Haha I love how the only video available for them is the It's So Easy live video from Live Era and the Governor's Ball radio options for GNR are Welcome to the Jungle, Civil War and November Rain.  I am not a fan of Randall's Island, but I might make an exception.

Cool news.

Definitely not a heavy metal festival.

Nice to see GN'R at a festival outside of the hard rock/heavy metal genre.

Nah I really don't expect that, but I would have found a live clip of the new band to show instead of that ISE video (even though I like the video a lot).

I live on the Lower East Side, so this is not far for me either, but I don't know that I can justify spending that much money for this.

yeah it is all over the place.  This festival is exactly like Metallica's "Orion" festival, packed with Brooklyn style hipster bands.  That seems to be the approach for a lot of these festivals, and while I am not a fan of any act on the bill other than GNR , I am a big fan of them playing a festival like this.  I already know there is going to be some negativity regarding GNR playing this event, but who cares?  It is something new and different, its exciting.  My only thing is do I pay the $220 now or do I risk waiting to see if they have single day tickets?  Not sure yet.

+1 on that. or some warm-up shows across the USA in early spring to let all the fans see GNR in an outside environment in their local area!

definitely a wide array of talent at this event...

was talking to a person today about this... looking at the progression of the line-up it was a hipster > hipster/mainstream > all kinds of acts over the past few years.

I loved Orion last year in AC - had a great time with all kinds of stuff to do and great bands to see. I think you will see festivals take this route in the future to branch out and reach a wider audience. not only does Governor's Ball appeal to the hipsters, but also the rock fans now with GNR.

there's been quite the backlash on the FB page of the festival with fans angry about GNR - but being unbias, I can see exactly why (in my opinion) the festival did this and why GNR agreed to do it.

hopefully this is a part of a larger tour not just a one off this summer!

p.s.   over thought of Guns throwing together an Orion-like festival in Atlantic City.

I think it's the third year. I don't know if they were doing single day tickets. They call it Governors Ball because it had originally been on Governors Island.

Anyhow, it's been used for festivals for a long time. I'll see if I can find a few shows that happened there.

This one's from the New York Pop Festival, 1970. The festival did not go over well because they set part of the field on fire. This is a pretty rare clip.

Guns N’ Roses On Governors Ball Lineup

The hard-working rock band becomes the festival’s third headliner, joining Kanye West and Kings Of Leon.  Scheduled for early June in New York City, The Governors Ball will also include Nas, Pretty Lights, The Avett Brothers, Grizzly Bear and others.

Scheduled for June 7-9 on Randall’s Island, the Governors Ball Music Festival will also host The xx, Cut Copy, Beach House, Kendrick Lamar, The Lumineers, Animal Collective, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Feist, Young The Giant, Thievery Corporation, Japandroids and Beirut.  While it’s too early to start talking about the festival’s daily schedules, words from promoter Founders Entertainment is that the day-to-day breakdowns will probably be released in May.

But regardless of the schedule, Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose appears to be very excited about the gig.  Yes, the exclamation points were really flying when the rocker talked about his newest booking.

“We’re stoked to be performing at the Governors Ball!” Rose exclaimed.  “We’re all really excited in GNR to be part of this festival, and with such talented and diverse acts in what looks to be a great weekend!!”

Beginning as a one-day festival in 2011, Governors Ball expanded to two days in 2012 and is doing three days of world class-performers this year.

Although early bird and advanced price tickets sold out within five minutes of going on sale in January, three-day regular price GA tickets and VIP packages are currently on sale.  Click here for more information.

Petitioning Tom Russell

Founders Entertainment LLC: Remove Guns N' Roses from the lineup for The Governors Ball Music Festival

Petition byDrew Salinger NY

We, the undersigned, agree that while The Governors Ball Music Festival has accrued an excellent selection of bands, musicians, and artists for its 2013 lineup, it has one fatal flaw: The presence of Guns N' Roses. While this band was already unfavorably viewed by many when it first started making music, it has become even more of a shell of its former self in the absence of every original member barring Axl Rose. The latter, one of the most frustratingly inconsistent performers of the modern era, is known best for his inconsiderate treatment of audience members and unprofessional behavior in general. As devoted fans of Governors Ball, we ask you to withdraw your offer to Guns N' Roses to perform at this year's festival and instead support talented musicians who care about their work and respective followings.

Is this a bunch of hipsters protesting that a real rock n' roll band was added to a NYC festival?

Oh the horror.

If we were living in the 1960s or 1970s, a bunch of the most influential bands wouldn't have been booked to this festival either. If it was up to these people. The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin and so on all were "unfavorably viewed by many" as well.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the lineup:  hipsters.

Have to say that sometimes it's funny to see the stupid criticisms that people make. For instance, at the Bridge School show I heard a guy say, "Axl is fat and bald now." When I turned around around I saw the guy, and he was both fat and bald.   :D

I wonder how many of the people in uproar have actually seen the band live vs how many are responding based on prejudices.

Not just his opinion when he starts a petition directed at someone's employer.

And his opinion about Axl and the band not caring about the fans and the music they make is not based on anything any band member has said in any of the interviews, tweets, posts, performances ect coming from them.  If he talked to them personally, I don't think he wouldn't have that opinion.  He owes them an apology and everybody else he tried to influence with his misinformation.

And I didn't take him seriously, I just feel bad the band has to read that shit.

    hahaha

The festival isn't really a hard rock or metal fest, so I think people are more up in arms about having hard rock being played at what I understand is a relatively softer festival. I wanna go to the show but I'm only going if single day tickets are released. I would hate it if I was there to enjoy some ass kicking music and all the petition signers acted like assholes in the crowd.   :(

The closed-mindedness I see from some of the Governor's Ball fans or attendees is quite absurd.  Some have even taken video from an off-night and tried present that as what will undoubtedly be seen at the show.  Talk about confirmation bias.

This is par for the course when it comes to hipsters and people from that Brooklyn "indie scene."  They think every successful band is shit except for Radiohead.  They are the most arrogant music fans on earth and only care about shit local bands that have been around since last weekend.  If a band has been around for more than a week it isn't cool to like them anymore.  They are the most closed minded and MISERABLE people that I have ever been around.  They suck.

I am opinionated on music, I say when I think a band sucks, but I would never try to get a band removed from the bill of a show I am going to, who the hell has time for that?  If you don't like the headliner there is an easy solution, leave early.

Music snobs have always been around. People make petitions for all sorts of crap, it's not enough to get a band kicked off because a handful of people felt like bitching about it. Surprised they're not trying to get Kanye kicked off the bill.

Metal was "indie", but no one ever went around calling it "indie metal". "Indie label" used to mean "front for the mafia".

The funny thing is, that's the same place where Metallica did Lollapalooza, and I think there was the same reaction from concertgoers.

Honestly this is a badge of honor that GNR are not being accepted by some of the concert goers here.  There is nothing rebellious or punk rock about this festival, its a bunch of critic darlings,  I don't want closed minded people liking my favorite band, which I guess makes me kind of closed minded, oh well.

Lets start our on petition to get GN'R off of this dirt field festival and playing a headlining gig elsewhere in Brooklyn or NYC on that very night...I previously mentioned the Barklay Center..I picture Axl coming out in a Jackie Roninson Brooklyn Dogers jersey after an intro of the Beatie Boys A Letter to NYC and NO Sleep till Brooklyn.

That guy is an asshole, a typical busy body who can't stand a proper rock n' roll band being on the bill. He needs to shut his mouth and let people enjoy GN'R, which they undoubtedly will. The organisers are loving the press this losers bringing to the festival, that's why they booked Guns, to get the festival more attention... So this idiot is wasting his own time in this tirade.  :P

Not that it really matter but this is what i replied .

RE: Re: Stupid Statements

Your funny, I am a gay man, I have seen the band 25+ times since 87 , I have met all the guys in the band including Axl over the yrs, old and new, and you are so further from the truth if you think you know anything, Slash quit, Axl still plays with Duff, Izzy, the band now is far more superior live than anything out there. You can petition but it won't change a damn thing. Ill be at the show enjoying every moment. !!!

Peace dude , get some facts before you make claims.

I just find it amusing that the same people who protest for equality on all issues are the same people who protest these kinds of things. I thought there was freedom of speech in this country. They seem to think that freedom of speech only applies to what they believe in.

I think GNR on the bill is excellent publicity.

The funny thing is, that's the same place where Metallica did Lollapalooza, and I think there was the same reaction from concertgoers.

I was just going to mention that. Everyone said Lollapalooza was no longer cool when Metallica headlined. I know some people who complained 4 or 5 years ago that Bonnaroo was no longer an all hippie jam band festival. Of course these same people now like dubstep or whatever the current flavor of the week is. You'll never please the hipsters. Tell this guy to enjoy Grizzly Bear and the XX and talk to GNR fans in 10 years when no one remembers who these bands were.

Also, I find it very ironic when the most closed minded people around act as the racism and homophobia police.

Sure go ahead remove GN'R from this shitty bill and have them play down the road at the new Barclay Center!! Go ahead Wake the Sleeping Giant, Piss off the Big Dog and the Machine known as GN'R will show Brooklyn how the big boys do it!!

That or get them to play at Metlife Stadium this summer. Actually, wouldn't it be great if Guns were to play in the halftime show of the Super Bowl at Metlife Stadium? I would love that!!!!

single days will likely go on sale closer to the date as they do for ALL festivals.

oh cool thanks, thats even better.   Yeah I have never purchased a single ticket to a festival before I always just buy the weekend pass, so I'm not familiar with it.  A festival has to have a lot of shitty bands for me not to buy the 3 day pass..... :hihi:

I'll be going all three, the girlfriend likes some of the other bands so we'll be there all weekend.

I've found with Coachella, Firefly, Lolla... etc. as long as the tickets don't go overboard sell out when first on sale - they release single days a few months before hand.

I'm sure some people will be selling off tickets/passes on Craigslist and Stubhub.

I don't remember the area being super big or anything when I went to Lollapalooza there. That and Central Park are probably the two places in the NY area that have had concert fests the longest in America.

Wonder if GNR are going to do a summer shed tour, the outdoor amphitheaters, or stick to the ball courts and hockey rinks. The only problem is that some of those venues are near residences, and the cities have the curfew crap...

But since the festival hasn't announced their schedule yet, we can't be 100% sure...

Kings of Leon have the 7th listed on their site, so we know that's not GN'R's date....

How do you guys think Guns are going to be treated by fans at this festival?  Based on the majority of the lineup, its going be mostly a bunch of douchy hipsters who may have little tolerance for Axl.  I live in the area, and am thinking about getting a one day ticket, but honestly not sure I want to spend that kind of money when I don't really have much interest in seeing any of the other bands. Kind of feel like most classic hard rock fans may skip out too.  As we know, there's plenty of hatred for Axl out there.  On the other hand, this is really a chance to change minds and blow some of the doubters and haters away.  Hope it turns out well.

This is on Randall's Island. I've attended a few concert/festivals there over the years. Odds are 99% there is just ONE stage.

And this is NOT to whine and bitch, I'm just being real: getting to the island and then getting to the show/concert area is a trek. Vehicular traffic is always a bitch interboro. The shuttle buses from 125th are somewhat okay, but waiting around and piling on the buses are a bitch. And once you get on the island, where the buses drop you off, it's still a walk to the concert area. Bottom line, add at least 30-45 minutes minimum to getting to the show depending on the time of day and where you're coming from.

And don't get me started on leaving. The later you are in the evening, the bigger the clusterfuck. Up on Lexington, 1-2-5......

Upside, yes, GNR and its fanbase, definitely out of it's comfort zone. Hit or miss.

Downside, last band on. Getting out of there. Weather.

Oh me? Not going. Too poor, too old.

Now get off my lawn.

Anyone else looking at VIP tickets - or had VIP tickets in the past at a festival?  Do you think it's worth it?  How much better will the viewing area be? Would it be worth it if you value not waiting in line for alcohol / clean washrooms?

Interesting to see how this all pans out. No way will they only do a 90 minute set, and inevitably the crows will want them to fail, so it could be a lively one! I'd definitely go if I lived remotely near (I'm in England) to see how it goes down. Having said that I was there the last time they played the Leeds festival over here and it was hard work. The band played well, but the crowd were fucking terrible. Full of posers and dicks who had no enthusiasm seemingly for anything all day, let alone Guns N Roses. It was like being in a field of mannequins!

Weirdest thing though was the amount of people in GNR 'fashion'  shirts (You know, the ones people buy from fashion chains that are made to look old already, who have no interest in the band but want to look 'rock n roll') that clearly hadn't even watched them! As I was leaving I saw people coming out of other tents wearing them! Beggars belief really.

Anyway, I digress. I'd go if I was in the area- it's a GNR show, and let's face it, one way or another they're NEVER dull!

I saw Lolaloplooza there years ago..Multiple stages setup in a large dirt field..There was stadium searing along the main stage...Overall it was an awful concert experience..Multiple trains in the NY summer heat, than shuttle busing..All went smooth but it was still a hassle to get to.. Than to sit through hours of numerous genres of music that don't interest me to wait for the headliner, I couldn't wait for it to end..Can't believe GN'R are playing in my area and I'm not psyched!! I hope they play some NY "warm up" shows..

If they do keep the sets to 90 minutes, it'll definitely be different from regular GN'R shows.

I think the closest we've been to that kind of set lengths recently would be the acoustic/surprise shows...

This. Maybe it's old age, but even though I'm in the city I've no interest in this cluster-F - venue's a pain in the ass, and I have no idea who any of the other performers are on that Saturday schedule, so can't even imagine the lousy mood I'd be in by the time GN'R came on.

Now, give me a club show the Friday before, and I'm all in. Or another Vegas show - I'd sooner hop a flight across the country than deal with a summer festival show in my own backyard.

I am also debating whether or not I am going.  I will likely not decide until the week of the show.  For one those tickets are pretty steep and although I can afford it I am going to see if I can scalp them cheap the week of.

Is there a chance GN'R is bowing out of this show? The only reason I ask is that I'm hearing rumors that Aerosmith might be added to the bill. Seems to me like there's not much room for another big act unless one needed to cancel (Aerosmith would be a pretty plausible alternative to GN'R, rather than Kings of Leon or Kanye). Just a rumor concerning Aerosmith at the moment, though...nothing more.

Where did you hear that? I haven't heard anything like that about GN'R.

Edit: In fact, I asked Fernando and was told it's not true.

Well...again, I said the rumor that I heard was that Aerosmith might be added to the bill...that's all I heard. Just makes me wonder where they'd fit a big name act like that when the festival has its headliners set to go. If it's true, perhaps they'll play the same night as GN'R and they'll bump Nas before Kayne. Just speculation...nothing more.  :peace:

I googled "Aerosmith Governor's Ball New York" and came up with zip so your "rumor" isn't even on the Internet which isn't the beacon of truth to begin with.

Maybe Fernando hasn't heard about it yet?  They seem to be playing there at some point this summer, according to Joey Kramer.  Maybe on a different night or at a different festival, but I only see two?

I guess we'll know soon enough.

Let me ask you this. If a band says they'll play the same venue as GN'R in the summer, is it immediately assumed they'll be playing on the same day or weekend as GN'R?

The festival announced their third headliner weeks ago and it's GN'R.

Ok, I stand corrected. There is some rumor out there. The motorcycles hint makes me think Sturgis but that's obviously not near Randall's Island.

Look...you know how you have your "insiders" here at HTGTH? Well, I have heard from "insiders" from the Aerosmith camp that they will be playing Stugis in August as well as MGM in CT. on July 7th. This "insider" (who happens to be just as respected as Jarmo in the Aerosmith fan community) claims he "jumped the gun" by posting this this morning. We'll see if it comes to fruition. The reason why I simply asked if there was any BUZZ about any cancellations, etc. was because this "insider" also said to look out for an Aerosmith announcement regarding The Governor's Ball Festival on Randall's Island. He's be asked (probably by the band...as he often has) to delete his comments regarding ANY of this info (which he did, shortly after he posted it). However, the Joey Kramer tweet is telling, perhaps.

If I lived anywhere even remotely close to this, and certainly anywhere near NY, I would be all over this. So what if it's a festival, sometimes they can be better than arena shows if the atmosphere is right. I always view festivals as like a team kind of mentality, where your team "GN'R" are going up against all of the others, and they always win and blow all of the other's offstage.  : ok:

I said to myself I would make the trip from UK the next time GN'R played NYC, however I can't decide on this. In my mind there is nothing worse than seeing your favourite band when large amounts of the audience is not into them. Also I'm all for diverse line ups but this one does not work in my opinion.

I like a crowd with passion that jumps up and down and gets sweaty. My feeling is that this is a rare occurrence in New York though.

Do we know how long GN'R will play??

I'd be tempted to fly over for there own show in the NYC providing work commitments would allow.

This website shows a schedule for the Governors Ball.  I don't like how some of the bigger acts are matched up against each other - I think when it comes to the final handful of big names for the day - the set times should be alternating, so you get a chance to see all of them.

Anyways, my problem here is that I'm a fan of Nas and have never seen him live.  He's matched up directly with Guns.  Do I take the chance that Guns don't come out on time & hopefully catch both acts (or at least a few songs by Nas)?  I probably won't get much sympathy here as most of you probably don't give a f*#k about rap music.   :hihi:

I might need someone who's attending to text me when they hit the stage so I can run over!

ha, just messing with you.  I would be shocked if GNR came out right on time, you could probably get away with catching some of both if you don't mind missing a few GNR songs, I am assuming you have seen GNR before.  I have done stuff like that at festivals before, it usually works out.

That is a great review, seems like a GN'R show for the books. All the reports I've been hearing as well seems to indicate that everyone was rocking with the band, and a brilliant show ensured in NYC. I love it when a show is as successful as this, especially since it was a festival date as well.

Gun N' Roses Bring Hard-Rock Theatrics to Governors Ball
Axl Rose and company rise above the muddy field with an arsenal of hits

Follow us: @rollingstone on Twitter | RollingStone on Facebook It took an act of God at Governors Ball on Friday ? an assailing, miserable rainstorm and frightening flooding ? to create a miracle on Saturday night. And yet one happened, it really did.

Axl Rose started a show early.

Indeed, the Guns N' Roses frontman bucked his own proud tradition of intractability ? one that has led to countless hours of empty stages and show delays since the band?s 1985 formation ? by taking the New York festival?s main stage seven minutes before the headlining band?s scheduled start. What?s more, Rose actually appeared engaged with his surroundings; he and his hard-rock cohorts barreled straight into the largely under-30s audience with a throaty and joyously grandiose introduction of "Chinese Democracy" (title track of the hysterically overlabored 2008 album), unleashing flames from the drum riser as Rose slid into that famed falsetto with impressive ease. From there, the band kept no cards at their chests; their second song was their career-maker, 1987?s "Welcome to the Jungle," delivered with the revelation of their entire arsenal of stadium tricks, the silly staples of the hair-metal era that they rightly make no apologies for: the videos of scantily clad dancers, the double-necked guitars, the liberal stage fireballs and fireworks, even that snake dance.

10 Things Duff McKagan Learned on the Summer Festival Circuit

Guns N? Roses nonchalantly played all the hits for the mud-caked Governors Ball masses, and kicked in early with a slew of Appetite for Destruction immortals. "It?s So Easy" boasted even more fireworks (those were frequent enough in the set to double as kick drums) as Rose dipped down an octave-and-change with aplomb. (He truly does sound great, still, even if he insists on wearing cheesy t-shirts of women with cartoonish bare breasts. Or perhaps these are his Samson-esque source of vocal strength.) "Mr. Brownstone" slid sludgily into their stalwart 1991 cover of Paul McCartney and Wings? "Live and Let Die," fireballs roaring from the stage again. Then came the short sprint into "Rocket Queen," which boasted an extremely Eighties video montage of models gyrating in leather and fishnets before a stark white backdrop, and a comfortable spin through "Sweet Child o? Mine" that was matched by the audience?s rapturous participation. (Lead guitarist DJ Ashba, clad in a familiar top hat, sported a distinct "I crushed that" smirk at the end of "Child." Rose, as always, remained unimpressed.)

This familiarity is what allows any iteration of the band to headline a festival 26 years after the release of Appetite for Destruction; the best and worst to be said of them is that they sound exactly, resolutely, safely like their records. There is no experimentation wanted or received from anyone onstage (and it?s not of interest to fans either). Guns N? Roses is, famously, Axl Rose and whoever he hasn?t fired that month; his iron fist and business savvy in the current lineup is apparent in every note they play. He is the only original member left (keyboardist Dizzy Reed dates the next furthest back as a contributor to 1991?s Use Your Illusion I and II) and the rest of the musicians are, while clearly technically talented, expected to play with note-for-note faithfulness the familiar chords and solos of classic-lineup stars Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, etc., like a cover ensemble of their own catalogue. "November Rain," one of the many Illusion I offerings, broke down with precise familiarity, from Rose?s soft piano intro to the plaintive Slash guitar solo, to the frenetic coda of foreboding chants and cataclysmic strings. Their glimmering cover of Bob Dylan?s "Knockin? on Heaven?s Door" (from Illusion II) still sprawled near healthy double-digits; "Nightrain" chugged along right on schedule, without brakes or extra coal.

The highly enjoyable, completely predictable set ended with the group?s longtime finale from Appetite: "Paradise City," an entreaty to the libidinous that Rose remains skilled enough to have already made redundant. At its bawdy, bright close, confetti canyons spread glitter across the crowd and fireworks lit the night, the latest in a healthy half-dozen times in the set. Rose almost seemed to grin back at the crowd, but there was no need ? he?s seen this all before, and he knows he will again.

I agree it was a really nice review. Sure it is done in a sarcastic and tongue in cheek manner, but I got a very positive vibe from it, so I'll take it. Seems like it was an honest review as well, which holds truth as many fans who attended also have reported how it was a fantastic positive Guns performance.

Pop Heroes Made and Remade
By JON PARELES
Notoriety was the key to headlining the Governors Ball Music Festival last weekend on Randalls Island. It used to be the making of a pop hero, and sometimes it still is.

Saturday?s main-stage closer was Guns N? Roses, the band led by a vociferous bad boy of yesteryear, W. Axl Rose. Sunday?s finale ? and by far the biggest draw, if tabulations by the festival?s scheduling app were any indication ? was Kanye West, the rapper and producer who has so often acted up in the spotlight and then written songs about fame-induced folly and megalomania. He had a new one on Sunday, modestly titled ?I Am a God.?

They both have long, tangled back stories that have become incentives for attending their shows; see it live before it?s reported by the tabloids. And their music was set at full blast. They?re two generations of pop hero: Mr. Rose stays shameless while Mr. West is (sometimes) repentant.

At Governors Ball they avoided the self-destructive rants of past occasions. Mr. Rose came back onstage after his band?s big fireworks display to announce, ?I love New York.? And when Mr. West got to the spot in his song ?Clique? where, he said, he usually starts complaining and justifying himself, he instead touted his artistic independence. ?We just made some real music,? he said of his album ?Yeezus,? due for release next Tuesday, going on to insist that he didn?t care about selling a million albums or tailoring songs for radio play. ?When I listen to radio, that ain?t how I want to be no more,? he declared to roars of approval, though radio stations might be resentful.

If Mr. West was out to steamroll the acts that came before his ? 63 others over three days ? he came pretty close. His new songs relied on brutally stark synthesizer riffs and drumbeats, closer to industrial dance music than to current hip-hop, and they were delivered on Sunday through a sound system with bone-rattling bass. Most of his older songs were remixed along the same lines: all deep, ominous punch as Mr. West shouted nearly every line.

He spent most of his performance on a small stage in the audience, wearing a loose gray outfit that made him look something like a penitent; for those who could see him, he was heaving back and forth, working up a sweat. But he set aside the beat for two long ballads with only piano chords and his computer-tuned voice: ?Heartless,? about a breakup, and ?Runaway,? a toast to boorish behavior. Bragging and materialism are at war with self-consciousness and self-criticism in Mr. West?s songs; a hero of ambivalence, he slammed home all the contradictions.

Guns N? Roses, by contrast, unabashedly celebrated excess. The group, which now consists of Mr. Rose and sidemen rather than the band of comrades from its 1987-91 heyday, is larger, slicker and even more cartoonish than it was in its early years. Mr. Rose and the band?s three guitarists struck rock-star poses, songs indulged themselves in long buildups and guitar interludes, and the stage spewed fireworks and confetti. It was an older school of rock-hero behavior, full of preening and bombast. Yet once Mr. Rose got his voice up to full, abrasive yowl and screech, Guns N? Roses was the embodiment of nostalgia-enhanced memories, a relic reanimated like a woolly mammoth suddenly charging across the tundra.

Kings of Leon, whose headlining set was rained out on Friday, were squeezed into Saturday?s lineup for their first New York City show since 2010. They didn?t play hero; they worked their instruments and let their songs ? brooding Southern rock updated with hints of punk agitation or U2?s arena-scale hooks ? speak for themselves.

Most of the rock bands presented themselves with that kind of modesty. Gary Clark Jr., a blues-rocker from Texas, made his songs slash and scream and erupt with distortion, communing with his guitar rather than telegraphing the music?s drama. Divine Fits ? the songwriting alliance of Britt Daniel, from Spoon, and Dan Boeckner, from Wolf Parade ? did some clowning onstage, but never hid the rigorous neatness of songs that use every detail of an arrangement to tell their stories.

Deerhunter?s guitarists just stood there casually as they showed how two or three chords could swell into clouds of noise evoking specific eras: garage-rock, psychedelia, postpunk. A different variety of postpunk ? revved up by breakneck, pointillistic guitar patterns ? came through in galvanizing sets by two British bands, Bloc Party and Foals. Haim, a band led by three sisters from California, channeled guitar patterns into a sunnier style, like Fleetwood Mac thinking about the Feelies.

Crowds sang along on folky, toe-tapping ditties from the Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men, and mouthed the lyrics more quietly for the whispery, skeletal, lovesick pop of the xx, who used lasers and smoke to create an eerie virtual canopy over a big muddy field. Yeasayer, whose songs delight in intellectual constructs and musical convolutions, faced happy, hands-in-the-air fans who picked up the band?s elements of disco and electronica and danced to them.

The mesh of the programmed and the hand-played was one through-line of the festival. Erykah Badu?s tart, sassy voice humanized the two-chord vamps generated by her laptop-wielding band; Alt-J drew subtle but clear connections between folky picking and the blipping patterns of electronic dance music. Animal Collective played a mesmerizing set, mingling live and electronic instruments, in which loops and overlapping vocal lines became euphoric incantations. Thievery Corporation slipped programmed elements into live-sounding reggae and funk. Robert DeLong, a one-man band using loops and samples, constructed pop songs that he then zapped with the assaultive noises of dubstep. Crystal Castles reached back to the punk-tinged synthesizer riffs and out-of-tune vocals of the 1990s rave era, though it also had more current, consonant tracks. The festival also had some unaccompanied DJs ? Dillon Francis and Griz ? who played inventive, genre-hopping sets; there was a Silent Disco tent, where dance music was broadcast to headphones all day.

While most of the festival?s rockers weren?t acting heroic, its rappers were. Azealia Banks ? the best dressed performer by far ? had fans shouting encouragement as she presented herself in song after song as a ?bad bitch,? bragging about raunchy exploits and picking fights, in a rapid-fire, indefatigable delivery that rivaled the twitchy momentum of her backup tracks.

Nas, whose set split the Saturday night audience with Guns N? Roses, presented himself not as a bad guy but as a chronicler and preserver of hip-hop. He reached back to his 1994 debut album, ?Illmatic,? for details of ghetto life and worked his way forward to grown-up reflections. Freddie Gibbs presented himself as the keeper of a disappearing genre ? gangsta rap ? but turned traditionalism into swagger, performing bare-chested and rattling off verse after verse a cappella, barely taking a breath. Kendrick Lamar?s album, ?Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City,? doesn?t endorse the gangsta life he observes, but onstage he barked his songs as if they were triumphal rather than wary.

The other headliner was mud: a result of the daylong deluge Friday. Festivalgoers tramping through shoe-swallowing mud, and dancing through it, may have been the real heroes.

It sounds like Axl was looking to win the audience over, tightened the setlist up, and everyone went home happy that night. Glad the weather held up for them. The 10 people who complained about GNR playing when the lineup was announced, were drowned out by the thousands who got to enjoy it.

Just got back from NYC - that was the best I've heard Axl sound live (4th time).  Everyone around me - and anyone I spoke to at the festival/hotel/around the city all had positive things to say about Guns.  I figured Axl came out early in order to include as many songs as possible in the set... I know I appreciated it!  Great concert!

It sounds like Axl was looking to win the audience over, tightened the setlist up, and everyone went home happy that night. Glad the weather held up for them. The 10 people who complained about GNR playing when the lineup was announced, were drowned out by the thousands who got to enjoy it.

I wouldn't say I complained, I was just disappointed they were doing an area festival iwith no word of a headlining concert..
Most likely my comment about festivals went unnoticed..so glad I was able to see GN'R at the "Bowling Alley" show! Saw you there as well.. Quite the gig you got.. : ok:

Maybe the poster wasn't talking about you, but the people who were campaigning against having GN'R play at GovBall.

So if someone tells you that GN'R always shows up late and cancels all their shows, tell them you got a news flash for them. The world isn't flat and they need to get their other fatcs straight before opening their mouths...
