Title: Your "Greatest Hits" and/or "Live Era" dream tracklist(s)
Post by: conny on June 18, 2003, 07:11:34 PM
...or: what ?Live Era? should have been. I know it?s been done quite a few times, so I?m putting this in the ?Dead Horse? section.

I?d like to hear your opinion on this compilation, maybe you?d like to post your perfect ?Best Of? in here too? I mean not just the songs you want on it, but also the order of the songs, you know?

Anyway, here?s mine. I did not include any cover versions, because this should be a real Guns N? Roses ?Best Of? with original GN?R-material only.

CD 1:

1.???Welcome To The Jungle
2.???It?s So Easy
3.???Mr. Brownstone
4.???Nightrain
5.???You?re Crazy (Original)
6.???Think About You
7.???Sweet Child O? Mine
8.???Patience
9.???Rocket Queen
10.???My Michelle
11.???Don?t Cry (Original Lyrics Demo)
12.???Paradise City

Hidden Track: One In A Million

CD 2:

1.???You Could Be Mine
2.???Locomotive
3.???14 Years
4.???November Rain
5.???Civil War
6.???Breakdown
7.???So Fine
8.???Estranged
9.???Get In The Ring
10.???Don?t Damn Me
11.???Dead Horse
12.???Coma

They should've put the only live performance of "Bad Apples" on it.

Also, I would've liked to have heard live versions of "Locomotive" and "Breakdown" on it too.

As far as the AFD and GNRL songs, I would've liked to have had more performances with Steven on drums.  Steven was only on three songs on Live Era.  His drumming on the AFD and GNRL songs blows away Sorum, especially the beginning of "Mr. Brownstone".

Why buy a double GNR "best of" when they only have three "real" albums? Beats me...

It's hilarious that anyone would think of putting out a 2 disc GNR's greatest hits collection, when they only have three full albums worth of original material.  The truth is, I think they have barely enough "hits" to warrant ONE full greatest hits CD (and by "hits", I don't mean great songs.  I mean well known songs in terms of the general public and the casual GNR fan).

With that in mind, from strictly a business perspective, here is what I would put on a GNR greatest hits CD....

1 - Welcome To The Jungle
2 - Patience
3 - It's So Easy
4 - You Could Be Mine
5 - Don't Cry (original)
6 - Yesterdays
7 - Sweet Child O' Mine
8 - November Rain
9 - Knockin On Heaven's Door
10 - Estranged
11 - Paradise City
12 - Ain't Goin Down (previously unreleased demo)
13 - Hearbreak Hotel (live)

The last 2 tracks are for the "die-hard" fans who have all the albums and normally wouldn't by a greatest hits record filled with songs they already have.

I also hate to put a cover on there (KOHD), but I had trouble filling space, and I figured since Aerosmith did it on their first greatest hits album, what the hell.

The original albums are best-ofs in themselves.  I mean, look at conny's two-CD track listing - 10 out of Appetite's 12 songs are on there.

Title: Re: Your "Greatest Hits" and/or "Live Era" dream tracklist(s)
Post by: Mattman on July 25, 2003, 03:58:40 AM
Well, ok...then if that's the case, I'll just do a one CD greatest hits, because I don't think a casual record-buyer will want to spring for a double CD best-of from a band that only has four albums of original material (although it's a shame that you put those restrictions on cover versions, because "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" was one of GNR's biggest hits and there's a lot of great cuts on the Spaghetti Incident album.  Ah, what the heck, I'll include KOHD - it's one of the quintessential Guns N' Roses songs).

That said, here's my track listing for the best of Guns N' Roses...

1. Move To The City
2. Welcome To The Jungle
3. It's So Easy
4. Nightrain
5. Paradise City
6. Sweet Child O' Mine
7. Patience
8. Used To Love Her
9. Civil War
10. November Rain
11. You Could Be Mine
12. Estranged
13. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
14. Coma

That's all that'll fit on an 80-minute CD, but I think it's a reasonable sampler.  It becomes a little ballad-heavy on the second half, but there were so many great ballads that I didn't want to leave out at the expense of some great rockers.  That's why I present this special CD box set that presents all the great lost Guns N' Roses songs heard exclusively hear.  The CDs in this 5-disc set are titled as follows:

CD 1: Appetite For Destruction
CD 2: GN'R Lies
CD 3: Use Your Illusion I
CD 4: Use Your Illusion II
CD 5: "The Spaghetti Incident?"

 [hihi]

Its difficult to put all the best gnr tracks onto 1 cd so I'll go with a 2 cd best of

CD 1

1. Welcome To The Jungle
2. Its So Easy
3. Live And Let Die
4. Mr Brownstone
5. Yesterdays
6. Knocking On Heavens Door
7. Sweet Child O Mine
8. You Could Be Mine
9. Estranged
10. Out Ta Get Me

CD 2

1. Civil War
2. November Rain
3. Dont Cry
4. Pretty Tied Up
5. Dont Damn Me
6. Garden of Eden
7. Patience
8. Rocket Queen
9. Nightrain
10. Paradise City

Special Hidden Tracks

1. Madagascar
2. The Blues
3. Chinese Democracy

I thought I'd add the best 3 of the Chinese Democracy as hidden tracks but if we aint counting New GnR stuff, just leave them off the list. [peace]

I tryed to reflect the recent set list from the tour cos WTTJ and PC should always start and end a show so putting them in that order would give new listeners an idea of what seeing GnR live is like. [ok]

CD 2 looks the stronger out of the 2 though, I'd prob have that in my CD player the most outta the 2 [hihi]

The first disc should be the songs that have videos.   and the second disc should just have a bunch of very cool and or underrated songs.  Has anybody ever seen Aerosmith's Gems album.  It's a compilation of songs that weren't singles and it rocks much more than theit hits album,  anyway here I go:

Disc: 1
Welcome to the jungle
Sweet child o' mine
Paradise city
Patience
You could be mine
Don't cry
Live and Let die
Yesterdays
November rain
Garden of eden
the Garden
Dead horse
Estranged
Since I don't have you
It;s so easy (live)

Disc: 2
Mr. Brownstone
Nightrain
Rocket queen
Reckless life
you're crazy (from lies)
Right next door to hell
Perfect crime
DOuble talkin jive (live tokyo)
Coma
Breakdown
Locomotive
Pretty tied up (live era)
Estranged
Human being
Ain't it fun
I don't care about you
Sympathy for the devil

May not fit but, oh well...

C.

I personally think this greatest hits thing is a bad idea but after seeing the line-up they should at least get a more decent line-up. I think the greatest hits cd should be more like this:

  1. Welcome To The Jungle
  2. Nightrain
  3. Paradise City
  4. Sweet Child Of Mine
  5. You're Crazy
  6. Patience
  7. One In A Million
  8. Live And Let Die
  9. You Ain't The First
10. Dead Horse
11. Garden Of Eden
12. Don't Cry (original)
13. November Rain
14. Estranged
15. Yesterdays
16. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
17. Civil War
18. You Could Be Mine
19. 14 Years
20. Ain't It Fun
21. Since I Don't Have You
22. Sympathy For The Devil
23. Oh My God

Plus two songs recorded but left off "Chinese Democracy" to round it out to an even twenty-five and give those who have every album and single a reason to buy the greatest hits cd.

Now I again say I'm against this greatest hits cd. I'm just showing how I'd deal with a greatest hits cd for Guns n' Roses. IMHO I think companies should wait until a band is officially disbanded to release a full greatest hits album. Just look at how many greatest hits things bands like Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones have.

I think these kids need to go and buy each fuckin' GNR album- stick them on their scrawny cd players and then get blown away to what REAL music is!
There are toooooooooo many kids out there who haven't a clue- what REAL MUSIC is!

I think Ain't It Fun shouldn't of been cut out!
C***Suckers!
EVERY GNR song tells us a bit more about GNR!
So EVERY GNR song should hit the GH!
Not that the GH should of been released like but still... i got it to complete my collection!
I was pleased about one thing though- Sympathy For The Devil was on!
Great Classic track!

On  the live era- i think they should of had a WIDER range of the best GNR songs- i'm sure November Rain or KOHD (etc.) on Live Era was played at it best at some point in the history of GNR, and those really good performances should of made the cd!

I would of loved to have ATTITUDE on the live era!
Cos that live- KICKS!
I'm pleased they put Dust N' Bones on!

However we can't complain about these cds because we can't change 'em!

OIAM on GH= not a good idea!
You know the stick it got- only us REAL fans deserve to listen to that AMAZING song!

I think GH should have been something that tells people what GN'R was, an album that tells the story of the band and the bandmembers. It includes the most important and best moments. These are not necessarly my favourite tracks, but IMO the mile stones in GN'R's history. My tracklist:

1. Welcome to the Jungle
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Sweet Child O' Mine
4. Reckless Life
5. Rocket Queen
6. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (an early live performance)
7. Paradise City
8. One In A Million(!)
9. Civil War
10. You Could Be Mine
11. November Rain
12. 14 Years
13. Pretty Tied Up
14. Coma
15. Sympathy For The Devil

Damn, it's probably too long for one cd...

I would have like to have seen Live and Let Die, Bad Obsession and maybe The Garden on the Live Era album.? While on the subject of the Live Era album, don't you think some of the tracks sound like they were taken from the Use Your Illusion I & II DVDs eg. Move To The City.

I know theres already a topic similar to this one, but I wanted to know, what tracks do u think were missed off the Live Era album.? The tracks that stand out to me are Coma, Civil War, Bad Obsession & the Godfather Theme.? I was wondering if u guys thought the same or had any more suggestions for tracks that should have been on the album.

personally i am quite please with the live era cd mixes of songs. and i have to agree to a couple of you here that more songs from the illusion album should be included, like the very underrated right next door to hell, double talkin jive.

so instead of picking "your greatest hits and/or live era" dream tracklists, i will pick the songs that i think we need to listen or promote more often as a guns n fucking roses fan  ;D

1. It's So Easy
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Right Next Door To Hell
4. Double Talkin Jive
5. Don't Damn Me
6. The Garden
7. Coma
8. Locomotive
9. Estranged
10. Look At Your Game Girl
11. Down On The Farm
12. Rocket Queen
13. Since I Don't Have You

I think this is good:

Disc I
Jungle
Its So Easy
Nightrain
Out Ta Get Me
Mr. Brownstone
PC
My Michelle
Think About You
SCOM
Rocket Queen
Reckless Life
Move to the City
Patience
Used to love her
Your Crazy (slow)
One In a Million
Disc Two
Dust N Bones
LALD
Don't Cry
Perfect Crime
Bad O.
November Rain
Dead Horse
Coma
Civil War
14 Years
Yesterdays
KOHD
Pretty Tied Up
Estranged
YCBM
Since I Don't Have You
Hair of the Dog

I'm leaving off a lot of songs I really like, like "Breakdown" and "Locomotive." But this would be good for a definitive best of on a two disc set--like the new Motley Crue album "Red, White and Crue."

3.???Mr. Brownstone
4.???Nightrain

12.???Coma

GREAT...only need to add Move to the city ( LLAS )

I decided to make a 2-disc Greatest Hits with the songs in chronological order as well as track listing order from the albums. I have all of Appetite For Destruction and 2 songs from GN'R Lies on the first disc, and then the second era of GN'R on the second disc. It all looks like this:

Greatest Hits [Disc 1]

1. Welcome To The Jungle
2. It's So Easy
3. Nightrain
4. Out Ta Get Me
5. Mr. Brownstone
6. Paradise City
7. My Michelle
8. Think About You
9. Sweet Child O' Mine
10. You're Crazy
11. Anything Goes
12. Rocket Queen
13. Patience
14. Used To Love Her

Greatest Hits [Disc 2]

1. Live And Let Die
2. Don't Cry (Original Lyrics)
3. November Rain
4. Coma
5. Civil War
6. Yesterdays
7. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
8. Get In The Ring
9. Estranged
10. You Could Be Mine
11. Hair Of The Dog
12. Sympathy For The Devil

P.S: I wanted to put either "Breakdown" or "Locomotive" on Disc 2, but unfortunately either would make the disc too long to burn. The 3rd era of GN'R (aka "new GN'R") has not officially released anything other than the mediocre "Oh My God," so I have not included them in this. Otherwise, "Better" would certainly be included and I love "Madagascar" and "TWAT" as well. Perhaps they will be on a Disc 3 of my collection eventually.

I am trying to compile the definitive GNR collection to serve as an introduction for someone. Rate it out of ten for me and show me where I went wrong in terms of chosen tracks and running order. I suppose including Since I Don't Have You and Sympathy For The Devil is where I went wrong, but (1) I like both of them and (2) I felt the need to stick them on there to include a bit of a break from AFD and UYI...

~Disc 1
Welcome To The Jungle
You Could Be Mine
Nightrain
Live and Let Die
Sweet Child O' Mine
Out Ta Get Me
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Don't Cry
Patience
November Rain
Rocket Queen
Coma

~Disc 2
It's So Easy
Mr Brownstone
Civil War
Since I Don't Have You
My Michelle
Pretty Tied Up
Used To Love Her
You're Crazy (acoustic)
Estranged
Sympathy For The Devil
Yesterdays
Paradise City

I agree that the alternate version of Dont Cry should be on a live album, and we should also have the version of 14 Years sung by Duff or Axl, that one time they did it when Izzy had just left (think this was around Jan 92)

Some of you guys aren't taking into consideration about space. Yeah the lists are great and all, but 15 tracks on a disc? No way it wouldn't fit.

It's all for fun though whatever.

To be realistic anything beyond a 2 disc set would be silly.

Gn'R only have around 60 songs out there. That's 60 original songs roughly.

So doing a 3 disc set doesn't make any realistic sense to me.

I'll do mine later on. It would be 1 disc. Since we're talking "greatest hits"

A best of I could do 2 disc 12 tracks each.

There is a a difference between a 'Greatest Hits' and a 'Best Of' compilation. I think that the track list wasn't that bad for a Greatest Hits anyway. A nice collection with their biggest hit singles.

Yep just what I said.

I think they nailed it. You get the only track not on a album that broke up the band, or had a lot to do with it in Sympathy, then you get all the main hit songs via the charts. It is perfect really.

Best of would look a lot different.
