope by then people will still be interested, im gonna send a few hundred to record labels and also sell them, im thinkin right now of sellin them for 5 bucks a piece if that seems reasonable to everyone.

im really puttin all my life into this project, this isnt some candy ass fake bullshit, the songs are real and are all a piece of me, so hopefully i can round a bunch of my fellow boardmembers up when i get ready and maybe u all can help me fulfill my dreams, that would be the greatest.

anyhow thought id give a little heads up info.

Cdbaby is a good store : ok: I've used it a couple of times.

so its pretty popular u think? so if i let them sell some of my cds u think enough people browse that i may attract some fans that dont know me?

plus i figure if people online want a copy it would be easier for them to go there and order it, i got my fingers crossed, i wont forget the people who help me out if i make it, so we will see what happens!

does that site have its own list of like the top 10 albums being sold or the top 10 best voted song or anything like that?

cuz then with the help of us we could buy your album and vote for songs and stuff which will help other people will see "d" on the main page in the lists and you album would get noticed better.

theres an australian site set up for independant artists, and it has lists like this in all sorts of categories that make it way easier for the artist to get noticed.

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on November 19, 2004, 07:01:24 PM
dude that would be awesome!!!

i havent checked that site out yet but i will and if my HTGTH friends could help me out and push me over the top and help me achieve my lifelong dream id never forget it and id always appreciate it and reward everyone that helped.

ill check it out and see whats goin on.

when i finish im gonna ask for peoples input on opinions on how to get heard and how to get out there and hopefully we can make this happen, cause this board is like a big family and is very close knit and i feel could generate some buzz.

Title: Re: D

D, I hope this works out....  I was listening again to your songs, and I like them all.  Like Don't Try Me, and like I've told you before, I definitely think One Foot in the Grave is the best one.

thanks bro!

and let me hear the stuff u guys are workin on!

that last song u sent me was great and i want to hear more!

im writing my faster tracks now, for some reason i sound like grunge when i play fast so go figure.  i still havent unleashed what i consider the "big guns" yet, so the fact u guys like One Foot in the Grave is very encouraging

im trying hard but u guys know how it is, somedays it feels hopeless like i have no chance of makin it anywhere but im never gonna stop trying and i dont expect any of u to ever stop tryin ether.

all it takes is for one of us to make it and then whoever does can help the others hopefully. i know i would.

Loretian im glad u didnt give up and u are one of the reasons i didnt give up, so u all keep workin, im gonna keep workin and let me hear some more stuff when u complete it!

Cool, man.? I'm excited to hear your faster stuff!? I like grunge a lot too, so that's not a bad thing!? It's always somebody, you or Axl, holding out on the big guns.? ?:)

When you're trying to create your own, unique, non-stereotypical vision of music, it can be really hard.? A lot of people don't get it.? And then, a lot of time you don't do it either.? ?: ok:? So, it's hard to know when to fight and push an idea you have, and when to try something else.? Personally, I don't know if the music I am creating has the potential to reach a big audience, but I'm going to get it out there, and give it that chance.

The last song I sent you, My Favorite Fantasy, wasn't finished then, and still isn't finished.? It was just a "rough draft" of sorts.? As soon as I have more rough drafts for you to listen to, I'll send them your way.? Once the whole SP is finished, which shouldn't be too much longer, you'll be the first to hear it, and it'll be available to download for free on the Internet soon after that, as well as actual CDs I'm going to manufacture, though those will mainly be for local radio stations and venues.

ive learned through trial and error the best thing to do is what u are.

Just stay true to what u hear inside your head and just your style, dont do something u arent.

like me for instance, i really cant do metal, it just isnt my personality u know, Some people dont like the keyboard synth effects i have in my songs but thats my style.

i could change it but u will never please everyone.

what bums me out is that i really really love my songs and have such deep emotional attachment to them and its weird when someone doesnt like them but if someone likes 2 or 3 of your songs i guess thats doin pretty good.

i only worry about my vocals, i know i can write a song, i know i can put them together and fill them with hooks but i worry bout my vocals because i just dont know if they will ever be good enough.

when u send your stuff places let me know how u go about it etc. myproblem with finishing my cd is not really knowing what to do with it once im finished.

your style and my style are very different than anything ive heard and to me thats a great thing not a bad thing.

i dont want to fit in to music today, i want to do something totally different and be totally left of right and not fit in with today's trends/look etc etc

i want to change shit!

when i sing on the final mixes im gonna really throw in the emotion, my only regret is not posting finished products cause people judge u on the rough demos and if they dont dig the rough demos they may not give your final product a chance

so in retrospect i wish i had spent more time gettin the vocals better before posting them online but its all worked out ok so far.

anyhow keep me updated! i still love stars, shadows in the night and my fav fantasy, so keep em comin and keep me updated!!!

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? what i will become will be because of you
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? lyrics and music D

ive been down for so long
destroyed since the day it all went wrong
hit rock bottom fell through the ground
you're kickin dirt on me but i wont stay down

chorus
it may take me a a little time
but one day i will remember how to smile
ill dust myself off and ill be alright
instead of runnin away ill stand and fight
everyone always tries to hold me down
no matter what they do ive never stood my ground
but ill die before i ever let that happen again its true
and what i will become will be because of you

haters try to tell u that u are no good
its only cause they cant and they wish they could
here's a middle finger to the negative kind
cause you dont like your life dont hate on mine

repeat chorus

bridge
close minded people who were scared and weak
that didnt have the guts to try and chase their dreams
they never wanna see anybody else succeed
but im gonna prove em wrong just wait and see

guitar solo

outro chorus

im never gonna be what u want me to be
im never gonna give up and sell out my dreams
this is my life and i choose to live it this way
hate all you want im never gonna change
its never gonna be too late to work nine to five
but im tired of sittin here? just waitin to die
so back the fuck off of me thats what you need to do
cause what i will become will be because of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm, I'm really bad in theory so I can't help ya there. The difficult thing with this question is the flow of the song as well. I have no clue what vibe it's got other then I know it's a fast rocker.

When I start trying to lay down/ or create a solo I just go with the flow. Sometimes it takes me quite some time to figure out what the song needs and what sounds good. And some other times it works out pretty fast.

Just try and go with the feel of the song and you should be able to get pretty far. Take your time with it!  :)

Title: Re: D

super crazy fast lead multi-combo boxes.

need i say more.

hell if its in the key of a just use the a minor pentatonic its been used for centuries. also use a dorian(G major i think). also you could use A major. tonnes of sounds can be created from that.

look at your favourite fast rocker solos. they all have certain segments. the fast run up to begin the solo or just long notes, a slow different sounding(switch of keys is good here, you could go from a minor pentatonic or a major to g major(a dorian or something) middle and a rapid fire burst of notes up the neck for the end or back down either way.

but like dont try me said theres no set way, it all depends on the vibe of the song

what chords are you soloing over?

awesome guys!

yeah i just gotta take my time and keep workin and workin until i hit that lightning bolt that u just go "fuck yeah thats it"

its A then D then B then E then D

Title: Re: D
Post by: Oddy on December 06, 2004, 07:58:30 PM
look i'll give an example of some ideas to use.

            A                                                             D

e--------9p5--------7p5-------9p5-------7p5-------------10p7---------9p7---------10p7---------9p7---------------------------------
B--------------7p5--------7p5-------7p5-------7p5--------------10p7--------10p7---------10p7-------10p7--------------------------
G------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

         B                                                                                             E                                                                           D

e----14p10----------12p10----------14p10----------12p10------------------17p12-----16p12-----14p12------17p12----------19b^(22)
B-------------12p10----------12p10----------12p10----------12p10------------------12----------12----------12---------12----------------
G------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

those are just some patterns of the top of my head. these are all in A major. you could use G major(A dorian) or A minor pentatonic so the ideas you can make is basically unlimited.

depending on how fast you move through the chords, something similar to those patterns could be played over each chord. OR, since all the chords are in A major and all those patterns are an A major scale, you could play something like the 1st pattern for the first progression, then next time through the next one then next time through the next one. This is particularly good if the progression is quick and the change of chords is quick.

those are just some ideas, good luck : ok:

edit: the tab sorta screwed up so that last d should be at the end for the bend.

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on December 07, 2004, 03:03:40 PM
thats awesome oddy, ill try that and see if it works

i was thinkin about gettin some new pickups for my guitar, some seymour duncans or something like that

before i go and spend the money, will new pickups improve my sound and tone enough to bother with it?

i have a 450.00 dollar guitar and the factory pickups suck.  so what do u think? is it worth it? i hate my tone!!!!!!!!!!!!

Title: Re: D
Post by: Oddy on December 07, 2004, 10:25:02 PM
yep you can make those patterns fit over a minor chord by dropping the 3rd a step in the pattern. cuz that'll probably be the sound your after. they were just ideas that i posted without a guitar with me so i have no idea how they sound all i know is that they're in key to the chords and to the major scale.

hmmmmmmm about the pickups thats a tough one. you see you could get your seymour duncans but that might not be the problem. no matter how good your pickups are if your amp isn't some monster tube halfstack you won't be getting that awesome tone.

you can get close with a solid state or a modeler(like a podxt) but it wouldn't be the same.

on the other hand, the tone in your songs does sound el cheapo (no offence). save up for some new pickups and i suggest getting a pod xt. i don't own one, but i've heard recordings from other people that were recorded with the pod xt that were fucking awesome and they fooled everyone that it was a marshall halfstack. good luck : ok:

Title: Re: D

yeah i know dude, but u can only work with what u got, i wish i had top of the line equipment and i would like to hope people can take certain things into account when they hear my songs, but im gonna go with the pickups and then go from there. my friend bought some seymour duncan fender stratocaster pickups and he said its made all the difference in the world in his guitar, so before i go and spend a bunch of money im gonna buy the pickups and see if it improves it.

i mean if nothin else it sure cant hurt.

thanks! ill try that when i get home tomorrow!

Title: Re: D
Post by: Oddy on December 08, 2004, 05:34:09 AM
oh no doubt they will make a massive difference.

one guitar i have is a stock epiphone les paul classic plus.

the other i have is a heavily modified les paul bolt on replica (i dont care what people say about bolt ons, if its done well there is NO difference with a set neck) from the 70's.

when i play the epiphone i mean its decent, but when i go to my fav les paul it sounds better in every way i can hear quite a massive difference.

i have a di marzzio PAF classic in the neck and a Gibson P94T in the bridge but yeah the seymour duncans alnico 2's (the slash ones) would be perfect for what you play.

D, i like ur songs they sound different to what i was expecting.  The songs that stood out for me were 'welcome to reality' and 'one foot in the grave' although the keyboard sound didnt suit 'welcome to reality'.

i think with better equipment and more experience the songs will keep improving.

i'm looking forward to hearing these 'big guns' u keep mentioning!

good luck to ya!

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on February 10, 2005, 08:12:47 PM
thanks alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im working on the equipment issue and the final mix of welcome to reality, the keyboards are gonna be lower in the mix and not so in your face

im still learning how to mix and hopefully the time i finish ill be able to balance everything properly, if not ill get someone where i live that knows what they are doing to mix it for me : ok:

i appreciate u taking the time to listen

once i get my podxt line 6.0 i will post some of the big guns

some of those are heavier and i cant get a proper distortion sound to record em properly right now. everytime i record em the sound is way too deep, no matter what i adjust or try it never sounds the way i want it too.

so when i get the better equipment in a month or so, im gonna finish all the loose ends up and get back to putting some newer stuff up!!

2 have become 1 , is a very emotional and pretty song ,You can really fell your emotion on it and it just adds that much more to the song.

Altaration., is fucking killer .the song reminds me of something I would find on a Bon Jovi album .And with you saying it?s not 100 percent finished  yet make wonder how much killer is going to be?

2 Have Become 1 rocks!  The lyrics are incredibly emotional, and the whole song has a very passionate feel to it.  You gotta release this song soon...

What I've heard of Alteration is great too, but I'd rather wait until it's done before I say too much....  I am very excited though..

Wrap up the album soon.. man... lots of us are waiting!

why wasn't i informed?

where do i get 2 become 1 and alteration?

Title: Re: D
Post by: conny on June 06, 2005, 05:23:02 AM
"Alteration" - well, it sounds like you're on the run, hurrying through the song. Have you thought about slowing it down a bit? I love how it builds and builds, some very cool ideas there, very good. But I think it would be even stronger and more intense if you'd slow it down. This could easily be an 8-minute song, the composition is great.

I understand it's a demo, but the distorted guitar sound in the middle doesn't do much for me. It gets the dynamic point of the song across (the idea with break is great - I was like "what the fuck is that??"), but the distored sound itself is terrible, way too cold and sterile, it lacks "life" and depth. Other than that - much better singing than ever and very good arrangement, even in that stage of production. I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics yet, I was focus on the guitar. I'd like to hear the distorted part in better quality, sounds like there's some very intresting guitaring buried underneath it.

"2 Have Become 1" - still doesn't work. I got the file, but it still just doesn't work. Guess I have a little troll living in my computer who doesn't like your music. But nevermind - I do! I'll try and figure how to open the other song. All I get at the moment is a text (!!!) file?? Well fuck me. At least "Alteration" worked.

Thanks for sending over the new stuff. And while you're at it - GIVE US MORE!!! IT ROCKS!!!? : ok: : ok: : ok:

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on June 06, 2005, 06:44:52 PM
Ill send 2 have become 1 again, i fucked up and sent a text file somehow lol!

Altaration is one guitar part, I still have to add another rhythm part, and my solo's plus I gotta mix it better

that is a very very rough mix of that song but I wanted u all to hear it. It will be much better quality and mixed very very well on the finished product.

Conny your advice reallyhelped my vocals, By doing all u have told me i have been able to open up and let the vocals shine without hiding behind effects. so that has worked great.

thanks for all the critques everyone!

So check your email and ill try sending 2 have become 1 again

Oddy send me your email addy and Ill let u hear these!

that part in the middle u are talkin about Conny is where the guitar solo will be, so when I do the solo and add the other rhythm guitar part, it will sound much nicer.

Title: Re: D
Post by: Oddy on June 07, 2005, 01:00:15 AM
i just listened to alteration, man thats a kickass song right there! : ok: although it isn't finished i can tell its got some serious damn potential. man i love the faster vocal style it suites u really well. its a really catchy chorus there too. i just went to go grab my guitar then and i was humming the chorus. fuck i love it im soloing along to this. its been on loop for like 4 rotations now. ok i gotta stop. your vocals have improved too. i'd really like to hear a polished version of this song. that transition to the distorted guitars will be so good.

i just listened to 2 become 1. awesome singing, but sometimes when your holding a pitch for too long it begins to go flat especially the low notes. however on the contrary, ur middle to higher register sounds awesome and is always in tune.

its a simple song with a simple beautiful melody, because of this the one suggestion i have is to scrap the drums, or have no drums for the first half of the song i dunno to me they just make it sound synthetic, could be cuz its a drum machine though lol. an accoustic live version of the song would be cool.

thats the suggestions i've got for now. had to listen to them real quick cuz im a bit busy atm.  so those are my initial opinions. man u've destracted me i can't get the guitar away from me im rippin it up slash style playing along to ur songs i have uni work to do!. alteration is certainly my favourite of the two. keep it up man.

Before I do the final mix for the album I can guarantee all the vocals will be 100 percent top notch.

Yeah my computer crashed and I lost the Web Templates which made updating my site very easy.

Im gonna re download webpage maker and go back through my emails where Conny explained how to do it and update it etc.

if u want I can email u the two newer songs *arent really new, Altaration was wrote in 2003 and 2 have become 1 was wrote around oct 2004 but Ill send em to your email and u can listen and post if you want too.

I think Altaration is way better than Welcome To Reality but thats only my opinion.

Title: Re: D
Post by: *Izzy* on June 07, 2005, 05:10:00 AM
Yeah Altaration would definetly be great as a single when you get a guitar solo in it. If I could give you one piece of advice for the song it would be to hold the note you're singing at around 4:10 and have the next part of the vocals start on another track, so that they're overlaping in a kind of layered way, and keep doing that for the rest of the verses
Sorry if I didn't really make myself clear there but I've never done any studio recording so I don't no all the techincal stuff? :hihi:
It's a kick ass track and I love the lyrics too, great job

I think 2 Have Become 1 should have a very emotional Patience style acoustic solo in the middle of it but it's defineltley a very good song without that anyway

 :smoking: Izzy? :smoking:

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on June 07, 2005, 05:12:35 AM
thanks dude!!!!!!!!

Ill take that into consideration, U know during that break where im humming "whoa whoa oh"

that is a harmony for the chorus and Ill go back and see what u are talkin about at 4:10

I still have the solo's,rhythm, bass and those backup vocal harmony things, so ill see how it fits.

Its still not too late for me to throw a nice solo into 2 have become 1, ill see what i can come up with and see if i can fit it in somewhere. how about after that bridge where it ends with "I never knew what beauty was till i looked at u and its all i ever wanna do" how bout after that if i do a nice short melodic solo and have it lead into the big finale chorus that I sing?

would that be cool?

once again I appreciate it!

