Title: Chinese Democracy listing at BestBuy.com and other online stores
Post by: jarmo on March 06, 2007, 08:24:46 AM
October 22nd edit:

Pre-order @ http://www.bestbuy.com/chinesedemocracy

October 15th edit:

BestBuy.com (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&id=pcat17071&type=page&st=chinese+democracy&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=15&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960) now has the album listed on their web site.

Best Buy is believed to be the exclusive retailer of Chinese Democracy in the USA and this is the first time they have listed the title on their site.

It seems like every other week we get somebody posting a new release date they found on an online record store's web site.

Whatever HMV, Play.com, or anybody else selling cds claims, it's not true.

The truth is, there is no release date at this moment.

When there is one, you will know about it.

I'm aware that I'm stating the obvious, but every other week I see a new thread saying "So and so says CD is coming on XXXXXXX".

yeah... maybe an idea would be to delete those threads who hold no merit?
it would avoid confusing and misleading alot of fans...

exactly. or maybe they just want to sell and select a random date, so if the album is released until that date they'll deliver the album. If not, they set up a new date. Or they really want only attention...

I just wonder why they say those dates. I don't understand those sites at all...

they do that so that some idiot will pre-order it and give them money and in return CHINESE DEMOCRACY when ever it comes out which might not be for a while.

but i, personally, think that all the different sites that Jarmo stated up there have a office pool to see who is closest  :P :-X

The words "someone told the monkey-boy who runs their site to do it" come to mind.

I don't think CD store websites are putting dates for CD out, snickering "hehehe...we'll fool them all".

It's more likely simply a matter of them using a date so people have some kind of info. I don't think they do it to get attetnion.

Unfortuantely I was one who posted one of those threads, but only once. Sorry.

Sorry? Why?

This "you can't post something if it's not official or verified by youknowwho" BS is getting quite amusing. If big labels are putting out these false dates, SO WHAT!? Ofcourse we can write ans speculate about them as MUCH as we want. Sometimes it's even FUN! Eh?

And I just love the ending: "When there is one, you will know about it."  Sure, I am also pretty sure the major labels will know about it just as soon as youknowho.

Pathetic.

Let me get this straight.

You want to post bullshit release dates and get people's hopes up because it's your right, but if I try to put an end to it it's pathetic?

Title: Re: Chinese Democracy listing at BestBuy.com and other online stores
Post by: JM24 on March 09, 2007, 10:25:18 AM
No.

People actually post what they themselves think might be the release date as well, what radio stations might be saying around the world, what different magazines might be saying, etc etc. Should all that be denied as well? What I am saying is that even though nothing is official - it doesn't mean every little speculation (what you call bullshit dates, and yeah, rightfully so) needs to be always censored. I for one am happy to see record label sites gearing up and waiting for the album as well. Even with bullshit dates. But fine, your board, you do how you please. Nothing personal. I'll just go and get my daily GN'R rumor fix somewhere else - in addition to HTGTH.  ;)

Title: Re: Chinese Democracy listing at BestBuy.com and other online stores
Post by: jarmo on March 09, 2007, 11:04:57 AM
You don't know the meaning of censorship, if you think me letting people know that HMV doesn't know anything about the album's release is actually censorship.

But it's true, you're free to read whatever fairy tales you want on other sites.

Title: Re: Chinese Democracy listing at BestBuy.com and other online stores
Post by: iloozion on March 13, 2007, 09:59:47 AM
So can we not post any release dates apart from those that come directly from GN'R? On that same basis can we not post anything remotely speculative about the band that has not come from the band?! Telling people that HMV, Play, etc might be wrong with their "release dates" is good, but I don't think people should be stopped from posting them. It is still GN'R related. I'm as pissed off as everyone else that the likes of HMV have different release dates every week instead of waiting for info from GN'R management, but one day the information is gunna be correct and there's gunna be loads of advertising /offers etc for the album, and if that info happens to be on the HMV website then I think everyone might want to know about it.

But it's not impossible for the release date to come from another source before it comes from here.

It's not impossible but why do you think it'll happen?

They put up March 6th after Axl's letter was published.

Title: Re: Chinese Democracy listing at BestBuy.com and other online stores
Post by: Howard2k on March 13, 2007, 01:38:42 PM
I don't think it'll happen, to be honest.

