Title: The Replacements
Post by: RichardNixon on August 01, 2004, 03:24:12 AM
I don't know if this band has been brought up before, so my apologies if they have.

At anyrate, I bought a few of their albums because of Tommy Stinson. I wanted to see what his style/playing was like. Plus, I heard that they were a good band.

The verdict? This band kicks some serious ass. If your looking to get into some new music, check them out. Esp, "Let It Be," "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me."

I'm not a huge punk fan, but I love this band. It's more garage/punk, and unlike some other bands, they had really good hooks/melody. If you are more of a punk fan, check out their early albums "Sorry Ma, Forgot to take out the Trash," "Stink" and "Hootenany."

The last two albums "Don't Tell a Soul" and "All Shock Down" are more polished. The former far more slick and produced and the latter more stripped down. "All Shock Down" was meant to be a Paul Westerberg solo album, but the suits at the label made him put a "Replacements" label on it. Westerberg's solo stuff is good, esp his first album "14 Songs."

Good question, i was thinking about this the other day. I am not too familiar with there stuff, i always liked the bands that came out of Minneapolis, Soul Asylum, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog etc. I need to pick up one of there cds.

"Tim" is their most significant album. Great album. Catchy songs, even an acoustic there " Here Comes the regular" which has the same chord progression as "Knocking on heaven's door"

My fav tracks are " Bastards of young", " Kiss me on the Bus" ( this has been their highest top chart single so far I think) , " Left on the Dial".

I recommend you download "Bastards of young" and "here comes the regular" and take it from there.

I recommend you to start with one of those three : Let it be, Tim or Pleased to meet me. Let it be is my personal favourite, but from the first to the last they all sound very different, and they're all good. Really. And there aren't many bands I can say that about.

The only one I own is "Tim". It's one of the most solid albums I've ever heard. I guess it could be somehow compared to GNR's AFD (not musically of course) because there are no filler songs. Every song in there is pure gold. From "Bastards of young" , "Kiss me on the bus", "Left of the dial" and let's not forget "here comes the regular". This one - by the way - has the same chords as Used to lover her, although not the same tempo.

I'll get my hands on the other two albums Pandora mentioned...hopefully they'll be just as good.

Another thing : if you start with Tim, don't let the poor production throw you off. Behind it are, as Ignatius said, pure gold songs. The sound is very very muddy because the album was produced by a former member of the Ramones and the guy was half deaf, so....  :hihi:  I for one don't really mind that, but I know it tends to put off some people.
On the other hand, Let it be and Pleased to meet me are damn near perfect soundwise.

I own 'Let it Be' - amazing album.  I'm not sure if they were showing their Beatles' appreciation, or just making a joke.

'Black Diamond' is killer!  It's the most hard-rock song on there, as opposed to a punk type song.

'Androgynous' is one of the best songs ever  ;D  It has a OIAM-type feel to it...in the sense that what Paul is singing is shocking, but the background music is very peaceful.

I bought 'Let it Be' after I bought Tommy's VGH.  How do you guys compare VGH to the Mats albums?   Tommy's stuff is more mellow, but still good, IMO.

Come on, there must be a few fans!

Sorry, I see there is a new thread on the best of replacements. Anyway to combine the threads?

Nobody has mentioned it so I have to highly recommend "Sorry Ma Forgot To Take Out The Trash". All the other recommendations are spot on but this one is my favorite. Check out the tracks "Johnny's Gonna Die", "Customer", and "Shiftless When Idle"

As far as I'm concerned, American Punk groups started and stopped with The Ramones and The Replacements.

I bought Tim years back when "Kiss Me on the Bus" was on the radio; I like it, don't really love it;  rarely listen to it anymore.  They were definitely a good band but never really did it for me personally.  Anyway, my favorite song is Swinging Party.

"Bring your own lampshade..."

I only own Let It Be, but it's a great album, proper rock tunes.

"Gary's gotta boner"  :hihi:
