Title: Is Nascar a sport? ongoing debate
Post by: floppyfish27 on February 21, 2007, 05:12:35 PM
Alright -  just please respond yes/no.. I am having an ongoing debate with people I work with regarding this matter.

Nascar is listed as a sport, classified as a sport, marketed as a sport.

we are about 50/50 here in the office regarding this.      does a sport involve some sort of ball/ physical contact.. etc?

keep it simple, comment if you like... but do you classify nascar as a SPORT?

Nascar is a sport as much as darts or curling or bowling is a sport.

Okay... Maybe it is easier to do as a poll... and since only us superbeings can make them, here it is...

I don't like Nascar in any way. I have never like Nascar and don't believe I ever will, but it is a Sport.  :smoking:

Sport to me always implies a physical aspect. The only physical ability showcased in Nascar is the ability to remain conscious at high speeds in a car. So No.

No

i think that it is not because to me its more like an expensive hobby. i put Nascar in the same category as poker not a sport but more of a hobby or game, i dont know i'm kinda mixed sided on this one  :-\

It's absolutely a sport.  Those guys go out and risk their lives every race.  They sustain all sorts of ludicrous G-forces, lose 10 pounds of waterweight, have to maintain pinpoint focus the whole race.  Pit stops are a work of art, changing four tires, making adjustments, adding fuel in under 13 seconds.

Tell me it's not a sport.

I guess  if riding horses around  in a circle  is  considered a sport, then driving a car around  in a circle  can be also. For me, the appeal  of either  is zero. Actually, less than zero.

No it is not a sport. Its 200 rednecks driving 200 mph in a circle. If it were a sport driving would be a sport it isn't. So neither is racing.

It is a Sport . Any type of racing is a sport... If Golf , which is the most boring shit to watch and play, is a sport, then Nascar is. And It's f@#$ cool.. Go 42  :hihi:

Of course it's a sport.

It is a Sport, but with a major dependence on equipment (engine, chassis, etc which are developed by engineers and not the competitors). So I guess it?s more unfair than other sports where the equipment only has a marginal influence.
It definitely requires great skills, physical endurance and an outstanding capacity of reaction.

Btw. Nascar is boring as hell, touring car racing, Formula 1 and rally are far more fun to watch? : ok:

If it were a sport driving would be a sport it isn't.

If running were a sport then walking would be a sport.

... Go figure.

Yes I definetly think it is...They have to sit in that car for like 4 hours, not piss, stay hydrated and cant let go of there concentration for a second or they could crash or be at the back of the field

It's not a sport ... motor racing like what goes on at Bathurst (V8 Supercars) or Formula 1 is a sport.
Driving around in circles is not. I mean c'mon, what kind of a car race doesn't even have any right hand turns? (apart from coming out of pit lane )

There ARE road courses in NASCAR.  ::)

What an ignorant answer, and a lame attempt at a joke.

An argument could be made about Bathurst/Formula 1 not being a sport too. I mean how hard is it to turn right and left over and over?

BTW, NASCAR does race on two road circuits every season. So your statemnt about not have any right turns is false.

Well that's what I get for being an Aussie and watching real racing.
btw ... 2 street races out of how many?

Dude, ROAD races, not STREET races.  There's a difference.  But you would know, since you're an ace motorhead.

By the way, Marcos Ambrose raced in Australia (Supercars I think)but felt like he needed a REAL challenge and went to NASCAR.  Wow, how's that feel?

Road and street racing is boring for the most part.  There's hardly any passing, and all it comes down to is fuel and pit strategy.

Feels pretty good actually, people change codes within the same sport all the time, happens quite frequently down here with Ruby Union / Rugby League for a variety of different reasons. Can't find a quote from Marcus saying how the reason he was changing was cause he needed a real challenge, you got a link there mate?

I can't begin to tell you how wrong this statement is. I strongly suggest you watch the Bathurst 1000 this year if you wanna see a real race.

I like all forms of racing bud.  And if they show the race on the SPEED channel, I'm game.

Bathurst 1000, Dakar Rally, Monaco GP.....all great races....

But did you see the Daytona 500 2 weeks ago?  Nothing can top that.

Naw I don't have Pay TV seeings as how I'm a poor bastard  ... I'm sure the race was nailbiting, as far as closeness, but whatI just fail to understand is how driving around in circles (or ovals) is that exciting ...
Racing is good, be it a street race, track race  whatever, but going round and round in circles with only 4 corners  per lap just doesn't do it for me.

How many is that? It's two more races than you had previsously stated.

Yeah mate ... you're correct! It does have some right hand turns.  : ok:  ::)

But you didn't answer my question dude? I think they have like 2 street races and like 22 or something where they drive around and around in circles.

There are two road races out of thirty-eight. So you were wrong saying that it didn't have any.

Yes ... I sure was.

But 2 out of 38?  :o :o Reminds me of Daytona the arcade game, where 90% of people would play the circle track and I'd be thinking why why why when there were good tracks. I spose it's the Aussie in me that likes to see cars turn in both directions.  :hihi:
