Title: Songs you'd like to see dropped from the set list?
Post by: waxlrick on April 10, 2007, 06:29:08 AM
Couldn't find anything in the search results to suggest this has been a topic before so for a change what songs would you like to see dropped from the GNR setlist?

For me, the following songs have run their course and I would like to see them replaced with something new or revived from the past. I know some of you wont agree but here are mine.

Brownstone
Knockin on Heavens Door
Paradise City
My Michelle
Out Ta Get Me

P.S. Would love to see Axl keep the Sailin' cover and a new piano cover before Nov Rain

Look forward to your thoughts?

W Axl Rick

waxlrick personally I believe that there is some reason linked to the legal issues Axl has been dealing with, as to why GNR only play AFD songs, the singles from UYI and occasionaly songs from GN'R Lies and Spaghetti (like Down on the Farm). That being said, I know nothing about the issues so it's just a guess. I find it odd they don't play any UYI songs outside the singles from those albums. And if they do add extras, it's stuff like Down on the Farm and the other covers they did. I think it's unlikely any of those songs could be dropped if they can't add any other UYI songs in.

In Australia I'm really hoping to see My Michelle and OTGM. I know they have played it loads but after seeing it on boots etc. I finally get to see it live. Its important to remember that the shows are for people seeing it, most for the first time, not forums who follow the setlists each show.

I'm not too fussed about KOHD to be honest. I wouldn't lose any sleep about not seeing that when I go. Brownstone I'd like to see but not as much as the others.

can't see them dropping paradise city, only time that would be ok for me would be in order to make space for new tunes.

Fucking hard dropping any of them big guns they all got something special, My suggestion is drop it all and release a tripple album, start perfoming only new songs, as much as i totally love the old stuff that wuld be a move that I would respect.

Live and lety die would go for me. But for me any song would be ok to drop if they replaced with a Guns song old or new.

Yeah man I am an Aussie too. I was at the Eastern Creek Feb 93 concernt so I know what you're saying but we have access to so many bootlegs these days on the net that there are some songs that I really just don't need to see anymore.

I'd probably lose:

You could be mine
Out Ta Get me
Mr. Brownstone

Take Rocket Queen out of the options... as well as Down on the Farm.

And loose all the solos... except Rons.  ::)

Enjoy  :-X

For me, it would be :

- Brownstone
- Live And Let Die
- Rocket Queen
- Paradise City
- Used To Love Her

I love them but I'm getting tired hearing them over and over ...

I don't know why I don't have that feeling with other songs that they play all the time (like Jungle etc.)

I agree and I think the same. Maybe there?s some legal reason. Anyways, I think it?s a pretty good setlist and I would do whatever to get another chance to see GNR live.

I can't wait to see It's So Easy.

I think Jungle, Easy, Brownstone, NR, Sweet Child and Paradise are all classics which all may not like, but will get the crowd into it singing along.

Once you are there, whether you have seen it a million times on boots, seeing it, hearing it and watching everyone rocking out and hearing them sing, will be a whole new experience. I know Baz has done loads of My Michelles now and people are probably over it, but I can't wait to see it live. The place will go crazy as most don't follow it as closely as us. It will rock  : ok: Goodnight all!

i'm ok with them playing all the songs from AFD except: You're Crazy.

i think that version sucks ass.

I like the set-list. I wish they played more obscure songs. however i think Axl doesn't really like the UYI records too much. that's why a lot of the songs don't get played. i wan't more new songs.

don't drop my michelle... now that Sebastian Bach is outta the picture it should sound well.

I don't know...I don't buy into the whole 'legality' of not playing the Illusion material live. As far as I know (which, granted, I'm not a lawyer) anyone can 'cover' any song in a live show without consequence. It's when the artist records and sells said 'covered' material that there is an issue and legal steps need to be taken in order to profit off of another song writer's work. It really doesn't make sense that Slash & Co. would want to block Axl from playing the Illusion era songs anyway. Where's the harm in playing 'Civil War'? Even if they could legally 'stop' Axl from performing some of their older catalogue, don't you think they would have tried to block songs from Appetite (a more widely excepted album) instead?

If you ask me, I think Axl just chose to make the setlist Appetite heavy so that fans, new and old, could witness how the new line up can 'play the fuck' out of those tunes...as those tunes are usually closest to the hearts of all guns fans, proving that Axl didn't just throw this thing together with only CD in mind. He still wants to rock out to the older tunes...the tunes fans will always come to see, regardless of how amazing CD is.

Back to the topic at hand.

I would drop...

It's So Easy
My Michelle
Out Ta Get Me
Live N' Let Die
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Guitar Solos (at least cut 'em to one solo per guitarist or have them switch off on solos each night...chews up TOO MUCH time IMO)

Leave it in...or replace with...

November Rain (Estranged)
Mr. Brownstone (Dead Horse)
I.R.S. (NEW ROCKER)
Better (NEW ROCKER)

Setlits 'must haves' in my book...

Nightrain
Rockets Queen
Paradise City
Sweet Child O'Mine
Welcome to the Jungle
You Could Be Mine
Patience

Perfect setlist in my eyes on the next N. American leg...

Chinese Democracy
Welcome to the Jungle
You Could Be Mine
Don't Cry
NEW SONG (ROCKER)
Madagascar
Civil War
Dead Horse
NEW SONG (MID TEMP ROCKER)
There Was a Time
Sweet Child O'Mine
Rocket Queen
The Blues
Patience
NEW SONG (ROCKER)
Estranged
Nightrain

ENCORE:
NEW SONG (ROCKER)
NEW SONG (EPIC BALLAD)
Paradise City

IMO IRS is the best live song of the new ones.. drop the slow old ones (NR n' patience etc.) and keep the slow new ones (the blues n' madagascar etc.)

Ah I forgot. My biggest one. Patience. I've never been a big fan of the song, especially on boots - I wouldn't care if that was dropped. It's probably my least liked GN'R single.

I wonder why this was dropped to Dead Horse. Perhaps the moderators prefer deeper, more meaningful post like "Axl Rose like a Meez"?

Fair enough but I couldn't find any posts like this using the search function and also it was getting plenty of feedback so it suprises me somewhat. But as a long time member / observer of this messageboard I am well aware that it's the dumbass posts topics that usually stay on the main board unfortunately.

I would like to see NR go--they could do 2-3 other songs  in its place. Also, I am tired of Brownstone, and LALD. I say keep Michelle, because it rocks, and keep OTGM. Keep KOHD because Axl will never drop it, plus it is a nice change  of pace.

GN'R should drop (in order of urgency)

1) Live And Let Die -----------> and replace it with ''Rhyad And The Bedouins''
2) Knockin' On Heaven's Door --------------> and replace it with ''Knockin' On Heaven's Door'' GN'R 92 style
3) Patience --------------> and replace it with ''Prostitute'' or ''Sorry'' or any of the new songs that appeared on that paper setlist
4) Mr. Brownstone --------------> and replace it with ''Oh My God''
5) Don't Cry [solo] --------------> and replace it with ''Catcher In The Rye'' or ''Breakdown''

Just drop all the solos.  They have their place within songs, or perhaps for novely stuff (like Ron's Mr Grinch, on 20/12) but i don't like to hear 6 or 7 minute solos from the other guys when they could instead be playing a song.

I'd say keep all the signature old gnr tunes they play

Welcome To The Jungle
It's So Easy
Mr. Brownstone
Sweet Child O' Mine
You Could Be Mine
November Rain
Patience
Nightrain
Paradise City

maybe even drop ISE for Don't Cry....that is 9 or 10 tunes and fill in the rest of the show with new tunes they average 18-20 songs a night so about half the set would be old songs, and half new.  But they wont change the setlist anyway until the album drops but thats what i'd like to see...if my opinion even matters
