Title: The official "IRS" discussion.
Post by: dave-gnfnr2k on February 15, 2006, 10:10:07 PM
From another forum

Hey all,

There most definitely *IS* a better quality version of IRS out there. I just heard a small clip of it.

Now I don't know for sure if this is a really cleaned up copy of the version we have or truly a better rip, but it definitely sounded.. well, much better. In *my* opinion, given the limited listening i've done, it is a rip directly from the Trunk CD or the original DAT tape.

This file *WILL* be available for everyone shortly, all I ask is a bit of patience on everyone's part. saint_seiya isn't lying to you. (At least, it doesn't appear that he is) so all I ask is patience and understanding as we work out an effective way to make this happen.

I'll post an update as soon as I have one.

(no, I do not have the file at this time..its still in transit.. please don't PM and badger him or me.. we'll make this happen, ok?)

Dark said it was new, the version Dark is talking about won;t be the bloody roses remix as that has been around forever

Title: Re: The official "IRS" discussion.
Post by: SINSHINE on February 15, 2006, 10:51:29 PM
Wait...are we all talking about the same version of IRS here? Some people are saying there is a very clean version and others say it's just a little bit better than the original (which is not saying much).

The version that is being worked on is rumored from the CD itself.

Man this is great.
I'm glad this place is up and running again as well.
Everytime someone posts something about this it gets deleted at another forum.

I'll be checking in on this often.
Thanks for the update.

Anyone happen to know or have an estimated time frame?

Title: Re: The official "IRS" discussion.
Post by: smeagol2124 on February 15, 2006, 10:54:02 PM
Dark has to be talking about a new one, as he helped many a ssoul to the bloody roses remix last year.  I think others are confusing the situation, I do believe there is a clean version floating out there now.  Guess we just need patience...

madison just sent me this PM:

Yes.
But I'm waiting for the link to be posted.
There are two songs.
There's no point in talking about them until somebody posts the links....

i asked her "have you heard any of the new songs?"

this guy "wes" claims he got 3 studio tracks in 2004. so i'd say, well this is all based on assumption that they are real, they aren't necessarily the final versions. that could've been as much as two years ago.

Jesus , if theres two songs  yer looking at 6 megs each .. 12 puny megs. Does it take this long to upload them and post the links?!!

Then you have someone like Madision saying that yes she has heard them but makes no effort to share them?  ???

I was talking about a differen't version than most people here...most people here want the new "perfect" demo (like me), the one I was going to post was a better quality version of the first IRS...but my internet is going crazy and I can't.

The Trunk disc had 3 tracks + 3 instrumental versions of the same.
Yeah, I was gonna post this. I remember that either Piazza or Trump said at the time that the disc had 6 tracks, 3 songs with vocals (IRS was track # 1), and then 3 instrumental versions of the same 3 tracks.

For those who don't know the story, Piazza said that he just checked his mail one day and there was an envelope with a CD-R inside that simply said "GNR IRS". He was the occasional guest on Eddie Trunk's radio show in New York, so he brought the cd with him and they played IRS unannounced. The next day, Trunk was ordered to return the cd and not play it again, and the song was erased from the tapes of his show. It turns out that someone taped it off the radio that night, and a chunk of his recording was released online about a year ago (very poor sounding version). Now apparently we have the full studio version, which is not to say that the song has not been altered since then by the band.

Thanks to Dark and everyone else involved! I am downloading this track as we speak with my terribly slow dial-up connection and I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR IT!!!!!!!

Woo hoo, IRS starts now!

Definitely some sort of guerilla marketing campaign- that Slash is obviously a part of. Does he get some $$$ from a CD release at all?

Numerous Axl appearances and the interview
Slash blasting out the release date
Best leak yet of new material

DEFINITELY a coordinated effort which can only mean good news sometime this year.

i don't understand how slash would get any $$$$ from this new album unless he wrote part of one of the songs, which i highly doubt.  from my impressions the songs that will come out are mainly newer (written shortly before and since buckethead joined).

Wow, I can only imagine the ripple effect this is going to have.  I can't help but think this wasn't a planned leak...the song just sounds too raw and unpolished for Axl to give it the green light given how guarded hes been with the material.  If they were so quick to shut down Trunk's leak I can only imagine if hundreds of radio stations start playing this tomorrow.  Are we going to see TONS of lawsuits from Axl's camp?  Is this going to be their excuse to release CD now for fear of more leaks?

Holy Crap....its coming...its really coming isn't it?  Chinese Democracy is f'ing coming!! How the hell am I gonna sleep tonight :)

If any station starts to play it, give us the heads up....most radio stations have their station available via the net.

But, I'm wondering, why are you guys so intent on having regular radio play it?  I'm not slamming the idea...just wondering why the call to action.

This forum is going to get fucking busy once Europe wakes up!!!!!

If this wasnt an intentional leak id imagine the GnR camp are going to be a tad pissed. It will be interesting to see what Jarmo does when he wakes up, since this site is on Sanctuarys servers, i wonder what they will do?

cause it gets GNR "out there" again ... free promotion for anything else that may happen later this year. I wanna see what DJ's think of this song and the mainstream public , the non hardcore GNR fanbase.

SAUL!!!? Hey...? I've missed you.? Are you doing all right?

I'm doing pretty good. A ton of significant changes in my life/lifestyle but hey , shit happens over the course of a couple years right? Not to get off topic here but just so you know , when you were going through the "rough" stuff you had/have going on you were in my thoughts and prayers.

Much love!? :peace:

p.s. , I encourage all of you to do the same as mrice , burn this onto a cd-r and send it to your local radio stations. Dont even put a return add on yer envelope , just label the cd-r GNR-New Single-IRS

Tomorrow I'm gonna take copies to two local stations.

I agree, the buzz is gonna be great, esp for the mainstream......but I hope it doesn't get a bad reaction...it is a rough cut after all.  Sounds awesome to me, but compared to the first leak its just beyond amazing.  I am tempted myself to send it out to my local stations...but I don't want to get sued ;) haha

I'm not sure whats more exciting...the leak of the song or the repurcussions to follow!!!!!

Yeah, thats what I'm afraid of.  Can you imagine if the leak pisses off Axl to the point where he holds off on a CD release :(  People aren't going to understand its just a demo and has a lot of work left to be done to it.  This reminds me of the reviews of "the hulk" before all the special effects were done and it got PANNED before it even had a chance (was a pretty decent flick to me too).

Wow, I really can't wait to see what happens with all of this!!!  If this wasn't intentional....watch out b/c the SHIT IS GONNA HIT THE FAN.

that would be really pathetic, at this point Axl cant doubt the release of CD because of a demo leak. Its been too long and it would just be stupid. He has to release CD soon and this time it better be the f'n word!

Axl wouldnt be playing this stuff for strangers in NYC if he wasnt close.  Its too easy to bootleg, burn and rip music now.

I am sure Merck will shut this down but only because it makes business sense to do so. I believe there will be two GNR releases this year- GH2 with some new songs and ChiDem.

I don't think it makes good business sense to shut it down.  Not in today's music world.  Guns N' Roses is relatively unknown these days.  Axl needs this.

Good point...its kinda like a tease...send it out, let some people get their hands on it, and then taketh away!  Create demand for it...people will be emailing their friends to see if they got it, searching the web for places (like GNR forums perhaps??) that still have a link to it somewhere.....savvy...very savvy.

Also, I love how everyone is so upbeat and working together in a sense...this is f'ing awesome :)

Lol, how do we know this is not Navarro? Nobody knows how old this song is. Shit, it couldhave Duff on it for christ sakes.

Just kidding, I really like the guitars a lot. Wish it "rocked" a bit more but I know it's a demo. This sounds 10000% better than that shit quality thing we got a couple years ago.

Something I noticed: If you look at the info for 'IRS', it says "Year: 2004", and if you look at 'Better', it says "Year: ?". If they were from the same cd, wouldn't they have the same date?..? ???

This can't be the finished mixed song because the drumming doesn't fit the songs. Please don't tell me they're gonna use a drum machine for the album. IRS sounds great but the drumming just doesn't fit the song at all!! Sounds like Guns N Roses with Depeche Mode beats lol

it will be better tho hence this is just a demo!

That's a fine line. ? MyGNR didn't post the thread. ?The links to the files were distributed by the users. ? The files themselves were never posted on MyGNR and AFAIK the links to the files were never posted by the MyGNR staff. ? Ditto on HTGTH I believe.

Obviously in any forum where posts are not queued for moderation before posting there is always an element of risk and you're always in "clean-up" mode.

Really, what can management expect? ?They give us no info and every other month we've heard it's coming soon for the past few years. ?How can they expect us to respect their wishes when they don't respect us enough to have some simple form of communication. ?No other band out there has had to put up with the shit that the GN'R community has and we're the most loyal bar none.

I find it odd too, especially considering that IRS has been taboo to even mention on mygnr since the poor quality leak last year. ?Now, all of a sudden, it is not only "ok" to talk about it, but they allowed links to a studio quality version of the same song. ?Were the admins allowing it to be posted until they had *confirmation* that these tracks were indeed GNR?

