When I get around to it I'll check it out............and (not that I go on such assumptions) but the album got some bad reviews (as far as I know)........but of course a lot of the stuff I listen to isn't supposed to be "good" if you know what I mean............

Don't know anything about "American Hardcore".
I do think that "Malaria" off of "Cocked and Loaded" is a cool song, though.

Title: Re: L.A Guns

IMO, American Hardcore is their worst album. It just has Tracii and Steve with a vocalist an bass guitarist they picked up at a club when the original band broke up after having recorded Vicious Circle.

I'll give you my ratings on their albums:

out of 10 points

L.A. Guns (7 - good debute album, raw and rocking but still far from what the guys were able to, btw, the Japanese version has the greatest song on the album as a bonus track: Winters Fool)

Cocked & Loaded (10 - pure sleaze, one of the greatest albums ever)

Hollywood Vampires (7 - good, but not too rocking compared to C&L)

Live! Vampires (6 - Japan only, live EP, for hardcore fans, I'd say, needless to buy if you have A Night On The Strip)

Cuts (9 - EP with mostly covers, but I love it - 3 different versions of it are out there)

Vicious Circle (5 - the band was nearly broken while recording, they didn't even talk to each other anymore, the results vary, some strong ones, some which suck big time and don't even sound like L.A. Guns)

American Hardcore (1 - pure crap to me)

Wasted (6 -EP)

Hollywood Rehearsal (8 - Phil put this out without asking Tracii and Steve. A collection of poorly recorded covers, but even though I like it a lot, especially their version of Should I Stay Or Should I Go, btw, also Japan only)

A Night On The Strip (9 - great live album)

Shrinking Violet (6 - Jizzy Pearl on vocals. not overwhelming, but a lot better than AH, btw, there are countless different versions out there)

Cocked & Reloaded (9 - one point off, in fact a completely needless re recording of Cocked & Loaded which also sounds better than the new one imo)

Man In The Moon (8 - a great one. Rocks but also has some songs you think you already heard on other albums)

Waking The Dead (10 - absolutely kickass - get it if you can)

Thanx for the ratings dude..........

But explain why you don't like "American Hardcore" a little better.........

Obviously it's completely different from other Guns music.............but I love it........

And either a person hasn't heard it......or they hate it.....

So could you explain in a musical sense why you think it's "crap"?.........

"I Am Alive" is a REALLY good song........
"Unnatural Act" is decent.....
"Kevorkian" I love.......
'Don't Pray".......cool......
"What I've become".....kinda funky......

I REALLY love that album.............It's one of those "gems" in my collection........IMO anyway.........

I like the singer......the direction of the music (It was really more of a concept album than anything else).......

Title: Re: L.A Guns
Post by: lastroots on November 25, 2003, 04:10:45 PM
The singer (sorry, I forgot the dude's name) is below everything imo. I know countless amateurs with way higher skills. I just can't listen to him. Going along with this, the lyrics are overly stupid. The childish agression combined with Traciis completely uninspired playing puts the album to death. And besides it sounds nothing like L.A. Guns, more of a band that is still in an early phase of rehearsal.

That's just what I think, so no offense to those who like it.  :peace:

Thought there was a thread on this somewhere.  I've only got into L.A. Guns properly in the last 2 or 3 months and i'm extremely surprised they aren't that well known 'cos they got some kick ass stuff and i agree Lastroots 'Waking The Dead' is a class album, i love the track 'Don't Look At Me That Way'.  I may be wrong but wasn't this album in some top 10 worst albums of 2002 along with Chinese Democracy (they assumed it would suck i think)

Guns N' Roses is actually named after Tracii so in that sense he had a lot of imput. According to official LA Guns website, Tracii left because "he didn't like the direction of their music" although i thought Axl and Izzy sacked him..... whatever.