But I refuse to rule out every date published on the 'net just because it hasn't been published here or on GNR's website.? ?That was my point.?

It's highly unlikely that we'll be first in line to know the release date before the industry insiders.? And if the industry insiders know, it'll probably leak.? ?Just like IRS, Better, TWAT, CITR etc.?

So it might not come from Amazon.com.  But who knows - maybe it'll be a piece of corroborating evidence.

I'll bet someone on June 12th or earlier. If I win, you don't have to give me anything. If I lose, I'll buy you a movie from an online retailer. (Can't bet money or send cash to Paypal)

I'll take that bet! :)

I figured it wouldn't take long considering the better person betting has nothing to lose  :hihi:

It's really just a guess based on the mixing process and the "8 weeks" thing. And I'm pretty sure the record company does the mastering, which means that happens within the 8 weeks. So I think some members are miscalculating and are being overly pessimistic... which is toally understadable at this point.  ;D

Yeah Amazon.com & Amazon.ca are usually really good on not posting things until they're real. I've never encountered a time when Amazon.com posted something and it didn't come out when they said it would.
Also I've never seen Chinese Democracy listed on www.amazon.com or www.amazon.ca in the past & I don't see it there now. If it ever does show up on Amazon.com or Amazon.ca you can feel pretty safe that it's for real. I don't know how accurate Amazon UK is.

i was talking to a member of staff at HMV earlier today about the CD release date and he said

" we have advertised other dates before, but this is the first time we have had a concrete release date "

still bollocks if you ask me......just thought id share it

if the stores keep on fabricating release dates then does it open them up to some sort of legal action?

Wonder how long the mixing/mastering process will take.

It's been over 3 months since Del James reported the recording was done and the mixing process had already begun.

Of course in GNRland we could easily be waiting another 5-10 years but seriously, how long does an album usually spend getting mixed/mastered?

There's no BBF's solo in this song. :P

Anyways, I don't believe this for a minute. People who heard it said it's even a bad edit.

These record stores will just put any date down and change it when the date passes, they don't know the release date. Nobody does. Don't build your hopes up. Until Axl gives us an official release date don't expect to see it just appear

its definitely not coming out in september.
september is only 8 weeks away, and there's no chance in hell that they could organize and pull through the whole promotion in the remaining time.

the earliest plausible release is november...

Wasn't 8 weeks the timeline Axl talked about in his letter?

Also, there's 4 weeks more till October... So I dunno why you said it's impossible to coming out in September and/or October.

9/17 is 8 weeks from 7/23 which is in 3 weeks so it's still totally feasible....  I'm still holding on to hope we'll hear something right around when they finish up in Japan...

8 weeks was bare minimum.
you dont achieve anything by doing bare minimums.
if 8 is the minimum, then 12 weeks is reasonable.
also, it's summer. it's time of vacations. nobody give a crap about promotions while on hollidays.
the promotion will/should/could start only when the summer is over (or close to an end).
dont expect any promotion at least till mid august (and that's early).

my most optimist prediction is that..., the promotion will start in september, hopefully,
we might get some info around the VMAs... but I wouldnt be surprised if nothing happens (again).

They may have planned to release it this spring. But because of some delays (like they said on GNR.COM) had to resceduale, and a big album like this, will most likely be released in the best selling months.. I dont belive the summer months is the best idea. Spring and fall is. April, March and May. September, October November. Even Desember.

To me it looks like they are finsihing up theyr comeback tour with the World Tour. To be fair with theyr fans. Around the world. Then i guess something could happen. New tour this fall maybe? Behind the album?.. But then again. Who knows. Pure speculation

No, here's what he said...

"It takes approximately 8 weeks for an album to hit the shelves once it has been turned in to the record company. For whatever reasons it appears it may have been mistakenly inferred by management that this could be condensed to three. That being said this is not a promise, a lie or a guarantee but we do wish to announce a tentative release date of March 6th. This is the first time we have done this publicly for this album. Any and all other dates have been made up by others for their own reasons. We would like to assure the fans that though tentative everything in our power will be done to meet this date. Once it is finalized and official you will be notified. If we are delayed for unseen reasons you will also be notified as soon as possible in regard to a new date and the album will be released as shortly thereafter as is possible. We thank you for your patience.

