Post by: Booker Floyd on March 17, 2004, 07:19:32 PM
Well it seems Buckethead is no longer a member of Guns N' Roses...Who do you think should/will replace him (realistically).

Im still confused on who is actually "lead" guitarist.  However its looking like Axl might be going on GNR 3.0.  I say he makes Gilby Clarke lead guitarist.  Get back to the basics, and give Clarke the opportunity to make GNR music unlike his first run with them.

Unfortunately it seems many of the star players, such as Dave Navarro and Zakk Wylde, are no longer available and probablty weary to Axls deal.

Keep Fortus as rhythm...and if Finck leaves, keep it down to two guitarists.  Cut Pitt,an while youre at it.  I mean, we all understand how necessary it is to have a guy playing sound effects on unplugged keyboards in a rock band, but somehow I think the band will survive without him.

As for drummers (assuming Mantia leaves like many suspect he will) whos your pick?  Anybody is fine with me, from Steven Adler to Josh Freese.

And before you know it, youve got a band that resembles the look and feel of the old band.

I'd say yes on the brian thing and no for now on the izzy-steven thing

I don't know who Zack is, but Zakk Wylde would be a good choice!  : ok:

I hope its a possibility, GNR need a guitarist and shortly a drummer too, but more importantly they need credibility - Izzy and Steven would combine all of that in one

Could it happen? This is GNR - anything's possible, i'm expecting Axl to quit the band next....

Drummer - Steven Adler. This guy has to be in the frame (okay i'm kidding myself) but we all know Steven would love to rejoin.

Zakk is probably my 3rd favorite guitar player. But I think hes more of a metal guitar player. GNR needs a hard rock/bluesy player like Perry, Page, Slash. And I cant think of anyone in the actual music that has that characteristic

Title: Re:The Inevitable Replacements Thread...
Post by: bill213 on March 17, 2004, 07:30:01 PM
Why the hell would Zakk want to leave BLS and OZZY, two things he's put his blood sweat and tears for into GNR, he's beeing qouted as of late as saying the only way GNR would do anything ever again is for Axl to cut the bullshit and get the original five back together.
As for Izzy and Steven I don't think they're coming back but Brain is probably out the door.

If Izzy wont even join VR, a band that already has a completed album ready, I doubt he'll join Axl's project that may be out in 04, 05, 06

Answer is no, the history says it all.

Izzy wouldnt even join Slash, Duff, Matts band

Do you reeeeeeeeeeeely think for 1 second he would join this mess???

Steven would join in a second.. but i dont think so Axl will let him after Steven shot Erin up with a bunch of herion...

You are a dreamer !!!
I would like that too, but I think is not possible... well... Brain can left the band, he is a good friend with BH, but I think he is still on the band and Izzy/Steven... please ! It would kick ass, specially Izzy, cause I consider him an Axl the main of old GNR but it is not possible.

Preferabley, no replacement.  Finck stays and what the hell, keep the goofy guitar puncher too..

If  a  replacement is inevitable, realistically that is, no first rate player in their right mind would take the gig.  I'm not saying a never was been like Tracii Guns, but a Gary Sunshine type would be cool.  His work in NY Loose was brilliant.

Didnt Gliby say that he knew he was out of GNR "when the checks stopped coming. I took it as a hint."?

I dont know how tight they are now, but that's gotta hurt.

Why the hell would Zakk want to leave BLS and OZZY, two things he's put his blood sweat and tears

Zakk has stated in no uncertain terms that he will never leave Ozzy's side.  You'll never see him playing alongside anyone else, aside from BLS.

Quote
As for Izzy and Steven I don't think they're coming

Nope.  Steven said he'll only do Guns N Roses if it were the original members.  Izzy doesn't want to be in any band with Axl.

I think for atlleast Rio, Paul will step back into the fold for his long time friend Axl. Maybe im way off, but didn't Gilby sue Axl or management after he left for unpayed royalties or something. I think its absurd to think Izzy in a million years would play under the name: "Guns N' Roses". There is nothing but animosity and hatred between him and Axl. Remember Slash said he wanted no part of any band with a singer due to his experience with Axl...Adler who knows though. He looks quite messed up and permafried judging by most interviews. If he is in dire need of a paycheck he might do it, but I truly doubt Axl would ever be interested in any gig with him.

