Title: A little X-mas Cheer to share with the group...
Post by: pilferk on December 13, 2002, 12:53:19 PM
This is, by far, my FAVORITE Christmas story of all time, and I know many share the same opinion.  Last year, I found a web site that happened to contain the full text, and figured I'd pass it on.

http://www.stormfax.com/1dickens.htm

Enjoy and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! :)

I love The Christmas Carol.  I was very forunate to get the chance to see it on Broadway last year starring Tim Curry as Scrooge.  It was wonderful :D.   The Christmas Carol is such an amazing story.  I also love reading The Little Match Girl during the holiday season.  I don't know why, I just find it to be such an inspirational story :-*.

yeah its my favourite christmas story.
i like the disney one with mickey and all the rest of them.also one of the old films is great too.

when i was flying to new york the other day though they had some new one that was made in like 2000 with the guy that used to be in startrek(forget his name). he was playing scrooge.it was the worst version ever, they totally ruined it a cheap american version of the story it was really bad.

I'm not too much into Dickens, but his Christmas Carol In Prose is amazing. Loved it from the age of 6 on when my mother introduced me to it.
I like it more because of the subtext rather than the Christmas theme.

Thanks pilferk, I'm all for spreading Christmas Cheer.

Twas The Night Before Christmas is my favorite Christmas story.

Just a little (ok, not so little) bump to the top.  Sure, I'm re-gifting, but what the hell.

Enjoy, all!!

It sure is! Thanksgiving (the start of OUR Holiday season in the States) is only about 3 days away.  Besides, the story is a bit long... :)  And X-mas is only about 4 weeks away.

Great. What was the fucking point in bumping it up?

So you can remind everyone that Christmas is only 4 weeks away? It's funny how so many rant on about it, a month prior, and then when it's over, wonder what all the fuss was about.

Anyway, whatever, great thread. Wooooo.

Yes. When someone expects you to have X-mas cheer a month beforehand, it does.

Chris, I did not come put a gun to your head and say "Be in the Christmas Spirit". If you don't enjoy the thread, don't read it...you have the same option EVERY other poster has.  In the states, Thanksgiving is the start, for us, of the Holiday season.  We traditionally start decorating, and shopping, for the holiday's this week.  It is, quite frankly, when we start "getting into the spirit".  I wanted to share a bit of that, again, with the posters on the board, just as I did last year.  If you wish to not partake in that, great. It's not as if the thread isn't aptly labeled, or as if I "tricked" you into reading it. Your response was completely uncalled for.

And, from your comments, it looks as if YOU could benefit from a bit of Christmas Cheer almost as much as the lead character in the story.  You say "Bah! Humbug!" to Christmas? I say "Bah! Humbug!" to Chris.

Bit of a refresher for Chris..this was your response to my post:

"Great. What was the fucking point in bumping it up?

That's what I was responding to.  I read that as "It's too early to get into the Christams Spirit"...hence, my response that I'm not putting a gun to your head and forcing you to.

"But in the story, it's actually fucking Christmas"

We'll ignore the fact that the actual "moral" to the Dickens Classic is that you should keep the Christmas Spirit alive all year and proceed directly to "No one is forcing you to read the damn thread, Chris."  Think it's too early? Don't read the thread.  It's not like it's labeled  "Guns n Roses to play Surprise Concert in Chris's backyard".

This discussion is vearing off topic and since you, as a mod, don't seem to want to keep it on topic, I will.  If you wish to discuss the issue furhter, PM me.  Otherwise, lets let the thread go back to what it's true purpose and subject was, eh?

And you're telling me that, why? All I stated was that everyone gets so wound up about it, and then it all comes to a sort of anti-climax.

Anyway, I'm bored now.

Thank you.  I watch the Christmas Carol (1951 version) nearly every year with my father on Christmas eve.  I also read the play adaption last year in Literature class as well as seeing the MSG Christmas Carol show in 2000.

It's just a great story and Alastair Sim (Scrooge) is a freaking god.

P.S. I like pretty much all of them (including the Mr. Magoo one), but the only one I despise with a passion is the 1938 version. It is terrible.

It's November.

Bah humbug

You don't understand the subtext in the story which is prevelant whatever time of the year.

Scrooge symbolizes all the greedy faceless corporate goons who have nothing and only wants to take it out on his hard working employee (Bob Cratchit) not even thinking for a second that he has a table to put food on.

Scrooge is just all alone with his money, kinda like Axl...

I LOVE the Mr. Magoo version.  It is, by far, my favorite animated version..far better than the Mickey Mouse/Disney version!  I, too, am partial to the Alastair Sim version overall.  To see such a brilliant comedic actor do the role so very well (and seriously) is a treat.  I also own the Patrick Stewart version from a few years back, and think that's passable, and I will occasionally watch the Albert Finney musical version.

Nice to find another "Christmas Carol" lover! :)

i think the written version of the story is dull like most of dickens works, especially a christmas carol...sure the moral of the story is important but why does it take a 150 year old story to tell the moral?...im sure there are other stories out there which tell the moral just as well but dont get a look in because of books like A Christmas Carol, its regurgitated year after year after year

desptie that im a bit partial to the film scrooged, the one with bill murray  ;D

Yup, I own it.  :)

In case it's not obvious, this is my favorite X-mas story.  I own a variety of versions, most of them on DVD.  My favorite has to be the Alistair Sims version....but Patrick Stewarts more recent version isn't half bad, either.   His "one man show" version is better, though (I have a bootleg DVD of the London Stage version...which, I think, has also appeared on PBS here in the states).

If you like the Muppets version, go looking for the Mr. Magoo version.  Very good. :)

I love a Christmas Carol. When I met del james in Las Vegas in 2006, I told him that he should write a screenplay for GUNSNROSES Christmas Carol. My fav version is the Muppet version. I love Robin as TINY TIM.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Luke 2:8-14

8 And there were shepherds in the same country
abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over
their flock.

9 And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the
glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they
were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for
behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which
shall be to all the people:

11 for there is born to you this day in the city of
David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

12 And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a
babe wrapped in swaddling clothes,
and lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth
peace, good will toward men.
