Question about Mezz1...is it better sit on the sides? It's closer to the stage but how is the sound in comparison to sitting in the middle? I guess I should go for the side right?

Title: Greatest Guns show ever?? 5-15-06?
Post by: Minneapolisnewsman on May 16, 2006, 02:18:09 AM
Folks, not much can top that!!!? All guitarists on fire!? Axl, losing his voice, but fighting through it to put on his best show in years!!? The new version of Chinese Democracy (wow--light sabres and all)!!!? So many highlights, I almost lost my breath!!!

On a more important note, it was an honor to meet so many intelligent, brilliant, down to earth, great GNR friends!!!? All of you guy's & beautiful (in more ways than one) girls, I love you and was very happy to meet you!!? It was a great time, and tonights show, was something I will never forget!!!

P.S. Axl, obviously, still loves Izzy, when will he be back on stage.  It seems it will happen???

Oh yeah!!!  They played The Blues, and many other tunes!!!  It was the best Guns show I've seen!!!

Title: Re: Greatest Guns show ever?? 5-15-06?
Post by: The Dog on May 16, 2006, 02:22:36 AM
Not sure if you can say the greatest ever, but def up there.  Sat in the mezz2 tonight, was on the floor friday.  i take back all my comments about Bumble...the dude is sick.  Robin again was great.  Axl, on a back to back night had some trouble in some songs but was just mind blowing in others.

lots of comments about how much he loved nyc.  my fave comment was how "this was the show full of the die hards, the ones who knew about all the pre sale tix" or something to that effect.

he also yelled at someone in the crowd to "cut that shit out"  not sure what they were doing, i saw some people flipping him off, but i think it was something else.

some fuckhead threw a top hat at axl, he barely dodged it, but at 44 he can STILL move pretty fucking quick.  didn't let it phase him.  someone threw a rose up on stage and he took a big sniff of it and then stuck it on his mic stand.

they played the longer, sing along version of heavens door, very cool.

my michelle was brilliant again.  baz RULES.

Axl talked about Izzy a lot, so much that I thought he was gonna show up.  Talked about how izzy wrote the lyric "out to get me" and he said something else about him, oh, how izzy called him up and wanted to know how the shows were going and how he wished him luck etc....

the solos were really really cool this time around.

night train STILL is the best song they are performing, the guitars are just mind blowing.  what else......they played better, IRS, but no TWAT.  crowd on the floor was REALLY rowdy, some brawls, mosh pits and lots of surfers.

OH, best part was, they went WAY past 1pm.  The encore was three songs: patience, CD and PC of course.

time for bed, have a client meeting in 5 hours.  wish the ole hannahat luck on that one!

P.S. - I'd like to give a HUGE thank you to smeagol2124 and his lovely wife...you two are AMAZING and really really nice.  Thanks again for all your help.  usually its the natives who are supposed to help the out of towners but you guys were so great tonight. thank you thank you thank you.

HTGTH......

GOOD

FUCKING

NIGHT!!!!   :peace:

just got back

I met Lindsay Lohan, Mark something ??? from vh1 metal specials, and Sebastian Bach

They started at like 11:05, and went till like 1:40

Same setlist as friday, but RocketQueen instead of TWAT

Axl's voice is still unbeleivable, didnt notice any trouble except he coughed "bullshit" in the middle of patience

low part of the night - i went crowd surfing and lost my bandanna

Post by: darknemus on May 16, 2006, 02:39:01 AM
Couple quick notes.  I'm tired as hell so this will be short.

A. I think tonight's show was better than last nights.  And even better than Friday's.  The energy level, again.. infreakingsane.

B. the "bullshit" cough in patience used to be a staple of the live versions back in 92 / 93.  I almost thought Axl was gonna add back in the 'With your ass in the air" ad-lib for YCBM but instead he let the audience do it for him.

C. I have never been to a better place for a concert than the Hammerstein, and I honestly have to say I don't think I've ever been in a better city in America than NYC.  This place is great.

Title: Re: New York City, USA Hammerstein Ballroom - May 15, 2006
Post by: sweatybronson on May 16, 2006, 03:39:01 AM
Whoa.? First GNR show ever.? I had a ticket in 2002, but they cancelled.? Use Your Illusion 2 was the first CD I've ever owned, back when I was 11.? Been waiting for CD since I thought it was going to be named '2000 intentions.'? First time posting on heretodaygonetohell since the board was in a different format way way way back in the day.?

My ears are still ringing.?

In my opinion, the show was freakin' awesome.? One of the best I've ever been to.? Axl and pals had a ton of energy... he did seem to be kind of losing his voice a little over halfway through the set...but it only really seemed to be affecting him while he talked, and for a little bit during the beginning of Madagascar.? The man still has it.? There were a lot of times, especially during the beginning of the show, when I was trying to study what the other band members were doing, but I couldn't focus on them for very long.? You just can't take your eyes off the Rose-man.? Fuckin' rock legend.?

The highlight-highlight of the night, for me, was probably 'November Rain,' even though there were a few slightly hiccupy transitions.? If I remember correctly, every guitarist had a solo during it, and every one of 'em blew it out of the park...? Bumblefoot especially, during this song, came out of the woodwork.? I had hardly noticed him before.? I've also spent the past few days in NY with an ex-girlfriend, so a lot of the lyrics hit especially close to home and I sorta re-heard them in a way I hadn't.? Nothing lasts forever, even GNR concerts, sadly... But pretty much everything about the show was spot-on and rock-on.? The closer of Paradise City was, as expected, splendiferous, but, unfortunately, I had to focus on the crowd instead of the band for a little while to keep myself and some surrounding people from getting knocked over by drunken ruffians.? But that stuff never really got out of hand...

'low-lights' were probably a few of the solo solo guitar solos...good times to rest a little bit and build up some energy (for the audience And Axl), but I was never overly impressed.? Some were better than others.? I don't really remember much about them.? I couldn't put my finger on a lot of what they were playing...it seemed like they were familiar songs played slightly off-rhythm.? Almost heard a 'yellow leadbetter' in there.? Dizzy's piano solo was pretty...was that 'Maybe I'm Amazed?' or was it a Beatles-Beatles song?? Anyways, I digress...I also didn't cotton as much to I.R.S.? I don't know, it just seemed a bit forced...maybe it's because it's my least-listened to new song, (I've yet to really take to it) but I would've much rather heard TWAT.?

The audience was pretty good, though I'd expected there to be a bit more energy.? There were a few times when dumb little mosh-pits opened up circles to my left and right (To be honest, I've always thought moshing was silly and unnecessary...I'm all about jumping and up down and headbanging and snake-dancing and having fun...which I did.? All night long.? My calves are about to fall off), but other than that, the crowd was pretty gentile.? A lot of hands-in-the-air, a pretty good deal of crowd-surfing (you go Robin...though it kinda looked like the people were a bit unprepared to catch him...) but not as much jumping up and down rockin' as I would've thought...Not as much as a Weezer concert I went to in London, or a Strokes show in Denver CO.? Those shows were cheaper, though...maybe more youngster blokes.? That being said...

what I assumed to be the Here-today-gone-to-hell contingency (one of y'all had that 'you're crazy, gimme some twat, heretodaygonetohell' sign) was doin' it right...a lot of energy while waiting in the line (I walked past at one point...none of you knew I read this board, and you probably didn't even think I was going to the show.? I'm dressed like a damn preppie right now.? Clean-shaven face, short preppy hair, slacks, frikkin' nice-ish sweater, pretty-boy-jaw-line... You were screaming 'guns and roses rules, etc....'? I high-fived a couple of you and yelled 'rock and fuckin' roll'...? It was magical)? and during the show, and it all seemed to be really positive.?

Sorry I can't provide too many specifics about each song, or the order, yada yada.? The whole thing was just incredible, energy-filled, joygasmic.? But basic summary is that I came in feeling pretty tired, and, once the lights went down and I felt the surreality of my first-favorite band blistering into 'WTTJ,' I couldn't stop dancin' or jumpin' for almost 2 and a half hours, and it was fuckin' exhilarating .? I'm glad I don't have a job to wake up to tomorrow.? I can't hear very well, except the ringing, and my voice is shot from all the singin' and screamin' (I don't know how Axl does it...)I kinda wish I had tickets for the 17th...hrmmm...maybe I'll change some plans.?

peace, and apologies for the overly-long parantheticals, but I'm sure you all can deal -? ?

sweaty

p.s. - Axl quotes that I can remember (they're not perfect transcriptions) -
After the song when Robin jumped into the crowd, Axl said he'd gone over to ask him if he was okay, 'and Robin said 'This is what I live for.'?

Axl did mention that he had heard from Izzy, and that Izzy had wished him good luck with the show, and that 'New York's where it's always been about, hasn't it..'? Or something along those lines.? He said a few times that 'New York has always been good to us.'

