Title: *POSSIBLE* *MINOR* Tidbit about CD... Will There Be A Harp?
Post by: kyrie on December 24, 2006, 12:44:49 PM
According to Harp Magazine's website, Patti Hood has done session work with Guns N' Roses... obviously, she's plays the harp...

I'm assuming this is refering to recent work since I don't really remember her being on any old stuff... but I could be wrong, anyone know?

The band has two keyboard players - a harp is not going over the top.

that could end up being the coolest song ever ?:hihi:

"FIRE AND ICE!"
quiet bits with just a harp and pitman then the band kicks into a heavy section - all three guitars blazing

They had 36 (??) songs at various stages of completion.  Harp could be on material for the 2nd or 3rd cd.  Whatever, I trust Axl's artistic flavor so whatever he puts in there it will be mindblowing.

Thanks for the info.  Wait, the harp could be part of an intro to a song. That would make sense.  Right??

Hahaha, I love how some of you overreact..

It's just a harp. I'm sure it's gonna be in one of those orchestrated songs (we know about this for quite some time) with violins, cellos and other stuff aswell. What's the big deal?

Edited: here's the quote:

Patti Hood
Her r?sum? is incredibly diverse?session work with members of Tool, Guns N? Roses, the Church?but it was Harpo Marx who made the biggest impact. On her website, she reveals she took up the instrument when he appeared to her in a dream.

Source: http://www.harpmagazine.com/articles/detail.cfm?article_id=4948&SearchWord=Patti%20Hood

As far as I know, there's no mention of Chinese Democracy itself.

btw, there is the article (Patti Hood reference is at the end)

http://harpmagazine.com/articles/detail.cfm?article_id=4948&SearchWord=Patti%20Hood

it says "session work with members of" it could mean anything

EDIT

and the explanation is on her website:

Quote
1996
Performed on three songs on Zoo/Volcano Records LUSK album, Free Mars with former and current members of Tool and Guns 'N Roses.

she played with Pitman!!

I have a friend who plays harps. Not easy to play.
What wrong with a harp? ??? It's a stringed instrument like a guitar.

8 people onstage including 3 guitar players and 2 keyboard players, and a $13+ million recording budget with a 10 year production period isn't already over-the-top?

I guess our definitions are slightly different  : ok:

It sometimes takes a break from the norm to get the sound that an artist wants, Cradle of Filth use angle grinders and Depeche Mode are classic exponents of obscure sounds.

A harp almost sound unremarkable...  does have a kind of chinese steriotypical sound to it IMHO

I personally fail to see what the big deal is here myself. ???

Axl Rose said it himself that "it's a very complex record. We're trying to do something completely different."

Why is this so hard to understand? ???

I have a feeling that most of the world is going to be very, very impressed with the stuff Axl ends up releasing. :nervous:

I already know that I'm gonna' be one of them and that this album is gonna' kick serious ass!!!! : ok:

I don't think the OP said it was a big deal but was just informing us about the person playing the harp. (Look at the subject title, it even states: "minor tidbit)." Having said that, I would assume the article is referring to Pitman.

The Harp is a cool instrument. Sometimes it's only used briefly in a song. Maybe one or two seconds as an intro. I'm sure that the way it was used it will be artistic and emphasize the song a bit.

You can hear Patti Hood on Chris Pittman and former Tool Bassist Paul d`amour band Lusk, on songs like Doctor, Mindray and My Good Fishwife.
Danny Carey is also playing drums on some songs. So i guess thats her relationship to Tool members.

Ive said it before, and will say it again! Im sure Chris Pitman has been the source to alot of great elements to the record. So dont underrate him.

And, its Pitman, NOT Pittman!

haha

That would be really cool. I listen to a celtic artist from my region in France (Brittany): Alan Stivell, and some of his stuff is really cool. I saw him live once, it's quite impressive to see a show based on that instrument. It would be a nice addition I think.

Nothing weird about a harp unless you are talking about Death metal music or even grunge. Guns is a Rock band where just about anything goes depending on the song. Aerosmith is another band where you might occasionally hear different kinds of instruments. It's really no big deal.

I used to play the harp - played for fours years or so. it wasnt as hard as i thought it would be to learn  - but maybe because I learned the piano from an early age and the harp strings are strung in the same order as piano keys.  Got bored with it after one too many recitals and scottish weddings and it wasnt exactly easy to lug around...  changed to guitar instead!  I did pick out parts of November rain on it for a while though, and the piano melody sounded really nice on the harp...  In the right places, the harp can sound great, and there is certainly room for it in different genres of music.

I liked this bit:

I thought that was a tad redundant. If you're on a GNR album then we already know you're appearing with Axl Rose.

Hi Darian!

How did you find out about me? I'm wondering how you knew about my playing
with Axl.  Please let me know.

To answer your questions, I did a tour with The Church last year (we
played at The Belly Up), I toured with a band called Lusk (we played at
The Casbah). The lead singer in Lusk is Axl's keyboard player. Right now
I'm working with a band called Stiky Side Up featuring Brad Hunt.

I actually didn't meet Axl until well after I did the session. I'm on a
song called "This I Love".  It is one of the most beautiful pieces of
music I've ever heard.

Unfortunately, I have no idea when the album will be released.

Thank you so much for your interest in my work.

Take care and Happy Holidays,

Patti

Maybe it's overanalysing, but if she updated this tidbit is because band's management (or lawyer) contacted her to ask (or just inform) that her work will indeed be used on the release. That may be an indication of activity behind the scene to a real release...

Anyways, thanks for the info about the email and the update, guys. :)

I have always wondered if the piano intro that Axl played on the 02 tour before NR was a piece from This I Love.

I really hope that piano piece is a part of a song. I also hope the guitar solo that Robin and Bucket did at Rio together is a song. I enjoyed that as well.

Here's an interesting post Gigger made regarding "This I Love" a few years ago:

Quote
Before anyone gets excited this film was released in 1998 and the song didn't feature on it! And whilst I appreciate it is old it's never been publicly known until recently. But here are the two articles on it:

Guns n Roses were offered a soundtrack spot

Sp1at.com can exclusively reveal that the soundtrack for the Robin Williams film "What Dreams May Come" was meant to feature the as yet unheard Guns n Roses song "This I Love".

Last week, in a Sp1at interview Dave Dominguez revealed that during his time working with the band the song was intended for a "Robin Williams film" but he did not give any further details. Sp1at's intrepid reporters followed this up and found out that this was the case. Sp1at contacted the office of Dawn Soler, the musical supervisor for the film, and she confirmed that this indeed was "true".

Unfortunately for Guns fans the film got its cinematic release in 1998 and did not feature music from the band. The song "This I Love" which Axl Rose described in 1994 as the "hardest" song he's written has yet to see the light of day. Although Howard Karp, who worked on the song in 2000, has told Sp1at in the past that it is a "simple piano track".

In the 7 years that have passed since the release of "What Dreams May Come" Guns n Roses have released only one new studio track, "Oh My God", which featured on the soundtrack of the film "End of Days".

Dawn Soler talks about the GnR song "This I Love"

Dawn Soler, the musical supervisor for the film "What Dreams May Come" has been speaking exclusively to Sp1at about working with Guns n Roses's Axl Rose.

When asked whether she could recollect any of the song that she probably hasn't heard for around 7 years she unfortunately said "Oh boy that was a long time ago", she was also unsure how the oppourtunity to work with Axl came along in the first place.

However, she assure me that Axl "was really into the film" and rather interestingly suggested that he "wrote the song for it". This contradicts an interview from 1994 where Axl said he had already written the song, which many fans speculated was about Dylan, the son of Axl's one time partner, Stephanie Seymour.

However the film did not make the final cut despite Dawn's fondness of the Guns n Roses track, the reason she gave Sp1at was that "the director was a pill and didn't get how cool it would be".

If any Guns n Roses fans feel the need to send hate-mail to that director then I believe his name is Vincent Ward and he lives in New Zealand.*

The new Guns n Roses album "Chinese Democracy" is currently rumoured for release between April and July depending on which reports you choose to believe. Whether the song "This I Love" will ever be released is unsure and for that we have Mr. Ward to blame.

*Sp1at feels the need to point out that it doesn't condone people sending hate-mail to idiot directors*

It's a song about his favorite pillow.

The ballad My Favorite Pillow is good, yes.....but My Second Favorite Pillow "a story of jealousy," and My Least Favorite Pillow "an angry song of anger," well, they blow the original out of the water!

I have wondered the same thing as Younggunner.  The '02 intro before November Rain live was fucking magic.  I really hope that's a part of something to be heard on a GNR album.   :peace:

How crazy would it be if I got banned for that! :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

That song has definitely been the song I want to hear for whatever reason.  It just, to me, seems like it could be one of the greatest GNR songs ever.

I don't know why exactly, seeing as we have no clue as to what its about or how it sounds, but something about it gives me high expectations.

Title: Patti Hood: The song is very special
Post by: Ulises on November 30, 2007, 01:23:03 AM
This is an e-mail from Patti Hood. She's very very nice!

Hello Ulises!

Argentina....amazing.  Your English is great.  I don't want to say too
much about the song.  I will say it's very special.  I think everyone may
have a different opinion of Axl but to me, he is wonderful.  I think I
should wait until the album is released to say anything.  I think the
album is close to being finished.

I did the session about 2 and a half years ago.  Axl was not present at
the session.

I do like Guns.  Axl puts on an amazing show and is quite a performer.
But you have probably seen him live and know this.

Out of respect for Axl, I really don't want to say much more at this time.

Take care!
Patti
