BLS is so fuckin' heavy, they are one of my favourite bands. I like this music much more than Ozzy's latest records. Zakk is the man!

Is the new album better than Alcohol Fuelled Brewtality?  I like that but it drags after the first few songs.  I don't like Zakk's vocals on it either.  Stick to lead Zakk!

the new album "Mafia" is really good, but I can't decide if I like it better than "Blessed Hell Ride" . the song  In This River really cool.

Just got Mafia last night. Black (Sabbath) Label Soceity continues to impress. Where as "Hangover Music...."  was ballad heavy, yet still awesome, in my opinion, "Mafia" is flat out kick ass rock n roll. Zakk continuously puts out the music that I hoped Black Sabbath would when they reunited. I've only listened to Mafia once so far so I dont have any favorite songs yet, although "Dr. Octavia" was an impressive guitar solo that I wouldnt have minded being a bit longer. From beginning to end this is just a solid album closing out on a high note with "Dirt on the Grave". Out of all his projects "Pride & Glory", his solo album and now BLS, this might just be Zakks best release to date.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde recently answered a few questions for Argus Leader, South Dakota's largest newspaper. The question-and-answer session follows:

Q: You and Dimebag Darrell ? the former PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist who was murdered on stage last year ? were very close. Was it tough to pick up your guitar after hearing about his death?

Zakk Wylde: "Yeah. Definitely, for a couple days. I was like, (expletive) this. I talked to him two weeks before it all went down. He got me this guitar, it's like one of his new ones, one of the Razorbacks. The last thing I said to him was, 'I love you so much bro.' He said, 'I love you too.' The way I look at it, he's in God's tavern, and he's keeping the beer cold until we all get there. Because God knows there won't be any Crown left."

Q: Any kind of Dimebag tribute worked into your show?

Zakk Wylde: "Yeah, totally ? 'In This River' every night."

Q: Is there any guitarist you'd be afraid to go up against in a riff battle?

Zakk Wylde: "No. I love all of them. I'm a huge fan of anyone who's (expletive) awesome. Anyone who takes the time out to be great, you've got to love them."

Q: You're a pretty big guy, how much do you bench press?

Zakk Wylde: "Usually ... about 375 pounds. Calf raises, 1,400 pounds. Leg presses, 700-800 pounds."

On what would have happened had he actually joined GUNS N' ROSES in 1995:

Zakk Wylde: "I think it would be what you're hearing now (with GNR offshoot VELVET REVOLVER). The stuff we would have been playing would have been slammin'. Look at VELVET REVOLVER, how awesome that album is."

According to a post at ZakkWylde.com, PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer "Vinnie Paul sat in with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY one more time over the weekend in Dallas, Texas. This was the first time Vinnie has been back behind the drums in front of his hometown crowd since the tragedy. The crowd went absolutely NUTS when he stepped up behind drummer Craig Nunemacher's kit to perform 'Suicide Messiah' with the guys. An extremely long chant of 'Dimebag... Dimebag... Dimebag' went on for nearly five minutes. It was great to see our brother Vinnie smiling as he punded away on the skins. The show was sold out as majority of the tour has been. Prior to this show, Vinnie stepped up with the band in Orlando, Florida and in front of a sold out crowd of 8,000 in Boston. The band was kicking ass and taking names as usual. Some of the songs included 'Fire It Up', 'Spoke In The Wheel', 'In This River', 'Stoned n Drunk', 'Stillborn' and more. The band has just under two weeks left on this leg of the tour before it wraps up in Hollywood, California on May 5."

the new album  is great.  I really enjoy the song "Death March".  I've got most of BLS albums and I do enjoy Zakks vocals.  The one issue with me is the drumming.  His albums have the most boring drumming ive ever heard.   Same tempo, just hi-hat and snare for the most part.  If Zakk just allows the drummer more flexability I think all of the albums would be awesome.

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced the relaunch of its hard rock and heavy metal label Spitfire Records. The relaunch includes new releases from THE DUKE, featuring former STUCK MOJO and FOZZY guitarist Rich Ward, and Georgia-based sleaze-rockers NASHVILLE PUSSY. Additionally, starting May 2, Spitfire will lower prices on its extensive hard rock and heavy metal catalog, which includes TWISTED SISTER, ALICE COOPER, TED NUGENT and DIO.

Originally launched in 1999, Spitfire has a history of nurturing both new and veteran hard rock and heavy metal artists, and is filling up its 2005 release schedule. First up is "My Kung-Fu Is Good" from Rich Ward's THE DUKE on May 3. Featuring Ward's own melodic hooks and instantly recognizable brutal riffage, "My Kung Fu is Good" establishes Ward not only as a guitar hero, but also as a brilliant singer and songwriter. Later this summer, Spitfire will release NASHVILLE PUSSY's long-awaited fourth studio album, "Get Some". Also in the pipeline are a "best of" compilation from BLACK LABEL SOCIETY due this summer, and a new studio album from SEBASTIAN BACH, due in the fourth quarter.

"Spitfire's has a long-standing reputation with the hard rock and heavy metal community. We're excited to be back with strong releases from THE DUKE and NASHVILLE PUSSY, and have more on tap for the rest of 2005," said Eagle Rock Entertainment Executive VP and President of North American Operations Mike Carden. "Our new pricing also offers fans a wallet-friendly price on everything in our catalog, from ALICE COOPER to ZAKK WYLDE." Other Spitfire recordings include CRADLE OF FILTH, OVERKILL, TESTAMENT and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN.

Beginning May 2, Spitfire will reduce prices on most single-disc titles to $13.98, and on double-disc titles to $15.98. Titles priced $13.98 and lower will not be affected. Spitfire will support the re-pricing with advertising in Revolver, Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs and work with Concrete Corner to coordinate visibility in retail locations. The label will also use street team marketing to build awareness and will create a dedicated blog page on MySpace.com to reach out to current and potential street team members.

Eagle Rock Entertainment develops, acquires and produces music programming for a wide range of notable and high profile artists, which the company distributes on a worldwide basis. Eagle Rock Entertainment, Eagle Vision and Eagle Eye Media are wholly owned divisions of Eagle Rock Group, LTD. The company's corporate headquarters are in London, with offices in New York, Paris and Hamburg.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's show at the House of Blues in West Holywood, California Thursday night (May 5) ended early after the group's mainman, Zakk Wylde, reportedly snapped at one of his roadies and hinted from the stage that he had gotten into a fight with his wife prior to the concert. The following report was sent to BLABBERMOUTH.NET from a visitor by the name of Jimmy Pop:

"BLACK LABEL SOCIETY played the Hollywood House Of Blues last night and from the start of the show the band seemed off and Zakk didn't seem into, but I figured it was no big deal. When he finally talked to the crowd before 'In The River' and was going to talk about his Dimebag guitar, he mentioned to the crowd that just before the show he got into a physical fight with his wife and she was throwing punches at him. Then he talked about Dimebag and went into the song and didn't mention anything else about his fight with his wife. He soloed during the song for what seemed like over 10 minutes. Really, really long and self-indulgent. At just under 60 minutes, Zakk took off his Bullseye guitar from center stage after they played 'Suicide Messiah' and threw it at the monitor board/monitor man and started bitching about the monitors being fucked up and that he'd 'lay the hand of God down on somebody in a New York minute' if it wasn't fixed. Then he told the soundman that he couldn't hear shit all night and he just wanted to go home to his wife and kids and to get it all over with. He then refused to take another guitar from his tech and walked back and forth onstage as the band started jamming. He looked like he was going to start fighting people. He kneeled down on the side of the stage for a while, and then walked off. The band was still playing during this time and he finally came back on. He strapped on his orange Buzzsaw guitar, but then threw his beer cup at somebody behind the monitors. It looked like he threw it at a woman but I could be wrong.

"Anyway, he then turned around, took off his guitar, and threw it deep into the crowd and walked off. The drummer then kicked over his drums and the show was over. The whole tantrum thing lasted about 5 minutes and the band barely played 60 minutes.

"On the way out, I heard some roadies tell the doormen to make sure the guitar doesn't leave the building, and somebody else also said Zakk was headed to rehab tomorrow. This might also have to do with the story you put up a few days ago about Zakk destroying a bar with a baseball bat. He definitely has some anger-management issues and seemed a bit drunk onstage tonight. I've seen BLS many times before and tonight was the worst, and quite a letdown."

Am I the only person who thinks that "Malcolm" is the most obvious plant in the history of rabble-rousing? Someone who states in their first post that Mafia is the first BLS album they've heard and then proceeds to answer all of your questions on the band?! And makes post after post with interviews and pics?

BLS and Zakk are great, and they don't need hokey fake-ass cheerleaders like Malcolm to gather up support.

Malcolm; Are you getting a percentage on sales? Or do you run a BLS website or something? Full disclosure, wench!

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde recently spoke to ChartAttack.com about his songwriting approach and the group's latest album, "Mafia", available now on Artemis Records. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

On his recording approach:

"Making music shouldn't be like a dentist visit. I don't know why the hell it takes [some bands] eight months to make a record. If you're in the studio that long, you start second-guessing everything. Lay it down and move on.

"With this album ['Mafia'] we didn't have anything. We just walked into the studio ready to go. Eight days later I wrote 23 songs and we recorded the music. Then when it came time for the lyrics, I told the guys to go watch 'Seinfeld' and have some beers while I record the damned thing. It's like that with my guitar solos too. People think because I'm a guitar player, I just wanna wail away, but that's not the case. Guitar solos are icing on the cake, but you gotta have a cake, man."

On his past recorded outut:

"I'm proud of every one of my songs. Each album is a snapshot in time. That was the best job I could do at that time. Listen to LED ZEPPELIN. Jimmy Page's favourite album was 'Presence', their least-selling album. It depends on your mood. Like drinkin' beer. 'What's your favourite beer?' Hell, any of ?em as long as it's not non-alcoholic!"

On the band's live shows:

"When you're thinkin', you're stinkin'. I realized that if we do our albums in this loose vibe, the show should have it too. You gotta just get out there and do it. The joy of improvisation is the thrill of what's going to happen. If you want to see a live band, see what may happen. Otherwise stay home and listen to the record. But when it works for us, it's fuckin' brutal! Playing with great musicians, you don't hear each other, you feel each other. That's what it should always be when you're listening to great music: you just feel it."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY were reportedly forced to cancel their scheduled gig in Manchester, England Saturday night (June 18) after a local biker club, Sons of Hell, allegedly complained that the group's back design is too similar to their own. A BLABBERMOUTH.NET reader, Will from Manchester, wrote, "They [Sons of Hell] were telling people to cover up, take off, or turn inside out their BLACK LABEL shirts, and anybody with a band shirt on that was black and white. They then continued to beat people up who didn't, ripping shirts off. I saw at least three ambulances. It's really bad, I was looking forward to [the gig]. It was all a logo issue apparently. They had an issue with the BLACK LABEL logo being similar to theirs, and in their colours." Another BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitor who went to the venue wrote, "They threatened event staff and fans. The gig was cancelled for safety of all involved."

Metal Edge magazine recently conducted an interview with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Metal Edge: What the hell happened at the L.A. show the other night

Zakk Wylde: "Oh my God, what a night of berserken comedy that night was! We were up there for about an hour and a half, we were jamming, we did 'In This River', then we got to 'Suicide Messiah', and the monitors were feeding back on me the whole night, I couldn't hear a goddamned thing. I go, 'What the fuck?' It was the last show of this run, everyone was dead, beat up and tired, and we just wanted to be home for a few days before going to Japan. Of course, it had to be in El Gay, where all the chaos breaks out! We did 41 shows in eight weeks, and they all went without a hitch?"

Metal Edge: Without a hitch? You wouldn't call Boise, Idaho a hitch

Zakk Wylde: "Boise? You know what happened? We walked into the club and grabbed a few bar stools ? plain wooden stools ? and we started blasting them to seee who could reach the stage with them. We could have gone to Ikea and we could've bought these chairs, they're nothing fancy, and were blastin' them with an aluminum bat. So the owner comes in and starts on me ? 'What the hell are you doin'' And I'm like, 'Don't worry, I'll pay all the damages? I'm Zakk, dude, we're doing a show here, everything's cool, I'll give you the money right now?' Mind you, he's going to make a lot of money off me that night, right? BLACK LABEL likes to drink, he'll make his money. And he starts going off on me. So I go, 'Dude, you're the owner of the bar, you've got to deal with a lot of stress. Here, this one's on me, blow off some stress, whap one of the chairs.' Don't forget who's holding the bat now, right? [laughing] So he goes, 'Fuck this, I'm calling the cops?' And he calls the cops. So he's got three display cases hanging on the wall with guitars and basses in them, and I smashed all three of them on the way out of the club, the glass shatters, and the guitars fall out of all three of 'em. Next thing you know, there are nine cops, and a cop on horseback! [laughing] You couldn't make this shit up! So he comes out there, and I'm all pissed and irate that I might be goin' to jail for bustin' up three fucking bar stools, and I'm going, 'I've got ten acres and a wood chipper, and I make shit disappear!' [laughing] So the cops are standing there going, 'Come on, dig yourself deeper?' So I'm explaining to the cops that I offered to pay right up front, and even offered to let him take a few swings, and that he was just being a douche bag? Anyway, he drops the charges, but pulls the show, even though I was still willing to play. Then he says that I did $60,000 in damages, and wanted me to come back and play a free show for him? Fuck you, motherfucker!"

Metal Edge: You just cleared up the Boise hitch. Now you've got to get back to the Hollywood hitch?

Zakk Wylde: "Dude, you want to talk about all the chaos all the time? [laughing] That House of Blues show was the last show, so we figured the show will go smooth, we'll get through it, go home, recharge the batteries, then off to Japan? Nah, it can't go smooth! [laughing] It's like a tidal wave and tornado came onstage, shit starts burning, it was hysterical. The fucking gay-ity level was frothing and foaming ? it was like pasta boiling over a pot, unbelievable! I launched a guitar, then threw another one into the audience. Craig threw his fucking drums off the riser, pulled a Keith Moon, and James threw a bass cabinet? I think that's the end of the show! [laughing] People were like, 'Did you walk offstage?' No, we didn't 'walk offstage,' we just ended the show! It was un-fucking-believably gay ? it was one for the books, mass chaos. So the next day, I'm like, 'Who else do I have to apologize to?' This is a rock band, this isn't 'Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood'! [laughing] We laugh about it, because BLACK LABEL comedy does get misconstrued as horror, you know what I mean? It's not like we're hurting anybody here! If you've got to be out here doing it, I don't want to be miserable. Let's have a good time, whoop it up, and have something to remember when we go home."

Zakk Wylde's entire interview with Metal Edge is available in the magazine's September 2005 issue, out on the stands now.

Zakk's a crazy motherfucker.  I saw BLS at ozzfest a couple days back.  He's larger than life when performing on stage.  Its like he's not even human.  Its like he's some super crazy drunken viking from the past who somehow knows how to play some amazing guitar.

That Metal Edge interview about the Boise skirmish is something else. I mean i know alot of people on here like the guy but there is no reason for shit like that. Walks into this bar and just starts destroying the place. Who does he think he is. I used to be a huge fan of the guy but shit like that is why i cant stomach the guy anymore. No disrepect Rob i know your a fan. I like the line " I am Zakk dude , where doing a show here". the he starts destroying the guys bar. No wonder he called the cops. The disrespectful shit like that is why i can't fathom the guy.

Yeah, I hear ya, delivethecow.  I think he's an amazing guitarist and performer, but he does some shit that makes you scratch your head.  I honestly think he's a good guy with a good heart.  He just drinks way too much, and that leads to his erratic behavior.  I hope he can get clean soon.  He's been a wild dude for a long time now...since before he started up with Ozzy in the late 80's.  Its probably time for him to tone it down a bit.

Yeah, he played in some local Jersey band before Ozzy.  His old band actually did a 10 Questions with Metal Sludge not too long ago.  They had some interesting Zakk stories to tell.  I can't remember their name right now.  It was something like "Jester" I think.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde has told MTV.com that he's got two projects in the works he needs to finish once the band's current touring commitments are over. The first is a DVD with live footage from several recent shows BLACK LABEL SOCIETY played over in Paris and London; that, he said, could see release early next year. There's also a compilation CD that should be out around the same time, featuring all of the earliest BLS material as well as some bonus tracks, to be called "Kings of Damnation".

When asked what he thinks of WICKED WISDOM, the band fronted by Will Smith's Holywood actress wife Jada Pinkett Smith, Wylde replied, "What's that?" After being told that it's the Jada Pinkett Smith-fronted group that takes the stage at Ozzfest long before he rolls out of bed, he asks, "What does Jada Pinkett Smith do?" When he finds out she's married to Will Smith, who's also been attending all of the Ozzfest dates, he perks up. "F---ing Will Smith's been on the Ozzfest? What the hell? I need to get an autograph, dude. 'I loved you in 'Ali', bro.' "

Glam Metal writer Deb Rao recently spoke to BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist Nick Catanese about the group's upcoming headlining tour and Ozzfest, among other topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On how the Ozzfest tour is going:

"All the shows are cool in one way or another. The fans are amazing with us. There is much support and love. All of the BLACK LABEL SOCIETY berserkers in the crowd jamming with us."

On seeing IRON MAIDEN perform:

"It's sick seeing them. They are metal icons. I am looking forward to seeing VELVET REVOLVER ? seeing Slash, Duff and the boys. It's gonna be a great time."

On how Dimebag was instrumental in getting Nick his Washburn guitar endorsement:

"Well, Dime had put some good words in for me which I can never repay him. He was such a genuine guy and friend. I love my signature ET guitars but the guitar that is the closest to my heart is the black and red confederate that Washburn made specially for Dime. It is a one of one. They only made it for him. He loved it, but he went to Dean, so after he passed, I donated my ET guitar that I use in the 'Suicide Messiah' video to the Dime fund and they gave the confederate to me. It's amazing that if Dime was here he would have it, but I think he is happy and smiling up from above knowing that a BLACK LABEL brother is still playing it and paying respect. Dime loved us like brothers, he loved BLACK LABEL so much they even laid him to rest in his BLACK LABEL vest."

On whether Vinnie Paul will join BLACK LABEL SOCIETY on stage at Ozzfest in Texas (Paul had previously jammed with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY at the 2005 WAAF Indoor Beach Party in April in Lowell, MA):

"[The WAAF Beach Party] was a very special show for us, and it was great seeing Vinnie jam with us. I don't know if he will in Texas, but that memory is forever with me."

On BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's upcoming U.S. headlining tour:

"We are gonna take a much needed rest after Ozzfest, recharge then come out in October ready to smash heads. It's gonna be a great tour. The fans can expect what they always get ? a fucking great time, and a lot of crushing fucking music."

According to MTV.com, a representative at Zakk Wylde's management has rejected speculation that Ozzy Osbourne's working relationship with the guitarist has come to an end in the wake of Osbourne's announcement that he is looking for a guitarist to work with on his next studio effort. A posting on the Ozzy's web site is calling for "all interested parties" to send demos "showcasing their guitar skills" to a Beverly Hills, California, post-office box, but a spokesperson for Osbourne wouldn't reveal whether Ozzy's in need of a lead or rhythm guitarist, according to MTV.com. Stated Wylde's management: "Zakk will play with Ozzy until they are both in the grave."

To be honest, I couldn't care less if Zakk never played with Ozzy again,
Ozzy has been making pretty crappy albums lately and BLS is still getting
better and better (even tho I prefer STD over Mafia).
And that (un)reality show hasn't made my view on Ozzy any better.

Former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul recently commented on BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's "In This River" video. The moving tribute to the guitar legend "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who would have celebrated his 39th birthday on Saturday, August 20, was directed by Eric Zimmerman and is the new single from BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's Artemis Records debut, "Mafia". Frontman Zakk Wylde, primarily known for his stunning guitar prowess, is featured in a rare appearance at the piano.

Commented Vinnie Paul in an Artemis press release: "I'm really glad Zakk dedicated his latest video to the memory of Dime. I remember the night Zakk played it for me on his bus. It's very hard when you lose a best friend, mentor, idol, companion or brother like Dime, and this video captures the emotion and pain that we all feel. As Dime always said, 'It's the highs and lows of rock and roll and you gotta keep on keepin' on.' Great job, Zakk!"

When has Bruce talked shit about America?  All he said was American audiences aren't quite as good as audiences in other countries.  He's 100% right about that.  South and Central American crowds, and many European crowds put many US crowds to shame when it comes to enthusiasm and the sheer number of people who show up at shows.  Its fact, Bruce was just stating facts.

On Track Magizine recently conducted an exclusive interview with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On Track Magazine: In light of your success with BLACK LABEL, recently there was an announcement made that Ozzy is seeking a new guitar player to work on his next solo effort. He also stated that he knows you would be on board for anything that he does but he didn't want to pull you away from BLACK LABEL. What are your feelings on this?

Zakk: "Ozzy knows I'll always be there for him. What comes around goes around, 'cause I remember Ozzy, awhile ago when he was lookin' for a guitar player, he goes, 'Zakk, it's a nightmare.' When I first arrived on the scene I was comin' in at the end of the '80s and guitar players were a lot better, then the solos kinda went, but what's old is new again and what's new is old. I've just always figured that you just gotta know how to play your goddamned instrument, you know what I mean? As far as today goes there's a lot of potential within the rest of the BLACK LABEL chapters. There's a whole bunch of kids, and they're all like seventeen years old, eighteen years old, and they all play, like, ten hours a day and you love jammin' again, you know what I mean? When I got the job with Ozzy, there were actually some decent guitar players around, I just happened to fall through the cracks."

On Track Magazine: So are you gonna pursue writing with him and recording with him again?

Zakk: "Um, yeah, I mean the bottom line is, with Oz, he makes the calls, he's the boss, you know what I mean? Whenever he tells me to jump, I ask, 'How high?' With us it's real easy, Sharon [Osbourne] calls Barbara Ann, my wife, and goes, 'Tell the idiot to be down at rehearsals on Wednesday.' 'What time?' 'Tell him to be there at 1 o'clock.'"

On Track Magazine: I know that [Dimebag's] death has had a massive impact on anyone and everyone who knew who he was, but when I first heard the news of what happened, I was beyond shock. I immediately thought of you because that night in L.A. was the last memory I'd had of him there with you. Man, I just kinda stood back and I saw the love between you guys and it was something really heartfelt and it really did a number on me.

Zakk: "Without a doubt, man. It's like, 'In This River' video just came out the other night and every night when I play the song on stage, I gotta try not to cry every time I do it. No, it's crazy, the cop that actually ended up takin' that guy out came on the bus, really super cool guy, young kid too, man. He was the first one on the call to get there, they said there was a shooting goin' on in the club and he was the first one closest to it so he pulled in, just grabbed his 12-gauge and came into the club. He went behind the amps and he saw that dude shootin' and wavin' the gun at the crowd, re-loadin' his gun and then he was gonna shoot?., he had Kat [PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drum tech John 'Kat' Brooks] around the neck and he put the gun up near Kat's head and it was like one of those, 'Well you're either shootin' or you ain't,' and that's why he shot him. And then he went over to see if the dude was still down, he was done, and Kat climbed back up on the stage and took off, 'cause they both fell off the stage. But he just said, 'Yeah, it was f*cked up.' 'Cause he ran into the guy's mother ? the guy who murdered Dime ? he ran into the mother and the mother apologized and said, 'I don't know what happened. We didn't raise our son to be like that.' 'Cause its f*cked up for every family involved, you know what I mean? It'd be like you tellin' me, 'I can't believe my son murdered two people. Where did I go wrong?' As a parent, that's something you don't get over and then you gotta feel bad for the other family 'cause they lost one of their children. So it's just bad news all around."

As BLABBERMOUTH.NET exclusively reported on Sept. 17, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY have now officially confirmed the departure of bassist James Lomenzo. "The decision to part ways with James Lomenzo was a mutual one between James and [BLACK LABEL SOCETY mainman] Zakk [Wylde]," the band write in a press release.

"John 'JD' DeServio will be playing bass on the BLACK LABEL SOCIETY 'Mafia' post-Ozzfest tour. Most of you will remember J.D. from the early BLACK LABEL SOCIETY days, and we're excited to have him back rockin the low end once again.

"Zakk has always said that the bass position is like 'Mount Bassmore' and Zakk enjoys playing with many different bassists."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde recently spoke to Ron Wynn of the Nashville City Paper about the group's benefit show tonight (October 11) at the recently opened City Hall venue in Nashville, TN. All profits will be donated to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Alternative rock station WBUZ/Nashville is a partner in the event and is offering tickets on air. Tickets are currently on sale at all Ticketmaster locations and online at Ticketmaster.com.

"We know so many people and have extensive connections to families and friends in Louisiana and Mississippi, so this is the least we can do," Wylde said. "People should also know that absolutely every penny that we raise at this event is going directly to the people and families that have been so greatly affected."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's latest CD, "Mafia", has already gotten substantial exposure and attention, with the third single, "In This River", recently being shipped to rock radio. It?s a dashing, though also poignant, tribute to Wylde's departed friend, PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

"One thing that we?re really trying to do now, whether in the studio or in concert, is keep things as fresh and spontaneous as possible," Wylde said. "We really didn?t do a lot of rehearsal prior to recording 'Mafia', because I didn?t want to drain all the life out of them. That's one complaint I've had periodically with Ozzy. I like to get out there and see what's going to happen with the music, let it develop and not just be out there doing it the same way all the time.

"With BLACK LABEL SOCIETY we're going to have fun, and we're going to try and make our shows as fresh and spontaneous as possible."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY recently parted ways with bassist James Lomenzo. Replacing him on the group's upcoming dates will be John "JD" DeServio, who had previously played with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY during the band's early days.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY will be embarking on a U.S. tour with BRAND NEW SIN beginning on October 14 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The band's latest album, "Mafia", has sold 175,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Deb Rao of Glam-Metal.com recently conducted an interview with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Glam-Metal.com: Last time we spoke, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY were ripping the roof off arenas at Ozzfest this summer. Tell me how is the fall "Mafia" touring going so far?

Zakk Wylde: "We are having an ass-kicking good time! It's BLACK LABEL, ya know?! The gayness never never stops. KISS puts the 'X' in sex, BLACK LABEL puts gay into gayness. We have been raising hell, boozing it up and just having a a great time seeing all of our family members. We were just in North Carolina, South Carolina, Philly the other day. Now we are hanging out with the Boston chapter. This show is gonna rule!

Glam-Metal.com: Now the tour kicked off in Nashville, with a benefit concert for the Hurricane Katrina victims, right?

Zakk Wylde: "Yeah, ya know, a lot of guys in the band, Craig, our drummer, is from Louisiana. He's got lots of family down in Louisiana. Dewey, who takes care of him, is from Mississippi. He's got family out there. We got family out in Alabama. BLACK LABEL is worldwide. Everybody is scattered all over the country. You just do the right thing. Bottom line. We did the show in Tennessee, and all of the money went to the Red Cross."

Glam-Metal.com: Zakk, let's talk about the writing process for "Mafia". Do you write the lyrics first or the guitar riffs?

Zakk Wylde: "It is always the riff. That is the way I always love doing it best. I go into the stuio with nothing. When we did 'Mafia', I went into the studio with nothing, and eight days later, I had 23 songs. Bottom line is, this kinda sounds like ZEPPELIN, this kinda sounds like SABBATH, ELTON JOHN. It is just like there is no shortage of grat songs. With ZEPPELIN or SABBATH it is safe to say, it ain't gonna suck. We just have a good time when we go into the studio. We get loaded and tanked. We start jamming and having fun. This song came out really cool, and sometimes you say, this song really sucked. It is just like you can take a million different pictures. Like the famous picture of Jim Morrison. They probaly took a million pictures that day to get that one picture. It was a classic shot. For me, I don't understand how one band can be in the studio for six months working on one record. After a while, it is like Axl Rose and what he is doing with GUNS N' ROSES. It is like, just put the record out. If it bombs, it bombs. With VELVET REVOLVER, the guys go in, knock the thing out, if it succeeds, great, if it doesn't, what are you gonna do? Sit on it for ten years?! Everything I did with Ozzy, you are looking at 1991, when the record came out. If I didnt have an album come out since 1991 and now it is 2005, like 'Mama I'm Coming Home'. It is awesome songs, To me it is old, 'cause you always want to put out the new thing."

Glam-Metal.com: You really outdid yourself on "Mafia". The writing is simply brillant. The guitar work is amazing, let me tell ya.

Zakk Wylde: "Thank you, Deb. Even Ozzy said, 'Zakk, we just went into the studio and did eight or ten songs. We didn't have time to sit around. We went into the studio, knock out the record, and went back on the road.' Otherwise you are just gonna look at what you wrote. You can always second-guess the thing. One day I was sitting at a bar in Los Angeles with my wife and a buddy. I was reading for 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. And this gay guy comes up to me, I kid you not, and says, 'Ya know, you are gorgeous!' I thought he was talking to my wife, and he said, 'No, you, man.' I said, 'I appreciate it it, man,' and my buddy goes, 'That is his wife over there,' and he said, 'I don't care.' KISS puts the 'X' in sex, BLACK LABEL puts the gay in gay."

Glam-Metal.com: What a great story! Now BLACK LABEL SOCIETY just put out "Kings of Damnation". How has BLACK LABEL SOCIETY changed since the early PRIDE & GLORY days?

Zakk Wylde: "Our last record company, Spitfire, contractually we had to put out another record. To me, it is not a greatest-hits album. We don't have a greatest-hits album. Bottom line is, it is a complilation. We put out seven records since 1998. After we get done with the tour, we will go home for the holidays so we can be with our families. It is all about the bambinos. Then we might go into the studio and lay down another album, so we have it in the can or just keep touring. I think BLACK LABEL SOCIETY should stay on the road, and keep touring while the album is hot."

Glam-Metal.com: What about the DVD?

Zakk Wylde: "Yeah, we ended up doing the one in Europe ? the BLACK LABEL European invasion. There is some funny crap on this one. That tour almost damn near killed everybody. Between the tour, the tour bus smelled like crap and piss 24/7. It is like the gayness of comedy. We got it all on film. Some of the shows are slammin', some of the shows we didn't have any electricity. Unbelievable. The gayness and the comedy, we got that all on film. We got to rummage through that now, put it together, it will probaly be out in a couple of months."

Deb Rao's entire interview with Zakk Wylde will be posted at Glam-Metal.com soon.

Black Label Society
Avalon -Boston MA
Oct 25, 2005
BY Deb Rao

Black Label Society, who have just wrapped up a three month summer tour playing on the main stage at Ozzfest this year, are currently hitting the road again for a 27 city tour in support of their current release, "MAFIA." The trek will take the band from Boston to California.

Black Label Society continues on their path of destruction, bringing their full metal assault to venues across the country.  I caught up with them as they performed to a sold out crowd of ?Boston Chapter BLS Berserkers? at Avalon in the historic Fenway Park area. While in New England, the band will play three very special Halloween shows that include stops at Hampton Beach Casino October 29, Lupos in Providence October 30, and spend Halloween at The Hipprodrome in Springfield, MA. Trick or Treat Indeed!

Also on the bill is Brand New Sin, who hail from Syracuse, NY. I spoke with Zakk Wylde early Tuesday, and he told me to check these guys out, cuz they really rock. Well, Zakk was right. Brand New Sin features Joel Altier on vocals, Ken Dunham on guitar, Kris Wiechmann on guitar, bass player Chuck Kahl and drummer Mike Rafferty.
The band performed alot of new songs from their latest album, "Recipe For Disaster." I talked to lead singer Joel Altier after the show and this is what he had to say, "Brand New Sin are rock and roll.  We don't want to sound like anybody else. The tour has been going great for us."  I think the best way to describe the band is Motorhead meets Judas Priest with a very modern sound. Highlights of the set included the bands new single, "Days Are Numbered", and "Freight Train."

Next up, the moment we were all waiting for, Black Label Society invades Boston! As Patsy Cline?s "Crazy? blared through the speakers, followed by show tunes, "Speak Softly To Me" from the Godfather, and the theme from ?Rocky,? BLS hit the stage with a vengeance. As they cranked out "Fire It Up", fans chanted their name so loud, I think you could hear them all the way down on Landsdown St. in Boston. The male dominated crowd was pumped up and ready to rock with their pied piper, Zakk Wylde, as he lead the crowd into a frenzy with his mind-boggling, powerful guitar onslaught.

Zakk was in great spirits, often joking with the audience, and telling funny stories about the songs. An unscripted moment occurred when Zakk's guitar strap suddenly broke. Zakk yells, "Shit happens motherfuckers!" That was too funny. Needless to say, Dimebag's ex-guitar tech Moby was on hand to put Zakk back together, and the band continued to rock.

One of the most memorable moments was the 20-minute tribute that Zakk and the boys paid to Dimebag Darrell Abbott. The fans chanted ?Dimebag? as Zakk took to the piano for very moving version of "In This River? against a sea of bic lighters. Zakk performed the song with so much emotion; you could feel Dime's presence in the room. Zakk yelled to the crowd, "Well Dime is up in God's tavern right now. Ya know that there is not going to be any Crown Royal left for us when we get there cuz Dime will drink all the God Damn Crown Royal for us!"
Earlier that day, Zakk told me, "Dime was the brother I never had.? The moment was simply PRICELESS! Next up, the sing-a-long with the audience, as Zakk also performed "Spoke In The Wheel" on piano, and invited members of the audience up on stage to participate, which was really cool. The man has so much talent, and it was great to see him perform acoustically.

BLS is known for their skull-crushing guitar solos. Nick Catanese, who hails from Pittsburgh, is the 2nd guitar virtuoso in the band. Nick has a guitar style that totally compliments Wylde and it?s amazing to watch the two trade off solos during the set. The guitar combo surely turned up the heat, as their sizzling guitar riffs turned Avalon into a frenzied mosh pit. The BLS rhythm section consisting of drummer Craig Nunemacher, and the return of bass player John "JD" Deservio, who recently replaced James Lomenzo, held down the heavy BLS beat, cranking out some heavy bass lines, and pounding drum rhythms.

The show was full of diversity.  Including an extended guitar jam and tribute to Led Zeppelin, and fan favorites ?Stillborn? and ?Suicide Messiah.?

"BOW DOWN YOU CHOOSE YOUR MAKER. HE NEVER GIVES, HE IS ALWAYS A TAKER. THE ELECTRIC BURNS THAT FUEL THE FIRE. IT'S JUST YOUR SUICIDE MESSIAH.?

I saw BLS about a week ago.  It was a good show, but not great.  Too much jamming for me.  They didn't really play that many songs.  Zakk goes off on these really long, drawn out solos.  It really kills the momentum.  I wouldn't mind 1 or 2 jams, but they did like 5 or 6 of them.  It started to bore me after a while.

GlamMetal.com writer Deb Rao recently conducted an interview with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist Nick Catanese. A couple of excerpts from the question-and-answer session follow:

Glam-Metal.com: How does it feel to be playing with [bassist] JD [John 'JD' DeServio] again? BLACK LABEL SOCIETY have worked with so many great bass guitarists in the past. He is very energetic performer, and fits in well with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY.

Nick Catanese: "It's awesome having JD back. It's like we did a 360 and he is back again. He is a wonderful person and a great bass player. I have been honored to have played with the best bassist on the planet."

Glam-Metal.com: What was it like working with VELVET REVOLVER on the Ozzfest Tour this year? Any funny Ozzfest stories?

Nick Catanese: "I love VELVET REVOLVER. They are great guys and truly a great rock band. It's so refreshing to see that."

Glam-Metal.com: This was my first year attending Ozzfest this summer? What was the highlight of playing Ozzfest this year?

Nick Catanese: "Probably getting to play Ozzfest as many times as we have. As a musician, I have gotten to play on tour with basically every band I have looked up to when I was a kid ? JUDAS PRIEST, BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, PANTERA and even the newer bands, GODSMACK, SHADOWS FALL? It's been a great ride."

Glam-Metal.com: Nick, I know that "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was your best friend and one of your main guitar influences. What was one of the most amazing guitar advice that Dimebag taught you as a performer that you will always remember and practice onstage every night at your show?

Nick Catanese: "He taught me to always appreciate what you got. That's why he always would sign autographs and meet fans after or before the show. He would never say no, because without your fans you are nothing. And what he taught me as a player? The most memorable moment for me was when Dime and [longtime girlfriend] Rita came to see us play with PRIEST in Texas, Dime was watching us play and afterwards he grabs me around the shoulders and says, 'Hey, Twin. How old are you?' I said '33.' He said, 'Man, watching you up there jammin' with Zakk, you got fire and don't ever stop.' And those words meant the world to me."

Glam-Metal.com: Nick, how did you get started in music? Did you start playing guitar at a early age? Were your parents supportive, and do they come see you perform with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY?

Nick Catanese: "I started playing when i was 13. My folks always supported me ? to this day they do. My dad helps out all the time. My mom does all of my financial work. It's amazing to have that. You gotta have that ? support is everything. When they come and see a show, they love it. They love walking around meeting people. I got a great picture of Rob Zombie and my dad. That's priceless to me."

Aaron Beck of The Columbus Dispatch recently conducted an interview with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On his children:

"My daughter, Ray Ray (Hayle Ray), is 13. (My) drinkin' problem is definitely escalating.

"There's Jesse. Ozzy's the godfather of him. That was a good day in Church.

"And (New York Mets catcher) Mike Piazza is godfather of Hendrix Halen Michael Rhoads Wylde. With a name like that, it has to work out, right?

"But I know he?s going to be into basket-weaving and crochet or ballet, or he's going to be a Chippendale's dancer. I can see it comin'.

"The only thing I can do as a father is facilitate."

On his first guitar:

"I was 8, but I wanted to play football and hang out? My guitar teacher said: 'Let him be a kid right now. If he wants to play, he'll play.? It's the same thing with my kids. Just 'cause I play, I can't force them."

On his serious turn toward the guitar:

"I was at my football coach?s house, saying 'I don?t know if I want to play ball right now,' and they were trying to talk me into it. There was a Les Paul in the room. The coach, he could play some country, but in walks his kid. He was the first dude I ever saw with long hair, and he's got on a Harley hat and has a beer in his hand. He starts whipping out 'Eruption' and 'Crazy Train'. I just go, 'This is what I wanted to do with my life.' I took lessons from the kid, Leroy, for two years."

On guitar solos:

"I always loved Randy [Rhoads] and Eddie [Van Halen]. You always want to stick some shredding solos in there. But I love songs. I love ELTON JOHN. I love the new COLDPLAY record. The song is the cake. The solos are the icing."

On his first concert:

" SABBATH 'Mob Rules' tour in the Philadelphia Spectrum. First arena I ever played was the Spectrum, and, I'm 19, like, 'Holy shit, I'm onstage with the old man, the boss (Osbourne)."

On BLACK LABEL SOCIETY:

"You know, after World War II, fighter pilots formed the Hell's Angels. It's just keeping in touch with the guys, your true friends, your brothers. It's weekend-warrior type stuff."

On "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

"He was proof that God exists. All he did was want to make people feel great. He really had a presence. With Dime, you were either laughing or crying. It's time to start laughing again."

The band have released the following statement regarding the matter:

"Due to contractual obligations with the new BLACK LABEL SOCIETY live DVD coming out soon, we were unable to record and release the shows in California last week."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY bassist John "JD" Deservio will be attending the 2006 Winter NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California on Saturday January 21.

In a recent interview with Boston writer Deb Rao, DeServio spoke about NAMM, Zakk Wylde's induction into Hollywood's RockWalk on January 17, and future BLACK LABEL SOCIETY touring plans:

Q: In 2005, you re-joined BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. How does it feel to be back with BLS? You did an excellent job on the fall Mafia tour, by the way.

JD: "It's great to be back in BLACK LABEL SOCIETY; it's definitely home. The fall tour was jammin', for sure.

Q: Do you have any musical predictions for 2006? Do you see a trend going returning back to old-school metal?

JD: "I think the kids today are starting to go back and check the masters that came before them. There were so many great guitar heroes years ago. I always kid Zakk, he's the last one left!! He wins by default!!"

Q: How did you meet Zakk Wylde? Did you meet him in New Jersey? Jersey is like the melting pot for all great musicians. In a recent interview that I conducted with Zakk Wylde, I asked him why there is so many great Jersey musicians? Zakk replied, "There must be something in the water."

JD: "We met in a club back in Jersey when we were kids. Music's always been our common bond. I heard this dude rippin' some shit and I was like, 'Damn, this dude's burning!!' We jammed in the basement of the place and been brothers ever since."

Q: Now Zakk Wylde recently got inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk on January 17. I am so happy for him. He is truly one of rock's greatest guitarists. Are you excited for him?

JD: "The Hollywood's RockWalk induction was awesome!!!! So proud of my buddy."

Q: Will BLACK LABEL SOCIETY release a new album this year?

JD: "Right now we're in the studio recording the next record."

Q: BLS had such an active touring schedule last year. Are their any future BLS touring plans in the works? Will BLACK LABEL SOCIETY perform at Ozzfest this summer?

Q: During the past fall Mafia tour, BLS performed a special tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott during "In This River". Did you know Dime?

JD: "Unfortunately, I only met Dime once in '93. I talked to him on the phone with Zakk a couple of times. He was one of a kind."

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY booking agent Troy Blakely at APA has told Billboard magazine that the band will be taking part in this summer's Ozzfest before doing additional North American dates in the fall. "We don't know how we're going to do it yet or who we're going to be out with, but that's the plan, we're going to be back here in the fall headlining," he said.

This year BLACK LABEL SOCIETY will tour overseas for most of the spring and early summer. The band is booked in Europe by Nigel Kerr at APS and in South America by Bill Monot at Paradise Artists.

"For the first time this year, we're going to South America, for 16 headlining shows in 3,000-capacity-plus [venues]," BLACK LABEL SOCIETY manager Bob Ringe told Billboard. "We're going to Australia for the first time this year ? eight shows in May, 3,000-capacity-plus. And we're doing a headlining European tour from May 23 until the first of July."

Blakely calls BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde "one of the hardest workers I've ever seen in the music business, period, and I've been doing this about 32 years."

Wylde's work ethic impressed Blakely early on. "He's working 24 hours a day, not just when he's onstage," Blakely said. "He's either writing material for himself or for OZZY OSBOURNE, working on other projects he's involved with, designing guitars or whatever else he's doing."

On the road, Wylde and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY are rock-solid at the box office. "we did two tours in 2005," Ringe noted. "The spring tour we did 97.6% capacity, and the fall tour we headlined 3,000-plus seaters."

According to Blakely, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's fan base is very loyal. "That's one of the things I noticed a couple of years ago when I had JUDAS PRIEST on Ozzfest," he said. "I saw this fan base that Zakk has. There are chapters in each city that are very, very loyal fans, that come out for Zakk and bring other people and spread the word about what Zakk and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY are up to. I've never seen anything quite like that before."

Yeah it's him. Mafia is a damn good album. He sings, records both lead and rythem guitar and some bass. Only thing he doesn't play are the drums.

The new album was suppose to be issued in June.. But it seems BLS and their current label are no more.. So Zakk is pretty much a free agent. So the CD and DVD might be delayed.. might not. The DVD was suppose to be released in April.

If you really want to know the guys range in music.. Pick of Book Of Shadows and Pride & Glory. Totally different sound than BLS. BoS is an acoustic based album which is amazing. The P&G album is southern rockish to a point but so much more..

I've got the first DVD - Boozed, Bruised and Broken Boned which is awesome, but I wish Zakk would play some older tunes from Pride & Glory or Book Of Shadows, those are great too. Toe'n The Line is a kickass song, would love to hear BLS play that.

OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARCH 20, 2006

ZAKK WYLDE'S BLACK LABEL SOCIETY SIGNS TO ROADRUNNER RECORDS

SUMMER ACTIVITIES INCLUDES THE RELEASE OF SHOT TO HELL AND SECOND STAGE OZZFEST HEADLINING SLOT

New York, NY ? Roadrunner Records is proud to announce the signing of legendary guitarist Zakk Wylde and his band, Black Label Society. Having sold over 1.4 million albums worldwide BLS is currently working with producer Michael Beinhorn (Soundgarden, Ozzy Osbourne, Red Hot Chili Peppers) on Shot To Hell, the first release for Roadrunner that will be released this summer. "After spending a lifetime as Wylde Z. Coyote, I guess it was just a matter of time before I'd catch the Roadrunner, " comments Wylde. Shot To Hell is the follow up to Mafia, which debuted in March 2005 at #15 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and at #1 on the Top Independent Albums chart. The top rock track ?In This River? from Mafia will be on the upcoming MTV2 Headbangers Ball: The Revenge album that is out April 11th. BLS, who were just announced as the Ozzfest second stage headliner, will tour the world extensively in support of the new album. Zakk is currently finishing up the newest from BLS and writing and recording with Ozzy Osbourne for his new album.

"Signing Zakk and Black Label Society is an honor,? stated Roadrunner Records Director of A&R Mike Gitter (Killswitch Engage, Cradle of Filth). ?The guy is genuine, rock royalty whose talent is only matched by his vision. He is the real deal and his legacy, as one of the greatest guitarists of all time has already been cemented.?

Guitar World Magazine?s 3 time reigning MVP who in their year end readers poll was named #1 most valuable player, #1 best metal guitarist and #1 best shredder and the recipient of Metal Hammer Magazine?s 2005 ?Riff Lord? Recently Zakk re-upped with Gibson Guitars who fully endorses him with a line of custom made Les Paul?s and this year Marshall Amplification will make a special limited edition ?Zakk Stack.? Zakk is the only artist aside from Jimi Hendrix to have a Marshall amplifier named after him

In 1986, at the age of 19, Zakk was plucked from a gas station in NJ to be the new guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. He quickly asserted not only his guitar skills but also his songwriting prowess, having co-written some of Ozzy?s best-selling albums including, No Rest For The Wicked, No More Tears and Ozzmosis. Additionally, he has released one album with the short-lived project Pride & Glory, one solo album and seven albums with Black Label Society. Lastly, BLS has released the DVD Boozed, Broozed & Broken-Boned- Live with the Detroit Chapter, which is certified Platinum. Cool to see BLS get signed to Roadrunner, which will hopefully mean more exposure for them.
Interesting to see Michael Beinhorn on his new album too. I think Zakk could make the best BLS album with a little more direction from a well reknowned producer.

The Associated Press recently conducted a short interview with OZZY OSBOURNE/BLACK LABEL SOCIETY axeman Zakk Wylde. Read on:

AP: What is the BLACK LABEL SOCIETY?

Wylde: "The running joke was that it was a bowling and drinking club. But we suck at the bowling and just drink more. When BLACK LABEL started, it was heavier music and I was thinking about naming it black something. My wife asked me the name of the hard alcohol ? Black Label. It's just the term for your best stock."

AP: How does it feel to more or less be launching your new album ? after the success of the last one ? with a second-stage headlining spot on Ozzfest?

Wylde: "It's awesome. It's called 'Shot to Hell'. It?s all about our pancreas, kidneys and livers after Ozzfest. We have a batch of extras on ice all the time. If you blow one out, we'll stick another one in you and pour you another cocktail at the same time."

AP: So you're a pretty big party guy?

Wylde: "I never did hard drugs. The only partyin' I ever did was drink beer and that's pretty much what I do now. I like being in control all the time anyway. I would never show up on stage smashed."

AP: What about Ozzy?

Wylde: "One thing with the boss, when I first joined the band he was still getting loaded ? drinking, doing coke. But he never drank before the shows. After the shows, he'd get (messed up) and I'd wonder how we were going to do the show the next day. He'd always show up. I heard stories with SABBATH where he'd disappear for three days and they couldn't find him."

AP: What's your most outrageous backstage diva request?

Wylde: "I never go backstage. These days I just stay on the bus. You're looking at a $1 million tour bus with everything on there ? guitars, ESPN, satellite TV. I sit and practice all day and I have beer and guitars. Why the hell do I need to get off? I'm married with three kids ? I'm the Al Bundy of metal. It would just lead to trouble.

AP: You have three kids and seven dogs ? do you ever get any sort of peace at home?

Wylde: "It's definitely an insane asylum. I wouldn't change it for nothin'. I don't care how much money you make, if you don't have anyone to share it with, what's the point of having it?"

Roadrunner Records has pushed back the projected U.S. release date of the new BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album, "Shot to Hell", to September 19 from the previously announced July 3, a spokesperson for the label has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET.

"Shot to Hell" will be BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's first release for Roadrunner. The album is the follow-up to "Mafia", which debuted in March 2005 at #15 on The Billboard 200 chart and at #1 on the Top Independent Albums chart. The top rock track "In This River" from "Mafia" was recently included on the "MTV2 Headbangers Ball: The Revenge" album, also available on Roadrunner.

BLS, who have secured a second-stage headlining slot at this year's Ozzfest, will tour the world extensively in support of the new album. BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde is also writing and recording with OZZY OSBOURNE for his new CD, to be released sometime next year.

On top of helping Ozzy Osbourne write songs for his next record, guitarist Zakk Wylde is putting the finishing touches on "Shot To Hell", his first BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album for Roadrunner Records. Produced by Zakk and Michael Beinhorn (OZZY, KORN, SOUNDGARDEN), and recorded with longtime pals Craig Nunenmacher (drums) and John "J.D." DeServio (bass), "Shot To Hell" takes the ferocious hard rock of such BLS albums as 2003's "Blessed Hellride" and 2005's "Mafia" to a whole new level of "brewtality."

"I never run out of ideas," Zakk says. "We just came in here and started knocking it out. That's how you make records." That take-no-prisoners attitude is all over such snarling tracks as "Concrete Jungle", "Blood Is Thicker Than Water" and "Give Yourself To Me", while reflective ballads like "Lead Me To Your Door" and "Sick Of It All" mix moody melodies with screaming guitar solos. "It's a real cool mix of heavy shit and mellow shit," Zakk explains.

During the recording of "Shot To Hell", Zakk and crew turned Ameraycan Studios in North Hollywood, CA into a cross between a Guitar Center and a teenage boy's bedroom. "We had a Mellotron in here, a Hammond B-3, a ton of Marshalls and just about every guitar I own," Zakk recalls. "It looked like 'Sanford and Son' out in the parking lot ? a whole garage-sale going on with the equipment, you know? And we had pictures taped up on the walls of Randy Rhoads and Jimmy Page, just for inspiration, because you've still gotta listen to music with a fourteen-year-old's ears. Remembering when you were like, 'Dude, we're going to see ZEPPELIN this weekend!' ? that's what it's all about, man. Because once you lose that, then you shouldn't be doing it anymore."

In the two decades since Ozzy plucked him from obscurity (at a gas station job in New Jersey) and hired him to be his new guitarist, Zakk has established himself as a guitar icon on the same level as Rhoads, Page and Eddie Van Halen, thanks to the impressive work he's done with Ozzy, as a solo artist, and as the leader of PRIDE & GLORY and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. He's won practically every guitar magazine award there is, and he's regularly cited as a major influence by the latest wave of metal guitarists. For Zakk, such recognition is humbling and gratifying, especially since he and his late pal Dimebag Darrell were about the only guitarists still flying the flag for seriously shredding solos during the nu-metal Nineties.

"Me and Dime would always say to each other, 'Are we the only two assholes who can still get from low E to high E and back safely? Does anyone even practice scales anymore?'" Zakk says with a laugh. "But if what I do inspires some kid to pick up a guitar and jam, that's the shit, without a doubt. You can always get better, though that's how I look at it. You never turn your back on practicing - that's what got you where you're at. You could be the heavyweight champion of the world, but you've still gotta train, you've still gotta focus on what got you there. When you lose sight of that, then everything just falls to shit. I'll tell ya, brother, I talk to God every day, and thank him for everything I've got."

Indeed, Zakk has plenty to be thankful for. Despite his gruff exterior and rowdy reputation, he's a devoted family man who's still married to Barbaranne, his high school sweetheart, and who dotes lovingly on his three children and his seven dogs.

"People say, 'Zakk, you must get a lot of chicks,' and I always laugh," he reflects. "When you've got filet mignon at the house, why would you go to McDonald's? I mean, I've got buddies with chicks in every town, but I'd rather just go to a pub and relax, talk to the bartender and solve the problems of the world. This business is like being in an insane asylum, and you need time to relax and get away from it all. What works for me is being with my family, drinking a beer, hanging out, and lifting weights."

The summer of 2006 figures to be a busy one for Zakk. Not only will BLACK LABEL SOCIETY be headlining the second stage at Ozzfest, but he'll be playing guitar for Ozzy's selected Ozzfest appearances. "Ozzy's scheduled to do about ten shows," he says, "but I know him ? if he's having a good time, and his voice feels fine, he's gonna wanna keep doing more. I've got no problem with that, because I love playing with him."

BLACK LABEL's Ozzfest appearances are certain to draw a large contingent of what Zakk terms "The Brotherhood" ? BLACK LABEL's network of diehard fans, who sport their BLS "colors" and local chapter affiliations at every show. "It's just like one big family," Zakk says. "The beauty of it is that it's bigger than me, it's bigger than the band. It's become a lifestyle ? just like how Harley-Davidson is more than a motorcycle. All the chapters come down to the shows we all hang out and take the piss out of each other ? the Boston chapter roaches my ass all the time, because they know I'm a Yankee guy. And whenever we're near a big city on Ozzfest, we'll check and see if there's a baseball game happening that night, and we'll round up our troops from the local chapter and hit a game."

Zakk's a major sports fan, and an ardent supporter of the Yankees, New York Giants, New York Knicks and New Jersey Devils. Baseball legend Mike Piazza is the godfather of Zakk's son, Hendrix, and Zakk has had the honor of playing the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium, Shea Stadium, Staples Center and Madison Square Garden. "Whenever I play it, the home team always wins," Zakk laughs. "If I can keep my streak up, I won't have to perform live anymore ? I'll just hire myself out to play the National Anthem. The phone's definitely gonna get busy around playoff time!"

ZAKK WYLDE Says He Was Just A 'Studio Guitar Player' On Last OZZY OSBOURNE Record - July 3, 2006
Mick Stingley of Metal Edge magazine recently conducted an interview with guitarist Zakk Wylde (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Metal Edge: It's been a while since you and Ozzy wrote together.

Zakk: "Well, we didn't? With the last album [2001's 'Down to Earth'], I didn't even write anything on it, you know what I'm saying? So, with 'Ozzmosis' [1995], it was? The way that one was written, we were all over the place, you know? It wasn't like we sat down and wrote the thing. The way it is now, we're just going over to Ozzy's studio and knocking it out there. You know, I just come in and start jamming some riffs, and that's it."

Metal Edge: Was there pressure on Ozzy from his record company to use outside writers? To write "hits?"

Zakk: "I don't know about record company pressure for hits. I mean, as far as hits go, look at 'No More Tears'. 'No More Tears' ended up being a hit song, on radio, but if you really listen to the song, it's so friggin' long. I would have never thought that thing would've gone on the radio. 'Mama I'm Coming Home', if it's like a ballad, obviously it's going to have, you know, odds are that it would be a better choice as to what gets played on the radio. But with Ozz, the last album was already written, so I was more or less like a studio guitar player on that record. Everything was already done, so I just came in, and I was able to do my own thing, put my treatments on there, whatever, my squeals, and pings, and this and that, and yadda yadda yadda. I put my own stamp on it, but everything was already written. Ozzy had been writing with a bunch of different guys and stuff like that, and he was like, 'Zakk, I dig the material, but I don't want to sit around for another five months writing songs.' He was like, 'Enough is enough. I just want to record the thing and get out on the road."

Metal Edge: What did you think about that Rolling Stone issue a couple of years ago, with a list of top guitarists?

Zakk: "Oh, God? That thing was pathetic. I mean, dude, I think they had Eddie Van Halen at, like, 70-something, Randy Rhoads almost didn't even make the list. I was like, 'You gotta be kidding me!' Then they had Kurt Cobain, he's like, 12??? God bless his soul, Kurt was a great songwriter ? you know what I mean? ? who happened to be playing guitar. He would have been laughing his balls off, above Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. Yngwie wasn't even on the friggin' list! Steve Vai wasn't on the list. I don't even know if Slash was on the list, and we're not even talking about rock guitar players. Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, none of these guys were on that list. I mean, I don't know who figured out that list."

Metal Edge: Were you bothered that you weren't on the list? Certainly your fans were?

Zakk: "Nah? It's Rolling Stone. I just laughed. Their audience would vote Dave Matthews the best guitar player on the planet, you know what I mean? And that's that audience, and there's nothing wrong with that ? it is what it is. I could understand if the guitar magazines had a list, and Yngwie wasn't on it, gimme a break. It was unbelievable?"

i dont think pantera should do a reunion tour without dime.

all those four members are what made pantera what it was.

i just think they should leave it, or at least the name pantera.

if they made a band with the 3 members and zakk, play pantera stuff but not under the name that would be great!

cause zakk should defo be the one. he and dime were so close.

Vinny will never work with Phil. Wont happen.

An e-card for the upcoming BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album, "Shot to Hell", featuring album info, weblinks, AIM icon, and links to a contest giving away five signature Zakk Wylde model guitars, can be accessed at this location. The e-card also contains full streaming versions of "Concrete Jungle", "Black Mass Reverends" and "Blood is Thicker than Water", taken from the upcoming CD.

Produced by Zakk and Michael Beinhorn (OZZY OSBOURNE, KORN, SOUNDGARDEN), and recorded with longtime pals Craig Nunenmacher (drums) and John "J.D." DeServio (bass), "Shot to Hell" takes the ferocious hard rock of such BLS albums as 2003's "Blessed Hellride" and 2005's "Mafia" to a whole new level of "brewtality." A September 12 release via Roadrunner Records is expected.

Justin Donnelly of Australia's The Metal Forge webzine recently conducted an interview with guitarist Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY). A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On the new BLACK LABEL SOCIETY album, "Shot to Hell":

"As always, there's going to be some mellow stuff on it, along with the heavy stuff. My whole thing is like this ? you could ask me which album is my favourite LED ZEPPELIN or BLACK SABBATH album, and the only way I can answer that is to say that I love them all. It just depends on what mood I'm in. If we're on a road trip, and we don't want to hear 'Led Zeppelin IV' any more, we'll put on'Physical Graffiti', 'Presence' or something that we haven't heard in a while. If we don't want to hear 'Iron Man' or 'Paranoid' any more, we'll put on 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' or 'Sabotage'. It's like THE ROLLING STONES, who are on the radio right now. Whatever comes out from the STONES these days, I'll buy it. Obviously you have the classic STONES, and then you have the new STONES. But it's always the STONES. It's all good in my mind. The way I always look at it, if you say your latest album is the best thing you have ever done, then you're only discrediting all the other albums that you've recorded in the past. I think BLACK LABEL SOCIETY albums work in much the same way. They're all different in some way, but you also know what you're getting yourself in for."

On working with producer Michael Beinhorn on "Shot to Hell":

"The last time I worked with Beinhorn was when I working with OZZY OSBOURNE on the 'Ozzmosis' album back in 1996. That was years ago man. And before that, the last time I saw Beinhorn was on my thirtieth birthday, which was nine years ago. But working with Beinhorn was great. He's a BLACK LABEL brother, and I love him to death. Beinhorn would just come down and ask me if I needed him on the day. More often than not, I said no. When you know where the fuck you're going, you don't need to ask for directions, right? Trust me, its like telling Jimmy Page to get a producer. If I want a producer, I'll get Beinhorn down here. I don't need to be babysat by a show-off! (Laughs) Making this album was exactly the same as when we were making 'Ozzmosis'. We had a great time. His job was more about helping me get the tones on the guitar. Beinhorn's not going to tell me how to write the songs. You don't tell anybody how to write songs. It's the same as if I was producing something for a band. I might be there for advice, or for my experience, but I certainly wouldn't be there to tell them how to write a fucking song! (Laughs)"

On the current status of the new OZZY OSBOURNE studio album:

"We have, like, twenty songs completed man, and I had everything to do with this album, including all the riffs and the mellow shit. I mean everything. That's the way it should be done. Not like last time around! (2001's 'Down To Earth', where Wylde was simply a session guitarist, with no songwriting contributions towards the album) My track record speaks for itself. Between 'No Rest For The Wicked' (1988) and 'No More Tears' (1992), I think it's fucking safe to say at this point that I know what the fuck I'm doing. I care about Osbourne. I mean, he's the godfather of my son. I just didn't want to see another situation like last time around where there were all these cock-sucking clowns who haven't written a fucking song for anybody coming around to the studio passing Ozzy songs. They're just a bunch of fucking bullshit artists, and it really pissed me the fuck off. They just want to get their head inside Ozzy's ass. I saw that coming, and I ain't got time for that bullshit this time. I see it all the time. They don't bleed this shit, and that's the reason why I care. Once you get the money involved, all they want is to get their grubby fucking paws all over it all. The bottom line is my job is to protect him. So while I have a bit of time up my sleeves before these upcoming rehearsals, I'm going to be working with Osbourne. I'll be there just to help him out on the melodies and all that stuff. Osbourne has got to get this album done. The music is done right now, it's just a matter of the boss singing his balls off, and then it's all good to go. The plan is to have the album released in February next year. By that time, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY will already be touring with the 'Shot to Hell' album. So Ozzy will be headlining, with BLACK LABEL supporting, with an opening act supporting the two of us."

