Its something different and will be a big surprise

« on: June 15, 2005, 11:35:37 PM »

HOST: What do you think of Velvet Revolver?

GILBY: I think.....(pauses) well I mean look, they are what they are, they are straight forward hard rock. What you see is what you get. They are definitely a great band.

HOST: You seemed kind of conflicting in that answer (laughs)

GILBY: Well it's just...(laughing) ah man, well I get the feeling they aren't really into it.. like Slash and Duff, mostly Slash. I mean Slash is playing, but he's not really PLAYING. Listen to the record dude, is that really Slash? I just kind of feel at times his heart isn't really into what that band is doing, like he's going through the motions. Man i'm gonna get myself into trouble (Laughing)

HOST: Do you think he wants to re-unite with Axl?

GILBY: Shit..(laughing). Look I'm sure if they could both sit down and talk and smooth things over it would happen, but the chances of that happening are slim and none, and slim just left the building. But yeah, I mean.. in the back of their minds they BOTH want to get the thing back together. See Axl and Slash hate each other, at the same time I think they know they..uhhh.....complete each other.. wow that sounded lame, but yeah.

HOST: Is Axl's ego what is keeping the band apart?

GILBY: Axl isn't really... well, (laughing), Axl is definitely an egomaniac. Not in the sense the word is usually used... Axl isn't an egomaniac in the sense that he wants all the glory to himself. I mean shit, look at GNR songs over the years, even the new ones, he lets everyone in the band get their stuff in and shine. The problem is, he's an egomaniac in the sense it has to be HIS way. "So it's like, yeah Slash go ahead and do whatever solo you want, but it has to be on MY song, the song I WANT, and if I don't like the song then we aren't using it". He sort of disregards what the rest of the band thinks and does it his own way. It wasn't always like that though.

HOST: You mentioned the new stuff, what's your opinion on it?

GILBY: It's not really my cup of tea.. and that's not to say it's bad, its just not my style. Axl is trying to go into a direction of like...shit, old Guns N Roses, mixed with Nine Inch Nails, mixed with the fuckin New York Philharmonic, mixed with Elton John. He's just really conflicted, one minute he wants to do some huge ass 10 minute epic song and the next he wants to do It's So Easy.

HOST: If GNR reunites, do you want to be on board?

GILBY: (laughs) Hey I'd love it dude,as long as all the drama is pushed to the side. I'm sure most Guns fans are gonna want Stradlin (laughing), but I would do it if asked.

HOST: Thanks for the time Gilby.

Gilby is a cool ass motherfucker, ive seen him a couple times over the last few years, and was kinda surprised by his lead playing, he can play his ass off, I guess thats why GNR wanted him, and now Heart or whoever, he's a great player and a cool ass guy

Gilby made an interesting comment when asked about hearing the new material. !0 MINUTE EPIC? That doesn't describe any of the new songs we heard during the 2002 tour. This statement basically proves my theory that ex members have heard some of the album. I always figured they had sources close to Axl. I always liked Gilby. His Pawnshop Guitars album kicks ass. I was disappointed when Axl got rid of him. But Gilby is right, IF a GNR reunion ever occured, we would want Izzy. But no disrespect to Gilby.

Richard Fortus, the phenomenon

« Reply #7 on: June 16, 2005, 04:56:13 AM »

Gilby is right when he says Axl and Slash COMPLETE each other. you put Axl and you put Slash and in a second something magic happens. They both know that. That's the biggest difference between the original band and the new one. Axl and Finck isn't magic, neither is Scott and Slash. these associations aren't thrilling. Finck seems to be a nice guy, but he is neither a guitar hero nor a big Rockstar. He is no Slash. For Scott, he is no Axl.
Slash is THE ONLY lead guitarist who can play with Axl and vice versa. For the ruythm guitar, Izzy, Gilby and Fortus can do it. I love izzy and gilby, but Richard is the guy I would keep on rythm guitar from the new band if a reunion ever happens because I think he is the most talented player among the three. He is the highlight of the new members for me.

? Thanks younggunner. ?The reason I loved reading this interview, is that it seems so honest. ?Here's a guy who'd want nothing more than to hop on board the GNR train, but pretty much knows it'll never happen. ?He sees the same thing out of VR I do...but the only thing I disagree on is the GNR new stuff. ?I actually do think the new stuff is "magical." ?And, I love the fact that Axl can do NY Philharmonics for 10 minutes followed by something like Chinese Democracy or It's so Easy.

 peace ?

Um, call me crazy, but I have a feeling Gilby hasn't heard one track of Chinese. I am sure he is referring to OMG or a few live boots. I don't think anyone in Axl's camp is walking around with a copy of Chinese and letting ex band members listen.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes For fuck's sake, I doubt the current band members even have copies of the album!

Great interview with the great guy!  beer I always liked Gilby, he is a down-to-earth and honest guy (one of the reasons why he was fired). He has some really good points in this interview (btw I think that Slash is really into this VR project, but he couldn't deny it's not his favourite type of music).

No doubt, there's no chance in hell Gilby's heard anything more than we have.

Gilby seems like a realist, which is cool.  He always seems to present himself in a positive fashion and comes off very well in most of the interviews I've seen or read

Like most GnR fans I prefer Izzy's playing. But if I think Gilby were on board it would definitely last longer. There wouldn't be as much tension about, because seems to me Gilby's easy to get on with. And noone has ever (in my experience) slammed Gilby in an interview or whatever.

How does that equate to honesty??

If you like it you say so, if you dont you say so...that's honesty I woulda thought. Gilby does criticize Axl.....he stated around 95 or so that Axl's ego was out of control and he was demanding every song on an Illusion followup be his and not being open to the rest of the bands songs or vision. That is criticism. Valid or not I dont know, but seems more likely than not.

that's not the definitionof an egomaniac, that's the definition of a control freak, two very different things, and it's not a bad thing unless you don't understand the situation and who's who.

Also don't forget His great involvement in Roots of Guns N' Roses.
Apparently The guy some ppl call "honest" betrayed the confidence of the certain individual some ppl call "fragile".

That should have been the last straw. Angry

I just wonder when this interview was done.
