Title: Re-recorded AFD?
Post by: -Jack- on September 05, 2005, 12:04:29 AM
Hey guys. I was just wondering.. does anyone know if the re-recorded Appetite will be released? Is it just a re-recording thats supposed to sound like the original? Or did they fundamentally change the sound?

I hear they replaced two of the songs... but I dont know with what.. or what they took out.

Sorry if im taking up board space for something stupid. But I gotta know  :peace:.

Why should they unless they were paid royalties on it?  And how do you know what songs were taken and what they were replaced by?  You ARE Axl Rose, aren't you?

Man some people on this board are so defensive! "You ARE Axl Rose, aren't you?" Gimme a break.  Im pretty sure that he got it from a freaking source. I've read it be4.. I just didn't remember the tracks and if it was ever to see the light of day.

In fact you have inspired me to go find the link....

and people.. I know AFD was amazing, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I think it would be pretty damn cool to hear it in a fresh new way. The least Axl could do is put the songs online for free (thus getting rid of the slash and duff royality problem)... like that would ever happen tho. heh.

O and I just found the interview...

Loder: Is it fair to say that we may never be hearing this stuff ever again? This old material?

Rose: No, no, that's not true at all. In fact, actually, I have re-recorded "Appetite" and --

Loder: You re-recorded "Appetite For Destruction?"

Rose: Yes, I have.

Loder: The whole album?

Rose: Yes.

Loder: Whoa.

Rose: Well, with the exception of two songs, because we replaced those with "You Could Be Mine," and "Patience," and why do that? Well, we had to rehearse them anyway to be able to perform them live again, and there were a lot of recording techniques and certain subtle styles and drum fills and things like that that are kind of '80s signatures that subtly could use a little sprucing up... a little less reverb and a little less double bass and things like that.

Loder: Who are the musicians who have re-recorded "Appetite?"

Rose: Josh Freese on drums, Tommy Stinson on bass, Paul Tobias on guitar -- you guys know him as Paul Huge, that's how it's been written everywhere. It's Paul Tobias on guitar, and Robin Finck was on lead guitar, but that... that will stay on some of it. Robin's guitar will stay on some, but not all. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, exactly, when I would be putting that out. But you know, it has a lot of energy. Learning the old Guns songs and getting them up, you know, putting them on tape, really forced everybody to get them up to the quality that they needed to be at. Once the energy was figured out by the new guys, how much energy was needed to get the songs right, then it really helped in the writing and recording process of the new record.

Axl's such an ass. What is he implying, that the AFD recorded with the old guns was below quality?

No, he said it was 80's, and infact that would be a great idea to bring up the old songs to date. I suppose your house still looks 70's. lol

And i suppose if u had a vintage '54 Ferrari Mondial, you'd strip it down and make it modern? lol.

So you are saying that the Stones should re-record Exile on Mainstreet, Frampton should re-record Frampton comes Alive, Sting should re-record Synchroncity, Springsteen should re-reccord Nebraska, hell even Prince should re-record Purple Rain. They're all old, right?

He said that when they were recording the Illusions.  He didn't want GN'R's success to be based on one album so they were basically trying to out-do AFD.  I believe they accomplished just that.  When GN'R toured behind the UYI's they built into a wider era of music and melody - not just hard rock which further cemented their place in music history.  Had the UYI's flopped - GN'R would probably be known as that "band with one good album back in the 80's" instead of the legendary powerhouse they are credited as today.

As far as re-recording AFD - Axl never said they had any intentions of releasing it.  Axl felt that learning the old Guns songs was essential for the new band to get them up to speed and to the caliber of the old band.  So I wouldn't necessarily say that Axl is still clutching onto the success of AFD.

maybe the Re-Recorded SCOM is the one on the Big Daddy soundtrack (The End Bit)

I like what I like and I'm fine with that, as for the Ferrari and those other bands I could care less what they do, they don't even measure up to Axl and his musical mind.

Indeed the first part of the song is played by the old band.. then it changes in the re-recorded version by new band

Axl or maybe even Sanctuary could at least release the AFD songs on the internet for the fans. Oh yeah. Axl hates the internet...even though he probably uses the internet everyday. But the nu band has no identity, and releasing them might help. Axl may even be able to market a couple? :D

Dude, he was saying that the old band needed to learn the parts and be able to play them at quality.  It's easy to look at some tab and play the songs resonably well, but the performance required to lay it down in a recording is much harder to achieve (if you want it to sound good).  Try not interpreting everything Axl says as a bash on the band.  And btw, AFD was recorded below quality.  Compare the sound to that of most albums out these days, it's fairly low-fi (in terms of technology quality, not performance quality).

Axl said he hated singing the song live.

And since they re-recorded AFD in order for the new members to learn songs for live performances, there was no point in including it.

Its really sad that you dont know your gnr history, it always show how little you know about this band. Axl said what songs wre taken out and what songs were replaced. Also even if he did not, its common sense since they never played anything goes or you're crazy on tour but did patience and YCBM. Your failed attempt at being witty once again makes? you look like an ass.

Loder: You re-recorded "Appetite For Destruction?"

All i'm saying is AFD shouldn't be touched. I rather have the original  than some 'spruced up' version.
P.S: Dave, that coma version is ultra-cool. Thx!

Ahhh.... I compleatly understand now...

Haha - a bit slow.. its late.

Nah - thats stupid.  New gnr is called NEW gnr for a REASON.....  Axl is just trying to steal some of his prime back from the 80s and early 90s.... it isnt gonna happen.

But thats just me!
