Title: If Use Your Illusion was one album (your tracklist)
Post by: da_illest_in_402 on January 29, 2003, 12:48:20 AM
Don't get me wrong, as a fan I loved 2 albums cause i would have more material to listen to, but if they wanted to make a MONSTER album, they should have made some cuts and made it just one album. Think about it. There would be no fillers just all great songs

ya i agree that would have been a kick ass album start to finish, no skipping some songs, but it would have been choppy, a ballad here, a fast song there.

as for appetite, its just right start to finish, thats why it can't be topped as an album

I don't think that UYI has too many fillers. And when I put all the songs on both UYI together... it's not possible on one CD. And for topping Appetite.... I think Appetite will never get topped coz it is the first thing that comes to people's minds when they think of GN'R. It's impossible to repeat that. It was THE album that made GN'R big and yeah... you can do whatever the fuck you want, you won't top it. [peace]

IMO, filler material on UYIs includes:

Get in the Ring
My World
Back off Bitch
Right Next Door to Hell
You Ain't the First
Bad Apples
Shotgun Blues

If they had removd these tracks and cut out one version of Don't Cry, Dead Horse, So Fine, Double Talkin' Jive, Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Civil War, then what would have been left would have been as good as AFD IMO.

would it be possible to have an album be that long though?

tracks would be

1.  Breakdown (7 min)
2.  Garden (5 min)
3.  Don't Damn Me (5 minutes)
4.  Yesterdays (3 min)
5.  Estranged (9 min)
6.  Pretty Tied up (5 min)
7.  14 years (4 min)
8.  Dust N' Bones (5 min)
9.  Locomotive (8 min)
10. Bad Obsession (5 min)
11. November Rain (8 min)
12. You Could Be Mine (6 min)
13. The Garden of Eden (3 min)
14. Don't Cry (5 min)
15. Coma (10 min)

...so that's an 88 minute long cd?  ...that's a pretty damn long cd

i think the way Gn'r handled the Illusions was the best way to do it, especially when you consider that axl hasn't released anything new since then, imagine if they only released one album and that was it...

and we never heard all the tracks left off those albums, i think that would kinda suck

that is a very VERY good point. if that happened, it would be terrible and such an awful shame. it could have happened and im glad it didnt. personally i dont see any fillers on the illusions, although i hate 'my world' but as someone previously mentioned, it's hardly long enough to bother with at all.

i think it was the best way do the albums... i think if they had a little more work, like more time to work on them. they coulda been way better. cuz  i heard that they were released way before the band was ready.

you aint the first isnt really suppose to be a good song... its a drinkin song.

and the two albums were made into one another and released called use your illusion with songs from the two albums. (i saw it at K-mart and im not too sure when it was released)

Even if 'you aint the first' wasnt ment to be a good song i think it fuckin rocks!!

I've seen that "best of" Use Your Illusion too but never really been that intrested in getting it.

Title: Re: If Use Your Illusion was one album (your tracklist)

I think some of the material should've been held onto for future release, rather than trying to release it all at once.

The filler on the UYI albums IMO:

My World
Get in the Ring
Back Off Bitch
Shotgun Blues
Garden Of Eden
You Ain't the First

and the two albums were made into one another and released called use your illusion with songs from the two albums. (i saw it at K-mart and im not too sure when it was released)
That wasn't a "Best of" compilation.  That was the Wal-Mart and K-Mart edited version of the two albums.  Notice how all the songs on that CD are the UYI songs without curse words.  Don't buy that album.  If you do, you are supporting the two Marts' censorship policies.

 Hey,
I don't think any of the material was filler on these albums. From time to time I am always jamming one of them except "My World." I don't even acknowledge that as a song, I put it on to laugh sometime.

Ok, if you FORCED me to take out songs, I don't know what I could part with. Let's see...

nope I cant pick any. Maybe you aint the first, my world, get in the ring... but with the exception of my world I still get into all those songs. I really love everything Guns did on UYIs, and it alternates. Sometimes I wanna hear Dead Horse or Don't Damn Me. Then I wanna hear locomotive and pretty tied up, you know. There's so much great stuff. How can you call this filler?! [beer] [hihi] [peace]

I don't think UYI would have been better than AFD if, you tryed to make it on one CD. Thank God they did put out two albums.  [yes] That was so cool how Guns N' Roses put out two cd's. If they just put out one cd that would have changed their history so much. I don't think the UYI World Tour would have been that long.  :-\

This is a good topic. I've been trying for somewhile to work out a way for a best songs on UYI on one disc. For me UYI is more important than AFD and I think, while not having the cultural impact, probably contains better music, easily. UYI songs are not ... ah... filler, but they could have been put elsewhere, in a box set. I think the centerpiece has to be Estranged, the opening song You Could Be Mine, and the final track Coma. November Rain and some other great tracks could have been put out as an EP or something. This isn't the order I'd go w/ but these are the songs I'd pick....
1. You Could Be Mine
2. Don't Damn Me
3. Dead Horse
4. Don't Cry (pick one)
5. Estranged
6. Coma
7. Locomotive
8. Breakdown
9. Pretty Tied Up
10. Dust N' Bones
11. Civil War
12. Yesterdays
13. The Garden

There's some mixed tempo stuff, some strange stuff, long stuff, loud stuff, ballads, deep lyrics, 'fuck off lyrics'. But I like how it worked out, no matter what.

1. Right Next Door To Hell
2. Dust N' Bones
3. You Could Be Mine
4. Don't Cry (Original)
5. Breakdown
6. Locomotive
7. 14 Years
8. November Rain
9. Civil War
10. So Fine
11. Yesterdays
12. Estranged
13. Get In The Ring
14. Don't Damn Me
15. Dead Horse
16. Coma

KOHD and LALD as a double a-side/non album-single, Pretty Tied Up, Bad Obesssion, Double Talkin' Jive, The Garden and You Ain't The First as b-sides.