Black Label Society's new album, Shot to Hell, will be in record stores tomorrow and testimonials are pouring in from a few of guitarist Zakk Wylde friends and associates...

When asked what he thought of his long-time partner in crime's new BLS album, the Prince of Fucking Darkness himself decreed: "Black Label Society's new album, Shot to Hell, kicks ass. Right now there's not another rock guitarist alive who can go toe-to-toe with Zakk Wylde. He's in a class all by himself." ~ Ozzy Osbourne
Meanwhile, Rita Abbott - a longtime friend and widow of the one and only 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott - had this to say: "The last true living legend! [Shot to Hell is] pure brutality at it's finest, done only by the man who can... Zakk, you rock! ~ DimebagzHag, Rita

Agreed, Zakk keeps turning out kickass albums one after another.  The last 5 BLS albums have all been excellent, and he's turned them all out in a matter if about 4 years.  He's a fuckin' song machine.

Just got home from seeing BLS in concert here in Sydney Australia, and man, what a f**kin' awesome gig!

Zakk Wylde was spot on with everything he played and was pretty receptive to the crowd too. : ok:

Can't remember the setlist exactly, but they opened with The Beginning At Last, closed with Stillborn, and the set was pretty heavy on Blessed Hellride tracks as well as quite a few from the new album Shot To Hell. All the songs sounded great though. Zakk even played keyboards on In This River, and dedicated The Last Goodbye to Steve Irwin and Peter Brock (Aussie's who've recently passed away). Nick played the solo in that one too, and replicated Zakk's studio solo perfectly.
Only disappointment for me was not hearing Demise Of Sanity played, because it's my fav BLS tune, but other than that I can't complain.

Will write up more about the gig later, I gotta get some sleep!

Oct. 19th show in Jersey

Alright. Kick ass show indeed. Black Stone Cherry opened for BLS. Which I thought would be a good choice. I was wrong. They overstayed their welcome on stage. Extended their songs and shit that def. wasn't needed. They are talented but after a few of their songs you just want the BLS machine to come kick ass.

Now the place is packed and the BLS chants start coming. BLS goes on around ten. They open with New Religion and it kicked fuckin as much ass as you would think. The crowd last night was insane. NJ really stepped it up and made the band feel damn good. Nick Cantanse handled the solos for Spoke in the Wheel, The Last Goodbye, and In This River. I was happy to see Nick get some time to shine and he pulled off all 3 solos beautifully.

We had a great "DIME BAG" chant going. Zakk stopped the band and all you heard was the Dimebag chant which was amazing.

Zakk was in top form tonight. Voice, playing, everything. Ripped some killer solos and ripped through the set list. Great fucking show. The closed with Stillborn which was the song of the night for me. Just kicked all kinds of ass.. The whole place had their arms up and was singing along. Bleed for Me was another ass kicking song. Here's the set list from what I remember.

New Religion
Forever Down
Been a Long Time
Bleed For Me
Beginning at Last
Suffering Overdue
Funeral Bell
Spoke in the Wheel
The Last Goodbye
Sucide Messiah
In This River
Black Mass Reverends
Concrete Jungle
Fire It Up
Stillborn

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY is the featured musical guest in the new MTV wrestling show, dubbed "Wrestling Society X", which is set to receive its premiere on January 30 at 10:30 p.m.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's performance footage was shot on February 9, 2006 in Los Angeles. The band reportedly played four songs in total, and are said to have performed one of the tracks twice in order to get it "just right." The identity of the musical guests at the event was not revealed prior to the taping so it is unclear how many of the attendees were actually BLACK LABEL SOCIETY fans. According to reports, approximately 250 people were present at the taping.

You know, I didn't know about the tickets either man. Some lady at work knows I dig BLS, as she does as well, so she told me.

I seen VR at the Kool Haus, front row, and your real fucking close man, you can literally lean over and touch Zakk. You will defenitly be sore the next day.

Here is a pic I took of Slash when I saw VR at the Kool Haus. It's pretty big.

The Beatles or The Stones? with Zakk Wylde

The Beatles or The Stones? with Zakk Wylde

Does Zakk Let It Be or Let It Bleed? Read on and find out (? Tim Mosenfelder/Corbis)

View in gallery

Zakk Wylde sprawls his massive frame on the couch in his Manhattan hotel suite and gulps coffee. This is his second cup since I've been in the room, and the guitarist will have several more during the course of our interview.

"Caffeine's all I got, bro," he says. "It's a sad, sad tale of woe, this pitiful existence of mine." And with that, he breaks into fake, overwrought sobs. "I'd cry in my beer, but look around - not a drop in the house. It's tragic!"

In truth, Wylde is brimming with good-natured cheer - which is especially surprising when you consider that the once two-fisted drinker has had to abstain from alcohol - doctor's orders - following a potentially life-threatening bout with blood clots last summer.

It's been a tumultuous year on the professional front as well: after 21 years of working with Ozzy Osbourne, a collaboration that bordered more on a father-and-son relationship than boss and employee, Wylde was replaced - unceremoniously, it would appear - by the little-known Greek guitarist Gus G.

From Eddie Trunk:

02-Nov-09

Great time Saturday night for the Halloween party with BLS. Got to see Zakk for a bit before doors opened and he looked great and was feeling well. Zakk said as a result of the blood clots in his body he will need to be on meds for at least a year and can not touch alcohol. As a result Zakk is now totally sober, and as a result he was playing and singing better than ever, so maybe in a way this health scare will have a silver lining. BLS has a bunch of music now over about 7 studio albums. Much was represented in the set including Bleed For Me, Fire It Up and closer Stillborn. Zakk and the band really were in top form. The stage looked great and it was loud as hell as you would imagine. Zakk did not do any Ozzy or Sabbath material. BLS will soon be working on a new studio album and some material is already written.

Zakk Wylde on his Ozzy split, his health and the future

Kind words for his replacement, Gus G

Joe Bosso, Fri 6 Nov 2009

Now, I know Ozzy is like family to you, but when it all did happen - I know you were kind of kidding - it seemed to take people surprise -

"Well, I found out from Neil Zlozower, 'cause he was doing a photo shoot with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. He calls up and goes, 'Hey dude, I hear you're not playing with Ozzy anymore.' I go, 'Where'd you hear this?" And he's like, 'I heard it from Gene and Paul.' So I go, 'Well, I guess I'm not playing with Ozzy!'" [laughs]

But was it a shock?

"It's always been this way: 'We're going out on the road.' It's like, 'When?' 'Tomorrow.' 'What?!'

"I'm the last person to find out anything, you know? 'Wait a minute?I have three kids?' [laughs] 'Yeah, they're 17, 16 and 7, man, so we need some college money now.'

"But I've been with Oz since I was 19; I'm fucking 42 years old. It's just like?like with my dad passing away, same with my mom?I don't go, 'Oh, this sucks.' I never ask; I always thank.

"At least I got to spend 23 years with the boss. And he knows I'll always be there with him. Gus who's playing with him, he's fucking awesome. So I hope he has a millisecond of the good time I had - that's a fucking lifetime. Gus will have a fucking blast, you know what I mean?"

WYLDE: 'I ALMOST DIED'

Rocker ZAKK WYLDE nearly died after he was diagnosed with a rare blood clotting disorder in August (09).

The Black Label Society musician, Ozzy Osbourne's former sideman, was forced to pull his band off the bill of the Pedal To The Metal Tour earlier this year (09) when he was hospitalised in Eugene, Oregon.

Wylde is now on a 12-month course of medication and has to provide blood samples every two weeks to monitor the genetic condition.
The rocker has also been placed on an alcohol ban, and although he insists he won't drink booze, he refuses to shelve his rock star lifestyle.
He says, "I nearly f**king croaked (died). The doctors told me the clots passed through my heart three times and should have killed me. How do I feel? Relieved!

"That party's over (drinking alcohol)... Within the last few years I've had throat surgery, an umbilical hernia, cracked my spine, broken a rib and torn cartilage. I'll still do the same bulls**t I did before. It's not like I had this amazing epiphany. That's for f**king douchebags! Every day I'm grateful for everything I've got."

Zakk Wylde: 'Without Ozzy, There'd Be No Zakk Wylde; No Black Label'

12/17/2009

Good to hear you?ll be around for a while. Which means having to deal with the Ozzy situation. What happened? Why would he want to replace you?

Well, you know, I love Ozz and I?ve always got his back so whatever it is he wants to do. Without Ozzy, there?d be no Zakk Wylde; there?d be no Black Label. When Ozz would do the Sabbath stuff, he?d say, ?Guys, I?m going away for a while; I?m gonna be doing Sabbath.? This is back when Mike [Bordin] joined Alice in Chains and I started doing the P&G stuff even before Black Label. He was like, ?Guys if anything comes up, you guys should do somethin? because I don?t know how long I?ll be with the guys [Sabbath]. It could be a year or two years.?

Ozz has always been cool. Even when we did Down to Earth Ozz was like, ?Zakk, I write these songs with all these other guys and I don?t want to fuckin? rewrite a whole record. Can you just come in and wail on the fuckin? songs and shit like that? And we?ll go out on the road.? And I said, ?Yeah, Ozz, no problem; whatever the fuck you want to do, man.?