Remember back in 99 (I think) when Axl got up on stage with Gilby for a couple of tunes? I think it was Wild Horses. I hardly think they hate each other. And that was like Axl's first appearance in how long?

Stop treating Gilby like a fucking puppet

You'd think he'd join Roses N' Roses only to be thrown out a few months/years later?

He played no part whatsoever in the making of CD.

Fact is, it doesnt matter who joins does it?  Nobody in their right mind would lose all self-respect like that.

No it was in 2000 not 1999. It was on Thursday June 22nd, 2000, West Hollywood, California, United States at the Cat Club. They played two songs 1. Wild Horses 2. Dead Flowers

After five years and 174 days since Axl Rose took the stage last time on Wednesday January 19th, 1994 at the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony he took the stage again on that night with his one time band member.

I think Brain must just quit also.  I hope not.  :nervous:

But if the band ever continues to exist... get Steven or Josh Freese on drums, Fortus to co-lead guitars with Finck, as BH replacement and ANYONE else as a rythim guitar player.

It?s so sad...

The only problem I see with the latter is collosal ego.... and this might be a lot of Robin's material, so he should get to solo on a lot of it.

if it's anybody but Bucket coming back or muthafuckin Slash, it'll be a sorry joke.

however, we needn't worry; unless there's some kind of covert situation going on behind the scenes, Guns N' Roses is over, as much as it pains me to say.

and it's not because Bucket's gone per se, it's because Axl can't hold the band together by doing the one thing he needs to do.....put out the album. This has gotten to be a joke.

BUCKETHEAD IS THE MAN!

...but, seeing as how he's not in Guns N' Roses anymore, let me offer a list of possible alternatives, even though Bucket should still be there, if Axl could get his damn act together...

1) Tom Morello
Easily the best and most original guitar hero of the 90s.  Spacey sci-fi sounds that could bring a modern edge to the Guns N' Roses sound while avoiding the noodling that Buckethead was apparently prone to.  Finally, he gives GN'R name recognition among younger rock fans.
2) Wes Borland
The less annoying focal point of Limp Bizkit has a style that could easily fill in the gap left by Buckethead's departure.  Once again, he could bring GN'R to a younger audience.  His rap-metal style would mesh well with Axl's desire to "update" the GN'R sound, even if that particular subgenre is a bit past it now.
3) Brian May
He's been working with Axl a lot over the past few years.  He has an immediately recognizable hard rock style, and he still looks pretty good for his age.  Don't know if Axl would want him, though, precisely because he suffers from the same thought patterns that afflicted many other 80s hard rock bands, i.e. that they have to "update their sound".
4) Jack White
That would just be cool to see.
5)Eddie Van Halen
What else is he going to do...play with Van Halen??

My hope: TRACII GUNS

He formed gunsroses with axl. He is in brides of destruction now along with nikki sixx from motley crue.

Motley crue has a reunion set to 05 so there is a possibillity for an unemplyed tracii to join axl (in 2005 though).

It's tracii playing guitar

Replacements:

Bryan May - i think its Axl's only hope, they are friends, Bryan doesn't have anything better to do either....and he is good enough, plus he would be a 'big name' for credibility

Drummer - Steven Adler. This guy has to be in the frame (okay i'm kidding myself) but we all know Steven would love to rejoin.

Axl has enough of the old man/nostalgia act vibe surrounding him as it is.  I think the last thing he needs to do now is start collaborating with a Grandpa-aged guitarist from '70s rock act Queen.

I'm sorry to see Buckethead go if this is the case. If I'm being fair I haven't heard much of the new stuff besides Madagascar so I guess the jury is still out on how good he was for Axl.

To keep on topic, here's what I think:

Slash (but only if a re-union)

Zakk Wylde (of old, unsure about now)

John Pertrucci (but I'd hate to see him leave Dream Theater)

Ginger Wildheart - some of you may not know Ginger but I think he is an awesome guitar player - Wildhearts fans - remember a song called 'Fire Up'? - very slash!)

Jim Martin (did you know that he now grows pumpkins for a living)

Kirk Hammett (whoops I forgot he doesn't do solos now)

Justin Hawkins....just kidding but made me giggle!

U beat me to posting this thread

Replacements:

Bryan May - i think its Axl's only hope, they are friends, Bryan doesn't have anything better to do either....and he is good enough, plus he would be a 'big name' for credibility

Bryan May would be awesome. If Axl would release a fuckin' album and tour it would probably increase the chances of getting somebody of that caliber.

Well i think we've established there are plenty of replacements out there who have nothing better to do...

I don't care who is brought in as long as Robin Finck isn't playing lead......oh its just too awful to think about

WES BORLAND, are you fucking crazy man. NO WAY DUDE.
N' JACK WHITES a one power chord wonder.

If any body to be honest...................(drumroll)....................
DAVE NAVARRO people. Na c'mon listen, when i bought JANES new album (STRAYS) i checked out the group shot in the middle and as soon as i saw Mr. Navarro i thought, fuck man, you belong in gunners. His image is old school and after all, he played on OH MY GOD, but its not just about  his image, he's style is unfuckingbeleivable, its not just cool........................................................its gunners.

does anyone know the picture im on about.
he's the man im tellin' ya!! :smoking:

I'm sorry to have to admit this, but there are several people mentioned in this thread who I prefer Finck to ... and that says something, because me and Finck don't exactly get along musically.

I do hate Limp Bizkit, but keep in mind that Wes Borland ALSO hates Limp Bizkit. WB really is a talented guitar player regardless of dumb decisions he has made in the past and though he probably can't make everything look effortless like Bucket, he could probably step into the shoes of him.

I personally think they'll just keep it at 2 guitarists though. I doubt Axl wants to go on a wild goose chase for another Buckethead.

I wish people would stop talking about "Finck's goth image." He gave it up in favor of the gay milkman image - haven't you seen it? It's actually pretty cool, especially compared to the old one. And must people discredit his playing ("oh god, now we're stuck with Finck") ? Have you watched him pull off any of Slash's stuff? It's pretty sweet. I don't know if he writes awesome stuff, but I do know he can play quite nicely.

My hope: TRACII GUNS

He formed gunsroses with axl. He is in brides of destruction now along with nikki sixx from motley crue.

Motley crue has a reunion set to 05 so there is a possibillity for an unemplyed tracii to join axl (in 2005 though).

http://homepage.mac.com/spollitt/STFU.mov

It's tracii playing guitar

this is very true i read motley was gonna reunite in 05.....so what would traci do,go back to gnr ;D ;) :)

Maybe Axl should do Estranged at RIR 4 and dedicate it to Buckethead.  Might touch him and convince him to come back.

they dont need more players, finck rules! its just so many people hate him cuz he is "goth" so he doesnt fit in with whats normal. now why people loved BH, is kinda beyond my mind :p both are great players, evethough BH was a little beter  :hihi:

This is what id like to see happen

Brian May fills in on guitar at rio, then he helps axl finish off Chinese Democracy and then when Motley Crue reunites in 05 Traci Guns becomes the full time lead guitar player. then itd truly be Guns N Roses.

i also think Wes Borland would be an awsome fit.

Isn't Josh Freese in Evanescence now? I really doubt he would leave a promising career with them to join Axl's freakshow...  ::)
Josh is in A Perfect Circle and josh helped tommy out on his solo record and has played in guns n roses before it would be a good fit but I don't think it will happen.I think the possibility of a reuion is greater now than in the past because Velvet Revolver keeps pushing the album back much like another band I know.I dont think GN'R is done yet no matter what slash or axl says you know deep inside they want to be back on stage with one another and even if izzy won't touch a reuion they can allways keep richard I like his stylr or they could get dave kushner if slash and matt would do it and if tommy leavs they can talk to duff i don't think he is as bitter as the other members are in fact I think all the bitterness is almost gone all the old guys have said they still have love for axl. These are just my thoughts.

If Buckethead is out, Axl's got some challenge ahead of him. Apart from finding someone to replace him - and he's surely exhausted all the possibilities, given that practically every guitarist in LA's been in his new GN'R at one point or another - he's got to strip Buckethead's guitar parts from the album, re-record them with the new guitarist, rehearse with the new guitarist and the band, and possibly re-record whole tracks from the album (to get that "chemistry" that you only get from having players in a room with each other). Oh yeah, and the new boy (or girl) might want to bring their own stuff to the table in the form of new songs. And all this has to be done before Rio. And they might have to go through the whole process with a drummer, if Brain tags along with Bucket. Great. Slash must be laughing his ass off right about now...

There are possibilities though. Axl's still friendly with Zakk Wylde, isn't he? He's got the skills, and more importantly the GN'R vibe that many naysayers (myself not included) claimed Buckethead lacked. As for drummers, I suppose there's Josh Freese. Would either of these high-profile artists be willing to hitch themselves to Axl's train wreck, though? The other possibility is to do a Limp Bizkit and hold open auditions, in the hope that some unknown virtuoso might be found in a backstreet guitar shop.

Hell, it's not as if he can even phone Slash and beg him to come back. I mean, the top-hatted one has his own high-profile band that are in a great position to capitalise on the Greatest Hits release. Axl's engineered his own downfall here. :(

Sod it, I'm off to listen to some Velvet Revolver.

SG

Title: Re:Who to replace Buckethead?

I don't know why everyone thinks Zakk Wylde has a huge ego.  He doesn't, he's just stubborn.  There's a difference.

Anyway, if he sorted out his crappy rythym tone, then I think he'd be the best man for the job, because he'd give Axl the massive kick up the backside he's been deserving for the last 5 years.

But unless Ozzy quits touring (which is very unlikely) then I don't see it happening.

But that's not gonna happen anyway.  Axl is going to leave GN'R.  Dizzy will carry on, but Axl is going to join Van Halen.  He is the perfect fit.  He's overwieght. He's an egomaniac.  His hair isn't his own.  No-one wants to work with him.  He's like Dave Lee Roth II.

1) Drink less caffine.  It'll help both the verbal diahrea and the shakes.  : ok:

2) It's hardly a ridiculous comment.  It's a thread about who we think could replace BH....I'm giving my opinion.

3) I have a job...a very good one.  I also have more than enough work to keep me busy. However, I'm also quite skilled at multitasking, and posting here doesn't exactly take a whole lot of attention.

4) As opposed to you? Who has posted once??  And I would venture that a good number of people do think I say interesting things....If you'd prefer not to read them..skip 'em.  I assure you, my feelings will not be hurt.

5) Read the forum rules.  Elsewise, your post count might not climb much past its' current level.

Have a GREAT DAY! :hihi:

If you were talking to me...which I don't know if you were because I didn't read most of the thread...then I'd like to point out I was merely contemplating the idea that Ozzy may not continue for that much longer.  I mean, after the quad bike thing, who knows?  I know he's doing Ozzfest, and I'm sure Sharon will keep him going as long as is humanly possible (and probably quite a bit further), but the amount of drugs he's taken is enough to kill about 30 people so...

Maybe they could grab the guitar player from Blind Melon...  Axl must've had a few run-ins with the guys from that band back when Shannon was alive.

If Axl does get a replacement it should be a noname guy like Fortus was. Borland, Moody and whoever else you may have named from an Emo or NuMetal band already has a history. Axl's GNR needs to be about Axl. He needs to be the main attraction, not some "name" guitarist that draws 12 year old girls

I've heard that Jerry Cantrell and Billy Duffy were working together... I like 'em both (Jerry is a guitar god!!!!!!!!!!! Degradation trip vol. 1 & 2 = masterpiece), so...what about one of 'em?
Three guitarists: Jerry Cantrell = lead (a little metal, technical)
Billy Duffy = other lead (more "rock n' roll" than Jerry maybe)
Richard Fortus = rythm (and some leads, he's fuckin' good!)
I like Robin Fink too, so...what about Guns n' roses with FOUR guitarists? ;D

The only person who can fill BH shoes is Slash.

Slash, Steven, Izzy, Duff, Axl (and Mr. Diswald Reed on keyboards)

That line up constitutes the best band ever even though they are non existant.