Title: Re: If Use Your Illusion was one album (your tracklist)
Post by: Michelle on January 31, 2003, 06:36:21 PM
I would never wanna miss Double Talkin' Jive... I'll try but I think I won't be able to manage to make one UYI cd but let's see:

(no particular order)

Right Next Door To Hell
Dust N'Bones
Perfect Crime
Live And Let Die
Don't Cry
Double Talkin' Jive
November Rain
Garden Of Eden
Dead Horse
Coma
Civil War
Yesterdays
Breakdown
Estranged
Locomotive
Pretty Tied Up
You Could Be Mine

Well, as you can see it doesn't really work for me and the songs that I now left out - I still wouldn't wanna miss them. And honestly I don't think that it would have made the Illusions better than Appetite if they were on one CD.

I will go on record as saying i believe the double UYI albums ARE the greatest albums ever released

I once believed the albums were blighted by filler.....then i really listened. Every track on there (except My world) is pure genius.

The album is best as is.

Maybe it could have lost a few songs ("Bad Apples," "My World," "Bad Obsession") but theres always going to be someone whose favorite song would have been cut.  I guarantee everybodys 10 song track-listings would be wildly different.

As a complete album, it might not work as good as it could have.  But as a collection of songs, its as good as possible and thats even better as far as Im concerned.

Well, we pretty much got the a sides, b sides and some c sides! They almost cleared the shelves. However, Get in the Ring is a complete embarrassment to the band. They did not have to stoop that low.

I agree.  I like the albums the way they are.  Everybody likes different songs off them, I mean, personally, I love Bad Apples, but a lot of people see it as filler.  I'd hate to miss out on most of the songs on UYI.

Besides, Led Zep songs sound a lot more similar to each other than those songs listed... I just don't think it'd flow that well, and it would become too tiring to listen to about half way through.

No Way!  I fuckin love Bad Apples!  hehe.... the albums are perfect as they are... how can anyone say an album should have less songs? I dont get that... I love all the songs... but if you dont like the songs... skip them, and be pleased you got value for money considering you got all those songs... !!!

You see, this is why abridging the album would have been a bad idea...

I like "Get In The Ring"...Warranted or not, Axls venom on that song is certainly entertaining, and the track itself is very catcy.  I could have done without some of the vocal touches and production effects (I would have liked to hear a more raw version), but a good song either way.

We come back to the same problem, everyone's track preferences would be different.

The reason the band included just about every song they had written is they weren't sure how long they would be together.  The Illusion sessions themselves were a hurdle to get over.

Hence, GN'R fans got two records - somewhat similar to the Beatles' White Album.

Maybe it could have lost a few songs ("Bad Apples," ....

Noooo! I love bad apples! I think that its one of the best bluesy songs on those albums. I love the verses too.

This is another example, though, of how everyone has different tastes. So many people love the song Double Talkin jive, but its really a song i dont like at all. The only thign i like about it is the spanish guitar solo, and how they extend it all on the UYI tour. It's really good then, but the actual song I think sucks.

I almost agree with you Dave, it could?ve been even more successful (but not the greates t album of all time, not better than AFD) if it was only one album plus a bonus CD (that could come with a special edition of UYI or sold separatly) including all the other tracks that stayed out of it... In fact, even that wouldn?t be necessary, if they'd put those songs in the singles... And I think that's Axl's intension to Chinese Democracy, at least from everything he said up to now (that thing that CD would have 16-18 tracks plus others in its singles, remember?)!

About the zepplin cover song, I think TSI could?ve also be a HUGE album if it was not only a punk cover (although I don?t hear anything of punk rock in "Since I Don?t Have You"). It could also include the cover songs of the illusions (that?s why I didn?t included them down here)... I'll post a new topic about this specific subject...

Use Your Illusion... Revisited:

01. Civil War
02. Right Next Door to Hell
03. You Could Be Mine
04. Double Talkin Jive
05. November Rain
06. Shotgun Blues
07. Yesterdays
08. Estranged
09. Don?t Damn Me
10. Don?t Cry
11. Coma

Don?t think it?s the same thing because both illusions have amazing great songs, and both illusions have "not that much great" songs.

In the case I?m exposing, the main CD would have the really great songs, and the other would be only the B-sides, which not everyone would be interested to buy... that's just utopia, man! Fact: the illusions are out there released the way they are and there?s no way to go back (unless uncle Axl re-record it with the new band and etc... but that?s a looong, long trip).

In IYU there's a lot of songs with amazing potential that could be realy better (Pefect Crime, Locomotive, Shotgun Blues, Breakdown (I love this one), Dust N' Bones...). So, this would be my tracklist:

01. You Could be Mine
02. Civil War
03. Pretty Tied Up
04. Don't Cry
05. The Garden
06. Dead Horse
07. Don't Damm Me
08. November Rain
09. Estranged
10. Perfect Crime ('cause if they've worked in less songs at that time, this song would be a TOP 5 all time in GN'R songs)

The covers would be on TSI.

1. Civil War
2. You Could Be Mine
3. Yesterdays
4. Don't Cry
6. November Rain
7. Knockin on Heaven's Door(my fav gnr song ever, even tho its a cover they made that song kick some major ass)
8. Estranged
9. Back off Bitch
10. Coma

yes way better, but they r the way they r and we can't change it. Here's my list

1) Civil War
2) Dust N' Bones
3) Live and Let Die
4) 14 Years
5) Knockin on Heaven's Door
6) Bad Obsession
7) Shotgun Blues
8) Pretty Tied Up
9) November Rain
10) Perfect Crime
11) Don't Cry
12) Estranged
13) The Garden
14) Locomotive
15) Coma
i know it was that if the album was shorter with the best songs, but seeing as their are 30 in the 2 albums i took my fav 15 from both.

The main reason I'm such a huge GN'R fan is because I love all their songs. They were the first band I got into where I loved EVERY SINGLE SONG they released.
Unlike some other bands that have one or two good songs and the rest fillers.

My only complaint about UYI might be is that they are a little overproduced, but otherwise I hold them in regard as THE best rock albums ever recorded.
You can't go past Slash's brilliant guitar work, Axl's amazingly emotional vocals and lyrics, Matt's great drum work, Izzy's great songwriting and Duff's cool bass lines, that all add up to two kick ass albums!

Breakdown is also fairely disposable. (the band obviously felt so as those 2 where rarely performed live yet dtj was performed every night)

If you replaced them 2 with  DTJ and 14 Years and maybe one more song i would agree with you.
As long as the remainder are released as b-sides

I think that if they put hust the best songs, they could have time to work in the other songs (I agree that all UYI songs are great) and make them, a classic too. In IYU there's a lot of songs with amazing potential that could be realy better (Pefect Crime, Locomotive, Shotgun Blues, Breakdown (I love this one), Dust N' Bones...). So, this would be my tracklist:

01. You Could be Mine
02. Civil War
03. Pretty Tied Up
04. Don't Cry
05. The Garden
06. Dead Horse
07. Don't Damm Me
08. November Rain
09. Estranged
10. Perfect Crime ('cause if they've worked in less songs at that time, this song would be a TOP 5 all time in GN'R songs)

The covers would be on TSI.

Perfect Crime is perfect. Don't mess with it.

Hey guy, I love Perfect Crime too, but I think this song got a potential to be a single if they worked a little bit more on it.

i agree totally metallex

only two bands in the history of music that i can honestly say i love every single song on every single album and they are guns  n roses and bon jovi

no other group can i say that i love very single song like its a number 1 smash

I'm the same, but the two bands I love every single song of are GN'R & Metallica.
I was Bon Jovi fan up until Keep The Faith, which I still think is BJ's best album.

dtj better than coma or breakdown?

are u insane?

it was played on the tour for two reasons,

1. so axl could do his famous rants

2. cause it had a nice 4 or 5 minute break for axl to go backstage, rest, get something to drink, relax and change clothes

i agree with booker!

think about it, gnr made 3 full length cds, 3 of the greatest cds of all time

see now why i dont doubt axl and C.D.?

Don't forget LIES, i adore that album, every track on there is fanastic.

If axl played breakdown he would be sititing down at a piano, plus during dtj he runs like a maniac

I don't understand why people automatically consider Breakdown, Coma, Estranged genius just because there long, complex, piano laden and have emotional lyrics.

It's actually a lot harder to write quality RaR. Simple stuff because it's already been done.

Coma is my 2nd worst gnr song after my world, it is too long for a start and too heavy metal (which I detest)

We're all about opinions here, but please don't spout nonsense...Coma...''heavy metal'', Slayer are heavy metal, if you think Coma sounds like Slayer....well :nervous:

Coma is not my favourite song but it is a very good song with some amazing lyrics, it takes some time to get used to for sure, you just need a little patience with it....

what the hell are gnr then? hall and oates?

gnr are punk pop metal rock all kinds of groovy little titles

Coma is in my top 10 gnr songs ever

coma is a song that if u have ever went thru tramatic, near death walkin thru hell and back type shit u will love it greater than any song

same with oh my god etc

some gnr songs are harder to get cause u have to be able to relate and most people fortunatley havent had to deal with those kinds of evil horrible issues

i have dealt with those issues so maybe thats why i and a lot of others on here relate so personally to it

it did when uyi 1 survivor!

Guns N' Roses are a Hard Rock band, or a RaR band. With other influences like punk and elton john

I may be getting to technical but there style is bluesbased, most metal is derived from modes

Izzy and Slash where into the stones and aerosmith, there not metal. Axls into acdc, thin lizzy, elton john and queen.Duff-punk.

yes but axl was apart of that and i dont think axl will let it suck just like i dont think VR's cd will suck
any full on effort by any member of gnr will kick ass cause they havent disappointed yet

well except solo discs but im sure those werent meant to be blockbusters just solo shit

axl has a great vision

estranged, coma, i mean these arent ordinary songs

a man that has the vision to write epics to me is more than a great musician

C.D. will be 5 times greater than any gnr cd

any bets?

ill bet 5 on it

i have confidence in axl

Man, what I mean is, even Bohemian Rhapsody got potencial to be better, all songs can be better. And, in my opinion, Perfect Crime could be really better even being an amazing song. For example, look at the new songs. They were great songs, but, working more on this songs they became better then in the past.

Ps.: Don't forget it's just my opinion, I don't "own the truth".

I'm glad to have found a GNR message board where I can throw this out.  I think one of the most disappointing events in the last 20 years of Rock and Roll is that Use Your Illusion could have easily been one of the greatest albums in history.  As it is, the material that would have been used to make such an album gets bogged down in an indecipherable mess of adolescent whining or self-indulgent (and sometimes borderline delusional) fits of rage.  The "why" here (i.e. Axl Rose's ego) can be discussed and debated endlessly, but I've always preferred to focus on the tangible content.

If you were to construct a one-disc album of the 10 or 11 best songs from the two albums (assuming the left-overs could be released on a follow up b-sides disc, or whatever) which would you choose and in what order?  I like:

1) You Could Be Mine
2) Don't Cry
3) Civil War
4) Don't Damn Me
5) November Rain
6) Garden of Eden
7) Locomotive
8) You Ain't the First
9) Estranged
10) Yesterdays
11) Breakdown

Obviously no two lists will be the same but I'd like to know what others think.  I would challenge anyone, however, to construct a playlist of the above and tell me that it isn't one of the best albums ever.  What say you?