It's only had one tentative release date.

Considering the tour just ended with no new dates scheduled and the fact that mixing was happening earlier in the year, I personally think we're closer than ever to its release.

I don't share the pessimistic views of some fans and I think the summer tour was just the beginning of something great.

Considering the tour just ended with no new dates scheduled and the fact that mixing was happening earlier in the year, I personally think we're closer than ever to its release.

/jarmo

Of course we are.? :)

Assuming that it's going to be released someday, then every day we're closer to Chinese Democracy.? And closer to death of course.? :)

But it would appear that the release is not a high priority for the band which is a shame.?

Not a high priority. If that aint a totally misinformed opinion, I don't know what is!

Axl is living and breathing this album.........
His brain would be in overdrive.........

Never mind.? ?As we established, you don't understand how the word "appear" is used and therefore cannot begin to comprehend my post.? That's why you don't understand it.

No hard feelings.? The end.

It's only had one tentative release date.

Considering the tour just ended with no new dates scheduled and the fact that mixing was happening earlier in the year, I personally think we're closer than ever to its release.

I don't share the pessimistic views of some fans and I think the summer tour was just the beginning of something great.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings.

Ok hypothetically here lets say the other fans are right CD doesn't come out in 08 , 09 , and its already 2010 with no evidence of anything , woudln't that piss you off?

Why would that piss me off?

I wanna hear the album too. As soon as possible. But it doesn't piss me off in any way if I can't hear it now, next week, next month or next year.

I'm confident that it'll be out as soon as possible and that's always been good enough for me. Nothing to get pissed off about as far as I can see.

It just seems like a waste of time to get pissed off about something like that. I don't have any control over when it's gonna be released anyway.

I also rather have an album out when everybody is happy with it, rather than something that was just put out to get money from us. I value integrity in artists.

People who take chances, try new things, don't do what everybody else is doing because that's what you're supposed to etc. That's rock n' roll for me.

It's a complete waste of time to get pissed over something you have no control over.  Agreed.  Furthermore, do we even have the right to get pissed off?  After all, the music isn't ours to demand to be released is it?

Yeah.

I don't have that "they owe us" attitude. So I can't relate to that either.

I don't demand that artists deliver. If my favorite artists want to release music, movies or whatever and share their work with the world, great.

But you would indeed be pissed off correct? Everyone has different breaking points , for you it might be a certain year or event ,for others another. Owe isn't the correct word , I just can't wrap my mind around the right word to use. But as an artist you should put out music for fans to enjoy , without your fans you are nothing. I just think if tomorrow Axl called it a day and said hey this isn't working I'm out no more GNR , then you would say they owe us.

You really need to get over this whole idea.

Judging by your name, you must be pissed that Krist Novoselic isn't putting out a lot of music these days. He must really owe you. You bought Nirvana cds and he got money from that.....

It's really no wonder Kurt, and many others with him, couldn't deal with it all when people like you are saying he has to release material for the fans.

That's where I have to say this:  Anyone that says or thinks that artists put music out for the fans is grossly mistaken.  Artists create music for the purpose of expressing a thought or feeling.  To say otherwise is flatly untrue, I feel.  That's why music should be written, for the purpose of expression.  If it is written for that reason, then it is genuine, and then the fans can have a genuine connection to the music itself.  It all starts with honesty:  with your feelings and thoughts so you can express them, and then with the artistic process.  Everything else will fall into place from that.

Jesus Jarmo thats fucking stupid im sorry , but artists are NOTHING without their fans. If you are famous , its because of famous , you're money is because of fans, your lifestyle is because of your fans. Why does Krist owe me , he didn't get a new frontman , play nirvana songs and promise an album since 2002.

Yes you didn't pay one goddamn cent for that album.

Artists are nothing without their fans? They're still artists.

It doesn't really matter if the artist has $10 in his/her pocket or $10 million on his/her bank account.

If you like the art that he/she shares with you, great.

You really need to get over this fucking owing thing soon. I know it's not easy for you to grasp because even basic comprehension seems to make no sense to you.

Fans are what make the artists successful.  The music in and of itself is created without the fans and not because of them.  If you really want to be completely honest, fans and artists have a symbiotic relationship.  They give us great music that inspires us, gives us joy and fulfillment and live shows and DVDs that entertain us.  We the fans buy their records that enables them to play tours to larger and larger audiences that gets them more money.  That doesn't mean that we are entitled to new music from them.  The music is made for the purposes of expression, not for the fans.  Therefore we are not entitled to music from artists.

:)

I hear ya, Jarmo.

I just feel very strongly that there is a fundamental flaw in the thinking that the argument of "we are owed an album" is based on:  the music is made for any other reason than the reason of expression of a feeling or a thought.  I am astonished that anyone could not see that truth.  If the music were made for some other reason, it wouldn't have any depth or possibility of eliciting an emotional response from the listener.  You have to be pure and honest in your intention behind making a song, that intention being you have something to say, or else it will ring false and no one will connect with it on any kind of deep level.  If it rings false and no one connects with it, you the artist have lost the opportunity to get a sense of catharsis that comes with honest self-expression.  What is the sense in that?

If you think Axl owes any of us anything, then you're a fucking idiot. Sorry but it's true.
None of us have ever said the band would be where they are today if they didn't have any fans. What's been said is that the band will put out this music when they are good and ready, and not try to pander to little whiny idiots like yourself who can't seem to come to terms with that fact.
When I first heard the album was coming out (I only heard about a year ago ... call me a n00b), I was hanging around the CD Rumour thread like a man posessed.
Now that I have gotten over my own initial hype, I am well prepared for the fact this album might be coming out in the next 4 months, years or decades. Either one of these eventualities I am fine with, even the dreaded "never". Saying I'm stupid for not getting pissed off sounds so fucking juvenile it's ridiculous. If CD never comes out I'll just be fucking happy with the new music we have seen.

Show me someone who thinks they are owed this album and I'll show you a fucking idiot.

I always kinda compare it to Queensryche.? They started in the early 80's, but it wasn't until the very late 80's/early 90's that they became moderately popular band with Operation: Mindcrime and especially Empire, thanks to Silent Lucidity.? They were playing bigger crowds and their albums were selling very well.? But their next album and the one after that and so on were not made for mass appeal, so they became less and less popular, and started doing smaller and smaller shows, but none of that affected them.? It was never about doing what the public wanted.? They are artists, making what they consider art.? I respect that.?

So if Axl wants to make what he considers art, even if that means supposedly millions of dollars and a decade to work on, so be it.? Make your masterpiece, Mr. Rose.? ?

Exactly, I just watched the 2002 VMA performance again and in the short interview with Kurt Loder at the end he asks Axl if we'll be hearing Chinese Democracy soon and why it's taken so long.  Axl gave what I thought was a logical reply that some people can't seem to grasp.  He said that it would be coming out, but didn't know if soon was the word and the reason it's taken so long is because they had to rebuild something that became SO BIG and replace virtually EVERYONE in or associated with the band.  Axl realizes the legacy of GNR, and he just wants to uphold that and do it justice.  If that means getting everything absolutely perfect and it taking 10, 15, 20 years, so be it.  And that was in 2002, since then Buckethead and most recently Brain have left.  So in essence the current incarnation of Guns N' Roses has only been together for about a year and a half.  I know we've heard songs like "The Blues" and "Madagascar" for 6 years now and still have no official releases but you have to realize A LOT has happened within the band since 2001.  I know people just love to bitch and moan but seriously if the quality of your life has deteriorated because Chinese Democracy has not come out yet you best seek some help.  I would love to have it in my hands or have some concrete information on it but I'm willing to accept whatever we're dealt.  I love all the new stuff we've heard so far and love the fact that they seem to be having a blast touring the past year plus.  Hang in there guys.  Good things come to those who wait.

I think you are the only one that can answer the "How long should we wait?" question.

I'll never understand some of these people...I;ve given up trying to use logic.  Some of you do understand the concept of art, no?

Some artists have integrity, and some were hand-picked by people like Clive Davis in a feeble attempt to make money.  No integrity, no character, and no conscious.  It's real easy for me as an intellectual to be a fan of the artist with integrity, the ones who were whored out by a label....not really a fan of all that.

if you think GNR would be ANYTHING without fans

they would still be an amazing band,  or they wouldn't have had fans in the first place.   you are the one who chose them, not the other way around.  Did Axl Rose ever knock on your door or call your phone and ask you to buy his records and come to messageboards and bitch about everything he does while waiting for an album that may or may not ever come out?   He's said so himself if it never happens, you wont have missed a thing.

with that said, i do believe the day will come, but it wont be until its 100% ready.  who knows when.  but until then, its not worth getting worked up about.

Fair enough. I guess what I have a problem with is the fact that so many Release Dates have come and gone (and don't give me that crap about there only being one official tentative release date - because Axl has said MANY times that it will be "out this year") and we still don't have it.
I've made my decision and that is that IF it does come out I will be downloading the entire album for free and burning it to CD for anyone who wants a copy. It's sad because if it had actually came out by the end of last year (or even this year) I would have bought multiple copies.
It's sad because unless we get a release date by the end of next month it won't be out this year either.

Chinese Democracy Put Back To 2008

Chinese Democracy, the long-awaited sixth studio album by Guns N' Roses, that has been in the making for the 13 years, could now be out early next year despite promises of definite release in 2007. Major online music retailers Play.com and HMV have now published a release date February 11 2008.

what fucking surprise :o
I'd actually view that as very good news if it does indeed come out EARLY next year.  Let's face it, the end of 2007 is near, I'd highly doubt they could get the album out this year.  I guess it's still possible but I just don't see it happening, but if it came out in Jan.-April, that'd be just fine with me.  But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Yeah in early 2006 it was gonna "definitly be out  in 2006" according to Axl via Rolling Stone

Then the tentative release date of march 2007 set by axl

now we're into 2008.......i think I've given up on this album after following it's progress since 1999

I just saw Feb 2008 in this article:

GNR CD Release Set

10/03/07
.
(antiMusic) Could it be? After many false starts and rumored release dates it does look like it is finally going to happen. That's right the new Guns N' Roses album "Chinese Democracy" has a release date. At least in the UK which usually sees releases the day before the US does. If your valentine is a GNR fan then you'll have the perfect gift next year. So you gotta have just a little more patience.
An astute reader informed us today that Amazon's UK store is now listing the release date for Chinese Democracy as Tuesday February 12, 2008. (which we confirmed) UK releases usually come out on Monday so this may be an exception or a typo but two other leading UK retailers list a February 11th release date. At press time the US Amazon site does not list the album. The UK site lists Geffen/Universal as the label. So news of Axl's split with the label might not be entirely true but obviously the label would like to recoup the millions they have sunk into the effort. Early mixes of few tracks leaked last year and were meet with rave reviews by the true believers and many expected an imminent release of the album when Axl announced a world tour late last year where he previewed some tracks from the CD. Then a management shuffle came and Axl issued a statement saying the release was coming soon.

Now that you are jumping up and down in celebration we have to tell that this isn't the first time a UK based retailer has published a release date for "Chinese Democracy". In February, HMV's website excited GNR fans when they listed a September 2007 release date. Which will all know did not come to pass. A check of their site today shows a release date of February 11, 2008 which falls in line with the Monday release for UK releases. However, to add more fuel to the fire that this is legit, Virgin Megastore's UK site also lists a 2/11/08 release date. So with three leading retailers listing a release that week we may finally, at last see "Chinese Democracy" come to pass in February.

Regarding this write-up...

(antiMusic) Contrary to what the light on their feet bozos at a certain AOHell related tabloid site think, fans are very much still interested in Axl Rose and Guns N' Roses. If the sold out concerts last year didn't prove it, the fact that this story about a release date emerging for the long awaited Chinese Democracy should, as it not only was the most read story this week but it beat out the 2nd most read story 3-1, which is quite an accomplishment considering that story was about a Britney Spears sex tape!

Its kinda strange that Brian May is plugging it on his website, Considering i would class him as an insider (sort of) There may just be some truth to this release date, If it were true id expect an announcement in the next month or so and a possible single before years end.

Hey, I'm not suggesting they're right either.? I'm just saying that the fact that they get Radiohead wrong is not proof that this is wrong.? ?

No artwork, no tracklist etc.? I think it's BS too, but there would be FAR more release dates on HMV that are correct than incorrect.

Eventually, even if by accident/coincidence, one of these rumours IS going to be right.? ?Some day we will see Chi Dem and statistically, someone will probably have got it right with all the dates flying around.? Most likely a rumour will come out, everyone will say "bullshit" but it will be the 1 in 1,000 that comes true.

of course, but the fact that they would guess at the record label and guess at a completely random date just shows you that it is a scam and they have zero credibility. Radiohead, like Gnr, is a big artist with a lot of hardcore fans. You don't yank chains like that....bad business and they are a huge retailer. The thing is, it has happened so many times with Chinese that management simply has given up shooting down the rumors. Radiohead immediately put the BS to bed. :-\

amazon.de doesn't seem to be as optimistic as their british counterpart:

A radio station in Boston mentioned October 28th, but I didn't catch all of what they were saying. I figured it was about GN'R and the record. I did hear them say Amazon in the snippet, though.

Yes. It's more than five months away, who else could they be speculating about?

This station seems to have a hard-on for GN'R, which is cool. They also brought up the Scott Weiland story, when he said Guns almost reunited in '04.

These are just shows that are confirmed already, maybe they were discussing on of these?  Maybe they were discussing pending shows?  Maybe it's the birthday of one of the DJs?  Maybe one of the DJs is leaving on October 28th?  Maybe there's a radio promo for that station around that date?  - I couldn't even speculate what else is being planned for October 28th but I think it's a bit of a long shot to link a random date on the radio to Chi Dem release.

I think Monday is the day for new releases in Europe if I'm not mistaken.  And since that site is from the UK, that could be the explanation.  Not saying the release date is legit, but nonetheless.

Play.com are just drawing these dates out of their asses. This is probably the tenth time they are giving a release date.

But anyways, albums are released on mondays here in Europe, and Play.com is a British store.

Wow...that is positive news (!!!). The American Amazon.com NEVER puts up albums, books, or dvds without being informed that a date is on the horizon. I signed up for the "Complete Making of Indiana Jones" book months back and was alerted almost 3 weeks later that I could pre-order the item.

The site says "Customer image from Dominic." It seems that they just took a fanmade picture and put it up, which seems a bit odd.

In fact, if you check, they have 4 images that have been added by website users (including one with the bicycle).

This is from the BBC website. That's the British Broadcasting Corporation and is the world's largest broadcasting corporation and is the largest news gathering system. On their website it states:

US release date for Roses album

Guns N' Roses have not released an album for 15 years
Guns N' Roses long-awaited new album, Chinese Democracy, is to be released in the US on 23 November.
The album will come out ahead of the regular Tuesday release slot in US music store Best Buy, according to Billboard magazine.
The rock band's last record, their covers collection The Spaghetti Incident?, came out in 1993.
Their new song Shackler's Revenge will debut on the soundtrack of video game Rock Band 2 ahead of the album release.
A date for Chinese Democracy to hit UK shops has yet to be confirmed.
Free pop
Another track from the album, If The World, is used on the closing credits for the film Body of Lies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.
The new album will be accompanied by a vinyl re-release of Guns N' Roses' 1987 debut, Appetite For Destruction.
Earlier this year, a US soft drinks manufacturer pledged to send every American a free can of pop if Chinese Democracy saw the light of day before the end of 2008.
The most recent release date for Chinese Democracy was March 2007, but it vanished from the schedules as the album was further delayed.
Earlier this year, the band took legal action against a blogger who leaked some of the album's tracks online.

It's hard to say which is better since we don't know why Best Buy changed it.

Is it because they were so overwhelmed with orders that the amount of copies they had available for pre-orders sold out or maybe they jumped the gun or maybe what is actually going to be released is something different from what was listed, etc.

As I write this the site is being updated...pic added to Cover A...

Why the hell is Best Buy allowing reviews on CD when it's not even out yet? They're all talking about the demos, this isn't GN'R, Slash, blah blah fucking blah. Can't they disable reviews until the product is actually released?

Future shop in Canada has it listed now for November 25th.  A little bit of advertising as well.  As soon as you click the music category, there it is.

Do any Best Buy experts know what happens if you pre-order this?  Specifically, when would it be shipped and delivered in the US?  Sorry if this has already been asked.