When introducing Baz, he stuttered a bit while saying 'short notice,' and proceeded to mock himself, saying 'shnort sotice, nort shortice, etc.etc.' for a little while.?

At some point he said something, jokingly apparently, about how he had low self-esteem and felt insecure.?

He repeatedly said 'you guys are the motherfucking die-hards who buy tickets in the first three minutes' or something along those lines.?

He did cough out a 'bullshit' or two during 'Patience...'? Apparently he's not quite the romantic he used to be:-)? Must be a bit weird to disagree with your own song after a while.? I forget exactly which lines he said it after...

Axl told some little story...can't remember it exactly...and at the end of it he said 'That's the kind of shit that happens when you're a band.? And it's taken us eight years to be a band, but here we are.'

*things I forgot*:
Axl mentioned that he'd talked to Lars, Lars from Metallica, I assume.  I remember reading that Lars said he really liked Madagascar when he heard it at the VMAs...after Axl mentioned talking to Lars, the band busted into Maddy.  Maybe that's what they talked about.

Also, Axl said, again, that Better was a Robin song.  And that the lyrics he'd written 'fit.'  He said he heard it, and decided to call it the 'Better' Song, as sort of a smart-ass move.  "Axl Rose being a smart ass, who would've thought, *chuckle chuckle."  I sort of got the vibe that he was talking about Robin being better than Slash...but that's only my inference.

Other tidbits - After Robin and Richard's guitar-duo, Fortus kissed Robin on the forehead.?

Axl seemed to be intentionally saving Robin for last when he introduced the band...I think it's good that Buckethead's not there to make things all disjointed and wacky...Having a definitive lead-gun makes for a good rock band.? Page and Plant, Mick and Keith, Stevey T. and Joey P., Eddie and Dave, Axl and Robin.?

Axl leaned into and put his arms around his guitarists while singing a few times...I don't remember him doing this with Bumblefoot.?

Robin spent a pretty good deal of time jammin' in the back with Brain and the keyboardists.?

Dizzy should keep his shirt on.?

Sorry for how long this was...I can't get to sleep.? Luckily, I don't really need to:-)
?

When Axl (I think it's Axl) plays with Lightsaber, it's a pretty hilarious moment. LOL
I'm not sure it's Axl because it's completely dark.

The moshing at this show was just insane. No way I would venture anywhere near the front (or middle), especially if you plan on having a drink in your hands. The crowd surfing was cool though.

Robin starts then stops a few times the opening chords to Chinese Democracy a few times before really kicking off the song.

Another funny moment is when Axl refers to us as the "diehards" "the first day motherfucking ticketbuyers".

The light sabre cracked me up, too.

I also loved the story about going out with a sweatshirt on and a hat and sunglasses and trying to make himself not be noticed and then a guy in a truck pulls up and goes "Yo Axl!" (in a pretty good brooklyn accent) haha... he's like "How the hell did he know?! that's how New York has always been, they just know" He said a lot of cool stuff about NY. He said it's always been about NY.

And yeah, he was teasing us by talking about Izzy all night.. that was pretty tormenting, everyone was expecting him to show up.

And he yelled at a security gaurd, I think. I'm not sure what he was trying to make someone stop doing, but the gaurd came back looking pretty embarassed.

He also stoped in the middle of a song to ask "is that guy alright?" after some crowd surfer fell really hard. This was right in front of me and you could hear his head the bars and I cringed - which is what Axl saw I think 'cause he asked if he was ok... and I guess he was. The guy was so drunk I'm sure he didn't notice, but I bet he's feelin' it today!

And then yeah, when he was stuttering before introducing Baz... that was kinda funny.

I also loved when he came up to the front of the stage between songs and was like "Yes?? People always do that, they scream 'AXL!' and it's like, yeah, I'm right here. What can I do for ya?"

And my personal highlight of the night: ?So Sunday night I met Ron and I talked to him and joked around and shot the shit with him by the stage door. So last night I was front row against the gate again and he came over by where I was at one point and recognized me. He smiled and nodded at me, this huge grin as if he had just ran into his best friend or something. I was blown away. I went back to the door again and he came out and was like "hey! You're back! I saw ya out there!" and he asked me which night I liked the best, etc. ?I can't get over how nice that guy is. He's so cool... he really appreciates the fans.

Best fuckin show of all time. Everything was perfect, it was my first GNR show, and now im glad that i didnt go back in 2002. Thats not the guns show I wanted to see. The chinese democracy songs were unbelievable. Robin was the greatest guitar player of all time. Tommy was energetic as hell. Axl sang perfectly. It was unbelievable.

