Title: The Killers
Post by: Leah_RocketQueen on September 19, 2004, 12:05:49 PM
Is it just me, or does that song almost sound like the whole thing is done digitally. The only thing I can hear that sounds like a rock band is bass, drums and the singer. WHERE IS THE GUITAR??? There are way too many sound effect things. :nervous:

I don't think there are too many... I think it fits the song perfectly.

I think the song is more Disco inspired than anything, imo.

I only heard this for the first time a few weeks back along with Mr.Brightside and i think this is great stuff i am definately going to pick up the record.  When i have heard them in rock clubs they always play their stuff on the indie floor so maybe they are Indie/Disco/Rock???

"Somebody Told Me" has a  nice beat and melody, but i CANNOT STAND THE LYRICS!! absolutely terrible, "somebody told me that you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that i had in febuary..." ???? so bad. On the other hand, i love "Mr. Brightside," great song, and with better lyrics  : ok:

I was really surprised when it came out and it was all over rock radio around here. It sounds like dance music to me. Not rock n roll.

Sounds very retro to me, I like it a lot. Don't know if I'd call it rock though.

The band is amazing, I saw them live at the Kool Haus in toronto. And met them at edge 102 on Yonge St. If I knew how to upload pictures I would upload mine with the lead singer Brandon Flowers and the drummer.

His favorite song ever is November Rain.

Anyhow a very awesome band live.

I think the song is shit.  I always thought the Killers were supposed to be a rock n roll band until I heard this.  Sounds like Busted gone disco.

Title: Re: The Killers

They are referred to as synth pop. I am not usually into that kind of music but the album isn't that bad at all.

i don't mind the song... and i don't mind the killers

it's not rock at all though... so it confuses me when they play it on scuzz n kerrang...
sounds more discoy to me... kinda reminds me of that blur song... girls + boys... that's a discoy song from a supposedly rock band

Title: Re: The Killers
Post by: SLCPUNK on December 26, 2004, 10:01:00 PM
Their album reminds me of a lot of different bands. U2, the Cure, the Smiths, lots of retro influence on it for sure. The album is pretty eclectic IMO.

I absolutely love "Mr Brightside"

this song has been stuck in my head for awhile and i cant stop listening to it

I love this band, they sound very different and their singer is pretty cool.

The Killers grows on you after a few listens. It has a nice retro sound without getting too nostalgic.

I haven't been able to get over the first 5 songs on their album... catchy as hell.  I hear the rest of the album is supposed to be, well, not so good.  I'm willing to give it a few listens though.

I find it strange that people are so into Mr. Brightside... I'm pretty sure it was released as a single twice, before and after "Somebody Told Me" (which I think is a better song), but it never caught on the first time.

I got the album on an impluse buy and have listened to it a grand total of 3 times :(
It ok as background music but I'd download it first and see if you like it, you get bored of the radio songs quickly as they are a bit overplayed...

it all sounds the same and gets very boring very quickly. they've managed to fool a lot of people by playing that one song over and over but they're nothing. Instantly likeable, and almost as quickly forgettable.

Title: Re: The Killers
Post by: loretian on July 29, 2005, 06:01:11 PM
I think they're decent.  I bought their cd on a whim, just cause I heard some noise about them, having never heard any of their songs.  The songs did grow on me a bit, and there's a couple where they actually do some pretty creative, original things in them (track 6 or 7 and the last track).  For the most part, though, I'd agree - it's mediocre and forgettable.

Title: Re: The Killers
Post by: Eazy E on July 29, 2005, 08:24:50 PM
I couldn't decide whether I really liked them or found them annoying.  I'd find myself listening to them every once in awhile and eventually picked up the CD (about a year after they first released "Mr. Brightside")... It's definetaly catchy stuff, but I think I need to be in the mood.  Anyways, my buddy kept the disc after 2-4 camping... but I still want it back.  So I guess that means I think it's "alright".  Great if you're in the mood, but DON'T overplay it.

I loved Mr. Brightside, All These Things I've Done and Smile Like You Mean It. But why are they releasing a new album so fast?? Wasn't the previous one released like last year?

I'm not complaining or anything, maybe I'm not used to fast releases with the other bands I like lol.

"Hot Fuss" was out in 2004.  I think they wrote most of the new album while touring, and were ready to move in some different directions.   Given how different the first single sounds - and I  mean that in a good way - I'm glad they're getting new material out so soon...

I suppose two years between albums is pretty fast, but they're far from alone in that respect.  Many bands can or try to follow up a hit album rather quickly, but it's typically more of the same, and usually a bit worse.

What I think *is* rare is to show change like they have on "Young."  Personally, I will be surprised if they're creative, prolific, and ambitious enough to keep new material coming out at such a pace that actually builds upon previous efforts, rather than simlply mimicing past success.  Here's hoping, though.   Looking forward to "Sam's Town..."

I heard the new single too.. and I really like it. I was a fan of their first album, I still think Mr. Brightside is a great song

for those who said it sounds like Springsteen.. well, it's supposed to sound like it cuz Brandon inspired a lot from him for this new album, cuz some time between the end of their tour last year and the recording of the album he became a huge fan of the boss hehe :hihi:

someone that listened to their album in a listening party said the best song is Read My Mind which also happens to be one of Brandon's favorites, so look out for it when the album hits the stores in October

one last thing, The Killers are scheduled to be performing at the VMAs this year (they were at the VMAs last year also), so look out for that as well : ok: they will play their new single, When You Were Young and the video for it should be in rotation at MTV for around that time too.. they filmed it in Mexico

I think it's great to see all the positive comments for the Killers.  They seem to get a lot of shit from the "diehard" rock n rollers who think they're crap, but I think they do actually put decent music out.  Hot Fuss was my favorite album of 2004 and a good part of 2005.  I'm 25 and into more harder stuff, but I really like the album.  I also like the b-sides and stuff that weren't released like "Under The Gun" and their cover of Morrissey's "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself" which I think is better than the original.  The new album should be great and so far I'm very pleased with it.  Maybe they'll shed some of those teeny bopper fans who support the band because "BRANDON IZ KEWL AND CUTE" and such like that.  I think the Killers will be around for a while thank god.  Probably the best new band out there if you ask me.

I agree that The Killers seem to separate themselves from all the other crappy bands out there today... and I hope they keep on doing good music and get to be around for a long time, I think they can do it, definitely

I also like their cover of Morrisey's song and the cover they did live of Moonage Daydream by Bowie is pretty good too : ok:

Killers rock.

Their new stuff reminds me so much of Springsteen its untrue. But all my friends say i'm crazy so i guess i am.

Agreed.  I really enjoyed 4-5 songs on "Hot Fuss," but didn't take to the rest of it at all.  I'm hoping that "Sam's  Town" will be more...consistent, I guess, and not stray too far from the sound of "Young..."

I saw them live on the NME (oh the shame - its my housemates fault) tour 2004 and they were just starting to make waves. A then unknown band called The Kaiser Chiefs opened a 4 line-up bill.

I have never seen such a totally mental crowd in all my life. I had to escape during Brightside - I genuinly think I could have been crushed to death.

I think the new song is a grower.

Expect them to be everywhere and just about the biggest thing going when this new album drops.
Anywhere online to preview the rest of the album?

I thought their performance was by far the best the show had to offer.  By the time you take out all the rap, R & B, and dance acts, though, there's not much left in terms of competition.  The just seemed like genuinely good performers, not overly dramatic (MCR), and not more enjoyable to watch than others (All-American Rejects).  I'm really looking forward to Sam's Town next month...

not having a go but just letting you know

The common sense I was referring to had absolutely nothing to do with whether I was talking to the person right before me (which I wasn't) or the person who started the thread REQUESTING what I provided. The common sense was that if you had to ask that question to yourself, why not just download it and FIND out if it's a live version or not? Sorry for the confusion but I still think your question was dumb considering I provided a link to download the song. That should have been enough in and of itself for you to figure out what version it was simply by downloading and listening to it. And another thing. I do believe I mentioned recording it from Rhapsody. I guess some of y'all aren't into digital music, but Rhapsody is a subscription music service that lets you listen to as much music as you want. I seriously doubt Rhapsody has a single live performance from MTV in their entire database, so I also doubt that they would have a VMA performance so soon after it happened. Sorry again for the confusion though.

I agree...it *is* a  great song, and it's gotten me rather anxious to buy the album next month.  I thought the first album was strong, but only really liked about half the songs - I'm still surprised that "Jenny was a friend of mine," the first track, never was a single.  After their VMA performance - the only one worth watching, I thought - I'm looking forward to the album and tour.  Funny, as they're a band I never imagined myself liking based on their first "hit..."

Yeah same here......when they first came out to radio with "Somebody Told Me".......I wasn't into it.? I still to this day don't like that song, but when I heard "Smile Like You Mean It" from a friend's ipod then I totally fell in love.? "Mr. Brightside" came out and was great too....I also like "Change Your Mind".? Great stuff and the new album is going to be one of the highlights of the year as with Dylan's new album and hopefully that one band that's supposed to put out an album this year? who's name is currently perplexing me.

PS FUCK YEAH........Big props to Brandon Flowers for sporting the mustache.  It makes us people trying to bring the stache back look good.  God bless us all and Mike Ditka.

I think "When You Were Young" is a pretty cool song, but I don't think it quite lives up to the greatness of the first 5 tracks on Hot Fuss (particularly "Somebody Told Me," "Mr. Brightside," and "All These Things That I've Done." I completely agree with y'all that The Killers (along with Axl and OK Go) was the only thing worth seeing from the VMA's this year.

not really Gn'R related, although i just thought i would mention that The Killers are on Friday Night with
Jonathan Ross (tonight). Knowing that Jonathan likes to be down to earth with guests, him just might pop the question, what was it like meeting Mr Rose, and may hint at Axl appearing on the show at some point. Then again, Axl might not get a mention  :peace:

Friday Night with Jonathan Ross
A mix of music and celebrity chat with Jonathan Ross. Guests include Ricky Gervais, Julie Walters and Pete and Nikki from Big Brother, with music from The Killers.

Its really fucking ridiculous that some people would waste time posting about a band they don't know two shits about.

For the record they are from Laz Vegas, Nevada USA not the U.K.

Yeah the new album is great it came early today from Play.com. Surley illegal but hey. The enterlude is before when you were young but its a bit shorter than what he played live.

As far as the album goes. It sounds good. I think its more of a grower than Hot Fuss but sound like Springsteen to me and sound alot more mature music.

Cool. They were on SNL last night too. Pretty awesome. They're the next big thing in my opinion. Well as far as "Big" can get these days. Coldplay is on the outs I believe and The Killers are the "It" band now.  Thank god they're actually really good. In my opinion they are the one new band right now that seems to have some staying power. Time will tell I guess.

Anyone notice how the guitar was practically inaudible during "when you were young?"  I'm sure it wasn't the band's fault, but still, they looked a bit silly.  I was really looking forward to the album, but all the reviews are really butchering the thing, and my expectations have lowered as a result.  I really like the first single, and hope to be pleasantly surprised...

The only really bad review I've seen so far of it has been "drumroll" those dipshits at Rolling Stone.? It claims that they're trying to imitate Springsteen and drop the new wave that brought them to the ball game.? Well they hit it on the head, but is that such a bad thing?? If the music is still good why not give it a chance right.? The idiots at Rolling Stone have dumbed that magazine down so much in the past few years, it's not even funny.? They give 4-5 star reviews of shit like Nelly and Limp Bizkits and Beyonce, yet put down The Killers, GNR, Dylan and so many other awesome bands.? The funny thing is that they will still end up putting them on the cover when they sell a shitload of records.? I think all self-respecting bands should boycot that shit rag.? I'm not saying that out of spite, I just think it's to the point where it has no purpose to even exist anymore other than to smear the poser emo/rap/nu-metal shit that the little kiddies soak up.

I read the Rolling Stone review after reading bill213's post and it is excessively harsh. I've only listened to the album twice so far, but I can't really agree with the RS review. The only thinking I will agree with is that it is a little disappointing that they abandoned the dancey synth pop sound on Hot Fuss, but it is still a good album. So far I don't think any individual tracks stand out like some from Hot Fuss do. I can't really figure out what the singles will be because none of them seem to grab you right away, but as a collection of songs its very good. I think this is one of those albums that is a grower. The more you listen to it the better it sounds. The 2 Best Buy bonus tracks are also good.

Title: Re: The Killers
Post by: Bill 213 on October 03, 2006, 07:09:33 PM
The funny thing now since I bought the album this morning and listened to it.........is that I really only see the Springsteen influence in about 2 songs.  When You Were Young & The River Is Wild are about the only Springsteenish songs on there.  The rest have a very smiliar synth feel to them.  I think Rolling Stone just has a wild hair up their ass for the Killers.  Like I said, give it a month or two and they'll be on the cover again.  Anyhow my only gripe about this album is..........It's too short.  They shouldn't have released those extra tracks as bonus, just put them on the album already.  The good news is that the video for the song "Bones" has been directed by Tim Burton and it's supposed to be out around Halloween.  I think that is the one grower song right there.  It's cool though and the video should be awesome.

I just had to add that the last two Dylan albums got 5 out 5's in RS. The one before that got a 4. So I don't think that's "putting down Dylan."

at first I also had this impression the songs weren't as catchy as in Hot Fuss but once I listened to it more it got better

Hey buddy. Some of us where getting canned in here for liking them when Hot Fuss came out. Mr Brightside for me was one of the best songs of the last 5 years.

The new album is gonna be a classic. Not as many out and out anthems but some awesome guitar and meloides. and on the whole better songs than the first album

I can hear U2 and Springsteen in this album and that can only be a good thing. . .  The first 6 songs run through and every one is a cracker.

Gotta be one of the best bands in the world at the moment. Can't wait til Glastonbury lets hope i can get tickets

Mrs. Version is a huge fan. We're going to see them in Detroit and Toronto next week. The new album has its moments of glory (Exitlude, Uncle Johnny) but I think that the production ruins it for me. It sounds like there's a layer of... air or something between the music and the listener if that makes any sense. When I heard that they were working with Flood, I cringed because I always felt that Adam Clayton's bass was all but squashed to death on U2's albums. I hear it happening on Sam's Town as well. Still, it's great to hear 'big' songs again. It's not porn rap or shoe-gazing mid-temp heavy rock, so I'll take it.  ;)

I wasn't a big fan of the Killers until just this past week. I only liked five songs off of Hot Fuss ("Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", "Mr. Brightside", "Smile Like You Mean It", "All These Things That I've Done", and "Change Your Mind"). I thought the album would have been a great EP but I thought only half of their stuff was good enough to be on any album.
That being said, I bought Sam's Town on the strength of "When You Were Young" (sounded like a cross between The Cure, Billy Joel, and Queen) and I fuckin' love that album! Two or three songs took two listens to grow on me but I absolutely love it all now and I am a rock/funk/blues fan. I don't like most modern music, but this is a great album. I think it will dissapoint a lot of Killers fans as I feel it is a pretty big departure from most (not all) of their other stuff. There's a lot less synth and a lot more guitar (Great bass on that Bling song as well). As version posted a little while ago, the songs are very "big". They are lush and loud and big. All in all I think it far surpasses Hot Fuss. From the opening track to the "exitlude" it is just a fantastic album.

I love how Rolling Stone trashed this album in their initial review giving it 2 out of 5 stars and saying the Killers sold their New Wave roots out and turned their back on what made them famous......then I see a commercial last night for the single "Read My Mind" and it has Rolling Stone now praising the album claiming it one of the best in years.

I enjoy this album now just as much as ever....it has some really decent songs on it.  The videos aren't that bad either.  Rolling Stone was quick to trash this initially because they figured that due to the Killers selling their teeny bopper appeal out, they couldn't suckle the coveted milk teet of their former success.

because they are good.

I loved 'When You Were Young' and 'Read My Mind' . . Bones wasn't that great and was suprised they chose it as a single. But their 1st album had some bonafide anthems and their second album has more killer than filler.

Are their albums the greatest ever . . NO. But they have a bloody great live set now with songs like 'Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine', 'Mr Brightside', 'Somebody Told Me', 'All Those Things That I've Done', 'When You Were Young', 'Read My Mind', 'For Reasons Unkown', 'Sam's Town', 'Indie Rock n Roll', 'Smile Like You Mean It', 'Uncle Jonny' and 'Under The Gun'

Thats 13 great songs IMO and if you include 'Andy You're A Star' and 'Bones' thats a pretty entertaining gig.

I think people who don't like them just dont get them. i have a friend like that but even he likes Brightside and some other songs

The new album, "Day & Age" is coming out in November!  Has anyone heard the single (Human)?  What do you think?

Looking back, I think "Sam's Town" is far superior to "Hot Fuss"...  In fact, I still listen to that album regularly.  I've said numerous times that I think Read My Mind might be the best song written this decade.  I'm hoping for a few suprises on the new disc!

Just checked Play.com, here in the UK The Killers have a huge following and their new album is out the same day as CD, from the looks of the pre-sale chart its out-selling it too!!

Do you think CD being a straight number one album matters? Would you feel like it wasn't a successful comeback if The Killers got the top spot?
I'm gonna hold back on buying it until the week after CD, just curious for other peoples thoughts!

The Killers stand a good chance of beating CD to number one. Our charts are very media driven and at the moment it's important that the younger, hyped band continues to have its fifteen minutes. I shouldn't spend any time worrying about it.

The truth is, The Killers started out good but got bad quickly. Many haven't caught on to this yet. Unfortunately, we're huge fans of bad indie in the UK. At least CD should beat the likes of Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs in sales.

True, I don't think the UK Indie scene ever recovered from Be Here Now!
I remember reading an Oasis interview where Noel said the solo in Live Forever was inspired by his secret love of GN'R!

Yeah! It was in Select Magazine around '94-'95, he wanted the solo to be double the length but his producer refused to let him!, He was stood on the side of stage at Rio once too and congratulated them after!!

awesome stuff.

i always wondered whether they were fans of guns or not.

i remember them dedicated a song to him at the Rio show they did when i watched on youtube, but i thought that was out of tribute to his onstage madness!

There used to be an interview with Oasis on that show and Axl Rose but its not been on the net for a long time.

if someone could find it, gimme a link!!!

Anyone know where gnr members past n present. including Axl of course stand on Oasis?

Day & Age leaked a few days ago, it's very good - I'm happy they chose more of a sound that resembled the first album rather than Sam's Town.

I'll buy it next Tuesday.

I really like this band, specially Brandon?s voice...The new album is The Killers back to basics, considering Sam?s Town(which is awesome btw) is a guitar record. The new one is new wave 2008!!!

Hmmm.. I just read the recent posts in this thread, you guys really thought Sam's Town was a bad record?   I liked half of their first CD, but I thought on the whole Sam's Town was much better.

I'm going to wait until Monday to buy the new CD (I think having Chinese Democracy should make the wait bearable).  I was definitely not blown away by "Human", but I still have hope for the CD.

Guns N' Roses, Kanye West & The Killers releasing CDs in the same week..... I'm almost POSITIVE that I'm the only one, but I think this is just amazing.

second album only had 2 good tracks IMO, kinda the same goes with the first record, maybe 3-4 good songs on the first

I have all their albums, I even think their b-side album is great!
but all in all, Sam's Town is my favourite album.
both Sam's Town and Hot Fuss have barely any filler material IMO.

I like their synth sound more.

Title: Kerrang Radio reported the Killers have outsold GNR
Post by: mrlee on November 26, 2008, 10:43:22 AM
By either 220,000 or 20,000 copies (cant remember which one it was). They reported it this morning various times stating "it hasnt done as well as people thought it would".

What a sad day. Music really has gone to shit.

Time to give up i think. My generation sucks THAT BAD.

It was 20,000.

The Killers have taken the lead in the competition to top this week?s albums chart, with their Day And Age (Vertigo) outselling Guns N' Roses long-awaited new album Chinese Democracy (Polydor) by around 20,000 copies, in what is likely to be one of the biggest chart battles of the year.

In its first day of sale Day And Age sold 70,764 copies to Chinese Democracy?s 50,791, according to midweek sales figures that see five new entries in the top ten.

I like Hot Fuss and Sam's Town but they got too dancey sounding after that. I listened to their new single once but couldn't get past the blatant Springsteen rip-off and awful lyrics of it.
