Title: Pizza
Post by: jarmo on May 01, 2007, 06:06:29 PM
Time to get serious in the middle of all the "say something about" and semi-political threads.

Time to discuss the dish called pizza!

What's the weirdest pizza you ever ate? Where can you get the best pizza? Your favorite toppings? Deep dish or thin crust? Recipes etc etc.

I still haven't managed to figure out why you can't seem to get a pepperoni pizza in Sweden......

It seems like you can get anything but pepperoni on your pizzas here. Peanuts, curry sauce, banana, lettuce, reindeer......

When I was in Lima,Peru I had the pleasure of tasting a 'Guinea Pig' pizza. It was pretty weird considering we have these creatures as pets in Australia but yummy nonetheless.

Spinach Pizza, which was pretty good.

Macaroni Pizza,  which tasted like rubber.

Besides that, I tend to go for normal pizzas with bacon, sausage, and pepperoni.

Thin crust...I don't like all that dough....

Now, frozen pizza....sucks no matter what kind it is

"Chain" Pizza (Pizza Hut, Dominos, ect....) ? ?sucks balls

Now, there is one place in Las Vegas here where i like to get Pizza..... It's called "Metro Pizza" ?Very good, a bit spendy, but good for delivery. The Rainbow has good pizza as well.

I like to make homeade pizza. I just make it with traditional toppings like pepperoni, hamburger, green peppers, ect.

BTW....NEVER order the Lobster Pizza from Red Lobster.......ewww

I disagree about the Dominos.  Dominos thin crust pizza is my fav!!!  But it's too expensive so I don't get it too often.  :-\

I only like plain cheese or pepperoni.

Joe's (the one a few blocks from me, not the "famous" one) makes a good pepperoni pizza.

Dominos is awful. I stay away from all the "fast food" pizza like Pizza Hut, Papa Johns etc.

If available to you, seek out the mom & pop places, preferably those who speak Italian. They know how to make good pizza.

If not, make it yourself. Get a Pizza pan with holes cut out of the bottom for proper air flow. Dont forget to grease the pan with olive oil before you put the dough on it or you'll have a hell of a time with it sticking to the pan. Get real pizza dough ( not that pillsbury shit), roll it out using a bit of flour so it doesnt stick to everything & shape it to the pan.  Then use a  good pizza sauce and  mozzerella along with a small amount of fontina cheese ( this adds some sharpness) then put on whatever toppings you want. I like to use fresh garlic which I cut with a razor blade as thin as possible and put it on before the cheese. Heat the oven to 500 degrees (F) and bake it for 15-20 minutes. That is how I do it anyway. It is better and cheaper than dominos, trust me.

I love pizza.  :D

The best pizza I ever had was in Venice, plain and simple margarita but still so tasteful (maybe it's because I'd been starving all day).

The worst was in Rome: Tortellini pizza.
You can find any kind of pizza topings in Rome.
You do not have to try them all, thought (I didn't know it back then, I was mesmerized by the variety).  :hihi:

Dominos rules, so does Pizza Hut.

real pizza dough rubbed with just a bit of olive oil and garlic, prebake it to almost done, take it out and layer it with fresh bruschetta mix, finely diced spinach and thin slices of parma prosciutto, all cover with shredded mozzarella, fontina and sprinkled with grated frsh parm ....the finish in the over till the cheese is starting to turn a light crispy brown

Pizza is a family affair in our household.  The kids help make the dough in our breadmaker.  We use milled flaxseed as a substitute for oil, and we use a healthier flour as well.  Personally, I'm a fan of the high-rise Sicilian crust.     My 3 year old (almost 4) also takes some of the dough to make a smaller pizza for himself (it makes a lot of dough)

When it comes to store-bought, I love Pizza Hut pan pizza with sausage, onions, mushrooms, and green peppers.  Pizza Hut is deliciously greasy so it's a once or twice a year kinda pizza.  Super Bowl Sunday is one of those days.

So...best pizza?  My house!

i've also had pizza without sauce or cheese, it was like the really good dough with arugula and and i cant rememebr what else but surprisingly enough it was great!!

My grandfather has a brick, woodfired oven in his backyard - the pizzas cooked in there taste mighty fine! Slighty burnt on the base with a chewy dough........The potato and garlic topping tastes goood!

PS. In Australia we have a hilarious show called Fat Pizza. The latest series involves the guys travelling around the world to find the best tasting Pizza - I think the ones from Naples hit the spot!

A few thoughts:

I really like NY style pizza.  Thin, floppy slices, not too much sauce, and delicious grease.  Perfect.  I know that's sacrilegious for a Midwesterner, but the deep dish Chicago style isn't my thing.  I like it on occasion, and it has the advantage of being able to handle more and bigger toppings, but generally I prefer the thin.  If I want sausage, that's when I go thick, because the thick can handle the BIG hunks of sausage, but usually I want plain cheese, and NY style is perfect for that.  So, as much as East Coast snobbery annoys the hell out of me, I give them big points for the pizza.

I'm generally against "California style" pizzas, which means taking off the good stuff (pepperoni, sausage, etc.) and putting on nasty stuff that doesn't belong on a pizza.  I'm sure, right now, some douchebag is eating a California style tofu and dolphin-safe tuna pesto pizza, with a cranberry reduction.   :'(  Poor bastard.

As for chains, I find that Pizza Hut varies a GREAT deal, depending on where you live.  On the north side of Indy, the Pizza Huts are pretty good, but a lot of other places they really suck.  And their breadsticks change, depending on location.  Most have those crappy, medium-dark brown rectangular breadsticks, with marinara dipping sauce.  Fuck that!  In Indy they have fluffy, fresher tasting breadsticks, with fucking nacho cheese, as was mandated by God, in the book of Genesis.

Home oven pizzas have improved dramatically during my lifetime.  They used to blow, but my wife and I have one/week (usually).  The Freschetta Brick Oven style are pretty good, and are probably my favorites for home cookin'.

I also like a good white pizza, but haven't had one in a while, as nowhere around here seems to have them.  But you can also get some pretty crappy whites.  I knew someone who thought a white pizza had ranch dressing on it.

There is certainly fast food pizza, which is generally gross, and NY pizza has a tendency to be eaten "on the go."  But I'm willing to bet that the US has more traditional pizzerias than any other country on this pizza lovin' planet.  So give us another shot, won't you?

my favorite is a provolone pie from a place in philly called Original's. provolone cheese and they put the sauce on top. everyone i know that has ever tried it calls it the best - even my friends from NY.

i like brick oven pizza too. my favorite is a well known place in philly called Tacconelli's. it's a small place in a bad neighborhood, and you have to order the dough a day in advance.
http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/profile/8978738

just this week i tried John's Pizza in NYC - also brick oven and it was excellent. similar to and just as good as tacconelli's.

Lets see:

I prefer deep dish, Chicago style, but live the thin crust too.

Some "strange" (not very, though) pizzas (remember, the cheese goes without saying):

Clams Casino: Bacon, clams, garlic,...."white" sauce (though you can get it with red, too).

"American Hot" (my fav, btw): Pepperoni, jalepeno's, garlic, hot sauce, spicy sausage, banana peppers, cherry peppers, red sauce, red pepper flakes.

Margharita: Chicken, sweet red onions, lime slices and yes....margharita mix stirred into the white sauce.

I have 2 fav pizza places: Genaro's near work and Portabello's near home.  Neither does Chicago style though.....for that I have to take a bit of a trek to a place called Vinny's, about 25 or 30 min from home (or deal with Uno's, which is OK, but not nearly as good).

Edit: And the greates travesty to pizza, EVER, is Sbarro's. :)

Sorry cats but I have tasted NY pizza and it is ok but still doesn't compare to Chi-town pizza. My favorite is pepperoni and artichoke - for all you salt lovers, the combination is awesome! And I used to eat ketchup on my pizza in high school cause it was sooooooo dry. Then I couldn't drop the damn habit. But chicago has giordano's, uno's, lina's, way too many to name. I have local places I like - Phillie's and Nonnie's. I never order from Dominos or Pizza Hut but I do eat those types at kiddie parties - blah.

Although in college, one of our good friends was a Domino delivery man and since I was in southern Indiana, we would go to the shop late night and make our own zas or call him and ask him to bring any dead zas over - meaning people ordered but weren't there or it was a prank. It's not so bad if it's free.