It didn?t bother you that Ozzy was auditioning other guitar players and didn?t really say anything to you?

I mean with us there?s never any arguments; there?s no fights or nothing. It?s just, ?What do you want to do, Steve?? It?s like, ?Ahh, Zakk, I want to go jam with these guys now.? It?s like with Slash and Scottie and all the guys and if they?re gonna stop doing Velvet Revolver for a while. And then Scott is going to do Stone Temple Pilots; Duff is gonna do Loaded; Slash is gonna do his solo thing; Matt?s gonna be jammin? with the Cult again and then they?re gonna get back together. It?s just like no big deal. It?s like Genesis ? there?s Mike and the Mechanics and Phil is doing his solo thing and the keyboard player is doing movie soundtracks. And then it?s like, ?Let?s get back together and do a fuckin? album.?

I love Ozz and Sharon; Sharon is like my mother. Barbara Ann [Zakk?s wife] still hangs out with Sharon all the time. They go to Dancing With the Stars to see Kelly and all that shit. They hang out and have lunch and just chill and have a good time.

I always told everybody when the day would come when Ozz would say, ?I don?t feel like doin? this shit no more.? What are you supposed to do? But you better figure somethin? out. You know what I mean?

Certainly Ozzy has every right to play with a new guitar player. But he didn?t even tell you to your face what he was doing and that seems wrong.

Neil Zlozower [photographer] was doing a photo shoot with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley and he heard that I wasn?t playing with Ozzy anymore. And I just go, ?That?s cool.? I guess if Uncle Gene says that, I?m not playing with him anymore. People were asking and I?d go, ?Fuck if I know, dude.? Because I was out on the road anyway doing Black Label shit. The last show I did with Ozz was with Metallica down in Dallas and that was already a year ago in June. And obviously Mike was out with Faith No More.

I remember it was during last year?s [baseball] playoffs when the Dodgers were playing the Phillies and that?s when we were over at Ozzy?s just throwing riffs down and Mike was over there and just fuckin? wailin? every day. We were just recording shit and I did like 16 or 18 songs. So we had that and I figured when we were off the road, it was like, ?Oh, yeah, Ozz will have a chance to put some vocals down or whatever.? The game plan was to get that done, another Black Label album, and start touring again.

But I didn?t know. I talked to Ozz and I was like, ?Hey, buddy, what are you doing?? And he goes, ?Oh, Zakk, I just wanted to say thanks because I know your time is fuckin? crazy with everything that?s going on.? I go, ?Let?s don?t make a big deal out of it, Ozzy.? I was in the middle of doing shows that we were doing [with BLS] and I had already committed to the guys to doing the shows. I was gonna blow one of the shows off and fly down and do this show with Ozzy, knock that out, and then the next day fly back out on the road and do another Black Label gig on the Pedal to the Metal tour.

So Ozzy found another guitar player for the show.

Yeah, Ozz was like, ?Zakk, I think on this one I?m just gonna use somebody else.? I said, ?Oh, okay, Ozz, no fuckin? problem. Just let me know if you ever need me you know where I?m at. I?m a phone call away. I love you, bro.? And that was about it, man.

Have you heard Gus G. play?

I?m sure he can fuckin? wail if he?s got to play Randy?s stuff and Jake?s shit. Obviously he knows what the fuck he?s doin?.

He?s a good guitar player.

Cool; good for him. It was just like when Joe Holmes was playing and if Gus is gonna be jamming or anybody, I wish them all the fuckin? best. If you?re gonna be playing with Ozzy, I hope you have as good a time as I did. Or just a quarter of it would be fuckin? slammin?, dude.

Zakk Wylde: Back with Black

Andrew Vaughan | 07.07.2010

As Zakk Wylde gears up for a new tour and the release of Black Label Society?s new album, Order of the Black, Metal Hammer?s newly anointed ?Golden God? and Revolver?s ?Best Guitarist? has been chatting about the new record, the split with Ozzy, quitting the drink and Justin Bieber.

Wylde, a prodigiously talented kid who was dragged from a gas station and thrust in front of the world by his metal mentor Ozzy Osbourne, who became one of hard rock?s most decorated and accomplished guitarists, not to mention the founder of the ?ber successful Black Label Society, had a setback or two last year.

Doctors discovered blood clots in his leg. ?The doc was like, ?You have, what, a drink a day?? Six? 12? A case?? I?m like, ?It?s a liquid diet,?? Wylde says, laughing. ?I mean, I?d drink beer while lifting weights. That?s Black Label Society style for you right there. But the doc told me if I kept this up, I?d be dead by the time I was 50. So I stopped drinking. No big deal.?

More unexpected perhaps was news that Osbourne, Wylde?s boss and mentor since 1988, wanted a new guitarist. ?I heard that, and to me, hey, the glass was half-full,? he says. ?It?s like, thanks for letting me be there for 23 years! I?ll always cherish that. What more could Ozzy do for me at this point?? Wylde is genuinely appreciative of everything Ozzy did for him and Black label Society will perform on this summer?s Ozzfest tour before heading out on their own. ?I look at it this way: instead of 24-7, Black Label Society is now my life 25-8.?

Order of the Black, the band?s eighth album, continues Wylde?s love of melody-stuffed, song-led rock. The first single, ?Parade of the Dead,? features some incredible shredding from Wylde described by one online fan as ?a bit Randy Rhoads-ian. I love it!?

Wylde recorded the new album ? available August 10 ? with bandmate JD DeServio and new drummer Will Hunt in his home studio, a.k.a. the Black Label Bunker. ?I gutted the whole place, made it state-of-the-art, mixed and recorded there ? the whole thing came out slammin?,? Wylde says. He plans on recording bands there for his own record label, Panworkz.

As a whole, the album is a logical continuation of the Black Label Society ethos.

?It?s just whatever the songs are,? Wylde says. ?I hate bands who are like ?This is our heaviest yet?? so it?s just picking and screaming now? Or, ?This is the fastest guitar playing I?ve ever done.? Then you?re listening to notes. My favorite artists ? Zeppelin, Sabbath, Elton John ? the whole thing is songs. Back in Black wasn?t the heaviest or most vulgar AC/DC album ? it has the best songs.?

Every guitar god has a signature guitar and Wylde, of course, has many. They include an Epiphone Flying V and the unmistakable Gibson Les Paul Bull?s-eye, as played on stage recently by Justin Bieber guitarist Dan Kanter ? something Wylde appreciated no end. ?Right now, I think a bunch of people see me on stage and think I?m playing a Dan Kanter guitar,? he says, laughing. ?All I know is, right after that photo came out of him with that guitar, our Twitter feed went from 20,000 to like 18 million. We?re bringing a lot of young chicks into the dark side.?

Wylde will head out on the road later this year on the inaugural Black Label Berzerkus tour, featuring a number of heavy bands he?s befriended over the years, including Clutch, Children of Bodom and 2cents. ?I?m always running into them, and I thought it would be an awesome excuse to get together,? he says. ?It?s going to be a tour of insanity, drunkenness (well, not for me) and dysfunction, that?s for sure.?

Catch Zakk and crew while you can, the always tongue-in-cheek metal deity says he may disappear for a while after this tour. ?I was gone for four years before this album, and suddenly I?m a Golden God and metal?s Best Guitarist. Next time I?m gonna go away for 15 years and come back with a Pulitzer and a Nobel Peace Prize.?

Zakk Wylde on his new album, post-Ozzy life

"My relationship with Oz is just the same as it's ever been. Just the other night, me and Barb went out to dinner with Ozzy and Sharon. We went out to a steakhouse and laughed our asses off, you know? Everything's cool with us. It's like with your parents: nothing's changed, except you don't live at home anymore.

"People think that this is some nasty thing or had to be like some sort of Slash and Axl situation. It's not. I remember Ozzy saying years ago, 'Zakk, I don't want to be the lead singer in Black Label.' I have to respect the way he feels and how he hears things.

"And listen, without Oz, I wouldn't be doing any of the things I'm doing. I've got my own label, Panworkz; I'm going to be coming out with Black Label beef jerky, coffee, beer; I'm working on opening up Black Label pubs - you know, like sports bars with live entertainment; I'm working on a movie script and a coffee table book. I'm booked solid, man, and none of it would be happening without Oz. So God bless him, you know what I mean? He's the best."

ZAKK WYLDE Performs On 'American Idol' (Video) - Apr. 13, 2011
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY/ex-OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Zakk Wylde performed the SAMMY HAGAR classic "Heavy Metal" with James Durbin, the 22-year-old rocker from Santa Cruz, California, on tonight's (Wednesday, April 13) episode of "American Idol".

"Give metal a chance!" Durbin said to the camera in the preview package that aired before his performance.

Wylde said afterward that Durbin "sang his ass off."

"That felt really, really real!" judge Jennifer Lopez exclaimed. "I really loved that. I don't know what these are sounding like at home but here they are killing it dead," she said. "Who would have ever thought that on 'Idol' we would have heavy metal?"

Fellow judges Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler were equally impressed. "My God, you guys were just at a James Durbin concert, at a Zakk Wylde concert," Jackson told the audience. "I'm happy you stuck to your guns," he told Durbin of going against mentor Jimmy Iovine's recommendation. "We always tell contestants to 'do you' and tonight you did you. ... I can see you onstage with Ozzy at the next Ozzfest! Durbin rocks!"

"Outstanding, Durbin," Tyler said. "I'm glad you went with your feelings. ... Nice lip to Jimmy, man."

Durbin made "Idol" history earlier this season when he sang the first JUDAS PRIEST track "You've Got Another Thing Comin'", marking the first time PRIEST was ever performed on the main stage.

What keeps BLS writing music and doom troopin? to this day, and what can we expect to see over the rest of this year?

Out touring. At the end of this month we are in Europe. Then getting back in July. Then to South America, then over to Asia. Then we are gonna do a tour acoustic thing with maybe Father Slash and some other friends.

What led you to doing American Idol?

Chris Jericho called me up. We always like to take a piss at each other. He was like, ?Hey what?s up man?? I am sitting here with one of the guys in American Idol (James Durbin) and was wondering if maybe you wanted to come on the show?? He takes OZZY shit and makes it sound great. Called me and I was there Tuesday and had it filmed on Thursday.
