Title: [FAKE] GN'R signing at Chicago's Virgin Megastore - this was a hoax
Post by: shredsolo on November 15, 2006, 04:57:10 AM
a guy on another forum has posted a picrure which looks official within the chicago virgin megastores about GNR playing and signing there on the 28th of november

Taken from albumaday.net:

Quote
Rumors have recently been circulating that Guns N Roses long awaited album ?Chinese Democracy? will finally be released on the 28th of November.   A post on the Guns N Roses message board chinesedemocracy.com is as follows:

First off, I?m not a huge fan but when googling Guns N? Roses board this came up and these posts look recent so I wanted to tip off some fans for something in the works they will love.

I work at the Virgin Megastore Chicago ?N. Michigan Ave.? and for the past few weeks the manager and some of our higher ups have been in a hush mode about some in-store we have to be ready for on Nov. 28th. Tonight some of us were told that it is confirmed and it will be the ?new? Guns N? Roses for the release of the new album that day. They also said Axl is more than likely not going to be here but ?everyone else?, not sure what that means, will be to sign the new album. I know our manager is still pushing to have them do a performance but I think that would come down to Axl being there, no? I figure this will give you guys a heads up of a few days before it becomes major news.

What we were told so far:
-Lining up will only be allowed starting after 6am (this is a Chicago thing)
-First 500 people are the only ones ?guaranteed?
-One copy signed per person but they may purchase as many as they would like
-No other items will be signed
-No cameras or cellphone cameras will be allowed when nearing the band (this is a common rule that we impose for larger acts)

Judging by some of the posts on here you guys may call crap or whatever on my post but please do not get me fired and keep this to yourselves. We still have to deny everything until later next week at this point.

    Thanks

Over the last year Axl Rose and the Guns N Roses management have repeatedly stated that Chinese Democracy will be released before the end of the year.  With only a few weeks left in the year, time is running out.  The 28th sounds like a logical choice given the fact that is the busiest shopping weekend of the year.  One thing is for sure? I will believe it when I see it!

Thanks! But now I'm fucking, fucking, fucking scared 'cause couple of nights ago I saw a dream of a record that was grey and it had some kind of a title on an orange background with some centered bold text under it, and it was packed in a large paper case so it looked JUST like that piece of paper in the bigger photo. Jesus.

it seems fishy to me. ?If it was so secret, why post a bulliten that can get copied and put on the internet? ?If its so secret, they wouldnt make the damn notice, they would just not talk about it, especially 2 weeks beforehand. Its fake.

I don't know.

Looks like a cool photoshop to me.

If the people who work at some store, are not supposed to talk about something, the store's manager would gather them all, and tell them in person.

Not with some small paper on a wall noone will notice.

I hope I'm wrong though.

If it was faked by me I would've written "signing the new C.D. album".

Take it with a grain of salt! #1 this could easily be printed off on someones computer, and placed in a dorm hall or work place to make it look legit. #2 if they want this to be so damn secretive then why post it on the cork board? Come on this is screaming BULL-SHIT. I have been around long enough to not believe anything until the day you walk into the record store and see Chinese for yourself.

Looks like a cool photoshop to me.

I think its legit because the text isnt perfectly horizontal.. therefore to me it is indeed a picture of a sign.. rather than a sign thats been created in photoshop.

If the text was perfectly level then it would be unlikely someone took a pic of it that perfectly lined up....

I think its real....

I want so much to believe it's true, but I can't help wondering: Why would this guy go in so much trouble to proove himself? I mean, he has like 7 posts on cd.com about the Virgin thing only and he's not even familiar with the band.  :-\

Wow, that other Guns N' Roses board really took off with that info. I guess whoever the band is they have some die hard fans.
http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=39365.msg791816#msg791816

I appreciate the info, but doesn't he have anything else to do? It just makes me suspicious.

I agree, but on that same note why would they go to all this trouble to make a fake??

I think almost ALL of this solid evidence is created by the band as part of the promotional campaign to further enchance the mystique of Chinese Democracy.

I think the 3 songs we got were leaked on purpose, the Harley ad was leaked on purpose, the "incident" with Del James's letter was on purpose, as well as the Rolling Stone article talking about "Sorry" and how many Tuesdays are left.

This picture at the Virgin Megastore might be fake, but if it's real, then I think it's been set up by management to get the GNR community buzzing even more than usual.

It's kind of like those people who say the government has special people who browse messageboards and things whenever there's a big news story that might blow the lid of a conspiracy.  They send in people to post all kinds of crazy rumors, maybe even some true things, and then no one knows what to believe.  Of course, I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything like that, but I'm just saying that I believe this to be a similar situation.

All of these release dates that have some pretty credible stories behind them are for the most part injected into this community by the band's management.  It's the perfect way to promote an album without openly promoting it.  It's also a good way to cover up any leaked inforrmation.

Suppose someone says "The release date is Demember 12th" and management shits their pants because it's true.  So, they send in someone with this whole story of the Virgin Megastore signing, and now no one knows what to believe.  Get it?  Or perhaps the Virgin thing is real, but thanks to all these other credible rumors (and I call them that for lack of a better word) no one knows what to believe.,

Think about this guys. ?

1. ?If this is supposed to be a surprise and no one is supposed to talk about it, how would anyone in Chicago know to show up at 6AM for the signing. ?In other words, if they don't advertise it, how would people know to even go?

2. ?Without Axl, who (besides a few fanatics here that live in Chicago) would care about getting the album signed by the hired guns? ?

This is obviously not true.

I lived in Chicago for awhile, have alot of friends there, and will be at the show on the 27th.  I'll monitor this situation through friends - and if I hear it's for real, I'll certainly be staying in Chicago for 12 hours or so longer than I planned.

it would be the same as that guy about 4 years ago selling the fake tickets to the GnR in Poland show. He had bilboards and flyers all printed up and for tickets you had to call his cell phone number..

Like a fake louie vitton bag in china town, this could really get people in trouble while using the logo of virgin, this better be real, if people are hurt then someone will be to blame.  I have a feeling those nerds wont be fighting mad with light sabres either.  I personally think as well as some of you that this is publicity aka intentional leaks by management to get the ball running and hopefully for the belated album release.  If not call me a sheep and sheer my ass, cause dammit I just need a shepherd. Well, who's to say there wasn't a staff meeting about it and the manager posted the notice.  A lot of times you've gotta get things in writing so that employees understand the consequences of their actions.  Not saying that I believe it's true, but if I ran a record store, I'd tell my staff not to divulge any information and I would also post a notice.

That's not what puts me off. If all the employees have been told already this could just be an informative note they put up so that people can't say oh, I don't know that was secret etc. What is troubling though is the articulation used. Doesn't really strike me as something a manager would write. Then again, if David Brent can hold a job.......

You'd think that.  And then you'd think back to:

1) Latigo Hammers
2) Gnfr
3) Danny's magic fax machine
4) the, literally, hundreds of posters who have been caught outright lying (and been banned) on these boards about CD
5) Fake song lyrics
6) "My favorite pillow"-gate

And you realize that the "bored idiot" scenario isn't as far left field as you'd like to think. The longer you're around these boards, the more you see that validates that scenario.  I'm not saying this is definitely fake (it probably is, IMHO), or saying the OP is, for certain, a "bored idiot", but...I certainly won't rule out that possibility, based on past history.

IMHO, any notice or memo on the subject would be much more vague.  The specifics would be handled via meeting with the staff and, possibly, follow up correspondance via their pay packet.  IF I were to post a notice about a "secret event", I certainly wouldn't put the specifics of that event in an easily viewable, easily transportable notice on a bulletin board in a breakroom.

Whilst I think its A FAKE students often work in music shops as a part-time and often don't give a damm about getting the big heave ho or are even already leaving.  Managers frequently don't think about this when they give staff meetings either. So it could be sloppy management but I don't think so.

Say the store has 30 employees.  They hold a meeting and then give each employee a reminder with their paycheck.  That's 30 chances that someone will toss the reminder out the window - and someone on the street finds it - chicago radio gets it, and it's all blown.

If I were the manager of this store, I would go about it the way this is going down - but I would not have said anything about GNR on that bulletin board.  Only something along the lines of "No one is to talk about the instore performance on the 28th" Rather than "No one is to talk about the Guns N' Roses performance on the 28th".

I'm riding the fence on this one, but I've got friends in Chi-Town watching out for me, to let me know if I need to stay in town after the show or not.

Dead right dude, The staff would be put onto some kind of notice that an event was being planned and possibly organise a late shift.? No record store manager would wantonly make it so easy for this to leak out if true.? With the litigatation culture as it is, who would really break an embargo for the sake of being the first and risk their livelyhood in the process

For most payroll services (including every big box retailer I know of) you can put a reminder notice directly on the pay stub, itself.  If they're that careless with their paystubs...there's more to worry about than just the reminder getting out to area radio stations...they'd need to have shared, or been careless with, their personal information.

Again, the reminder via pay packet would be vague, with the specifics being addressed in a meeting.

I know that's the way Wal-mart, Target, Toys R us, Best Buy, and some other big box retailers have handled "special event" information with empolyees before....but I've also never seen a large store handle what would be an "appearance" of this magnitude before either.  But no matter how you slice it, this "notice" doesn't really seem to be the likely way they'd handle things.

You know this is probably posted by the manager at the store. He probably didn't meet his quota ?for the month and is hoping for some quick sales by tricking some people to the store so he can keep his job.

well if this is really true... this was going to be like... a surprise or something right?... so if, again this is true, anyone from gnr management can come here or to other boards and check this out and then cancel it or something... and we don?t want it, do we?

It doesn't say anywhere on it that they'll sign Chinese Democracy. It says "signing". You know, GNR happens to have plenty of things to be signed.

I checked the tour dates, and they're doing Milwaukee on the 29th.  Milwaukee, WI is only about 2 hours away from Chicago - and knowing Axl, he's almost certain to stay in the Windy City instead of heading straight up to Wisconson to sit for two days.

It wouldn't say "CST" (central standard time) and wouldn't say "For your eyes only," like some old cheezy Shena Easton song.

EVERYONE PLEASE LISTEN UP NOW

This is a total hoax. I have called Virgin in Chicago and I asked, "Is there going to be an in-store performace and signing there on November 28th" She repeated the question to me to make sure sure heard the question correctly.....told me to hold......put me on hold for about 30 seconds...returned and said squarly and matter of factly, "No." I repeated "So there is no in-store performance or signing on November 28th??" She replied "No." I said, "Thank you" and she said "Your welcome." and we hung up. I believe that she had no knowledge of this.......this does not mean that she did not know something might happen on that day...but I do believe based upon this brief conversation that nothing will happen at Virgin Megastore in Chicago on this date. I think the person who started this hoax if it turns out to be just that should be skinned alive!! : ok:
