Some Kinda Magic

« on: February 17, 2008, 09:35:45 PM »

Here's an interesting point of history to discuss.

Hop in the time machine and space jump to Tudor times.

Arranged marriages between royal courts were the thing to do. Princesses as young as 8 were often bethrothed to older kings from distant shores.

Perfectly acceptable in society then. Why not now?

Or, does this practice still go on in some parts of the world?

Do you really need us to explain to you why it's completely inappropriate???  There's this concept called "consenting adults" that has been catching on.   Wink

The common practice of the day was for the king/prince to meet his betrothed when she was young.

Sex between the two would not occur until the princess was of age.

very weird stuff.  we're supposed to come up with why that doesn't still happen?  i like to think women are more empowered and able to control their own lives in today's world.

Funny that.

Arranged marriages between royal houses were specifically designed to empower both 'houses'.  Grin

My understanding is that there are still arranged marriages in places like India.  In fact, I read a story recently about an Indian couple who came to America who were in an arranged marriage.  She disappeared and the police thought her husband had killed her or that she had had an accident.  Turns out she just left him and left with a male friend.  I don't remember the details, but I think that's the basics.

I was kind of surprised that these kinds of arrangements are still made.  It wasn't royalty, but just between 2 families, which I believe happened in Tudor times and during other time periods as well.  Probably still happens in Arab families too, I bet?

If the arranged marriage is a cultural custom, and all parties are 100% supportive who am I to object?

I have a friend from India who's in an arranged marriage.  Strange to me, but she seemed (before ever knowing of the guy or that she would be getting married) pleased to not have to worry with the trouble of finding someone.

I don't know.  If someone is willing to have such a thing chosen for them, then I've no problem with it.  It's the cases where it's forced upon someone that bother me.

Here's another scenario.

Two princes, say one from the Spanish court and one from the far East - both wish to set up an alliance with a certain "desirable" royal house.

Both princes spend their lives trying to win over the princess in question.

Romantic?

Simply a power move?

Angel Down, I think you'd have enjoyed the old Saturday Night Live Jon Lovitz sketch, "Tales of Ribaldry."

I thought ribaldry was something common to the lower classes.

This thread is all about Royal Houses.

I do like Jon Lovitz though... ok

Yeah we had one of those religios factions in my town growing up that had arranged marriages.  Most of the time the people knew each other growing up, it wasn't necessarily decided upon by the church or family, but I guess in some cases it was.  At least I heard stories.  They were free to live their lives as anyone would until they decided to officially join the church.  At that point all the rules changed, they usually ended up joining after some landmark event in their lives.  They get strung out on drugs one night and all of a sudden they "see the light".  Once they join the church they marry someone within the church.  It's really a crazy thing.  I was friends with a lot of these people as kids, and then never hear from them again once they "see the light".  We always viewed the religion as some sort of a cult.  They're 2 steps away from the Amish.  They're a tight nit group though, they take care of each other.  Just seems weird to me.

I've always thought that the Amish were peaceful people.

I didn't mean to insinuate that the Amish weren't peaceful.  My point was that everyone knows about the Amish, and nobody I've ever told has ever heard of Apostolic Christians. Somehow they fly under the radar.