Also, sorry if I'm "beating a dead horse" here but I didn't see a similar thread in my search of the boards.

5. Double Talkin Jive
6. November Rain

9.   Civil War

The Illusions are perfect as a double album.  The only song I dont much care for is My World.  The rest is brilliant material.

I'll try to go with 10 or 11 for a single disc, but it'll probably be more like 15.

1)Right Next Door to Hell
2)Civil War
3)Perfect Crime
4)Breakdown
5)Back off Bitch
6)Pretty Tied Up (The Perils of Rock & Roll Decadence)
7)Double Talkin' Jive
8.)Locomotive
9)Dead Horse
10)So Fine
11)Estranged
12)You Could Be Mine
13)Dont Cry (alt)
14)Coma

Its a bitch to have to leave November Rain off that list...but I cant take any of the other songs off if it either!!

Try the dead horse section.....

Listen to all the songs u claim are rubbish and u will realise they ain't.

Some songs take time. I been listening to UYI 1 and 2 for 10 years and only this year has Coma 'clicked' with me.

Put the volume on max, listen to the lyrics and try and understand the point being made. U will be amazed how songs grew on you. I never liked Locomotive, but now i can't stop listening to it.

also, this goes for all the critics of the UYI albums. Look at everyone's lists of songs. Each person likes different songs, how many great songs would be lost if the album was just 12 songs?

My fav song of all time is 14 years. That would have gone bye bye

I don't know how people can criticise a band for giving them too much....... ::)

That is so true. I've been listening to illusions for 10 years too and in the last 2 or 3 I could have made a compilation CD of songs I like from them easily, except for one thing - It doesn't work.

Why doesn't it work I hear you ask? Because my ideal tracklisting would change every week, if not every day. Every song is good, and they all demand listening to. There's no song I could say "I'll never be in the mood to hear that again".

Use Your Illusion I and II are brilliant as they are, and should be considered classics.

There is no way you can leave out November Rain. I realize this is all opinionated,  but it is just wrong to leave out the song that practically defined the GnR of the 90's. Without this song, I strongly doubt they would be even half as famous.

Hey man, there is some thruth in your opinion, according to me. But I think that the real GUNS N' ROSES attitude was damaged with NOVEMBER RAIN. There is no doubt, that this is a great ballad but it's not for GUNS N' ROSES.
It is true that they wouldn't be so famous, but I don't like GUNS because they were or are famous. I don't care about the famous. I love their songs, their lyrics, their attitude, their behaviour and everything else.

I'm sorry if my English is not perfect, but I'm still learning it.

Don't get me wrong, as a fan I loved 2 albums cause i would have more material to listen to, but if they wanted to make a MONSTER album, they should have made some cuts and made it just one album. Think about it. There would be no fillers just all great songs

Fillers ?? I don't find any...

You gotta be kiddin?!!You are talkin about one of the best rock album ever, and you?re sayin it has fillers!!!NO WAY

For one album, I would pick the following

1.  Right Next Door To Hell
2.  Dust N Bones
3.  Perfect Crime
4.  November Rain
5.  The Garden
6.  Garden Of Eden
7.  Don't Damn Me
8.  Bad Apples
9.  Civil War
10.  14 Years
11.  Yesterdays
12.  Pretty Tied Up
13.  Locomotive
14.  Estranged
15.  You Could Be Mine
16.  Don't Cry Alt. Lyrics

I don't even think that would fit on one CD, and there are songs I would still want to listen to.  The best idea would have been to cut out My World and Get In The Ring, and transfer a few songs from Illusion 1 onto disc 2.  The only songs I ever skip past on either disc are GITR and My World.  It's impossible to make it into one disc without leaving out some great songs.

I have always liked Use Your Illusions, but always felt somewhat let down by them.  However, today I made a CD with my favorites and in the sequence I thought was cool.  Listening to it gave me a new appreciation for it and made me think of what could have been.  When you put the best songs on one CD, I think it could possibly be better than Appetite.  I think if they would have just released one CD of the best tracks there wouldn't have been such a media backlash and they may have weathered the grunge onslaught a little better.  When you get rid of all the filler, it really is an amazing albulm.  I am sure I am little late realizing this and everybody has probably already done this, but I thought I would share it anyways.  Here is my tracklist:

Perfect Crime
You Could Be Mine
Don't Cry (Alt. Lyrics)
Locomotive
Dead Horse
November Rain
Pretty Tied Up
Don't Damn Me
Civil War
Estranged
Double Talkin' Jive
Coma

There's nothing wrong with the UYI albums as they are, I wouldn't take off any tracks.

You can't really say that they did badly either due to the amount of songs, they debuted at Number 1 & 2 on the charts when they were released and continued to sell pretty damn well too.

Although I agree that if there was to be a single CD Illusions, November Rain SHOULD be on it, but if it wasn't, I think it would be fair to say that Estranged would fill in for it. Estranged IMO is one of the best GnR songs.
What I'd like to know is what would have happened had it been on AFD... The other songs, and then Estranged. Would the reviews have been any different?
But..... here's my list. You evil, evil people!
1. You Ain't the First
2. Don't Cry (alt lyrics)
3. Civil War
4. The Garden
5. 14 Years
6. Dead Horse
7. Back Off Bitch
8. Get In The Ring
9. November Rain
10. Don't Damn Me
11. Yesterdays
12. Pretty Tied Up (The Perils of Rock n' Roll Decadence)
13. KOHD
14. Don't Cry (original)
15. Coma
16. Estranged

I put Estranged at the end so that when it ends, you feel nice and satisfied, instead of having to rush to switch back so you don't have to listen to My World... having that after Don't Cry really gives you a shock! DC just finishes, and you feel nice and relaxed, and then My World comes on and it makes you go "AAAH!" So having Estranged at the end makes for a nice ending.

11. get in the ring

I like the Illusions as they are, but okay, if there was only one single-disc Use Your Illusion album, this would be my tracklist:

1. Civil War
2. You Could Be Mine
3. Bad Obsession
4. Don't Cry [Original]
5. Yesterdays
6. Back Off Bitch
7. Breakdown
8. Don't Damn Me
9. The Garden
10. Estranged
11. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
12. Coma

I had to cut out November Rain, even though it was the song that got me into Guns N' Roses.  And that's because Estranged is even better, and there can only be one 10 minute piano epic with introspective lyrics and amazing Slash solos on this single-disc Use Your Illusion.  The thing I find is that there are so many long epic songs on the UYI albums that they practically HAVE to be on two discs to conserve all those long songs.  If you tried to fit them all on one record, there would be so many epic songs that you couldn't have good pacing, and you would miss out on a lot of rockers.

I think we're all glad GN'R put out two discs rather than one, for the simple reason that we got more great music!  And with a band as relatively short-lived as Guns N' Roses, I think that's another blessing for us to count.

You know how there are those albums being released these days, the 'deluxe edition' or 'legend series' albums? For the uneducated basically it's the album, with a 2nd and/or 3rd cd of extra material with a dvd of the videos and doco's studio footage etc with everything remasterd, all in new packaging with a new booklet. I think it would be a great idea to have both UYI albums and and an extra cd of live songs + b-sides from that time. Along with a disc of all the videos and a doco or something. Who else agrees?

I don't think any of the songs shouldn't have been Axed by Axl.  All were good/unique/artsy/rockin in thier own way.  Overall, each album alone are VERY long (vs. other rock n roll albums, which may only run 35 min!)
I know many of you agree that "my world" isn't all that good (I myself rarely listen to that track)...but when I do, it puts a twisted smile on my face---it's sorta funny.
APF and UYIs are VERY different albums in every sense of the word--even when dealing with this topic of excessiveness vs. raw power.  But it still amazes me that GNR had the creativity to due such an act and pull it off VERY sucessfully!

ya i agree that would have been a kick ass album start to finish, no skipping some songs, but it would have been choppy, a ballad here, a fast song there.

as for appetite, its just right start to finish, thats why it can't be topped as an album

i couldn't of said it better myself

Both albums are amazin from start to finish, why not a 2-disc album with all the same songs?! Even my world, which is one of the best songs in history!

IMO, filler material on UYIs includes:

Get in the Ring
My World
Back off Bitch
Right Next Door to Hell
You Ain't the First
Bad Apples
Shotgun Blues

If they had removd these tracks and cut out one version of Don't Cry, Dead Horse, So Fine, Double Talkin' Jive, Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Civil War, then what would have been left would have been as good as AFD IMO.

/Pretty

Get in the Ring a filler??? This is on my personal best of GNR CD.

My Illusion album would be (although one album is not enough):

Civil War
Live and Let Die
Yesterdays
You Could Be Mine
Coma
Don't Cry (Original)
Bad Obsession
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Double Talkin' Jive
Get In The Ring
November Rain
Dead Horse
The Garden
Estranged
14 Years (Bonus Track)

To me the fillers are:

Breakdown
My World
Don't Cry (Alt Lyrics)
You Ain't the First

Even my world, which is one of the best songs in history!

There's so many songs on the Illusion twins that I simply skip on my mp3 player every time - so my "perfect" Use Your Illusion album would be as following:

1. You Could Be Mine
2. Don't Damn Me
3. Back Off Bitch
4. Coma
5. Dust N' Bones
6. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
7. Civil War
8. 14 Years
9. November Rain
10. Breakdown
11. Pretty Tied Up
12. Locomotive (Complicity)
13. Estranged
14. Don't Cry (Alt. Lyrics)

The fact that every single "best of" UYI list is different shows that it was probably for the best that GN'R released 2 albums. If the one UYI album had looked anything like the compilation released a few years ago, it would probably be collecting dust on my shelf now, rather than me still listening to both albums more than a year after i got them (yes I'm one of the greatest hits generation). But just for the hell of it:

1. Locomotive
2. Don't Cry
3. Dust N Bones
4. Don't Damn me
5. 14 Years
6. Double Talkin Jive
7. Civil War
8. You Could Be Mine
9. Estranged
10. Live & Let Die
11. November Rain

I think it probably would've been better to realease 2 separate albums under 2 separate titles.

That way, we'd still get to have ALL the songs, and not want to make cuts on the shite ones.  :P

15. Get In The Ring
16. Pretty Tied Up
17. Locomotive
18. Estranged
19. You Could Be Mine
20. My World

Yeah that's probably too long, maybe you could take out 14 years, you aint the first or bad obsession maybe

I would really consider finishing up Crash Diet and putting that one there. I listened to the Demo version that Jarmo has in the downloads section of this site and its one of the coolest fucking GnR songs Ive ever heard.

Why didnt they put that there but they put garbage like Shotgun Blues and Bad Apples on there?  :peace:

The good thing is that there are enough fillers that many of us like and others that don't like. Each one has his own preference in fillers too.

e.g.
I love back off bitch, think about you (AFD), dust n' bones, right next door to hell.
Others would like, don't damn me, bad apples,  you ain't the first, or bad obssesion

The diversity of the two albums makes them unique.  : ok:
Thank god we have the fillers  :D

I would keep it a double, take out "My World" "Get in the Ring" "So Fine" the alternate "Don't cry" "Shotgun Blues" and just re-record the live songs from Lies in the studio so they sounded better. Maybe move "The Garden" to UYI 2 as well to balance the lengths.

My Perfect UYI album - If this were the tracklist, I'd easily rank this as the best GNR record so far.

1) Civil War
2) 14 Years
3) Yesterdays
4) Knockin' on Heaven's Door
5) Breakdown
6) Dust N' Bones
7) The Garden
8) You Could Be Mine
9) Crash Diet
10) Estranged
11) My World

I think that My World is a more important track than most people realize. I'm not saying it's very good, but there's no way I'd take it off the UYI's.

i doubt u could try to combine all tracks of the use ur ill. set into one cd. that would-be cd would've seemed crammed. hasn't anyone ever noticed that use ur ill 1's essence is slightly different that use ur ill 2? keeping them separate is vital. the impact those albums had would not have been the same if they had done things differently.

Don't get me wrong, as a fan I loved 2 albums cause i would have more material to listen to, but if they wanted to make a MONSTER album, they should have made some cuts and made it just one album. Think about it. There would be no fillers just all great songs

The only song I would do away with from the UYI albums is "My World." However, "My World" was not a filler... I'm not sure what it was. But I agree with some of the other posters here that there were NO fillers on the UYI albums. Although, to answer the question... this would be my list for a UYI album... based on the songs I listen to the most.

Use Your Illusion:
1. Breakdown
2. Coma
3. Bad Apples
4. Dead Horse
5. 14 Years
6. Don't Cry
7. Don't Cry (Alt.)
8. Back Off Bitch
9. November Rain
11. Don't Damn Me
12. Civil War
13. Knockin' On Heavens Door
14. You Could Be Mine
15. Estranged
16. Locomotive

I'd make it 10 tracks. No more, no less. UYI II's first 4 songs are flawlessly sequenced, so I'll keep that order on version of UYI.

1) Civil War
2) 14 Years
3) Yesterdays
4) Knockin' On Heaven's Door
5) Breakdown
6) November Rain
7) Crash Diet (Didn't end up either UYI, but it damn well should've)
8) Estranged
9) You Could Be Mine
10) Coma

I don't know whether anyones said this already(i didn't have time to read all the posts), but i know there is a album which consists of certain tracks from each album, i can't remember what it's called. If you go on amazon.com and type in guns n roses, then it will come up-it's an import though.

I think the UYI albums could actually have been successful as separate releases. There would still be 2 discs worth of material I would have just separated them a little differently. It wouldn't have been too bad to name the first one 'AFD II' or even 'Right Next Door To Hell' and just keep the second one as 'UYI'. This is how I would have separated them. Keep in mind not all tracks will make it to any one of these 2 albums. Track listing isn't in any particular order:

AFD II or Right Next Door To Hell:

1. Right Next Door To Hell
2. Dust N' Bones
3. Live And Let Die
4. Perfect Crime
5. Back Off Bitch
6. Double Talkin' Jive
7. The Garden
8. Garden Of Eden
9. Don't Damn Me
10. Dead Horse
11. Coma
12. Get In the Ring
13. You Could Be Mine

Use Your Illusion:

1. Don't Cry
2. Bad Obsession
3. November Rain
4. Bad Apples
5. Civil War
6. 14 years
7. Yesterdays
8. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
9. Shotgun Blues
10. Breakdown
11. Pretty Tied Up
12. Locomotive
13. Estranged

The album below would join AFD as one of the top albums of all-time.  And that's right...no Nov Rain, no KOHD and no Civil War.  "You dig...what I'm sayin'?...."

1. Perfect Crime
2. Pretty Tied Up
3. Don't Cry (original)
4. You Could Be Mine
5. Garden of Eden
6. Breakdown
7. Double-Talkin' Jive
8. Locomotive
9. Estranged
10. Coma

7 Estranged
8 Yesterdays
9 November Rain

11 So Fine
12 Get In The Ring

15 Dead Horse
16 Coma

I would have made Coma a one hour song.

That would have actually been cool if they had released like an EP that was just a 1/2 hour version of that song.  I think Jethro Tull did that at one time with "Thick as a brick".. I am not exactly sure ho wlong it was but I think it was atleast 20 minutes..

Double Talkin Jive

Get In The Ring
Breakdown
Locomotive
Pretty Tied Up
My World

Title: Re: If Use Your Illusion was one album (your tracklist)

1. You Could Be Mine
2. Dust N' Bones
3. Don't Cry (original)
4. Pretty Tied Up----(one of the most underrated GNR tracks)
5. Bad Obsession
6. Civil War
7. Dead Horse-------(another very underrated track)
8. Perfect Crime----(even though there are better tracks not included here, I included this one because it's so short)
9. Knockin' on Heaven's Door
10. Estranged
11. November Rain
12. Don't Damn Me
13. Coma

I'm not sure how long a CD can be, but I think it's around 78 minutes, so I made sure to make a CD that'd fit the limit. That version of UYI would be 77:44.

I'm glad that GNR didn't just release one album, though, because we would've been denied some amazing songs.

Title: Re: If Use Your Illusion was one album (your tracklist)
Post by: UYIllusion on June 26, 2006, 01:41:39 AM
I wouldn't include KOHD because it was on the Days of Thunder soundtrack.  I also prefer to hear GNR originals as oppossed to cover songs.  This would be my UYI album that I would like if I had to cut down on the bloat:

Civil War
Dust N' Bones
November Rain
Don't Damn Me
Locomotive
Breakdown
Double Talkin' Jive
Estranged
Pretty Tied Up
Coma

I think these songs show the range of the band as well as the influence of their major songwriters.  Of course Axl is the main cog in the machine, but Izzy's songs bring a real bluesy feel that extend the reach of the band.  Of course, Slash's contributions are evident in all of these songs.  The Illusion albums are probably my favorite album of all time (I like it more than Appetite) but even I admit there is a fair amount of filler.  There are a lot of song that I really like that I didn't include in the above list.  However, there were some songs I could do with out including:  My World, Get in the Ring, Back of Bitch, Live and Let Die (was this really a necessary cover?), Bad Obsession, Bad Apples, and did they really need two Don't Crys?

7 november rain
8 the garden

10 locomotive
11 estranged
12 pretty tied up
13 don't cry (original)
14 coma

this would make a great album! covers would be played live and stay live classics, civil war was released on a soundtrack so we'd still hear it! and the epics we'd had to lose one, so i'd choose breakdown, altough i love the song more that NR, but NR is a classic...
maybe they could have shortened songs like locomotive so we'd hear dust and bones...

Sorry folks but no November Rain, I had to keep the running time somewhat realistic.?Also I love You Ain't the First but it seems so out of place on a? Gn'R album. This is the running order I'd put them in also.? It's in your face right off the bat and then chills out just a? bit in the middle and then picks it up at the end, climaxing with Coma. Perfect album right there.

I already made this CD awhile ago...played it so much I scratched it all to hell...

1.  Civil War
2.  You Could Be Mine
3.  Locomotive
4.  Dont Cry (o)
5.  November Rain
6.  Estranged
7.  Dead Horse
8.  Pretty Tied Up
9.  Knockin' On Heaven's Door
10.  14 Years
11.  Coma
12.  Right Next Door To Hell

As much as I love both CDs, had they released one mega-album...they would have repeated AFD's success.

I wouldn't touch a thing on UYI... there's just so much to them... so much diversity... so many hits.... a few misses... and that's what happens when you push the envelope...

Many are fond of saying that UYI is the sound of great band breaking up... I disagree... I think it's the sound of a great band GROWING UP... and I think UYI sets the stage nicely for songs like "T.W.A.T.", "Madagascar", "The Blues" and "CITR" to name a few. : ok:

Every song except:

Shotgun Blues
Get In The Ring
Don't Cry (Alt. Lyrics)
Breakdown
Don't Damn Me (I know lotsa people love this song...I don't...you're over it)
My World
So Fine
Double Talkin Jive (fun jam, not exactly a classic song to me though)
Back Off Bitch
Knockin' On Heaven's Door

...That's still probably more than 80 minutes worth, but I can't part with any of the other songs.

Don't get me wrong, as a fan I loved 2 albums cause i would have more material to listen to, but if they wanted to make a MONSTER album, they should have made some cuts and made it just one album. Think about it. There would be no fillers just all great songs

Fillers ?? I don't find any...
My world?!

I'd agree with that as filler and u aint the first. The rest is gold

Right, ive done my best... it would have to be on a bigger capacaty CD, Super Audio or somthing? I don't know.

The track listing has been thought of... with the first tracks resembling the more 'Appetite' sound, agression... then mellowing in the middle, to been emotionally driven and beautiful then a few kicks in the face at the end.

Id burn this as a disc if i could.

2. You Could Be Mine
3. Live And Let Die
4. Bad Obsession
5. Double Talkin' Jive

Uhh... All of the tracks from UYI2 were awesome (aside from My world) as were many songs on UYI1...  I dunno, I havn't listened to the UYI's latly but from what I can remember...

it would be UYI2 with "So Fine", "My World" and "yesterdays" replaced with november rain, Live and let Die, and Coma.  Added would be "Dust 'N Bones"... I'll work on this later...

I like every song on UYI. Some are better than others, but the variety and depth of the range of songs is what makes both albums so great. : ok:

Bad Apples is awesome for the solo alone.

Well hi this is my first post both UYI are exceptional albums ! to purge a few songs to make into a single album would obviously include  My World though Axl as stated this was both something Duff and Slash knew about at the time  and kinda liked but  didnt like the absence of Guitars and band input on it....apart from this track its quite  tough  songs like bad apples  you aint the first  spring to mind maybe shotgun blues and despite it being an awesome track.dont damn me   as to be fair other UYI tracks have had live versions played at some point  ..double talking jive to me seems outa place?

I think this topic shows the strength of the UYI albums in that no two lists on here are the same, its really interesting that what one person classes as a weaker song is anothers favourite, thus proving it was correct to release both albums at the same time.

O yeah and all those that don't like Bad Apples you should go back to it and have another listen, I always skipped it and then about six months ago I played it and WOW! What a fuckin song, it was like discovering a new GnR song, you should all try it, listen to the songs you usually skip!

Wow..!  Loving this thread!  I'm amazed though that some of the tracks I love are considered to be fillers... fair enough of course, but that probably proves why it was worth releasing both.  I love the balance of both albums - for example, You Ain't the First isn't a "classic" but it's a great song and comes at the right time after Perfect Crime.  Have to say, the only tracks I don't enjoy listening to are Right Next Door to Hell and My World.  Here's my favourite 15 though... in no particular order:

1 Dust n' Bones
2 Live and Let Die
3 Don't Cry
4 You Ain't the First
5 Bad Obsession
6 November Rain
7 Don't Damn Me
8 Bad Apples
9 Dead Horse
10 Civil War
11 14 Years
12 Get in the Ring
13 Breakdown
14 Pretty Tied Up
15 Estranged

Argh... can I have Yesterdays, Locomotive, and So Fine too please...?! Help!

I couldn't do this, too many good songs.

I never got people wanting it to be 1 album, it has too many great songs on, to be compacted down. Every song on both records is purely a hit, and no songs deserve to be left off, just for the sake of making it 1 disc, instead of 2.

"I brought me an Illusion and I put it on the wall,
I let it fill my head with dreams and I had to have them all."

Amazing.  ;D

Don't get me wrong, as a fan I loved 2 albums cause i would have more material to listen to, but if they wanted to make a MONSTER album, they should have made some cuts and made it just one album. Think about it. There would be no fillers just all great songs

I don't see any fillers...but in terms of one album

1. Civil War
2. Don't Cry (Original)
3. You Could Be Mine
4. Perfect Crime
5. Double Talkin Jive'
6. November Rain
7. Dead Horse
8. Right Next Door to Hell
9. Estranged
10. Coma

There are, of course, loads of other great tracks - Bad Obsession would be my next pick, followed closely by 'You Ain't the First'

Other songs, like Locomotive, Breakdown and So Fine are also perfect

If there is anything I would have ignored on these albums, it was perhaps Shotgun Blues (not the best track but a good B Side), Get In The Ring (because of the rant, otherwise a great song) and My World - the latter of which is pointless

Of the two my favourite is the first volume, replacing Live and Let Die (due to it's over playing in the years since) with Civil War

my solution would be all uyi 1 and release the next one 1 month after with a other name

Perfect Crime
Dust N Bones
Civil War
Garden of Eden
Don't Cry
Bad Obsession
Dead Horse
Get In The Ring
November Rain
Double Talkin' Jive

IF it were just 14 song album and I am trying to keep my heart out of it and only placing what I feel are the 14 best songs to make the most COMMERCIAL album:

1.Civil War as the opener
2.Dust N Bones
3.Live And Let Die
4.You Could Be Mine
5.Don't Cry
6. Pretty Tied Up
7. Locomotive
8.Estranged
9. Knockin on Heaven's Door
10. November Rain
11. Yesterdays
12. Breakdown
13.Dead Horse
14. Coma the ultimate Closer

those 14 IMO the best of the album. Leaving Don't Damn Me off very difficult but something had to go.

This topic has been dead since last July!  I think its time for a revisit.  10 song LP:

1) You Could Be Mine
2) Civil War
3) 14 Years
4) Locomotive
5) November Rain
6) Don't Cry (original)
7) Estranged
8) Dead Horse
9) Yesterdays
10) Coma

1. You Could Be Mine
2. 14 Years
3. Don't Cry (Alt Lyrics)
4. Don't Damn Me
5. Civil War
6. November Rain
7. Double Talkin Jive
8. Breakdown
9. Locomotive
10. Estranged
11. Dead Horse
12. Coma

These are just my personal favorites with no regard paid to what were singles, commercial appeal, etc. Probably a little heavy on ballads. I picked 12 because 14 probably wouldn't fit onto a CD with the song lengths (yes I realize no one buys CD's anymore).

This is my ultimate Use Your Illusion album and order for the tracklist.  I tried to incorporate all the dimensions of UYI both with the big ballads like November Rain along with the attitude like Back off Bitch and Get in the Ring.  I pretended it was 1991 and that this had to fit on one cd.

1. You Could Be Mine
2. Perfect Crime
3. 14 Years
4. Yesterdays
5. Locomotive
6. Back off Bitch
7.  Right Next Door to Hell
8. Civil War
9.  Don't Damn Me
10. Get in The Ring
11. Double Talkin Jive
12. Don't Cry
13. November Rain
14. Estranged

Have I posted on this before? I don't remember, and don't wanna look through every post, so here it is (possibly again :hihi: )

This comes to just under 80 minutes...

1. Civil War
2. You Could Be Mine
3. Pretty Tied Up
4. Don't Cry
5. November Rain
6. Breakdown
7. Locomotive
8. Dust N' Bones
9. 14 Years
10. Estranged
11. Yesterdays
12. Coma

I'm going to make Use Your Illusion a double album with 16 tracks:

Civil War
Dust N Bones
Live & Let Die
Locomotive
You Ain't The First
Yesterdays
Knocking On Heaven's Door
Double Talking Jive
You Could Be Mine
Don't Cry (original)
Back Off Bitch
The Garden
Don't Damn Me
Estranged
Garden Of Eden
Coma

Always been a massive fan of the Illusion albums. Sure, it's not all killer and there is some filler. But there really is some quality work over the two discs. Undoubtedly should've just been the one double album though. Would possibly be held in a lot higher regard if this was the case.

Following the Guns/Roses album split which AFD did (the rockers being on one side, the ballady stuff on the other)

1) Right Next Door to Hell
2) Double Talkin' Jive
3) Perfect Crime
4) You Could Be Mine (single B-side 14 Years)
5) Bad Obsession
6) Pretty Tied Up
7) Garden of Eden
8) Coma
9) Don't Cry (single b-side You Ain't The First)
10) Yesterdays
11) November Rain
12) Don't Damn Me
13) Estranged

Single only releases: Civil War, KOHD, LALD

clocks in at 66 minutes.

Well we'll do 14 tracks, since there's 30 tracks in total and AFD was 12 and 12 songs is typically the amount of most albums for any band.

These are my picks in no track order. Just the 12 songs that would've made the greatest album in rock history.

I'm also picking these as what I think are the actual best songs, so I'm being extremely objective. And remember they gotta fit in a 80 minute CD.

Don't Cry 5
November Rain 9
Dust N' Bones 5
Back Off Bitch 5
Civil War 8
14 years 4
Pretty Tied Up 5
You Could Be Mine 6
Knockin On Heaven's Door 6
Right Next Door to Hell 3
Locomotive 9
Don't Damn Me 5

Those are my 12 songs, that I think would of made up the greatest album in rock history.

Notice Estranged and Yesterdays are ommited from my list. I simple think Axl's vocals on yesterdays are bad and Estranged is a good song, but definitley bloated I think.

I based it off of music/guitar work/lyrics and the sound of each song, the song's commercial success had little bearing on my list.

EDIT: I just noticed I left off Bad Obsession. fuck. I'll do another later.

Lots of you are making the albums over 80 minutes lmao

November Rain
Coma
Estranged

That's like 28 minutes people.