It's obvious this is a higher quality version of the exact same song that was leaked last year...so if Management told them to remove all IRS leaks last year for a poor quality copy, why wouldn't the same hold true for a studio quality leak of the same song?

It doesn't make sense to me unless there is more to this leak that they are letting on.

I don't think it's really a question of "permission" or "allowing".

Neither here nor MyGNR queue posts for moderation before posting so users can post what the hell they want.

There is nothing that either forum could do to stop me posting a link to the entire Chi-Dem CD if I had it.  All they can do it try to manage the posts and contact the "officials" to get direction.

Maybe, but I was following mygnr closely for a couple hours leading up the the initial leak post. ? There were many, many threads started by people claiming to have heard the track. ?Madison (the admin) would, within, minutes delete the threads and tell people "Do not make posts claiming to have heard the song, unless you have a link to the actual song". ?Thus, almost encouraging people to post the links to download the song. ? ?They *could* have deleted the download links just as quickly as they were deleting the other posts that came prior to the leak if they wanted to.

Maybe the site admins are getting tired of the run-a-round too and they want to push managements buttons as far as they can. ?Who knows.

While the songs are the most important thing to me...I must say I am REALLY interested to know where these came from, who leaked them and how did they aquire the songs in the first place?  how long were they sitting on them?

My guess is we'll never really know.  Part of me feels like it was intentional (the timing just seems really coincidental) but then again it seems Axl is pretty guarded when it comes to any leaks.  I don't know.  Can anyone shed some light on to this? if not I'm just going to listen to these songs for the 1,000,000 time!  Rock on dudes.

IMO the new irs leak isnt realy a leak. Axl released it. every band has thos songs they do that dont make it to CD but there alwas there. i think IRS n Better are just that. in 10 years Axl could have and probly has mastered like 5 CDs worthy of the title end less classic. i mean look at To Pac. yeah hes a faggot rapper but hes been dead for ever and new matterial he worked on keeps surfaceing. i think that these songs are from the bottem of the list and Axl let it be aired once on the radio a few years ago to shake shit up a little cause he new he has somthing special and now he throws out a good quality verson just before the release of his album. hes recreating the excitment that was here 8 years ago. makeing people want GNR so bad that cant fucking live with out it. to me a leak of the same song twice seems thought out. and two songs at once is like a gift from god. most of the time things are to good to be true. i think that Axl is the kind of person that would do somthing just like this.

The most likely situation seems to be that these are the so-called Trunk songs. ? It was often speculated that they high quality versions might find their way onto the net someday. ? Yesterday was someday.

I don't think it's a "sneak" release by the band or anything like that.

Agree about the source.....but who leaked them? how did they get the CD to begin with? And why yesterday when the Trunk CD has been out for a few years now?  Why can't people send me CDs with leaked songs on them? haha.

Like I said, if I never know the answer to those ?s I won't lose any sleep, the fact that I have the songs is all I really care about, but it'd still be nice to know.

personally i don't give a fuck where they cam from as i have them now :)

who knows, the band may have let them be posted for a few hours, let as many people get there hands on them as possible, than issue the usual cease and desist orders and making people remove all links, etc........just to get a sense of the overall feedback of the songs

If anyone from the band, label, amanegement is reading this, they should see the overall feedback is very positive and there is a very large demand for new GnR material

Last night after midnight in the East Coast, there were about 100 people on this thread; not to mention the traffic on other GnR sites when this was happening

One of the guys who uploaded it had over 1500 downloads in less than 12 hours and it wasn't even on a GnR board

And as far as Merck not wanting any mention, link, etc of the leak; if the album would just be released, or a single from the album would just be released to tide fans over, or a statment of some kind with some kind of plans for the band, anicipated release date, etc., I could see fans being a bit more respectful of their wishes.  As it stands now, i'd say it's just too fucking bad it was leaked  :'(, it's only been 7 years since we heard original material (and O My God sucked) and over 14 years since we had an album of original material :'(

I don't know how you can make a final judgement yet. Since it is just a demo over the internet.

After listening both songs it?s quite clear that Buckethead is not playing on I.R.S , the amazing solo he played on the end of the old versi?n has been removed, the solo now sounds like Robin trying to emulate Bucket, anyway the song it?s superb , it?s a very different version from the  one  with poor sound that  surfaced  early on, so I like specially  the begining  with that  Blind Melon acoustic feeling , and the guitar driving end with Axl screaming his nuts.
The  clip of Better is to short to judge if Bucket?s parts  have been deleted, but we can?t find any of the freak effects that Buckethead used to add to the GNR songs , and the intro seemed a good place to add some of the funky vibe that he played so fine, but this song rocks so much , i can?t wait to hear the final version, because it finish right when starts what promised to be the best part of the song, and the best song   that any related GNR musician have recorded for the past 14 years.
Except for the drum machine, these songs must be  much more than demos , and the guitars and vocal tracks seem almost finished,  so they must be recorded or re-recorded after 2004 BH leaving.

It's not drums, it's beats.
When the "real" drums start to rock, it's great. Brain is very good.

Oh yeah, Brain is great! I love his job at Primus! I just don't know why a lot of fans don't like him!

Its a drum machine.  Bands don't use real drums until the final cuts b/c drums are the most expensive, tedious and time consuming part of recording...

If you play the first 20 seconds backwards you can clearly hear Axl singing " Axl is Dead"

if you play the last 20 seconds backwards you can hear "Axl's having fun with preety girls while davemanson posts shit"

 :hihi:

The funny thing is that this is the exact same fucking version of the song as was leaked before only "cleaner" .. god , I listened to each of them back to back a dozen times , the solo is EXACTLY the same.  ::)

It may seem like a non-issue now , but I'm sure when the album comes out , if they have erased his parts people will always comment "wonder what these solo's would sound like if buckets parts stayed?"

It's just the clear version of the Thrunk CD. So IT IS Buckethead on IRS.
However, nobody knows if he will be on the final studio album track.

That's not true at all...
If they could manage to record those 100 guitar tracks, I'm sure they could manage to record one drum track.

I don't think its a drum machine either... The beat changes throughout, and there are cymbals, and there are tom rolls during the heavy parts. Not something that could easily be programmed.

There ARE drum loops, but they're easily distinguishable from the real drums.

btw, this effectively means no TWAT or complete Better. Someone will rat the kid out and management will intimidate him.

But it's just a demo. Don't get worked up. In fact, it sounds very much like a demo; the mix isn't right and there is alot of ambient silence that has to be filled in and tightened.

Trust me, my best friend's brother has been in a rock band for 7 years now and everytime I hear demo's I think they are real drums, but they aren't.  Yes, Axl could afford to do it probably but I'm not sure he would waste the money just for drums.

A drum machine has the ability to do anything a real kit could do, sometimes better, so believe me when I say its probably a drum track...

What?  "IRS" intro sounds nothing like "The Rain Song" intro, unless you have a live version of the "The Rain Song" and they happened to play a different intro to it.

Check out the album version of it, and you'll see that there iare no similarities.  "IRS" has a mellow feel, but "The Rain Song" just completely takes you away.

this song rocks and i'm sure the final mix will be even better. Do you guys think when CD comes out they'll do what alot of bands do, and put out a limited number of copies that come with a disc of bonus material? axl did say they were working on 32 songs, 26 of which were done at that time. He said 13 on the cd, so that leaves alot of leftovers. i'm thinking maybe the best buy's will have a bonus cd with it.

I like this song a lot too!  We get an Axl screech, great guitar jams, axl screaming and singing with intensity...!  This song rocks pretty good for a demo.  Its different from the other leaks, more of a catchy little bit of a rocker.  I like all the songs so far, but catch myself listening to this more than the others!  Its easy and edgy, different from previous stuff as far as beat and stuff...

I still cant believe this is on the chart for a 2nd week. I love IRS but what I cant believe is that a leaked demo is charting.

Title: Re: The official "IRS" discussion.
Post by: whiny on March 11, 2006, 10:57:12 AM
(A) anyone else thinks that the guitar effects of "irs" on the left side sound terribly cheap and utterly contraproductive for the song; as if axl was afraid that it might sound too "normal", so he?s selecting effects by chance without getting the right feeling for what is needed... like "ah put that on that guitar, hey, this should run through some more effects... and hey, we could use a flanger on that guitar...! yeah i definitely think we need some keyboards and chemical brothers effects on silkworms, chris and dizzy, can you do that, just listen to a nin record or ask robin...you know make it sound more electronic and epic... just some more samples, ah try some of these..."

how likely is it, that this approach could ruin lot of other fine pieces of work on cd?  instead of giving the songs a traditional sound, it seems that axl is trying to attempt a cool-modern sound (which intention i appreciate) but fails, f.e. with irs, silkworms...
so the songs on cd could all sound a bit too "constructed", not as homogenic like nin for example, too overproduced like "oh my god". simply because axl is afraid to rick-rubin-like reduce things to its substance or core... (and i think that some of the new songs really have "substance")

(b) ok, now to the vocals on irs: the lines from "when you fist told me you were gone" til "seen it coming all along" just sound WRONG - meaning that rhytmically they don`t really go together with the guitar riff ... i mean it`s not out of time, but it`s not fitting too well with the rest of the band...

what do you say?

Title: Re: The official "IRS" discussion.
Post by: St_Jimmyuk on March 11, 2006, 11:12:28 AM
i dissagree and i think that the guitar works well in irs.  Axl knows what he is doing and isn't goign to release anything that he doesn't like or think will work.  he isn't going to release anysongs that the fans might not like now is he, unless this just backs up the argument for irs not actually being on CD

Title: Re: The official "IRS" discussion.
Post by: whiny on March 11, 2006, 11:35:56 AM
i made a mistake when i wrote that some vocals don`t really go together with the guitar riff ... i wrote "IT?S not out of time, but IT`s not fitting too well with the rest of the band"   "IT" does not relate to the the guitar riff but to the vocals - it should be the word "THEY" (instead of IT)...

sorry to confuse...

Some of these lyrics aren't correct. This is my interpretation of the lyrics

-------------------------------------------------------------
LOVE
Is it true?[/b] It's true
What they say
Of you?

Gonna call the President
Gonna call a Private Eye
Gonna get the IRS
Gonna need the FBI

There?s not anymore that I can do
All the reasons that you gave
I'll follow you
To when you plead the fifth, that?d be the end of time, its true <-- Not too sure whats there but it aint 'the fifth'.

Wouldn?t be the first time I've been wrong
Wouldn't be the last I should have known
Through all the rumors I can tell,
Some things didn't work so well

Well anyway, it feels the same

As when you first told me you were gone
So long ago, but I've been here long
To all the luck getting outta the debt
That's the truth and here's the worst yet
Wouldn't even matter the things I say
You made your mind up ad hoc anyway
There's no use now in not getting on
Could've seen it coming all along

Well it?s true...ooh...I had
My doubts[/b] with you <--- Sounds like a chicken so I think its "begun" or something that sounds like that.

Gonna call the President
Gonna call myself a Private Eye
Gonna need the IRS
Gonna get the FBI

Gonna make this a federal case
Gonna wave it right down in your face
Read it daily with your morning news
With a cheap hangover, and the headlines true now

[Finck Solo]

I been thinking you're too bad for my health,
I should've looked again then at somebody else
Feelin like I done way more than wrong
Feelin like I never gonna get ya outta this song
Feelin like I'm just too tired to care
Feelin like I done more than my share
Could it be the weight[/b] that I've carried on <--- That doesn't actually make sense, I'm pretty sure its "Way"
Like a broken record for so long

And I do
Ooh, oh.
I'm Gonna call the President,
I'm gonna call a private eye
Gonna get the IRS,
Gonna need myself the FBI.

Ooh, what shall I do
If I gave my heart to you
It's such a crime you know it?s true

[Bucket solo]

Gonna call the president
Gonna need myself a private eye
Gonna need the IRS
Gonna get the FBI

Gonna make it a federal case
Gonna wave it right down in your face,
Read it daily with your morning news
With a cheap hangover, and the headlines true

There's not anymore that I can do
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know I'm probably wrong with most of these but this is how I see the lyrics. Feel free to make any corrections or ask any questions

I was actually toying with the notion that it could be way instead of weight also.  Nevertheless, I think weight works with the song too because it can signify a burden, i.e. a burden weighing you down.  Way that and weight that would be (and are) hard to distinguish from each other, so either could be right. :)

From the sound of it, it seems to be a song about something like writer's block.
I know Axl is reported to have said it was about tax. ::)

Assuming it was proceeded along the lines of the demo leaked earlier (in march?)
I think this song will make a "stairway to heaven" of the 21st century.

True the zep sound is pretty dated but it's a monumental piece in Rock.
With all antiquated factors in it, the music is still beautiful, IMO.

Stairway to Heaven is fantastic, a true classic. I thought you were saying that IRS had the potential to be the same.

Thats why i thought you were mad mate. It couldnt even come remotely close to Zep even at their worst.

At their worst? Do you know what their worst is? ::)

I say it again.
Providing it has been proceeded along the lines of the demo leaked in march,
IRS will be a modern day "stairway".  The song will represent the pinnacle of hard rock.
I don't know how my posts can be taken otherwise.

I thought you meant stairway was not that good, which would be understandable as the song sounds pass?, sometimes too gaudy and too self intoxicated unlike IRS. None of zep member names it as their best work. Still it's a beautiful piece none the less. A monument of hard rock in the last century.

I'd say someone who HOPES this song won't be huge still calling themselves a GNR fan is very very mad.

Great job man!? There must still be some errors but these lyrics are getting close.

For what it is worth (the not sure part), this is the way I have heard it since the first few times I tried figuring out the lyrics.? "Through all the emotions and love that it takes"

BTW, does anyone know if Axl has been singing the end "There's not anymore that I can do" in that different key like RIR at all the concerts?? I'm starting to like the way he ends the song in that key better than the demos.

you have fairly high hopes for this song there  :hihi:

although I find Stairway a little lame these days, youre right in that it is an almost unparalled rock classic that perhaps only Bohemiam Rhapsody and SCOM can rival.

IRS in that league? mmm... sorry, I dont rate it quite that highly up the totem pole. We shall see how the public receive it if its released as a single I guess. To truly gauge its impact though, we would need to have this discussion 15 -20 yrs after its release

After sifting through all these various demo versions, live versions, hearing it live myself, etc., I've come up with this very, very loose interpretation. A lot of what I hear doesn't really make a ton of sense, oh well:

'Love, oh oh,
is it true?
What they say of you?

Gonna call the President,
gonna call with the private eye,
gonna get the IRS,
gonna need the FBI,
there's not anymore that I can do,

all the reasons that you gave,
I'd follow you,
to when you plead and if that'd be the end of time it's true,
wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong,
wouldn't be the last I'm sure I've gone
through all the rumors I can tell,
some things didn't work so well,

well anyway it feels the same,
as when you first told me you were gone,
so long ago but I still held on,
through all the motions and I'm in this debt,
and that's the truth now here's the worse yet,
wouldn't even matter, the things that I say,
you bend your mind I'll be gone anyway,
and there's no use knowing that you're done off,
you'd have seen if comin' all along.

well it's true, oh.
I had, but that was you, oh oh.

gonna call the President,
gonna call myself a private eye,
gonn need the IRS,
gonna get the FBI.

Gonna make this a federal case,
gonna wave it right back out in your face,
read about it with your morning news
with a sweet hangover and the headlines, too now.

I see you think I'm doin' this all for my health,
I should've looked again then at somebody else,
feelin' like I've done way more than wrong,
feelin' like I'm living inside of this song,
feelin' like I'm just too tired to care,
feelin' like I've done more than my share,
could it be the way that I've carried on,
like a broke record for so long?
Am I doomed?

Gonna call the President,
gonna call a private eye,
gonna get the IRS,
gonna need myself the FBI.

Oh, what shall I do?
If I gave my heart freely,
it's like a crime you know it's true!

Gonna call the President,
gonna get myself a private eye,
ooh gonna need the IRS,
gonna get the IRS.

Gonna make it a federal case,
gonna wave it right back out in your face,
re-invent it with your morning news with
a sweet hangover and your headlines, too
It's not anymore that I can do...'

Okay, so I never liked IRS... it was my least favorite of all the new songs (yes, even OMG and Silkworms!)...
But then I finally got around to downloading an mp3 of IRS from the Rock in Rio Lisbon Portugal show, and my opinion has changed dramatically.  If you haven't listened to it yet, I highly recommend that you find it.  First of all, Axl's vocals are really low in the mix, but that's good, because you can really hear the instruments.  Tommy's bass is easy to pick out for a change, which is great.  One of the keyboard players is really loud in the mix.  I think its Chris, and what he is playing reminds me of Rammstein, its more of a keyboard effect that really has a dark emotional undercurrent.  There is a really nice acoustic guitar about halfway through, and then during the last few choruses, the keyboard and rhythm guitar are playing the same notes and it sounds very sinister and creepy.  The music really matches the mood of the song... this guy is teetering on the edge of sanity really.  He's beyond sad, and into revenge territory maybe.  The music really impressed me and brought a whole new appreciation to the song.  I really, REALLY hope the band continues to push the song in a darker direction musically for the album.

Am i the only one with the IRS feaver?

Ok based on that amazing point youve made, why not pick ANY song out there at the moment and say that in 20 years time  it may just have the impact of Stairway to Heaven.

Good luck with your clairvoyance Nostradamus.

Because to say that this one out of the million songs that will have been released in 20 yrs time without even having a proper listen, may not have the impact of Stairway to Heaven would be far toughier.  :hihi:

Good luck to you too. You don't have to be an alchemist to tell gold is gold. Just see the glitter. :smoking:

Dave,

it sounds like "So long ago, but I still held on" and not "So long ago, but I've been here long"

I always thought so too.? It sounds like "So long ago, but I've still held on, through all the bullshit that I've had to take"

I agree with Shotgunblues1978. ?Thanks to everyone for deciphering most of this. ?The song keeps getting better. ?Does everyone still remember trying to figure out the lyrics to the Bloody Roses version? ?The terrible sound quality made it sound like an echo from hell! ?(a beautifully tempting sound from hell! ?: ok:)

I can't believe we're still arguing about these lyrics!

Quote
To all the emotions and love that it takes(?)

I have been certain that it was "emotions" for a very long time. The rest is definitely harder to decipher. Earlier I had "To all the emotions that I've had to take" but "and love that it takes" may be right. And perhaps the line starts with through? "Through all the emotions and love that it takes"

Quote
You made your mind up and gone anyway

I will still argue strongly that this is "You made your mind up ad hoc anyway". I haven't seen anything else that fits better.

Quote
With a sweet hangover, and the headlines true now

That damn word is hard to make out, it sounds like 'sweet' but that just doesn't fit the line. I'm still going with "cheap" until Uncle Axl clears this up.

Quote
I feel your doing this all for my health

Someone in the lyrics thread came up with "I bet you think I'm doing this all for my health" and I am 99% convinced this is correct. I can hear him say it.

Quote
There's no use now in dragging it on

"There's no use now in not gettin' on". This is what I hear in both the studio and live version.

It's "Through all the motions, love has stayed". It makes sense in the context of the song, when you consider that the next line is... "And that's the truth, and here's the worst yet."

Quote
I will still argue strongly that this is "You made your mind up ad hoc anyway". I haven't seen anything else that fits better.
..."You made your mind up, and your heart anyway".

Yeah, that's the best interpretation I've heard.

Listening to this song with a good pair of headphones is just killer. This tune is just unreal, and in my opinion tops the bands new material.

It is really arty, the structure, the time signature, the vocal delivery, it just screams something modern and new.

I can't praise this song enough, even if it is one of those songs that it takes awhile to "get". I get it like nobodys business.

IRS is a great song, and I am highly anticipating hearing a finished version of the song. I am so glad they play it on tour.

well that is all.

IRS is a very nice song from what we've heard on the leak, but the IRS version performed at Rock Am Ring is KILLER; OUTSTANDING. Bumblefoot REALLY does his job.

Axl's voice at the end of the track (IRS-RAR) sounds like regan/satan in ''The Exorcist'', that voice reminds me of his voice in Rock In Rio II. Killer, the best track of that DVD.

yes dude, IRS is an Incredible Song, even when it is the weakest leaked track of the four.

Yes, IRS is an Incredibly Rockin' Song... ?But then, so are most GNR songs. ? :hihi:

Lyrically I find it a bit weak in that it's kind of silly to consider calling the IRS or the FBI (like they'll do anything for you if you do ::)), but the guitar during the verses puts me in mind of Tony Iommi/(old) Black Sabbath, and I just love that! ?

The Inland invasion sound board version is the best Ive heard this song aside from actually being at the Joint in Sept. Vocally he does a great job, pulls off every line like it was the studio and even digs down to get that gutteral, primal sound out of his throte on the line "gonna wave it right down in your face" which is just awsome.  This is my favorite new Guns song. :peace:

The only thing that's cheesy is the actual hook ("Gonna get the IRS..." etc.). The lyrics for the rest of the song are pretty impressive.

Through all the motions: the love and the sex
That's the truth, here's the worst yet
Wouldn't be the amount of the things that I say
You made your mind up and gone on your way

I like that bit.

Woudn't even matter to me anyway
You've made your mind up and gone anyway

I agree, those parts are pretty ok, but the chorus is horrible, and it gets repeated over and over again. Lord, give me strength.

Another thing, that guitar you hear in the left speaker at the beginning of the song fucking rocks. Some spaced shit going on there. I only hear it with headphones though.

The lyrics are pretty poor, but its a pretty good song. I wish they would put a proper bad-ass effect on the guitars to make it sound even more hard-metal.

"What shall I do, if I, gave my heart to you"

What relevance does that have to the IRS exactly?

I was never sure exactly what he was saying, but after comparing the monitor mix and Rock am Ring and Inland Invasion certain parts become very clear. (Especially Download Festival.) It's definitely what I posted, I'm almost positive. If I'm wrong I shall slap myself raw on the face.  :-\

And yeah, the guitar in the beginning is awesome. I love the Led Zeppelin vibe there - it's like Led Zep with a modern twist. The crunchy guitar riffs are cool too. It needs work, though, because the demo sounds a bit flat at times - the live version is much better.

It's not actually about the IRS. It's about breaking up. (Another love song.) That's why I think the main chorus is so stupid. It's basically a guy expressing his insecurities - he's going to get the FBI and private eye to follow her around and try to validate his suspicions. It would be cool if he left out the IRS, because that would mean he's mad at her for buying too much and not writing off her taxes properly?  ???

the problem with irs is that the song is way too repetitive, as some of you have metioned... especially because the song is pretty long as well and the hookline seems to get on ones nerves pretty soon (does it?).
pro:
what i think is cool about the live versions is that the poor guitar effects (from the demo) are gone and a funky wah-wah phrase has been added; all in all it sounds more organic now and has more of a dynamic character (just listen to the vocals at rock am ring); especially the guitar parts during the verses are pretty powerfull; i like that a lot; the new finck solo is also a huge plus;

conclusio:
irs is ok, but doesn't seem t o be a big gun (hopefully); nevertheless - with a cool production - it but may fit in perfectly in the "flow" of the chinese democracy album.

Im really starting to like this song now that I've heard it live...I always thaught it was one of the weaker new songs but man its really starting to grow on me....These are some of the best lyrics Axl has sang lately:

As when you first told me you were gone
So long ago, but I still held on
To all the luck getting outta the debt
That's the truth and here's the worst yet
Wouldn't even matter the things that I say
You made your mind up ad hoc anyway

There's no use now in not dragging it on
Should've seen it coming all along

Private-Eye:? Again, watches you.

Does anyone else get the feeling that this will be the most "Metal" GNR album?  I hear the guitar/bass work on IRS, especially at the 3:15 mark, and in other songs, and it has a very metal feel to it (and, by metal, I DON'T mean bluesy, aggressive hard rock, that is often confused with metal).  I'm not arguing the whole album's metal...but some of the leaks have that feel.  IRS, Chinese Democracy, parts of Better.  Just a thought.

like Axl said in .. Hmm some years ago.. it will be a melting pot. Im sure there will be alot of Metal type of songs.. The song mentioned by Bach was almost Doom Metal, so why not! I think the middle part of Better sounds metal too.. And Oh My God is pretty metal

Does anyone else get the feeling that this will be the most "Metal" GNR album?? I hear the guitar/bass work on IRS, especially at the 3:15 mark, and in other songs, and it has a very metal feel to it (and, by metal, I DON'T mean bluesy, aggressive hard rock, that is often confused with metal).? I'm not arguing the whole album's metal...but some of the leaks have that feel.? IRS, Chinese Democracy, parts of Better.? Just a thought.?

Indeed!  Thanks for making a stand that aggressive hard rock / bluesy hard rock isn't metal, btw =).

I do hear that "metalness" in IRS, and Chinese Democracy.  A lot to do with the rythm section.  Kind of menacing.  Especially the doom metal comment... seems that between that and The Blues, this will be a diverse sounding record.  (Maybe!).  I know IRS is a pretty diverse song... depending on what the final version is.

IRS is an incredible live song

The thing I really like about IRS is that it has this subtle complexity to it, where it sounds simple but if you listen really closely, there's a bunch of different layers.  I think the polished final cut is going to kick some serious ass.  I also like that they've added the Robin solo from the 1999 demo back into the song.  The solos are all cool, they all compliment each other, with Robin's heavier solo, then the soft solo, then the shred solo at the end.  Also Axl's vocal melodies are awesome.  Overall it's just a really well written song, and it ages well

The lyrics are pretty poor, but its a pretty good song. I wish they would put a proper bad-ass effect on the guitars to make it sound even more hard-metal.

"What shall I do, if I, gave my heart to you"

What relevance does that have to the IRS exactly?

It relates to the "gonna make it a federal case" part.  "Make it a federal case" is a saying, not literal, meaning making a huge fucking deal over something.  The chorus is not about the IRS or FBI, it's an exagerration about how he can't trust this broad so he's going to go to excessive lengths to expose her as a fraud.  Hence, getting the IRS and FBI to investigate her

I love how they're playing IRS live with the additional solo by Robin. There was a great version of IRS up on youtube from The Gibson Amphitheater but it looks like it's been removed. Anyway, I hope it sounds like how GnR is playing it now on the album. Of all the new songs GnR has played I would say that IRS sounds the best live.

the song is kinda two- faced... studio/live intro imo is horrible...live version has alot of dynamics which the song needs and makes the song real good. studio version is blah... and doesn't really do anything for me

Which version are you talking about? The really shitty spliced one, or the slower one from '99?

I kind of hope that the final studio version sounds similar to the 99' demo we have.

Very funky laid back kind of groove. I prefer this to the newer live versions.

Maybe the studio cut will be suprisingly different than both.

I like the funky guitar riff during the chorus' in the '99 version.  That should def. be on the album version
