Title: Your "Greatest Hits II" track list
Post by: alternativemonkey on October 27, 2005, 06:24:58 PM
I tried to come up with a reasonable track listing for a GNR "Greatest Hits II". This is a formidable task since all the hits are on volume 1. Let's have fun and fill up another disk with a projected song list for this rumored release. I think you have to put some "Live Era" on there to make this marketable. Here is what I would put out.

1. Nightrain
2. Out ta Get Me
3. My Michelle
4. Rocket Queen
5. Knockin on Heavens Door (Days of Thunder Version)
6. Mama Kin
7. Used to Love Her
8. Garden of Eden
9. Dead Horse
10. Coma
11. Pretty Tied Up
12. Estranged
13. Hair of the Dog
14. Welcome to the Jungle (Live)
15. It?s So Easy (Live)

None. But, if Universal is going to put out a "Greatest Hits II", they can't sell you a blank disc and an apology.

This is simply what I would put on a "Greatest Hits II" if I HAD to.

Universal putting the screws to AXl - again!

Well, then they shouldn't release a "Greatest HITS vol 2" then, since they already have released all their hits back in 2004.. Rather call it Best Of.

I don't know.. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have re-released anything of the old material (other than a live DVD)

IMO, these songs would definitely be included:

1 - Rocket Queen
2 - Mr. Brownstone
3 - It's So Easy
4 - Used to Love Her
5 - Civil War
6 - Estranged
7 - Since I Don't Have You
8 - Ain't It Fun

After that, who the hell knows. I would suggest:

8 - Breakdown
9 - Coma
10 - Garden of Eden
11 - Don't Damn Me
12 - Oh My God

It is possible that something interesting could be on there as well, like a studio version of The Blues or Madagascar, something unreleased like Crash Diet, or something live from Live Era.

Whatever. The idea of releasing this now is simply ridiculous.

well this thread really makes me believe that there`s no fuckin way to release a second greatest hits (without bonus tracks or new songs)

if it`s actually a greatest hits then there have to be some unreleased songs on it. i mean even on the first one they had sympathy for the devil on it.....

slightly off topic but I think if GNR chose this tracklist for Illusion release..then wow...

Civil War
14 Yrs
Yesterdays
Dust n Bones
Breakdown
Double Talkin Jive
NR
The Garden
Dont Cry
Locomotive
Garden Of Eden
Dead Horse
You Could Be Mine
Estranged ---greatest song ever recorded
Coma

Would easily be one of the greatest albums of all time. And the main thing critics wouldnt be able to focus on the non popular songs from bnoth albums and the great songs would get its well deserved praise.

AFD and this album would rival any album ever made.

I agree this shouldn't be released, but maybe a themed album, you know really sleazy like Back off Bitch, Bad Obsession, Rocket Queen, Cornchucker, Mr Brownstone, Whole lotta rosie (cover) etc

They could put a live version of "Madagascar." It is already sorta a classic. It could be a hit. I mean, Paul McCartney's live vsersion on "Maybe I'm Amazed" was a hit, not the studio version.

It's So Easy
Nightrain
Mr. Brownstone
Rocket Queen
The Garden
Garden Of Eden
Dead Horse
Coma
14 Years
So Fine
Estranged
Don't Cry (Alt. Lyrics)
New Rose
Hair Of The Dog
Shadow Of Your Love (a track most casual fans don't have, like Sympathy For The Devil)

Now, the big question is, what to put on volumes 3 and 4.....  :hihi:

I wouldn't be surprised to see one new tune on this. I mean, Greatest Hits does a good job of covering the recorded history of GnR in one disc, and I don't know how a second one could be anything but a cheap cash in that really isn't necessary. Think about it, for what you would pay for both Greatest Hits you could have Appetite and one of the Illusions albums and get way more good music for the same price. Hell, a lot of older albums usually end up going for less than what a current cd costs so you might just be able to get Appetite and both Illusions for the same price.

But...

Throw in a new song like Madagascar and you have a means to increase purchase intent. Record companies are sleazy and will bend people over for the cost of entire cd in order for them to get at a new song. If they are going to include any sort of 'teaser' for Chinese Democracy I would bet money on it being one song, most likely something played on the tour (Madagascar, the Blues, Chinese Democracy, or Rhiyad).

I would love to see a few live bonus tracks if possible.. Anyhow for some reason I doubt they would have a second gh's being they already had one.. Two new gh's without one new effort??

I don't really feel like making a list because I already own all these songs.. Definetly some SI in there too and omg to add something newer././
I wouldn't mind a gh with a second b sides type album with the best of the newer songs live to actually hype cd..

think about it...all they have to do is toss on ONE new song and people will buy this fucking thing like crazy.

I own all of the albums but I would still go out and buy it.

however, if they don't add a new song or at least something special...it won't touch the success of GH#1. (simply because while I love most of GNR's "B" songs, people buy greatest hits CDs for the songs they know, not the relatively obscure ones).

Great point, pat. Another hits album will flop. There's already one with their real hits, and obscurity doesn't sell albums. REM is a good example. They did a hits album awhile back, and it was horrible. It had a couple hits and a bunch of obscure shit. It sold poorly. If they had did like GNR with the first hits album, it would have sold pretty good. If GNR hits 2 doesn't have some new stuff, they should just flush it down the toilet.

There's been a thread like this before, but I think a GH's II could actually be a stronger overall record if they did it right.

Reckless Life
ISE
Nightrain
Mr. Brownstone
My Michelle
Rocket Queen
Used to Love Her
You're Crazy
OIAM - if they felt like getting some free pub for the disc
estranged
locomotive
coma
DTJ
Garden of Eden

IMO, that disc is MUCH better overall than GH's I. I assume we would see The Garden & Dead Horse on it though, if it were to happen.

I would certainly hope so. The Garden is a semi-obscure song from Illusions, and it never got the attention/respect that it deserves. They released it as a single/video towards the end of the Illusion era, but nobody in the world cared because the grunge movement was in overdrive. Its a highlight of UYI I, and I think it would have been a huge hit had it been the 2nd single released from Illusions. I have an uncle that isn't even a GNR fan, but he absolutely loves this song.

I like the music & video just fine, but the Alice Cooper part has always ruined it for me. I suppose 'The Garden' is a perfect little snapshot of the UYI's for me. Some really cool ideas somewhat muddied by some not so cool ideas.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The Cooper part isn't my fave either, but I do love the song. Cool lyrics, and has some of the best music from the Illusions albums. In alot of the old reviews of Illusions, there isn't hardly any mention of this song. Its like they just skipped the song while listening. If I had to pick one song for Axl to remake, it would be this one. I would also like to hear an unpolished version of this song. Slash should open up his vault.
