Title: the making o' UYI in Classic Rock
Post by: LIGuns on July 07, 2011, 09:55:51 PM
Most Borders get it a week or so late, but the current issue has an article on the making o' UYI w/ Izzy N' Slash on the cover...I feel the behinds the scene info on UYI is much more interesting than behinds the scene info on AFD..Anything on UYI I crave, becaus I think the set is over looked..They also due a poll on if it were 1 album what would your 12 song set be..
Mine:
1-YCBM, 2-Nov. Rain, 3-Estranged, 4-LALD, 5- Locomotive, 6- RNDTH, 7-P-Crime,8-C-War,9-DC,10-Breakdown, 11-DN-bones, 12-So Fine?

I understood that part.

But we already have a special thread for the "What if the two albums were just one?" question.

The best of UYI is an interesting thread..Usually the hits make it rounded out by some fun choices...Favorite non-hit songs like Coma N' Breakdown are great choices because unlike Civil War, D-N-B,14 Years, So Fine etc they were not showcased on the extensive live tour...

Coma were played live a couple of times during the 91-93 tour....

A live-show were songs like Breakdown, Get In The Ring, Shotgun Blues, Locomotive, Don't Damn Me and such been played would've been fantastic!

I found the article really interesting (there's a similar one in Total Guitar this month, too). The Use Your Illusion set is in my opinion one of the greatest achievements in music history, and I'm glad that now it's finally getting a bit of recognition beyond the usual "Appetite For Destruction is a classic... and they made these, too" attitude.

Unfortunately, in recent years, even Axl hasn't spoken kindly of these albums.

Looking forward to reading this article.  Is this a new interview with Slash and Izzy discussing the albums or stuff taken from old interviews?  And I agree that UYI 1 and 2 are both underrated.  I do wish Axl would look back more fondly on these albums.  If they added even 1 additional song from either album to their setlist the fans would flip out for it.

I really want to read this article. I consider the UYI albums to be quite an achievement when you consider how much the band was splintering at the time. Great guitar work throughout and some of Axl's best lyrics in songs like Estranged, Don't Damn Me, Coma etc.

Yeah there is some really great writing there. An album doesn't have to be perfect too be great. There is a lot of timeless stuff on there. It may or may not have come out as well as he hoped but he, himself, has nothing to be ashamed of.

The albums aren't perfect but I really can't think of any songs I don't like on them. And I don't really count My World.

Yeah, check your local bookstore/seller like Borders or Barnes & Noble.  But if they don't have it, good luck in trying to find out if they will.  Maybe this is just Northern California/San Fran, but both places told me (even in these days of wondeful technology) that they hav eno idea what they ordered/what they are getting until the day the boxes arrive and they open them up.  Apparently this is just foro magazines though.  Still makes it even more amazing that they are still in business.  I long for the magazine section of Tower Records again, those were the days.  They always had Goldmine, Record Collector, Classic Rock, etc.
