Title: SIXX: A.M. Band Thread
Post by: FunkyMonkey on September 21, 2009, 08:08:58 AM
SIXX: A.M. Working On 'Incredible' New Album - Sep. 21, 2009

Road Crew Magazine conducted an interview with SIXX: A.M. members James Michael (vocals) and DJ Ashba (guitar) during a recent stop on the Cr?e Fest 2 tour (which was once again headlined by M?TLEY CR?E, the band featuring SIXX: A.M. bassist Nikki Sixx). The chat can be viewed below. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

On the progress of the songwriting sessions for the new SIXX: A.M. album:

James: "The new SIXX: A.M. record, it's kind of gonna be a long time coming, just like the first one was. We have gone through a lot of different stages of it, ever since we got off Cr?e Fest last year. And I think we finally, this week, have honed in on what this record needs to be. In fact, today we wrote what is probably gonna be the first single. And it's an amazing song. I think that because the three of us are obviously so busy doing other things ? I mean, Nikki is out on stage right now with M?TLEY ? it's taken awhile for us all to be able to get our heads back on the same page and figure out what SIXX: A.M. should do next, and I think we finally honed in on it, and it's gonna be an incredible record"

On whether the upcoming SIXX: A.M. record will be based on a yet-to-be-released Nikki Sixx book?

James: "At this stage, no, it's not. But we have talked about a lot of different concepts. What I can tell you is that it's gonna be more than just a record full of songs; it is gonna be attached to some other things, and they are things that are really inspiring to all of us. And that's really all I can say at this point."

On whether the forthcoming CD will be more about all three members of the band as opposed to focusing primarily on Nikki:

James: "Yeah. In fact, I think that the last record ended up being about all three of us in different ways. A lot of the songs even were written before 'The Heroin Diaries' book came about, but they all just fit in so well, and we kind of adjusted them to work. I think that's why 'The Heroin Diaries' soundtrack so well ? we were all sharing our personal experiences with it, and we found a universal theme that kind of worked. Nikki's book happened to be the catalyst for that and happened to be the guiding force, and I think that's kind of what we're doing on this one. Because for three songwriters to be in a room writing, it can't just be about one of those songwriters; I think that it has to be about shared experiences."

What is the songwriting process with the three of you?

DJ: "It's like it was on the first one. It's three friends getting together, usually in a hotel room, sitting on a floor, eating some pizza and just brainstorming and coming up with stuff that's very real, subjects that are very serious and cool that we feel, as artists, need to be talked about a little more."

Has it been hard with Nikki having to [go out and tour] and then coming back and writing?

DJ: "No. we're used to that."

James: "I think that that was something that, when we finished the tour last year, and when 'The Heroin Diaries' soundtrack kind of finished its run, because 'Life Is Beautiful' had so much success and did so well at radio, there was definitely a lot of pressure, 'What's SIXX: A.M. gonna do next?' And I think that what we all needed to do was just fend that off, not give in to that pressure, because then I think we would have very easily fallen into that rat race ? follow-up record and follow-up single, and get it there within the amount of time that the audience is gonna remember who you are. And I think that we all kind of just pushed that back and said, you know what?! SIXX: A.M. was never about that. SIXX: A.M. was never about radio or anything. It was about doing something that the three of us really believed in."

DJ: "It's really a labor of love. As long as it becomes that and stays that, that's pretty much what me and James and Nikki always looked at SIXX: A.M. being ? kind of our artistic outlet."

James: "I think that we all had to resist the urge to just jump right back in and make one right away so that we could fit into that time window and we could get our new record out by a certain time, and I'm glad that we did. We resisted that urge and we waited until we were all inspired by something new."

On James' work as a producer and what it is like being behind the scenes and then having to go back out on stage:

James: "Being behind the scenes is my comfort zone. Being the lead singer of SIXX: A.M. is kind of an anomaly for me; it's been a blast, but I'm comfortable behind the mixing board, writing songs, working with other artists, bringing the best out of them, and I love that. Right now, I'm just finishing up a record with Taylor Momsen, who is one of the stars of the TV show 'Gossip Girl', and it's an amazing record. She just turned 16 years old, and I know that when we think of 16-year-old artists, we think of Disney, we think of Hilary Duff ? who I've also written with ? but this is something different. She is the second coming of Deborah Harry or Courtney Love; it's so heavy and so beautifully written. I'm incredibly excited about that record; it's gonna be coming out on Interscope, I think, early next year. But right now, I think that the three of us have just been finally sharing that excitement again. I would say that in the last couple of days of writing the SIXX: A.M. record, it's started to feel like it did when we first sat down and started writing 'The Heroin Diaries' soundtrack, and we were all waiting for that ? we were all waiting for that moment when it all kind of hit us and we went, 'OK, it's time.' And I would say it's time."

SIXX: A.M. is the project Sixx started a couple of years ago whose debut disc acted as a "soundtrack" to Sixx's memoir, "The Heroin Diaries". Sixx revealed earlier in the year that the second SIXX: A.M. effort is also a concept album, but that's about as far as he would go. "I can't really tell you what the concept is, because I think I'd just be kind of blowing the surprise, like telling what you're getting for Christmas before it comes," he said. "But it's gonna be a pretty powerful record. You know, sonically it does fall in line with the 'Heroin Diaries' record, but I think we're stretching out in certain ways where we can take in other styles of music and expand upon them."

Although SIXX: A.M. was initially just a studio project, a touring lineup did go on the road last year as part of the first Cr?e Fest package,

SIXX A.M.'s debut featured the hit "Life Is Beautiful".

I haven't see that many interviews with DJ Ashba and it's current so I thought it was interesting.  It looks like their album is due out early 2010...I'll give it a listen.

DJ really seems to appreciate the fans.

i dont get what the point in a follow up album is.

It should of stayed a one off. It was a soundtrack to acompany a book. in my eyes this is now a $$$ machine.

Even so, i didnt think the debut was that good anyway.

The book was much better.

Man, he's a tireless worker.  I guess that would mean he's back in LA?  Get some work in with his other band before GNR heads to South America.

NIKKI SIXX Issues SIXX: A.M. Album Update - Feb. 19, 2010

SIXX: A.M. ? the band featuring M?TLEY CR?E bassist Nikki Sixx alongside James Michael (vocals) and DJ Ashba (guitar) ? is continuing to write and record material for its second album, tentatively due before the end of the year.

SIXX: A.M. is the project Sixx started a couple of years ago whose debut disc acted as a "soundtrack" to Sixx's memoir, "The Heroin Diaries".

Commented Sixx: "DJ laid down guitars yesterday on a few tracks [for the forthcoming SIXX: A.M. album]. Today is bass and a new tune we're just finishing up.

"Some very SIXX: A.M. left turns on this album...

"I don't remember laughing this much in the studio in a long time.

"I imagine there is over two albums worth of material written, but just like last time, it will probably be a single album... The cream always rises to the top... No filler allowed."

First Ever Rock n Roll Self Help Book Debuts at #4 on New York Times Bestseller List Sixx:A.M. Single Nabs Top 5 Chart Position

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Apr 21, 2011) - The already two-time New York Times bestselling author Nikki Sixx's latest offering, "This Is Gonna Hurt: Photography And Life Through The Distorted Lens Of Nikki Sixx" (William Morrow) has just bowed in the #4 spot on The New York TimesBest-Sellers list. Written as a tribute to Sixx's institutionalized sister, the book (and companion album) explores what true beauty is and embraces our own power around that. Written entirely by Sixx with no ghostwriter, the book is part journal, part memoir, and part social commentary and features his original photography. Sixx is currently on a national book-signing tour, please see below for upcoming cities/dates. He continues to host his syndicated radio program Sixx Sense and The Side Show Countdown With Nikki Sixx (www.sixxsense.com).

"In a world of YouTube overnight sensations, Nikki Sixx has shown that he is quite the contrary. A two-time bestselling author, rock icon, and overall creative force, Nikki comes into his syndicated radio show, Sixx Sense, every day with the intent of raising the quality bar higher than even the day before. He is an inspiration to us and his fans and a testament to hard work, creativity and originality and it shows in his #1 ratings in his time slots in markets like LA, Denver and Portland. With his second Top 5 single and second bestselling book, it's a pleasure to be working with one of the most talented and creative minds in entertainment today," said SVP Programming for Premiere Radio Networks Jennifer Leimgruber.

Sixx's "other band," Sixx:A.M. is currently enjoying success with the track "Lies Of The Beautiful People." Also entitled THIS IS GONNA HURT, the album is due out May 3rd via Eleven Music. Sixx:A.M. is James Michael (vocals), Dj Ashba (guitar) and Nikki Sixx (bass).

http://Sixxammusic.com will launch in conjunction with the record, offering fans an up close and personal online relationship with the band for the first time.

"I am grateful and inspired that I have the opportunity to touch people in a unique way with my book THIS IS GONNA HURT and with the music I create with James and D.J. in Sixx:A.M. Traveling around the country, meeting fans and hearing their stories in person and on my radio show has reenergized my commitment to creating honest and inspirational content that not only serves my own creative purposes but can help and touch others as well," said Nikki Sixx.

Looks like a top 20 debut with less than 10,000 units sold in the US?

Jennifer Lopez Outsells Beastie Boys In USA
By Paul Cashmere
2 hours ago (Tue, 10 May 2011 12:15:02 +1000)

A new Jennifer Lopez album has excited American music fans more than a well overdue Beastie Boys record it would seem. JLo?s ?Love? is expected to be the highest debuting artist album on the American chart this week.

?Love? has only done average figures though, around 26,000 according to hitsdailydouble.com. Beastie Boys ?Hot Sauce Committee Part 2? only did around 20,000.

In fact, despite a high number of debuts this week, sales are poor. The biggest debut is the compilation ?Now That's What I Call Music 38? with sales of around 70,000. That is extremely poor for a hits compilation.

Adele will once again reign supreme with the biggest selling album of the year ?21? moving another 133,000 this week.

Other debuts include Steve Nicks first album in 10 years ?In Your Dreams?. Hitsdailydouble predicts sales of around 17,000.

Sade?s ?Ultimate Collection? is aimed for a Top 10 debut with 15,000 sales. Colt Ford ?Every Chance I Get? should do around 10,000. Musiq Soulchild ?Musiqinthemagiq? is also hovering around 10,000 sales, Sixx A.M. (Nikki Sixx) ?This Is Gonna Hurt? has sold just under 10,000 and Fleet Foxes ?Helplessness Blues? will struggle to debut top 20 on around 7000 sales.

It looks like the number he reported wasn't final.  It now says final at Hits Daily Double and they sold:

SIXX: A.M. ALREADY WORKING ON THIRD ALBUM

January 7th, 2012

Nikki Sixx, who doesn?t appear to have a moment of downtime thanks to the fact that he pulls double duty in both Motley Crue and Sixx: A.M. and writes books, posted a Facebook update to share some good news about Sixx: A.M. The group is already writing its third album and is possibly eyeing a 2013 release.

The band is still knee deep in promoting its latest, No. 1 single spawning album, ?This is Gonna Hurt,? but that isn?t stopping the guys from keeping their eyes on the future and keeping the creative juices flowing.

Below is the text of Sixx?s update:

Here is something that is not a rumor?SixxAM is already at work writing for the 3rd SixxAM Album.Probably a 2013 release considering the body of work were setting as a goal?We will be doing a proper video for the next single soon?..Tour options keep coming but we haven?t found the right fit yet to open up the conversations?..Keep you all posted?.Night??

I never listened to the entire first album, but thought "This Is Gonna Hurt" was a great album.  Loved a majority of it, which is saying something these days.

SIXX: A.M.: 'Are You With Me' Video Available - May 24, 2012

Earlier this month, rock band SIXX: A.M. ? which consists of bassist Nikki Sixx, guitarist DJ Ashba and vocalist James Michael ? announced its support of City Of Hope through an initiative designed to help raise money for research, treatment and education for the fight against cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Joining other celebrities such as Ryan Seacrest, Vince Gill and Sugarland in their support of City Of Hope, SIXX: A.M. offered their new music video for "Are You With Me Now" exclusively to the charity.

The clip, which was previously only viewable by fans who made a donation to City Of Hope, can now be seen below.

Sixx A.M is really nailing it so far with the new stuff.

A real band tries to do something new every record that they haven't done before.  It doesn't have to be reinventing the wheel musically but it should always be something that THEY themselves haven't done before,  Sixx A.M is doing just that with the new stuff, all 3 single they have put out all sound different.  Really good stuff!

I'm lovin the 4 songs put out so far! "Gotta Get It Right" took some time but it's grown on me. "Stars" is a great song! They covered The Cars' song "Drive" and did a super cool version of it...and the latest song they released just today called "Let's Go" is the best Sixx AM song out of all 3 albums! A straight ahead kick ass rock anthem with an awesome guitar solo by DJ. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