The only down points of the night would be the rediculous solos in between songs, and Sebastian Bach, it was really cool that he came out and sang on my michelle, but Axl was singing it perfect, and he was screaming, I would of liked it better had it just been Axl. Any ways i saw axl live and he was everything hes ever been built up to be and more.

Oh yeah (you're crazy i beleive) while you were waiting online you were with some red haired guy, he was the biggest douche bag ive ever met. He thought he was cool hi fiving people on the street, I hate him. That was some shit I wouldve pulled in 6th grade, he was a grown man, he made himself look like a fool.

There were some good punches being thrown to the right of the stage before GN'R came out. LOL

He thought he was cool hi fiving people on the street, I hate him. That was some shit I wouldve pulled in 6th grade, he was a grown man, he made himself look like a fool.

lol, I was with him too. Cool dude.

Anyway, everyone else covered the show pretty well, but I'll add that it was my first GNR show and it completely blew me away. Best fuckin' show I have ever seen! We were on the right side of the stage and pretty damn close. I could have spit in Axl's eye and messed up his contact if I wanted to! lol, just kidding. The energy from everyone in the band was incredible. Axl can move faster and for longer than me and I'm only 21. And holy shit can that guy sing! He sounded ridiculously fantastic. His voice sounded a little tired in one or two songs but he overcame it immediatelty and kept on belting out great tunes with that awesome rasp. He was smiling and laughing all night, seemed to be having a great time. What was the deal with the basket of apples? lol, I got excited for a minute and thought they were gonna bust out Bad Apples.
? ? ? ? Robin was incredible. I've always been a fan but last night was the best I ever heard him play. He destroyed the solos, made them his own completely. It was cool to hear that he wrote the music to Better and that Axl wrote the lyrics. Tommy was on the ball as usual, Richard must be on speed, the dude has so much energy. The Fortus and Finck solo was really cool. Was that "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera they were playing? Whatever it was was amazing. Brain was great as usual, a big smile on his face. Pittman was going nuts on those keyboards, rocking the fuck out, though I'm not really sure what sounds he made. Dizzy was great as well. Such a talented player. The Beatles song before the Blues was a great touch. All in all, an amazing performance, one which will never be rivaled in my book. Some in the crowd were dicks, starting fights and what not, but that happens everywhere. Met some great people from the boards and had an awesome time.

Regardless on how much that song sucks, Robin, and Fortus are basically telling the audience

"Thats right people, we are cover artists, we cant write our own stuff, we could only add and slighty change what the real artists are writing"

Which is why they Must play the new songs more during the set so i dont get an e-mail review from VH1 that says

"Guns N' Roses Live: Basically Axl With A GN'R Cover Band, But Great Anyway
And the band hit the stage just an hour and 15 minutes late!"

Was anyone near that moron, far left of the satge who kept screaming AXL at the top of his lungs? I was right next to him, and wanted to strangle that fool!! He dropped his cell phone twice....really nice people gave it back to him, even after he fell all over me and a few other people cause he was piss drunk!! Then he got drunker....and stared chanting "AXL ROSES"...everyone around him was just laughing at him. What a waste of a ticket he was.
All in all I had a great time, it was better than the Friday show I was also at...they seemd more "together" Axl had more to say also. I thought I seen someone right upfront holding a sign that said "AXL COME BACK TO PHILLY" It was hard to read backwards, but im pretty sure thats what it said, and I think late in the show, he said something like "soon brotha..soon" And that little section cheered....I could be wrong though...anyone remember that part too?

how are Bumblefoot's solo's in between songs, does? he just thrash or do somethin' cool???????

I was not impressed with Bumblefoot at this show. He had his own shredding solo, and he fucked it up. He broke a string and it sounded like his guitar was cutting out.

The rest of the band was really tight. I loved it when Finck jumped into the crowd, and he was all fucked up when he came out of it.

I think they played 17 songs, and Axl acknowledged us as being the first bunch to buy tickets. I had perfect seats, seating directly in the front row middle (I was the first one in Mezz 2 as we waited since 5pm in the line to get it.) of Mezz 2. Mr. I traded me for my floor tickets. Wow, what a show!!! I just got back to Canada, and I haven't slept in 48 hours. My fiance was dancing throughout the show, and she loves GnR' now.

A lot more stories to tell from that night, but really I can't keep my eyes open. Talk to you all soon.

Oh, thanks Mr. I again, I will never forget this show.

I also no for a fact that there is a bootleg audio and video for this show, as I was standing beside the folks that were doing it. It was a perfect location for it. When will we see this, who knows.

Hey, i was wondering if anyone else noticed this.

If you were facing the stage on the floor and you were looking up at the top seating section to the far right, did anyone notice this guy with long blonde hair and decked out in "rocker gear" or whatever. He almost looked like Vince Neil, or what Matt Sorum looked like in the Illusion days. People up there seemed to be giving him a lot of attention. He also left shortly after they played SCOM or The Blues.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed him and was wondering who he was. Was he just a fan or was it Vince Neil or something.

It was bret michaels, I was right in the front middle of the mezz and I noticed him right off the start.

security guard confirmed it was Vince Neil, he looked like shit, I guess they have to announce over their radios who is in the building, regardless he left about 3 songs on with a digusted look matched only by lenny kravitz the night before

LOL   :hihi:  I hate to say this but he was drunk thanks to me.  Before the show I hooked everyone at the front of the line with some Nightrain.  I brought 3 bottles as thanks for holding my spot and all 3 were gone in like an hour or so.  He was downing the shit pretty quick.

I knew he was fucked up when he kept asking the same people for cigs like...200 times.

Lenny Kravitz didn't look disgusted when I seen him.. he was singing along to "Nightrain" on Sunday.

Was he a taller guy about 6ft or so with dirty blonde hair. Left side middle back about 10 to 15 off of stage? Real loud guy He kept talking about this girl with dark hair how he loved her.  Yelling all the time, if so I was right next to him up until GNR came on.  I actually gave this guy 20 bucks when he was going to get beer.  We got him stoned also. He actually went and got me 2 beers he kept my change but i did not care. I have to admit I got so stoned i could not move for the first 5 or 6 songs. I was plastered. I could hear everything but I could not move much.

In this article, it says Lenny was actually singing the new songs (well, at least that's what I understood):

did anyone see that woman she was in the second balcony on the left side of the stage, she was wearing that one piece skin tight dress,? had to be one of the best looking woman ive ever seen?

Funny you mention her. She was with another skinny girl wearing jeans right?
My buddy talked to her and asked her how she got those great seats. She told him that she was "sort of" dating Axl.
Was she telling the truth? I guess we gotta wait for pictures of the 2 of them together.

Could she be the "Caroline / Carolina" girl who Axl dedicated a song to on the 12th?  He looked to the left Mezz 1 when he said it - she was absolutely stunning, standing and dancing the whole time, and had 1-2 attractive female friends with her as well.

Yeah, that sounds like him....he was wearing like a black windbreaker Jordan jacket....and his girl was wearing a jean jacket. What a pain the ass!! Where were you? I was the big guy wearing the long sleeve t shirt with red GnR on the front. I was near this guy almost the entire show. I wish I would have known you were getting people "stoned" lol.....what  a great show!!

I just got back from NYC today, ac ouple things about the show from Monday IMO...

Too many slow songs and solos in the set...kind of bogged things down too much. It's funny that Robin and Richards duet was the only solo I enjoyed and didnt realize it was beautiful.

The funniest Axl comment was about the girl screaming to him I wanna hear Dont Cry you spoiled rotten mother fucker...that was funny

The ylooked more like a "band" with Axl not wearing baggy clothes, no Buckethead, and Robin not looking Goth...they just looked more together. I really think that Chris and Bumblefoot could be left at home, and they might even be better..8 is a crowd.

My fav songs were Out Ta Get Me,YCBM, Patience,Nightrain,IRS(the best "new" song live IMO)

The lowlights were KOHD, which sounded messy, probably should be dropped cause the set has too many slow songs anyways, The Blues, which I dont like other than Dizzy's piano intro...and the solos

Everything else was cool, I liked Better also, the more they play it and find the groove from the demo, this song will only get..."better" live. The metal part rocked.

Well... I had studied how Axl threw the microphone and the whistle in the shows before the 15th.... and Axl decides not to throw them on this show!!!! ...... damn it!!.... why should that be??.........

Here's my belated review.

I had a fantastic time, it was unreal seeing Axl live in person, and singing along to the songs with everyone in the audience. The highlight for me was November Rain when the golden streamers rained down from the ceiling and Axl was at the piano tickling the ivories. UNREAL.  I just stood there transfixed.

A big thanks to Jarmo, Mysteron and all others who made this possible, this was one of the best nights of my life!