Ballad of Jayne is on LA Guns second album, Cocked and Loaded which is their biggest selling platinum album. I think its brilliant and doesn't have a bad track on it - GO BUY! :hihi:

The reality is Duff arranged some gigs in Seattle - Tracii and Rob Gardner told Axl, Izzy and Duff they weren't going all the way from LA to Seattle for some gig and so he left the band with Steven Adler and Slash joining - imagine if Tracii and gone to that gig.......

Poor Tracii. That's gotta hurt. For a guy who quit GN'R because he didn't like their "musica; direction" he still seems to be hung up on them. He's on the "Appetite For Reconstruction" and "Rock Tribute to GN'R" albums, as well as the HollyWood Rose CD.

At anyrate, I love The LA Guns. A very underrated band, IMHO. Although they were good, they never made it huge, for some reason. Their self-titled debut is excellent, it just didn't have that "Hit" on it. It was sleazy and dirty, but lacked a few cheesy balleds and radio friendly songs that the mainstream crowd would dig.

"Cocked and Loaded" was more polished and radio friendly, and that got some attention. However, by the time "Hollywood Vampires: came out, the glam era was comming to a close.

All of their albums are good though. It's a shame that they never took off.

I read somewhere that Tracii said that he only plays on the tribute albums because they pay really well but he never listens to the end product. I'm guessing the reason he was playing on Hollywood Rose was mainly due to the fact that he is best friends with Gilby who produced/mixed it.

I think the fact that LA Guns have changed members so many times in the past 15 years also has a part to play in their demise. I thnk they are a truely underrated band but they will keep going downhill so long as Tracii is not in the band.

Guys, hellllp please.

L.A. Guns...

I got their Cocked and Loaded album now, I like it all right.

I don't want their new stuff... so I guess I should get their debut album?

Does anyone know the standout tracks by them or singles? So I can sample on what they think was good?

2002s "Waking the Dead" and 1988s self-titled album are their best, IMHO. I really like "Sex Action" from the debut.

I love L.A. Guns!  Ballad of Jayne seems to me to be one of the less formulaic power ballads - I've listened to it a hundred times and I still love it.  L.A. Guns were one of the more underrated hair metal bands, I think.  And their video for "Never Enough" pioneered the Ed Sullivan parody concept for a video long before Nirvana or Outkast did it.

One more random observation: I just noticed how in Terminator 2, the friend of John Connor - the kid with the mullet - is wearing an L.A. Guns t-shirt.  One more semi-GN'R link in that movie (in addition to "You Could Be Mine")

You know, you're right. There really isn't anything special about him. But it's entirely accurate to say that he is an extremely competent guartist, considering what he actually does. I mean he's no virtuoso like Malmsteen or the like, but he IS an underrated player. And I like his styling............ : ok:

L.A.Guns frontman Phil Lewis has posted a message on the forum at http://laguns.net saying the band is done with their forthcoming album, "Tales From The Strip" with is due out in July on Shrapnel Records.

Here's the tentative tracklist:

"90069"
"It Don?t Mean Nothing"
"Electric Neon Sunset"
"Gypsy Soul"
"Original Sin"
"Vampire"
"Hollywood?s Burning"
"Earth Shaker 7.1"
"Rox Baby Girl"
"Crazy Motorcycle"
"Skin"
"Shame"
"Resserection"
"(Can?t Give You) Anything Better Than Love" (instrumental)
Phil Lewis says in his post, ?I?m sure that by just reading the titles you can figure out that this is something of a concept album. It?s all set in and about the many strange beautiful lost angels here in Hollywood, hence the ?Tales From The Strip?. Steve Adam and Stacy gave me some amazing solid backing tracks to shout whine and scream over. Andy Johns and Bruce Witkin recorded and produced with skill precision and great humor. The songs sound like the could have come off Hollywood Vampires but with out all the slushy production. I?m sure if you?re an LAG fan you?ll love it.?

L.A. Guns is hitting the road with W.A.S.P., Stephen Pearcy and Wednesday 13 on the American Metal Blast 2005 tour.

Here are the tour dates so far:

7/8 at Mr. Kellys (formerly Oasis 160) in Chicago Heights, IL
7/9 at Royal Oak Theater in Detroit, MI
7/14 at Webster Theater in Hartford, CT
7/15 at Starland Ballroom in Saryville, NJ
7/16 at Brookhaven Amphitheater in Long Island, NY (+ TWISTED SISTER)
7/17 at Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughepsie, NY (+ Twisted Sister)
7/20 at House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ
7/21 at Crocodile Rock in Allentown, PA
7/22 at Jaxx in Springfield, VA
7/23 at Northern Lights in Albany, NY
7/28 at Jesters in Fayetteville, NC
7/29 at Janus Landing in St. Petersburg, FL
8/4 at East Gate Outdoor Fest in Moorhead, MN
8/5 at Lost Iguana Outdoor Field in Casper, WY
8/6 at Odgen Amphitheater in Ogden, UT

Ohhh a concept album, awesome stuff, i hope it's as good as their last effort, seems they'll be competing with founder Tracii Guns releasing the album in the same month as Brides of Destruction's new album.

I just became hooked on L.A. Guns about 3 months ago, and i have to say, Cocked and Loaded kicks ass.  The only other album of theirs I got is Hollywood Vampires, which I hate because it's got a "country" vibe to it.  Is their self-titled debut  or newer albums like CAL or HV?

That's weird..a country vibe?  The debut is very similar to Cocked...its very good as well.  I'd say their best work is Waking The Dead.  Tye new cover album is also good.

Night 1 -  House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

Steven Pearcy played a 45 minute Ratt n Roll set with his backing band the Rat Bastards. Pretty decent set. The only song that got the crowd moving was Round and Round

LA Guns come out. amazing as always. They play this 45 minute set.

1. No Mercy
2. Sex Action
3. Never Enough
4. Wheels of Fire
5. You Don't Mean Nothing
6. Hellraiser's Ball
7. Electric Gypsy
8. Vampyre
9. Rip and Tear

I would have loved to see them play a full set but since they aren't headlining, I had no luck.

Wasp sucks, I left before they came out to play.

Night 2 House of Blues Disneyland

Pearcy's band sucked tonight. His lead guitar was to high in the mix and we couldn't hear what he was singing. the best part was during lay it down when the guitarist broke a string, i could actually hear the vocals.

LA Guns were twice as amazing tonight!!! They played an extra song along with a different new song.

1. No Mercy
2. Sex Action
3. Wheels of Fire
4. Hollywood's Burning
5. Never Enough
6. Hellraiser's Ball
7. One More Reason
8. Electric Gypsy
9. Vampyre
10. Rip and Tear

After the set the band signed autographs at the merchandise booth and I got to meet all the guys in the band. I got a photo with everyone but phil, and if i ever get them out of my phone, i'll put them up here for everyone to see. They aren't the best quality, but they are cool none the less

The new record, Tales from the Sunset Strip comes out on August 14th.

By waiting around for autographs, wasp got started before I left, and they proved how much they sucked.

Funny that no-one mentioned there have been two other L.A. Guns releases in the past year and half or so...

The cover albums "Rips the Covers Off"

and a CD of demos called "Hollywood Raw" which includes their debut 1984 EP..with their original singer...Mickey something or other, I can't remember.

I also have a CD that their other singer before Phil Lewis put out on his own called "Black City Breakdown" - again, its a disc of L.A. Guns' early demos. Very cool..got it off eBay - was supposed to be autographed, but it wasn't...bastard.

But yeah, L.A. Guns do kick ass! Here's what I have by them:

L.A. Guns - Black City Breakdown

L.A. Guns - Self Titled

L.A. Guns - Cocked and Loaded

L.A. Guns - I Wanna Be Your Man EP

L.A. Guns - Hollywood Vampires

L.A Guns - Cuts

L.A. Guns - Vicious Circle

L.A. Guns - American Hardcore

L.A. Guns - Greatest Hits & Black Beauties

L.A. Guns - Live! A Night On The Strip

L.A. Guns - Man In The Moon

L.A. Guns - Waking The Dead

-Jeff

Rips The Covers off is very good.  I don't own it, but a friend of mine does.  They cover some pretty obscure songs, which is pretty cool.  You get tired of bands covering the same song over and over.  It sucks that a lot of their stuff is kinda hard to find.  I thought they only had a few albums, but there's so much stuff they've done that is pretty hard to find in record stores.

Actually Steve Riley didn't drum on the first L.A. Guns album.  If you'll look at the liner notes, it lists Steve as the drummer of the band, but it also says "all drum tracks played by Nickey Alexander" right below where it lists the band.  Wow, I'm a real loser for knowing that.

I bet Tracii has some demos w/Axl Rose. Either pre-Slash GN'R or very early LA guns. I'd love to hear them.

Guitarist Tracii Guns has reunited THE ORIGINAL L.A. GUNS with the following lineup: Paul Black - vocals, Tracii Guns - guitar, Nickey Alexander - drums, Mick Cripps - guitar and Kelly Nickels - bass. The band are set to hit the road next year. The following dates, minus venues, have already been leaked: January 25 - Las Vegas 26 - San Diego 27 - Los Angeles 28 - San Francisco. February 1 - Portland 2 - Seattle 4 - Tahoe 5 - Reno. Apparently The Original L.A. Guns will not interfere with Tracii Guns' commitments to BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION.

Wait, so will there be two LA Guns? ?The LA Guns? and ?The original LA Guns.?? How spinal tap is that? That?s like RATT and Stephan Pearcy?s RATT.

Btw, the new Brides of Destruction CD sucks.

No hooks, sounds forced. Tracii is better than that. The new LA Guns CD (without Tracii) is pretty good.

He said this L.A. Guns thing was only 'temporary' and would NOT interfere with his Brides of Destruction commitments, i would still go and see them live, due to the strong first record, L.A. Guns tracks that will get thrown in there and the fact they should still be a good live act and most probably and a cheap one playing small venues which is just the way i like it.  Anyway i have slagged off many an album considered 'Decent'....it might be a success...you might like it the single White Trash ain't bad and Never Say Never is fait decent.  This album seems to showcase London Le Grande's vocal frailties more, i remember when i saw them live it was damn good but he was the weak link, he had the look and attitude but lacks the range...

I'll give them album a few more listens then write a proper review in The Brides thread so you have a more detailed idea of what it's like..

Tracii Guns is a fuckin' loser.  If he wants to be back in L.A. Guns he should just go back with Phil.  I refuse to recognize this Original L.A. Guns.  Phil's L.A. Guns is the true L.A. Guns in my eyes.  That Paul Black dude sucks anyway.

haha, that's ridiculously hilarious  :hihi:

imagine if slash, duff, izzy, adler somehow got back together and name themselves THE ORIGINAL GUNS N' ROSES... :D

EDIT: oh wait a minute, there's no need for that - by tracci's standards Velvet Revolver coul easily be renamed as THE ORIGINAL GUNS N' ROSES too, because it has three former GNR members

What are their best albums besides the first 2? I have those.

They have like 10 albums and I don't know much about their other ones.

two more after that have the original line up. after that phils gone, and the bass player (one of the main song writers) is also gone.

Hollywood vampires is very different from the first two albums, the metal influence is gone. And the guitar tones are different, kinda semi acoustic, sort of reminds me of the stones type tones, but there are some good tracks on the album still.

The album after that is a band trying to cope with the changed music scene and the material on there isnt focused, you get all sorts, give it a listen i cant really give you an opinion on it. You must hear it to judge.

After that, line up changes etc. They reunited with phil and did a covers album i think and a (great) live album. Then they fell out again and are touring seperate.

