yes FLac of course
i do not want to see these tapes in mp3

if i see rampant violation of this request, the shows Im taping in Europe will be reserved to a privatge group of FLAC traders

ive never been a 'horder,' but MP3s are a disservice to my recordings and I wont turn a blind eye

Hi.

I love lossless audio. This guy is willing to do so much for us provided that we don't make mp3's of these shows and share them. Let's make sure that we respect his wishes. I will be hosting only the flac's one disc at a time on my boards server, instead of hosting the whole show in mp3.

Anyone who says they can't hear the difference has a pretty shitty stereo, that's all there is to it. FLAC is the exact recording as it was, all the data. Why wouldn't you want the exact recording, even if you thought you couldn't hear the difference?

Thank you so much for both the recording of these shows, and also sharing them in there lossless audio format for those of us who have made the easy decision to choose quality over speed of download. I sincerely hope GNR fans respect your wishes and you continue to share your excellent audience recordings with us.

And to those who may choose to "remaster" these recordings, keep in mind that you should start with FLAC > WAV and then WAV > FLAC. Don't share your remasters in mp3 format once the lossless recording is available.

Title: Re: tonights recording (may 15th)
Post by: aramelus on May 16, 2006, 04:24:13 PM
Well I don't wanna burst someones bubble about the quality of FLAC. There's no denying that FLAC is the way to go if you want to e.g. want to remaster the files because  things like wav->mp3->wav-> mp3 can decrease quality a lot. But I've never met a person or read somewhere that a person can hear the difference between an good encoded 320 kbps mp3 an a wav file.
The bad reputation that mp3 has come from noobs who are not able to use their encoder correctly, or from crc errors which you often have if you download from the net. For just listening and downloading mp3 is the way to go, FLAC files are just to large to handle in general ...

I'll remaster the full show in the way I did here:

http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=30137.0

And then, I'll share the thing in FLAC format. The wish of the guy that recorded the whole show is clear...
But, my feeling is that some people (NOT me) will encode the original show and the remaster in mp3 format soon.

I guess people can use MP3s for their personal use, just not for sharing.

Title: Re: tonights recording (may 15th)

I can hear the difference between a 320 MP3 and a FLAC.
I have over $8000 invested in my home stereo.

Bottom line is: I can tellt he difference; I hate MP3s; if people blatantly violate my wishes, you can go back to listening to so-so AUD tapes because I will enjoy the tapes myself.

Here is the recording & transfer specifications:

Recording: AKG CK31 cardioid capsules > AKG LM3 L microphone bodies > AKG MPAIIIL 48volt Phantom Power Adapters > Marantz PMD660 solid-state CF recorder w/ custom Doug Oade advanced modifications.

Transfer: Marantz PMD660 > USB2.0 > CDWave for track splitting > FLAC

Is there anyway you could release a FLAC file that's not split into tracks, or are the tracks you've already made gapless?

Of course they will be gapless.

It will be released as a 2 CD set, tracked on sector boundaries and FLAC encoded.

I may do the torrent tonight, I dont know.

I decided to skip the Pearl jam show and just got into milwaukee

Remember he's in the Midwest too so right now it's about 7:35am, he's probably sleeping right now. I would say we have to wait for like 5 or 6 more hours. ought oh.  dimeadozen not taking new registrations:

We are very sorry!

At the moment, there are at least 93,250 registered users at www.dimeadozen.org, the maximum allowed under DIME's current configuration.

However, free slots become available for new users daily as inactive accounts are deleted. When DIME has fewer than 93,250 registrants, new users can sign up. Please note that the statistics on DIME's web site are updated every ten minutes; therefore, you may see this message even if the web site reports fewer registered users than the maximum.

Thank you very much for your understanding.

Title: Re: tonights recording (may 15th)
Post by: ecrotty on May 17, 2006, 12:49:27 PM
I think the reason he suggests dime is because there are simply more people there other than "us" that will see the torrent and hop on...

And as you know, the more that hop on.. The better the speed.

Just my thoughts.

And I can't BELIEVE how ungrateful some of you are out there.

It's mind boggling.

If you want MP3s for yourself - MAKE them yourself.  How difficult of a concept is that.  The man wants to give you something that you want, you take it however he gives it to you.  And since it is a "digital gift", you can make it into whatever you want with the right tools.

You say you don't know how to?  Learn!

Mind boggling.

Quite honestly, if you haven't joined dime yet, you should be second in line on this, because you obviously aren't a hardcore downloading gnr junkie.

Everyone be fucking patient, stop acting like me first gimme gimme, and respect the recorders wishes. You are certainly not encouraging him to record/share with us by complaining about he's doing things.

People like timebomb, whose shared literally dozens if not hundreds of his lossless stuff should not be screwed because joe dick with one post wants to complain that he can't transfer flac's to his mp3 player, or he "can't hear the difference"

Yeah, I guess my statement comes off a little harsher than I meant it. What I'm referring to is that over the last 2-3 months, timebomb has been sharing literally hundred + GNR recordings on dime, so if you hadn't already registered for that, you probably aren't a crazy lossless audio fanatic. You download plently of GNR Lossless, and you do it from other sites? Which sites are these, btw? Because I would imagine they don't hold a candle to the amount of stuff timebomb has put on dime.

Lossy codecs [such as MP3 and Musepack] generate smaller files by discarding selected bits contained in the original songs [bits it thinks you won't notice when they're gone].

Lossless codecs, such as FLAC, on the other hand, keep *everything* .. all the audio information [bits] contained in the original song(s). Lossless codecs merely shrink the size of the original file/song by >compressing< it [usually by half].

In other words, songs compressed with lossless codecs represent exact digital clones of the originals [with regard to audio fidelity/quality]. MP3 represent poorer quality versions.

Quite honestly, if you haven't joined dime yet, you should be second in line on this, because you obviously aren't a hardcore downloading gnr junkie.

that's bullshit. i d/l PLENTY of gnr stuff. it just means you get it from other places. just cuz one isn't registered on some specific site doesn't mean you're not a "hardcore downloading gnr junkie".

everyone that's bitching just needs to be patient.

Because I would imagine they don't hold a candle to the amount of stuff timebomb has put on dime.

i never said everything i d/l is lossless. i just learned how to download and burn FLAC files 2-3 months ago. i don't have a dvd burner so d/ling a dvd is pointless. i find plenty of other stuff, maybe not lossless quality, but there's stuff out there.

besides, not everything on torrent sites is lossless anyway. how many cds have i d/l'd and they were mp3? PLENTY.

He doesn't want to do that because it would be an inferior quality of his recording. Installing FLAC support is dead easy.  ::)

Do you have a good link for a Flac plugin I can use for Windows Media Player?

Download the coreflac DECODER (you can dl and install the encoder, too, but you only need the decoder to play the files).

that should do the trick.

You MIGHT need to dl the tag extender, as well.  I can't remember, but it won't hurt ya if you do.

Listen, Im not going to argue with you about "everyone has mp3 and its easier."

I said I dont want this in MP3.

NO ARGUMENTS. Like Ive said before, if these are all over the place in MP3, I will keep my 14th recording and the 5 shows Im taping in Europe to myself.

Want to MP3 it for your ipod or to send a cpl tracks to a friend? OK.

But this show is NOT to be distributed in MP3.

Theres another source of thsi show up on DIME now too.... havent got it yet. Inferior equipment, but that doesnt always tell the whole story.

Would anyone mind telling me what FLAC is, I don't get what the big deal is of this compared to MP3 vice versa. I don't want to start some kind of huge argument I just want to know more about it. How good is the quality, not of the sound, the actual recordings, do they sound like a soundboard or what?  I am asking because if they are really amazing I have no problem getting a decoder and whatever I just want to know more about it. Most of the recordings on mp3 thus far have been decent, I have been fortunate to get 2 whole shows already (1st and last) but I am always up to get some more. Quality wise the only really good clips I have are these remastered ones from the 14th and if I can get a whole show or two that sound like this (The clips literally are great they are almost soundboard/pro quality) then I would like to get more. Again not trying to start some debate amongst guru's about mp3 inferiority just looking for some more info. Rock on Gunners, cheers!

Also, I recently got a nice set of demo's on a .rar file type would anyone happen to have any info about that file type. They are apparently kickass demos off of gn'r lies of One in a Million, You're Crazy etc. If anyone can help me get them read I am happy to share the files with you!

I wasn't familiar with FLACs either, but the quality really kicks ass...

As for the .rar files, well it's a format similar to .zip, you have to get Winrar to open it.

Thanks a lot with the help on the .rar I have to get some sleep but at least now I know what I have to do tommorow. I just downloaded a plug in, it worked but I don't know if it is working right. Anyways if I get the rest of them to work I won't convert them I can respect the wishes of the people that got us the goods in the first place...now the next thing is what is the diffrence between the torrents and flac...basically my head is spinning with the many different file formats everyone is using...but thanks for the help guys, anyway to get GN'R music works for me as long as I can get some.
