Title: The Verve
Post by: grendood on January 15, 2005, 03:41:40 AM
what does everyone think of this truley great band.

3 albums theyve got, has anyone actually heard all of them? id be surprised..... Urban hymns is easily one of the best albums ever made, and some would say it was the last great album made, released in 1997. Northern soul really flows as an album with epic songs such as "history"... I really love richard ashcrofts lyrics he is one of the best songwriters of all time.

Storm In heaven
A Northern Soul
Urban Hymns

I've only heard Urban Hymns. It's good, but didn't make me a fan.

The Verve are good but Ashcroft doesn't come close to being one of the best song writers of all time, in my opinion.

Hmmm. Bitter Sweet Symphony is a nice peaceful song. Heard it in 'Cruel Intentions'

i've got all 3 albums.  I actually think Northern Soul is the best album from start to finish, it's too bad no band can make music like that now.  The Verve were a one off.  Urban Hymns has their more classic numbers I would have to agree.  I'v only heard what Ashcroft's released as singles so far, none of his albums.  Are they worth buying?  He certainly seems to capture a bit of the Verve sound.

I guess the only album I liked was A Storn In Heaven.  I was never a fan of the brit-pop scene - but I don't really conder them or Radiohead much a part of it.

I don't actually own any Verve albums, but I'm sure Urban Hymns will make it's way into my collection when I'm at a record store one day.

I have both of Ashcroft's solo albums (at least I think there's only 2?).  I haven't listened to the second one too much (The Human Condition).  I think the first 4 tracks off Alone With Everybody are absolutely incredible though.

Yes, I've heard Urban Hymns... what I meant was I've never been in a record store and thought about picking up a copy of the CD at the same time.  :P

I basically know only 2 of their songs...one of them in my opinion is one of the saddest songs ever: The Drugs Don?t Work.

I picked up Urban Hymns the other week, forgotten just how good the Verve are - this is an amazing album, a genuine classic, deffinetly the best album by a British band in many a year.

now, I am using myself as a source here but:

I think most of us only know "Bitter Sweet Symphony"  and some other songs but we don't connect them with the bands name.

I dunno, I dont really know much @ all about them!

I always thought Symphony was written by the Stones..then I found out it is just the synthesizer loop which was used in another Stones song. I read that Ashcroft used it without permission and as a result had to pay royalties everytime the song had airtime and had to share writing credits with Jagger and Richards.  Apparently, he said that 'Its the best song Stones have written in 20 years'.

He might be right...if a song can capture so much in a few verses and express it with such depth through the singer's voice, this is it.

Also, Coldplay introduced Ashcroft onstage by saying something like "Here is the greatest song ever written, by the greatest singer in the world, Mr. Richard Ashcroft"

Ashcroft is quickly becoming one of my favorite singers...not only are his lyrics great, you can feel the tension, the pain and the fragility in his voice. Best of all, he can do it with nothing but a guitar...and probably doesn't even need that.

For those who don't know, Oasis wrote Cast No Shadow about Ashcroft.

What song is it?

I've always thought the song was "You can't always get what you want" but apperantly it's not.

What song is it?

"This samples an obscure orchestral version of "The Last Time," a 1965 song by the Rolling Stones. This was recorded before they got permission from the Stones to use the riff, so the Verve had to sign away most of the royalties from this in order to release it."

There's more stuff on there.

I think they had a few breakups, the guitarist refused to join. After some convincig, they reunited but finally broke up for good when the guitarist left permanently.

I got drawn to their music after hearing Ben Harper do a live cover of "The Drugs Dont Work" a great but depressing song.

The new album is pretty good.  The songs are all on the longer side, though, but its definitely worth checking out.