Two tickets to the Guns show

August 6, 2008

By Steven Patrick

Some bands simply do not get the respect and credit they deserve. LA Guns fits that mold. Along with such notorious contemporaries like Guns N' Roses and Motley Crue, LA Guns and their founder/lead guitarist Tracii Guns were there at the epicenter of Hollywood's Sunset Strip glam metal scene. LA Guns and Axl Rose's band Hollywood Rose merged to form Guns N' Roses. Therefore, Tracii was the first lead guitarist in Guns N' Roses before leaving to reform LA Guns. Guns' departure was one of the first casualties of GNR's heavy drug usage. Guns was then replaced on guitar by some guy in a top hat.

The reformed LA Guns then rose to fame alongside Guns N' Roses in the late eighties, peaking with the success of their 1989 album "Cocked and Loaded." The album yielded LA Guns' biggest hits with songs like "Never Enough," "Rip and Tear," and "The Ballad of Jayne." Numerous lineup changes have since dotted their past, but LA Guns has never failed to deliver the goods. Currently there are two rival lineups of the band in existence, but it's the writer's opinion that there is no such thing as LA Guns without the Guns man himself. Tracii was kind enough to answer a few questions concerning the current tour with Faster Pussycat, a local connection within the current lineup, and what we can expect from LA Guns in the future.

UW: I hear one of the band members is from the area?

Yeah, Chad [Stewart, the drummer]. He's from Zanesville, OH?real close to the Columbus area. Chad'll have a bunch of fans and old high school girlfriends showing up. *laughs* You never know with Chad. High school boyfriends?girlfriends?you never know. *laughs*

UW: So which came first, LA Guns or Hollywood Rose?

LA Guns came first, and then I hooked up with Axl [Rose]. We started Guns N' Roses. He had his band, Hollywood Rose, and I had LA Guns. Axl actually sang in LA Guns before Guns N' Roses. LA Guns started in high school with some friends?started playing around in the garage. Then I drew up an LA Guns logo on a blank record and thought that that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen in my life?and stuck with it ever since.

UW: What kind of stuff were you listening to when you started the band?

Well, LA Guns started out a cross between Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols?with a little bit of Aerosmith thrown in there?and a lot of Motley Crue. *laughs*

UW: Did the band name come from your stage name, or the other way around?

Uh, some chick gave me my name. Yeah, she just walked up to me and called me "Mr. Guns" one day, and that's been my name ever since.

UW: What was Rocklahoma [an annual festival of '80s-era rock] like this year?

This year it was very muddy. It was Flood-lahoma?lots of rain, and we got out of there just before the storms hit. Two of the side stages got wiped out. Tornados. It was like Oklahoma had a monsoon.

UW: The members of LA Guns and Faster Pussycat know each other pretty well, don't they?

Yeah, back in the day, Faster Pussycat and LA Guns started about the same time. Then there were members in LA Guns and members in Faster Pussycat that were starting bands together, and then now there are members in LA Guns and members in Faster Pussycat that are still playing together. It's just one big?you know?incestual orgy. *laughs* It's Rockla-homo!

UW: So is there ever any confusion between you guys and the other version of LA Guns that currently exists?

Oh no, we don't ever get confused. We always know where our shows are at. *laughs* No, well, maybe the same people show up to their shows too, but we always have a great crowd, and everyone seems to understand what's going on. Fans of this stuff?they read on the internet and they know everything that's going on.

UW: Can we expect a record from the Tracii Guns-led lineup of LA Guns?

Yeah, we just finished recording a record up in Ontario, Canada with producer Steve Thompson. We were up there for about two and a half months recording. It should be out probably early March of '09.

UW: With recent news that Steven Adler [original GNR drummer] is back in rehab, what's it like being one of the few veterans of the '80s LA rock scene that made it out alive?

It's good to keep the name going and keep the band strong. That's how I've been able to do it for the last twenty years. Some of those guys?some of those guys just seem to keep falling and some of us just keep moving on.

LA Guns will be playing at Cardo's in Chillicothe, OH on Monday, August 11 at 8 p.m. For more information, please visit www.lagunslive.com or www.gocardos.com.
