Title: China to Build World's First 'Artificial Sun'
Post by: jameslofton29 on January 24, 2006, 12:35:41 AM
HEFEI - A full superconducting experimental Tokamak fusion device, which aims to generate infinite, clean nuclear-fusion-based energy, will be built in March or April in Hefei, capital city of east China`s Anhui Province.

Experiments with the advanced new device will start in July or August. If the experiments prove successful, China will become the first country in the world to build a full superconducting experimental Tokamak fusion device, nicknamed "artificial sun", experts here said.

The project, dubbed EAST (experimental advanced superconducting Tokamak), is being undertaken by the Hefei-based Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It will require a total investment of nearly 300 million yuan (37 million U.S. dollars), only one fifteenth to one twentieth the cost of similar devices being developed in the other parts of the world.

The new device will be an upgrade of China`s first superconducting Tokamak device, dubbed HT-7, which was also built by the plasma physics institute, in partnership with Russia, in the early 1990s. HT-7 made China the fourth country in the world, after Russia, France and Japan, to have such a device.

"The EAST project research results will be significant for the International Thermonuclear Experiment Reactor, or ITER, in terms of basic research both in engineering technology and physics," said Wan Yuanxi, who is in charge of the project.

Wan said ITER will also be a full superconducting experimental Tokamak fusion device with an advanced configuration, but much larger than EAST.

The program, still in its initial stages, involves Russia, Japan, the United States, the European Union, China and the Republic of Korea.

Controlled nuclear fusion is seen as an efficient way for people to generate infinite, clean energy to offset the dearth of fossil fuels such as oil and coal.

Scientists believe that deuterium can be extracted from the sea and an enormous amount of energy can be obtained from a deuterium-tritium fusion reaction under huge temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius. After nuclear fusion, the deuterium extracted from one liter of sea water will produce energy equivalent to 300 liters of gasoline.

If a device is developed that can withstand temperatures as high as 100 million Celsius degrees and control a deuterium-tritium reaction, it will be as though an "artificial sun" had been created able to supply infinite, clean energy for human beings.
I got this from Angola Press

This article brings up an interesting question. Why aren't we trying to build a bunch of these? We're cooperating with them, but we should be trying this ourselves.

Why do you think?

It's not like people haven't tried. Nobody's had any success. I doubt the Chinese will either.

JET has been the most sucessful as of late.... a new reactor is going to be constructed in France over the next 10 yeas that will produce 500MW

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITER

Jet actualy did produce more engery then was put into the reactor for the fusion to occur. though for only 1 sec...... ITER is designed to last upto 500 seconds and if this works it will really prove the viability of Fusion as a power source

4th gen. of nuclear reactors are already on their ways (2040-2050). 6 ideas are being tossed out.

how bout this they build it then about a week after that it goes critical and it blows up killing all the chinesse ppl the biggest tradgety in modern times..................but they are smart over there theyll giv us some false blueprints to build our own and when we finish it
they made the blueprints to where the thing goes critical and blows us up not including Alaska and Hawaii so if we build one im going to Hawaii for a while

We need better understanding of the science before the technology is fully developed. This isn't going to make energy; it will be used to study fusion. We probably won't live to see fusion power. There are too many problems getting it to work, and there are too many alternatives available. Plain nuclear works fine as it is.

Thats funny. We have about 5000 nukes to prevent that from ever happening.

Take over the world - ever thought he's referring to an economic takeover ::)

fuck economic take over...... well its about the easiest way to cripple the US.... refuse to extend loans that they currently have out...... the borrowing rate would crumble and the economy would fall....... but the easyest way to take over teh world... well westren US and Canada at least, is by what is happening now.... huge influxes of immigrants hell im sure tehy have enough "troops" on the ground now in NA to flaten everything conventialy.... lol... and nukes dont work good agnist your own people now does it?

lol

There are even kosher sushi restaurants, amazing!? :hihi:

chinese-japanese, japanese-chinese, they are like twins I never recognize them. It's like Chang, Yang, Xiang, Wang, Wong, Wing, Wung, Kjian, Xjiung etc... ok let's call them "the chinese", it will be easier, we ALL do the same right?? ;D

PS; and don't say "no", liars!  :hihi:

Point that out

or

Make a joke

I chose choice two......

I couldn't correct the guy and then lay the joke down.....just not the same thing.  :hihi:

If there's any way to control the world, it's with a uniting ideology. So far, radical Islamofascism is working well. It's hard to fight people who suicide bomb.

China will become lazy and slow, just like the West. They have to hold on to their ideals and values if they will survive the coming oil crash.

Walk, that is the most encouraging thing I've heard.  They rely SOOOOO much on oil, that when it's gone, haha, their way of life is over.

Their way of life?

What about ours?

We are the biggest oil whores of them all.

How did we go from a nice little thread about fusion to a thread down the toilet?

I liked Prom's wikipedia links.   So in an attempt to get this thread out of the potty, I'll post it again.

so for a new one...

Japan really.... makes no sence......

Ya, but they have a billion and a half people.  They have more cars and they virtually have no green power.  I saw a program and they just chug down the black gold.

as if teh US dont chug it down..... and how much green do you have?

a very small precentage correct.....Sure india Chugs it down too.....

as for your more cars in 2001 china had 18 million vechicles and of that only 5 mill were cars............ the US has howmany?

http://www.nap.edu/execsumm/030908492X.html

and for estimation sake there are about 1 in 3 that drive cars in the US so that about 100million vehicles.........yup lots more cars there... what about canada?

about 10 mill (statscan) for metro areas not counting rural areas ...... and we only have 34-35 million pop, cant seem to find the rural numbers..... but it should jump by another 2-4 mill?

id love to see that program..... because the last one i scene on it talked about their change fomt he bycle antion to the car nation......and that was only last year, and they talked about the growing need in china and india...... and that it will surpass US demand by 2015 (china) and 2012 (india)

so i dont know where your getting your info

edit: approx figures from Wikipedia is 220 million cars in the US and 500million world wide..... this does not included other veh types

If this was correct, which it is not. What are you trying to say?

The USA consumes 20 million barrels of oil each dayl. More then any other country in the world. China is on the upswing, but is no match of our appetite (sadly).

Green wise, we're a lot better off than China. Hell, Japan is probably the worst off. They have a ridiculous population size compared to their lack of natural resources. Of course, we have the problem of a growing population due to immigration. A high population is the main reason why China is in a worse situation than we are. There simply isn't enough oil to give every Chinese person a car.

China is trying to use oil to become a modern country before the gas runs out. Without oil, they wouldn't be able to make artificial suns and other things.

Finally, we will never, ever repay China.  ;) If anything, the trade deficit is a bigger problem than the federal debt. Their undervalued currency is our worst problem.

Green power is good, but cheap power is better. I'm perfectly happy with my luxurious oil life for now, and I'm ready to pay up a bit more for nuclear when it becomes the next option. In some areas, geothermal and wind power would work, but not here. Nuclear is what we're left with, and it works. China knows this too, of course, but they don't have the fuel reserves we do.  : ok:
