Title: The story behind Checkmate leak?
Post by: EFISH on June 09, 2006, 05:19:19 PM
Does anyone know how/why/who leaked this song?
I'm just curious.

And also, is it possible that this song is indeed "The General"
Look at the lyrics, it would make sense.

Why would he admit it was a guns n roses song, only 15 seconds of it ever leaked....

to admit it was a gnr song would just make more people want it and try to pry the leak loose.

what are the lyrics then? surely to come to some conclusion on whether the song is "The General" or not, you'd need to hear at least the verse and chorus? I haven't heard the clip, but i heard its really short so i think it may be a bit hasty to start speculating at the moment  :hihi:

ok after listening a bunch of times just now this is what i came up with.

Checkmate Lyrics
All cautions made
Every chance we're given
No effort spared
To save what we had
All in good faith

Also, someone told me that Axl a while back said "The General" starts off with loud drums or something of that sort which is what we hear from this leak. So yeah anyway..the lyrics i wrote seem something of a war so that is why i said The General might be this song.

I know I'm in the minority but I honestly do not believe it's Axl.  Listen to it loud, the thing is every leak I've heard I immediately knew it was Axl (including CITR) and this one does not give me that immediate certainty.  If I'm wrong I'm wrong but I don't think so.

I agree. I have also heard this clip over and over, very loud, and its obvious its not Axl. I no longer care about this clip. More of it would have leaked by now if it was GNR.

I may be wrong, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.

i just listened to this clip VERY loud again and again and again

and im still deffinetly convinced that it is Axl.

Title: Re: The story behind Checkmate leak?
Post by: Janabis on June 09, 2006, 11:56:57 PM
I really don't think this is GNR either, although it does sound very similar to Axl's voice. The song just seems too generic and boring to be something Axl put together.

Title: Re: The story behind Checkmate leak?
Post by: EFISH on June 09, 2006, 11:58:38 PM
its 15 seconds of the song.

if this is indeed gnr... i guarntee this will be very complex and amazing

The reason I think there's uncertainty over whether its' Axl singing or not-- is because he is using effects on his vocals. I, for one, think that it is Axl.

Title: Re: The story behind Checkmate leak?

i am prety convinced that this voice belongs to Axl

sounds good to me.

If it is GNR (which I don't think it is), it would be quite a new sound for them (although its only 16 sec).

I appreciate your difference of opinion but not the sarcasm. I am a long time GNR fan from the 80's and most certainly do recognize Axl's voice as well as anybody.  No doubt this has similarities or could even be Axl, I'm just saying I don't think it is.  Ever heard White Xmas...that sounds a bit like him too, but it's not.  It could just be the quality of the recording but I have listened to it over and over and I don't think it's him.

Title: Re: The story behind Checkmate leak?

The 4 lines are talking about taking every precaution to make sure things would work out.

Like "We were very careful not to fuck up what he had this time, we spared no effort, and gave it every chance we could."

All cautions made--
every chance was given--
no effort spared,
to save what we had.

I'm sorry, I just had to laugh.

First, someone says that the full song isn't out there.

Then someone says I have a clip, which I got from someone else.

The next comment? "So RazZ has the full song?"

I love people. Really.

Anyway, Frozen basically got the gist of it. I got it from In Town Terry, yadda yadda.....

And hey, great. It's not real apparently. Can someone figure out where it's from. I mean, it sounds like a kick ass song. The band that made it deserves credit after all.

Wait. Merck said it was fake? Nevermind. It's a G'n'R tune

It has Axl written all over the song, If it is indeed a leak then someone must have spent alot of time mastering Axl. It even has the sound quality from around the catcher sessions. It even sounds like Josh Freese on the track.

It's probably just as funny to them when you say it's a fake.  ;)

I heard the clip a while back, and I find it strange how people can't recognize Axl's voice. Do they spend all their time on a certain message board talking about Guns instead of listening to them?  ::)

Just kidding. It's all good. We'll all have it confirmed "eventually".

I've been listening to Axl & co. repeatedly/consistently since '87.? From 87 to 93 I listened to GNR every-friggin-day.

THAT is without a doubt Axl.? He's singing in a key different than his norm no doubt.?

Remember that girl in that band (sorry i forget) that Axl was talking to in LA right around the time he started hitting parties and clubs??? The blond??? Anyway she stated that Axl told her that he was going to be getting away from the screetching style singing.

Which leads me to another thing, I believe we should all enjoy and appreciate the current setlist as someday it may end up being rare to hear material from AFD.

Makes sense if Axl wants to be able to save his voice for the future.

AND if that is not Axl, then I want to know who the hell that is because that clip as ABSOLUTELY OFF THE HOOK FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

C'mon people, if that was from an existing band other than GNR they would be beyond well known.