Title: Re: D
Post by: *Izzy* on June 07, 2005, 05:28:51 AM
Yeah that would be a great place for a solo.
I think you should do a short solo or intelude or chord proggresion at 1:27 after "We're in Love, 2 have become 1" and then a slightly longer solo at the place you mentioned

 :smoking: Izzy? :smoking:

Title: Re: D

From what I heard so far WELCOME TO REALITY should definetely be the first track on the demo. But I don't know what else you got in store, so...

For "Alteration" you need to listen to appreciate it - so it's not working to get people's "at first sight" attention. Killer album track, maybe opening the second half of the album with its more upbeat and positive theme compared to the darker material that should kick off the album.

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on June 07, 2005, 06:06:48 PM
I plan on Seven Days to be the first song to kick off the album and Welcome to Reality following it.

Seven Days is a darker edged type song like Reality but faster and then it drop into the mid tempo stylings of WTR.

Album tracking is gonna be tough cause I have half the album that is lighter and more love and upbeat, but the other half is kinda dark and dreary.

I thought about instead of side A and Side B having a light side, and dark side, all the dark songs on one side, the light songs on the second side.

I also have a trilogy of songs (Someday,Lifetime of Misery, and Scarlett) that Id like to put back to back to back cause they are about the same subject and relate to one another.

A couple posters on my Dean Koontz forum listened to welcome to reality and told me it sounded like a big hit. so Im gonna finish the CD, send u all a copy and if u all will, Ill let u all vote on what u think would be the best song to do first for the first single etc.

Did u ever get 2 Have Become 1 to work yet Conny?

If anyone else is interesting in hearing "Altaration" and "2 have become 1" PM your email addy and Ill send them to u.

Yeah, finally "2 Have Become 1" worked. I like the lyrics and the drumming, but the rest doesn't do much for me yet, I think it needs some more time and work. Is that a "fresh" song? It sounds as if you just wrote it a few days ago.

Can't wait to hear another recording of "Alteration", this song really grows on me. I burned myself a CD with some of your stuff, but it's not the real thing. I want these songs the way YOU want them, so keep it going man. You get better and better!  : ok:

Title: Re: D

I've listened to Alataration 3 times now. 4 times when I'm done writing this.

The part I like most definately, is the introguitar. I also like the brigde and the way it goes into the first chorus and I like the chorus as well. The synth sound fits the song well too.

The distorted guitar is pretty much a wall of noise, which could be from the recording equipment. It does bring a bit of an indeustrial feel to the song, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for... The drums are a bit dull, as they are from a machine. Meaning there's no fills, and the beat is the same through out the song. I think you also need to work on the vocals, and maybe add a bit of reverb to it. Just so that it would sound more natural.

This is your best song yet, but there is a lot you need to work on. There are some issues with playing in time with the distorted guitar, and in the beginning when the drums kick in. But you are improving. I hope to hear the finished product some day.

Post by: D on June 09, 2005, 04:15:28 AM
thanks Skeba!

I wish I could get a hold of a set of drums.

I have learned how to do my own drumbeats using the machine, so I will update the drum beat and add some fills manually.

the guitar will sound better once I mix it better and add the other guitar part and the solo's.

Vocals Im gonna nail perfectly for the finished product.

thanks for listening!

I've been listening to Altaration for a while now, it's really growing on me? : ok: Yeah the intro is definetley one of the best bits of the song, reminds me of Calafornication or Under the Bridge

I've listened to altaration and I really like it.

The lyrics are great, I like the intro guitar.
Some drum solos would've been great, but the drum-machine beats does itheir work.
Distortion guitars were as Skeba said a bit like wall of noise, but I got the idea. Some heavy guitar will be great, since this really isn't a song about "all the pretty flowers"

Good work!

thanks dude! im gonna go back and add some drum fills manually! they should move the song up another notch!

the distorted soundwill also be heavier and crunchier and overall better sounding!

thanks again!

I used to be huge into to Pink Floyd (I still am, but it's hard to stay interested in a band that doesn't release new material forever), and I definitely think there's a Pink Floyd side to your music.  It's not real strong, but it's there.  Your music is unique enough that there are no easy labels.

For me, it's pure D!

i liked welcome to reality, but a little more guitar in place of the keyboard. but they way the keyboard and guitar clashed at the end was good.
One foot in the grave is very good but you need to sound like you want 2 sing it, now as though you're being made 2 sing at gun point. Don't take that comment ta heart that bad. It was good, needs a force tho.
Scarlett is good but instead of Keyboards, i think you need 2 put in a few, may be 2 or 3 chords, preferably power chords, once every bar.
I wish I knew You is a very relaxing, very good song. There's not much I can say for that.

Sorry if i sound too critical. Generally, I think your music is cool enough 2 be recommended. just a few minor things and it'll be one up the bum, no harm done  cool  : ok:

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on November 10, 2005, 01:48:40 AM
U know the Scarlett thing u are talkin about is a good idea.

But Id probably do distorted power chords on the chorus only, cause I want the verses to be delicate and vulnerable and then the chorus to sort of be rage like longing.

So, adding Distorted chords during the chorus is a great idea.

thanks for listening by the way.

Unfortunately Im not sure "I Wish You Knew" is gonna make the CD but if anyone wants it, Ill do a finished version and slap it on a couple Cds as a bonus song or something.

Great stuff happening tonight.

Ive been jamming and writing with my partner for about 6 hours tonight and we have the makings of an unbelievable song.

I was workin on a riff for a while and played it for him and just like magic he comes up with some killer fuckin riffs to go with it.

this song has the ability *If I dont fuck up the lyrics* to be better than Altaration.

Its fast, its heavy and its different.

We are gonna work and record till Thursday.

We are workin on about 3 or 4 other new songs and comin up with new shit daily.

So hopefully Ill have something for u all to hear by this time next week.

I have my fingers crossed cause this song we are workin on is sooooooooo fuckin hard and we are rackin our brains tryin to tie it all in.

So its exciting and Ill keep u all updated.

Up at 10 am to continue.

We got a great fuckin intro, a great lead riff, great verse music, great chorus music.

Now we are tryin to tie them all in, I have to come up with the lyrics and then we gotta start tryin to record this fuckin beast of a song which isnt gonna be easy cause it has so much different shit goin on.

I kickin around song ideas, not exactly sure what Im gonna sing about, I know it aint gonna be a sappy love song, its gonna be loud and aggressive whatever it is.

Death,Suicide, something...

If I had to compare it something, It would probably be early Metallicaish mixed with Chili Peppers mixed with GNR, I dont know its totally original though.

stay tuned.

People use to my tearjerkin love songs are gonna be in for a surprise.

Lyrics are gonna be interesting.

I have to figure out someway to make it heavy without makin it satanic.

ITs gonna be one hell of a challenge.

I figured out how to put kick ass distortion on my drum beats to give them an industrial feel, I was gonna do it on Altaration but It just didnt work out, but Altaration has improved dramatically.
We gave it a whole facelift.

We added another guitar which really beefs it all up and gives the sound a much fuller quality.

I added drum fills and changed the drum beat when the distortion kicks in to keep it fresher.

We are addin bass, Im doin my solo's, and I am not gonna post this fuckin thing until I sing it properly.

So Im hopin Im not buildin this up and I hope u all can tell the improvements in it.

I will post it as soon as its finished.

give me another day or so.

Click here to download the newest song from me.

Its an acoustic song called "Half Page"

The song is a very simple recording its only 1 guitar and 1 vocal, very simple no frills music.

Hope u like it, Let me know what u think.

Turn it up kind of loud, i still gotta mess around with the mixing some.

Ive been wrestling with that song for awhile, I dont know if I should leave it like it is or try to add some other stuff to it....

I probably need to turn the guitar up a little louder but I kinda like it just stripped down, no effects, no drums or anything.

I think my vocals have improved tremendously since some of the earlier songs I posted.

Thanks for listening dude!!! I will hopefully have a few more up pretty soon including the complete "Altaration" : ok:

D, Half Page sounds great!  The lyrics are *extremely* well written - and it's cool to hear you tone things down for a more simple, heartfelt song even though we've all heard how much more you can do, if you want to.  Can't wait to hear the new Alteration!

Thanks dude that means so much to me.

Personally I hate my vocals on it.

Im gonna make the guitar louder and resing a few parts here and there.

I sang that at like 7am in the morning and my voice sounds "Tired" in places.

So Im gonna turn the guitar up some, sing a couple of the parts over and then I should be satisfied with it.

Im thrilled u like it and hopefully the new Altaration will be finished in a couple weeks.

Im goin home Jan 6th and Im gonna work on it hard for about 4 days and Hopefully by mid january it will be done.

new tracks will come soon, I didnt want to compete with the Chinese Democracy leaks...

its called good timing my friend.. :hihi:

who the fuck would wanna hear my stuff with the CD leaks out u know?? : ok:

Ive been banging my head against a wall coming up with a proper solo for "Altaration" Im close but Im a perfectionist somewhat and its gotta be just right. once i get that solo, the song is done. Actually it wont be cause Im sending it to Loretian and he is gonna put some big time flavor on it with his pro tools and awesome production skill.

Im also in songwriting mode with a lot heavier stuff.

That one song I was talkin about earlier is like metallica meets GNR meets RHCP's so hopefully I dont fuck the lyrics up and it comes out like I want it to.

Half Page is also gonna be re-recorded to sound better.

Next song Ill probably have up is called "Lifetime of Misery"  I dont know yet, I am workin here and there though, I need a good kick in the ass cause Ive been slacking off. *hides from Loretian* :hihi:

Its gonna be worth the wait I hope.

just stay patient, soon is not the word...... :hihi:

Title: Re: D
Post by: Oddy on March 17, 2006, 05:26:55 AM
thanks for the update man.

i know you're taking your time with things to get things perfect but keep in mind that you're getting better and better both song wise and production wise.

a thing i think you're gonna have to consider is the song production quality between your earlier songs and the songs you have now. for the album to flow well the songs are gonna need to have the same style production on them so some don't stick out too much.

i don't think i'm making sense. maybe loretian knows what im going on about since he's the production guru.

Title: Re: D
Post by: D on March 17, 2006, 03:13:06 PM
The songs u guys heard earlier were Demos of a rougher quality.

Some of the very very early songs may not even end up on the CD.

The only songs u guys have heard that are 100 percent on the CD are:

Welcome To Reality,Half Page,Altaration,Scarlett and maybe One Foot In the Grave and I Wish U Knew is a very very big If right now.

So hopefully I can have all my songs hooked up by the great Loretian and they will all sound amazing like his stuff sounds.

Right now, Im workin strictly on uptempo, heavy type stuff to balance out the softer love stuff.

another thing to keep in mind is, some of the very first songs u heard were done years and years ago, Ive improved about 1000 percent vocally with great coaching from people like Conny and my Girlfriend who have made me realize how important emotion is over being techincally correct.

Ive improved just with overall songwriting, guitar playing, just putting together a song.

So Im hoping to impress u all and Im hoping this CD is great compared to CDs from the early 90's and I dont want it to be great just for a guy on a message board u know.. Does that make sense?

Time will tell I guess but im really gonna start working very hard to have something done.

Drama as soon as I finish it, u will be the first to receive it!

I am very very close to finishing it, actually it is finished in my head, I just gotta take a day to hook up all the equipment and record.

It will be worth the wait.

Ive made some minor Altarations to it.......... :hihi: so its a little different.

Melodies are the same etc but I just hope no one was fascinated with the synth cause that part of the song is severely changed.

Its still there, but I redid it and its more texture and less prominent in the mix.

however Bass, guitar fills take its place.

Also a shit load of new guitar harmonics have been added to the intro. so its cool

i changed the drumbeat around.

The drums are the same as the old up until the distortion kicks in and then it changes to more of a double bass rockin thing.

stay tuned.......... : ok:

Someday If I ever get an Indy deal and Have to go in a big time studio though, Ill have real drums, great instruments everything.

I have to get a new guitar and some better equipment, I absolutely hate my guitar tone but seeing as I am extremely poor, I cant really do anything about it.

New Instrumental Improv Riff and multiple solos.

I recorded the guitar parts with Pro Tools and I think the tone sounds 100 times better than how it use to.

This is called "Concrete"

I just plugged in and the riff just came out and then the solos are total improv with no corrections.

Im working on crafting this into a proper song.

Check it out at:

then let me know what u think. : ok:

 Thanks guys

Axlfreek, that One Foot In the Grave song was a long long time ago. Now that I am learning Pro Tools *big thanks to Loretian for all the tutoring* Im gonna put a new spin on those songs and I am hitting a creative peak and have been writing faster heavier harder hitting songs.

Thanks again for listening Guys! : ok:
