It does, and it will do awesome on the rock charts just like Slither & FTP did. It is catchy, has that awesome bridge and a killer Slash solo. This song will do very well for the band. The only people who will be complaining along the way are message board visitors, just as they did while Contraband was on its way to triple platinum and winning a Grammy. People around here seem to be more interested in VR sounding like GNR than GNR sounding like GNR, hence the disappointment and claims of generic and mediocre.

I was not to fond of contraband, it was not the music it was the singer. some songs were good even with scott but this has a kind of pop  feel to  the way he sings it.

The only track of those we've heard so far that is really something special is This Fight (Could Be The Last Fight). No awkward lyrics (the lyrics are awesome), fantastic singing by Scott and a nice bluesy solo. I'll buy the record for that track.

As I have pointed out to you numerous times but you refuse to understand or aknowledge, I am a fan of the music you won't let anyone talk about....so you wouldn't be able to see my positive comments about it. I have also pointed out to you that I am negative about everything GNR aside from the music because they run a shit business. You again can't seem to separate that a person can be a fan of a band's music and think they do an awfully shitty job of pretty much everything outside of the music they make.

Grammy's and album sales aren't the way to measure good music, but it is an indication that a great deal of people seem to really like it, which must mean it can't be that bad.

I think most of the negativity from VR around here stems from frustration with the pace of GNR as we would all love to be seeing them at the stage VR is at right now where there is actual cause for excitement and hope. To that contingent that hates VR the reality that SBQM and Last Fight are going to be hit singles gets them aggitated because I think many wanted to see them fall on there face and not have another hit record. It is pretty obvious that is not going to happen now, and that VR is only going to continue getting more popular.

If you would like to see some GNR positivity out of me how about letting us talk about the actual music. Every thread anymore you pop in to let me know I am negative about GNR, and I continue to tell you how we could rectify that. You could save yourself alot of time typing that same thing over and over if you would open the lid just a lit bit.

If you want hard rock songs try live versions of IRS CD and Better they are hard rock, ths stuff IMO is Bon Jovi Nickleback type rock IE soft

If you thing GNR fans are upset because VR is lashing out songs like SBQM and Last Fight, you're wrong. We're mostly upset at the injustice that is being served to great musicians. Several members of VR are capable of so much more; while for others, this is the best that they can do. ?It's a matter of reaching potential, not expectations. Noone on this board will honestly deny that they could produce better music; if you do, you're lying to yourself. Regarding expectations, GNR fans don't expect VR to sound like GNR II. Frankly, we're getting EXACTLY what we expected. We're not disappointed on the basis of expectation - We are disappointed that members did not live up to their potential. Don't blur the line.

I would say that again, no one is saying they need to recreate GNR.  But I can't listen to these tracks without thinking that Slash is either a) holding back to avoid stealing his lead singer's thunder, b) just isn't trying that hard, or c) maybe he needs a rhythm guitarist with some sort of personality and style to push him.  One full album and then four more songs from Libertad and I haven't quite figured out what purpose Kushner serves in this band

Slash was never the greatest technical player.  What made Slash great was the emotion of his work.  This song is lifeless, and doesn't stir up any emotions for me until his solo at the very end.  Although it would certainly help if the lyrics weren't so extremely lame, and the vocals/vocal melodies were somewhat inspired. 

Sure, this song will be a hit.  RCA's promotions department will make sure of that.  So what?  There are a lot of shitty songs that are smash hits these days.  How many smash hits have Creed, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and other lame bands had over the last decade?  I wouldn't go so far as to call SBQM shitty but it is a big slab of mediocre

We all kind of need to get over this idea that either GNR or VR are going to release some kind of album that is going to save Rock n' Roll or be lauded as one of the greats the way Appetite is. It is just not happening, and applying that standard to these albums as the deciding factor as to whether they are good or not is just asking for one big let down.

GNR and AFD aside, Duff's Beautiful Disease had tracks 10x better than SBQM and Slash has written tunes for Snakepit that also put this to shame. Compare it to their musical ability; not to the collective product of a band lineup that doesn't exist anymore. Do you think SBQM is the best that Slash can do?

I think it's more of a band than a group of individuals. It's not about the best that Slash can do. It's about the best that Slash can add to the band. Of course on snakepit albums, Slash sounded really good. It was based around him. That's not the case anymore. What Slash adds to this song sounds really fuckin cool and I dig what everyone has brought to the table.

You're right. Collectively, VR as a band has members that have done independent projects that had excellent material on it. The each have the potential to bring something great to the table and produce some excellent music. SBQM doesn't exemplify the best qualities that this band has to offer, by the standards of either individual talent or collective talent. All I'm saying is that it worries me to think that this is the best we're going to get out of, what I would consider, otherwise very talented musicians. It doesn't need to be an epic song that changes the world, but it could certainly be better than the likes of what we've heard.

I've given them an honest fair chance. I've listened to CB hundreds of times and I've seen them live 4 times. It's not that I'm out to start the GNR v VR debate. All I am saying is that I think the band, based on the elements that they bring to the table, can do better than SBQM. FTP and Slither weren't spectacular, but they were appropriate and good enough to maintain my interests. If Libertad turns out to be a collection of songs of FTP and Slither quality, I'd probably be OK with that; although, somewhat disappointed. However, if we get a collection of songs that sound like SBQM, then they're headed in the wrong direction for my taste. I think it'd be a disapointment to a lot of avid fans of the band's members to see them settling for the "rocker" version of a glorified Blink 182. Instead of writing about pimples and teen love, they write about Machines and Texas. They can do better.

That's your opinion and I respect that, but I personally think this band can write a fuckin catchy rock song. I've been very impressed with what I've heard so far and to be honest, I was skeptical to begin with. It's all down to taste at the end of the day. Problem is, I enjoyed Contraband the first time I heard it.  Yes, it did take a few spins to really grow on me but I thought Slither rocked from the get go, I thought it was a good album.  Still do

I've listened to SBQM probably 10 times in the last 2 days.  Still think the same.  I don't think it's a good song.  It's worse than anything on Contraband IMO aside from Big Machine and Set Me Free.  The music is nothing special and the lyrics are REALLY bad, not even in a fun and stupid way.  Just bad.  I'll still buy the album, I'm sure that it'll have some cool songs on it.  But this is not one of them.  And it's a major disappointment because I felt that VR would build upon what they did with Contraband, if anything it sounds like they've taken a step backwards

If these songs are any indication of what Libertad will bring to the table, VR is gonna go the route of Audioslave.  They're following the formula to a T.  First album is a big financial success, sells a lot of records, gets praised, people thought it was good and that their next would be better.  Next album comes out, is a step backwards in terms of entertainment value, sells big the first week then slides off the charts a lot faster than the debut.  By the third album nobody really cared anymore aside from die hard fans.  It debuted high and then disappeared and nobody noticed.   The novelty of combining members from two of the biggest American rock bands in the past 20 years has worn off, now the music is gonna have to do the talking and this lame lead single isn't a good sign

However, I must be Nostradomus or something because even I was able to surmise that it is the right business decision to be promoting the album when it comes out instead of playing some tour dates that can be played at another date. Well, I think that expecting ''Libertad'' to be at least as good (if that is the word) as ''Contraband'' are acceptable and moderated expectations. No one with two working neurons can expect from a band musically leaded by Scott Weiland an album at the same level or better than any of the ''Use Your Illusions''.

Let's be honest: making a better album than ''Contraband'', moreover having the great guitar player Slash is, is not a very tough mission... This is not Pink Floyd trying to beat ''Dark Side Of The Moon''...

And now we have heard 1/4 of the new VR's album (not including ''Let it Roll'', which is as mediocre/disposable as these 4 songs) and none of these songs are even as good as the first songs we've heard from CB (Set Me Free/Slither) 3 years ago. And those first songs from Contraband are not ''Confortably Numb'' and ''Stairway To Heaven''...

No one is expecting VR to be as great as GNR or to record AFD V2. I think I will not be wrong if I say that most of us were expecting something at least as good as CB, or something slightly better. These are not HUGE expectations, they are reasonable, moderated expectations.

Unfortunately, whoever speaks the truth around here gets banned. It really is like the current democracy being practised in China.

I wasn't that impressed with the live versions I'd heard, but this song has grown on me from the few listens to this studio version, much like the Contraband tracks did. It doesn't seem like much of a departure from Contraband overall, but I still dig it, and I love the Slash solo.

Yeah, towards the end of the song he does some pretty cool drum rolls and stuff. From the VR forum, someone who heard the whole album at that radio station said that his drumming is really impressive throughout the whole album.

I listen to the song probable about 20 times now and i like it more each time .

I'm amazed that people don't like this song. The music we've heard is easily better than what was on Contraband. It's got a lot more layers, a lot more groove - it sounds fresh and original. I loved Contraband, but i'm digging this new material even more.

On thing, I wish the guitar and riff stood out a little more.  I mean the mix on Sucker Train Blues seemed a little more in your face.  But this could be due to a poor quality mp3.

Scott is no different than almost any other singer in terms of lyrics. He tends to right some good, meaningful ones on more serious songs like "The last fight" for instance, but tends to write more ridiculous ones for catchy rock tunes. If you look across the board at rock bands with 40+ year old singers you will find that their lyrics for rock songs are not nearly as good as the ones they wrote in their 20's when they sung about sex, booze and drugs. They still write great lyrics to ballads, but clearly don't have the content to pull from on straight ahead rock songs as sober millionaires. Scott holds true to that pattern. Writes good lyrics for ballads, doesn't do so hot on rock songs. Doesn't mean the songs don't still rock, it just makes them a little different.

I didnt pay much attention to the lyrics, but the music is great. I like how the pace slows down in the middle and then kicks into the solo.  The chorus is catchy too.  If I heard this on the radio, I'd crank it up.

I think for TODAY its a good rock song. Not better than contraband though.

IRS has pretty good lyrics during the verses.  The chorus is not that bad either, but it seems like a lot of people aren't familiar with the expression "make a federal case out of it" and take it literally.  IRS isn't one of Axl's better songs lyrically, that's apparent, but nowhere near as weak as SBQM.  Now I dare you to go into IRS and find a line this pathetic

I listened to this song on Repeat while running my 6 miles today and U cant beat this fucking song as far as straight up kick ass ROck N roll.

No, I think it is pretty well understood by both GNR and VR supporters that both Scott and Axl are a shell of their former selves in terms of their ability to write kick ass lyrics to a rock song. To brag about who is less mediocre at it at this point is like bragging that you got to bang the 300 pound chick instead of the 400 pound one. You really lose even if you win in that scenario.

They both still write good lyrics for ballads, a little one dimensional, but good none the less. Axl definitely excels in this category, but at least in terms of this conversation we aren't debating about who is less mediocre. Both of them are guilty of being one dimensional at this point as their ballads consist pretty much of them singing about either how they've been dumped or that no one likes them, but at least they do it well. This phenonmenon is natural as singers age though.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who likes IRS.  Screw it, I'm sticking to my guns.  I love that song.

I've listened to it a few times, and I must say, while it beats the shit out of everything else out on rock radio at the moment (Nickelback, etc.), it's still not that good a song. It's got some good parts (the intro and Slash's guitar), but the riffs are so tired and again, Weiland fails as a singer/songwriter. I expect better from a band made up of 3/5ths of Guns N' Roses....

Do you have any better method of somehow quantifying whether a song is any good or not that allows for some sort of comparisson sake that does not involve a subjective "well it sucks because it sucks or it's awesome because it is awesome"?

I use things like charts and awards as at least a reference point because at least it is some sort of objective measure to quantify or compare. It is certainly not the only one as I can name a laundry list of songs that didn't make the charts that were awesome.

I am just pointing out that when a song reaches number 1 on both of the rock charts it becomes a little harder to use the "it sucks because it sucks" rational because songs that people don't respond well to are quickly pulled from rotation. So when it manages to not only stay in rotation but works its way to the top of the charts it must mean an awful lot of people liked it.

So in that scenario either there are thousands of people wrong who all share the opinion something is good, or the one person is right who says it blows. Where would you put your money on that bet given the percentages involved?

So you can stop with your obsession about me mentioning polls as I have told you they are not the be all end all, but can serve as a tool when measuring consensus about whether something is good or bad.

As for a "lack of range and tone", I beg to differ. I think you could probably criticise some of his vocals on Contraband, but it's pretty clear to me that Scott has taken his vocals to a new level on this album. He's definately showcasing a much wider range and he's reaching notes that he simply couldn't hit while he was on drugs. His melodies are a more complex and he's put a lot more thought into his deliveries in general.

In any case, I don't really see "range" as an important aspect of a voice (Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, anyone?) - I think it's more how a voice is controlled, the melodies that a vocalist comes up with, the power of the delivery, passion, etc. Being able to hit really high notes doesn't make you a really good singer - the same goes for speed when you're playing guitar.

If his vocals aren't to your taste, then by all means - say so. But don't go saying that he's a "bad singer" with a "lack of range and tone" - it's really not true at all.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the AC/DC comment. I'm actually more of a Bon than a Brian fan, but this wasn't the point I was making. There's nothing wrong with screaming vocals, just so long as people can recognise that there are other styles of singing that deserve similar amounts of merit.

Radio play doesn't mean a hell of a lot these days.  About the only rock song that gained major buzz and made an impact on the charts without label pressure/$$$ was Crazy Bitch which was a rarity

VR will undoubtedly get high up on the charts because they have big names and their label will lobby and promote them vigorously.  The radio stations play what the labels tell/pay them to in most cases.

There are a lot of lame songs that get a ton of play on the radio.  Using chart positions and what not as a barometer for how good a song is doesn't really make sense.  Unless you're willing to say that

No, you're right - but for a song that's in this style to chart, it would tend to suggest that it's quality. It's not something you'd usually hear in the charts - so if it were to make it in, then it would be well within reason to assume that it's due to it being an exceptional track.

That's my opinion anyway.

But so far, I think these songs are catchy and could really find an audience.  I'd be surprised if this album wasn't a hit. 

But considering how their first (medicore) album was already a number one selling, multi-platinum, Grammy award winning record, I think it'd be hard for them to not make a popular album.

Very good song. My only complaint is the backing vocals sound kind of weak compared to Scott's. I would like it better if they took those out. .

True, the rock history is full of great songs with awful lyrics, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Oasis, Rolling Stones etc. Many of the best songs have the worst lyrics, wouldn't we all despise i.e. Enter Sandman if lyrics were so important. Great lyrics are sadly scarce.

Do like the kinda of 'groove' of the guitar playing at the start of the song, but I think personally the biggest problem is the leaks recently from another band (wonder who that can be!) have overshadowed this new song, as good as it is.

In making a natural comparison to GNR, these songs from VR that I have heard do not have that "big" sound or vibe to them. Maybe thats by design Idk....we all know VR is the stripped down version and GNR is the roll out all the tricks. So maybe its not fair to put VR on that level but I guess thats why I ultimately love Axl and GNR because they always want to push the envelope...old and new...Aside from Slither and YGNR no Slash solo or VR song comes close to the Better or TWAT solos...

I just wish Slash would have more of a role in this band. It seems like he has some cool riffs and ideas but doesnt take it over the top and tell the world hes here on these songs. I do like his tapping effects he had on another new song I heard the other day. That was cool. It was slowed down and he was tapping...maybe on "she mine" not sure....

Probably. The snippet of ''The Last Fight'' was not bad at all. But compared to ''You Got No Right'', I think that TLF lacks originality. ''You Got No Right'' is in my opinion the best VR song ever, and one of the best songs I've ever heard since the GNR breakup in 1995/6. Great vocals by Scott, very emotional, good (or very good) lyrics and an outstanding guitar performance. The first thing I said after hearing YGNR is ''damn, these are the Slash/Weiland I used to love''. I remember checking the velvet-revolver.com site daily just to read ''YGNR is gonna be the second single''. After ''Fall To Pieces'', expecting YGNR for the third. And nothing.

Even when I think that ''The Last Fight'' is probably going to be the closest to ''You Got No Right'', I think that this song lacks of originality. I KNOW I've heard those melodies before, and it doesn't have that ''emotive'' thing that YGNR has. YGNR is, in my opinion, the only song from the VR catalogue that is at the same level of ''Use Your Illusion'' or ''Core'' songs. I know that it doesn't have to be necesarily at that level, I know...

My conclusion is that VR has the potential to make great songs, closer to the GNR/STP fans' taste. YGNR is epic, a tremendous song condemned to anonimity because it's included in very weak/mediocre album and it has not a video clip to let the masses know it. That's sad but true: I was at the River Plate stadium to see VR and the VR fans themselves perfectly knew and applauded the songs with videoclips, but they didn't receive the other non-singles songs with the same intensity. If this happens with the VR fans, the conclussion for the non-vr fan masses is pretty obvious.

But they choose to make the songs they're currently making, I mean, catchy but disposable songs, ideal for radio/MTV/charts and for other kind of public but the GNR/STP fans. And because of the fact that the people in this forum is GNR fan, these new songs dont taste good to lots of us.

Well put Esteban, I keep listening and wanting to like what VR is doing but I can't think of better words than what you said above.  Not bad but not memorable either.  To me it just sounds like it has been done before.  But with an open mind and open ears I will keep checking things out.

I also agree with Younggunner, that part you mentioned of the song was really good, they should have carried that through.
