Title: slayer
Post by: im rickjames bitch on February 24, 2005, 02:26:42 AM
im thinking of buying a slayer cd i think its called superior intervention or something. is it any good? is it thrash metal? i dont want to buy it and it ends up being hard rock like megadeth's countdown to extinction (that is still a great album though).

Start with Slayer's first 2. Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits. After that, get Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss in any order.

Reign in Blood is very overrated compared to their early stuff. It's fast, but it's short and there are some mediocre songs. South of Heaven is slower, and although many love it, I'm not crazy about it. Seasons in the Abyss is my 3rd favorite Slayer album, after the first 2.

Just don't get anything after Seasons in the Abyss.

Just don't get anything after Seasons in the Abyss.

This is very good advice.

Reign in Blood is my favorite Slayer album, overrated or not.

reign in blood is a must have if you're a metal fan. i think it's the greatest metal album ever. without a doubt in the top 5.

and recently i gave "god hates us all" a little more of a chance, and i actually like it alot.

the album you mentioned (it's actually called divine intervention) is good, not great. there's a couple real good songs on there, but the albums mentioned in this thread are all better choices.

DI does not have dave lombardo on drums either.

Good ole' Slayer - Reign in blood is the album to go for, the rest are a pretty mixed bunch, and later offering are innaccesible even to the hardened fan, their musical ability isn't completetly submerged on their earlier albums so they are the one's to have a shot at.

Divine Intervention is actually a pretty solid offering though.

Come on, there's nothing "mixed" about the first 2, they're great! RiB just has too much filler in between 2 legendary songs. To someone new to Slayer, Show no Mercy is a better choice.

I'm not a big fan of Slayer but if you get a chance to see them live take it.  They are fucking brutal live, one of the best acts I've seen

Their latest album, Christ Illusion, is really good.  :)

Oh no - if u like it it must be 40 odd mins of static...

God hates us all was just loud noise without any melody at all - i'll need to be convinced before i waste more money on slayer albums

God Hates Us All is practically a mallcore album. Christ Illusion is Slayer's best album since Seasons in the Abyss. Hell, it's even a little better, I think; Seasons had many pop undertones. Christ Illusion keeps the mallcore tone, but uses actual thrash riffs, and the songwriting is very inspired.

Of course, it won't top Slayer's legendary first 3 albums (Show No Mercy, Hell Awaits, Reign In Blood), but very little thrash does. It's a very good effort from the band, especially considering their age. It's aggressive without being overly macho and pretentious.

As someone else said, they are an amazing live band.  I had 8th row tickets back in 90 for the Clash of the Titan tour with Anthrax, Megadeth and AIC.  Slayer impressed me enough live for me to become a fan.  Kerry King rules!!

I don't own any Slayer albums and can't understand why.  I do like em I just never get/got round to getting anything of them, just one of those weird things!  My brother did get me War At The Warfields DVD though.  I'll get Christ Illusion.

Aahhhh Slayer, one of the greatest bands to ever grace the earth.

Start with Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss. Hell Awaits rules too but Show No MErcy is a little cheesy and dated, but still great. Reign in Blood is at the very top of the list for greatest metal albums ever.

Divine intervention is pretty poor, Diabolus in Musica is crap, and God Hates Us All is Nu-metal. Nuff said.

Surprisingly, Christ Illusion is pretty damn good even if it does have one of the worst Slayer songs ever on it - Eyes of the Insane.

No!  Get the classics first! It will put Christ Illusion in a better perspective. Get Show No Mercy, Hell Awaits, Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven, and maybe download samples of the later albums.  ;) Don't misunderstand me. Christ Illusion is a killer comeback, but it's not as good as the old 80's stuff, but that's a high standard to try and reach, and Slayer did a respectable job with this album.

No!?
Too late

I normally like to go 'in order' but sometimes it just doesn't work like that.  Same with Metallica - like most people I got the Black album, then Master Of Puppets etc.  First Megadeth album I got was Rust In Peace.  At least with GN'R I got AFD first, but then that's a given.

'Big 4' metal bands Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax to perform April 23 in Indio
Empire Polo Club will be only U.S. stop for groups, Goldenvoice promoter says

Four of the world?s top heavy metal bands are tentatively scheduled to perform April 23 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio ? during the one dark Saturday between the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, it was announced today.

The Los Angeles-based Goldenvoice company told The Desert Sun in an exclusive interview it won a bid last weekend to present the only United States concert by the lineup of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.

The concert promoters are scheduled to present a proposal to the Indio City Council at 5 p.m today for permission to stage the concert from around 4 to 11 p.m. Indio Mayor Lupe Ramos Watson said Monday she plans to attend the show if the council approves a permit.

?I grew up in the time of Metallica,? she said. ?It?s an enjoyable experience.?

The tickets would be $99 plus fees and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster outlets.

Digitaldreamdoor.com ranks Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax as the four best thrash or speed metal bands, as distinguished from the broader genre of heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. The foursome have been touring Europe as The Big 4 and were widely expected to perform a tour of the United States.

But Goldenvoice promoter Paul Tollett said this will be their only U.S. concert. He categorized winning the bid over other concert promoters as ?winning the lottery.?

Tollett was forced to move Stagecoach: California?s Country Music Festival back to April 30-May 1 because it would have ended on Easter Sunday if it had maintained its tradition of following the April 15-17 Coachella Music and Arts Festival at the polo field. It might have cost Goldenvoice millions of dollars to keep equipment rentals and security on the Empire Polo Club for three weeks, but now there will only have to be minor adjustments to sandwich a third major concert between the two festivals.

There won?t be camping and there probably will be fewer concertgoers for The Big 4.

Tollett refused to speculate how many people the metal bands might attract, but Metallica drew 50,000 people for its 2003 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. Goldenvoice plans to run a shuttle service from four or five locations around Southern California to the polo club. It also will run shuttles to and from major hotels in the east valley.

Last year?s Coachella festival drew 225,000 people over three days, and Stagecoach attracted more than 100,000 over two days.

The festival will give Coachella Valley hotels major tourism events for five consecutive weeks with the Dinah Shore Weekend starting the celebrations March 30-April 3. The White Party in Palm Springs is scheduled the next weekend.

Watson said she won?t know how neighbors of the Empire Polo Club will feel about three major concerts on three consecutive weekends until they?ve had a chance to be heard at today?s City Council meeting, but she said past festivals have created ?a very positive experience for everyone who lives in the area.?

?My personal feelings are that the events held at the polo fields are a big boost to the economy for the Coachella Valley as a whole, not just the city of Indio,? she said. ?If you collectively count all the festivals that are held at the polo grounds, we have over a million visitors to our Coachella Valley annually and that brings with it disposable cash that gets spent in our community (and) creates job opportunities for our residents in the Coachella Valley. So I see it as a very important part of this CV?s economy.?

From Tom Araya: ?Sorry I couldn?t make the Sydney festival show. I am feeling much better and look forward to performing in Melbourne?
