I'm trying to book Hotel arrangements for J'ville FL.  What's is close, within walking distance ???  Thanks for the help from J'ville folks or people that are familiar with the area!!!

Off the top of my head I can't think of a hotel within walking distance.  You can find plenty of hotels in the business district by the river, and its only a fifteen minute drive or so to the arena from there.

The Omni is probably the closest, but it's still about 1.5 miles away.  It's probably best to actually park close to the stadium that late at night.

Looks like the same supporting acts here... pretty cool, last time I saw Mr. Bach live was with Skidrow & Pantera in Dallas, TX.

This will (fingers crossed) be my 3rd time seeing GNR, I don't recall the dates exactly, but I saw them open for Motley Crue here in Jax before most people knew em/ with soundgarden in St. Pete when they were huge and if all goes well here again in 3 weeks.  Oh, I also had tix to the Tampa 02 show, but we all know how that turned out....

FYI TO ALL GOING TO THIS SHOW......

The floor has been changed to GA. Your pre-sale, up close seats (mine where row 8!!!) are no more. This is pure fucking bullshit! Anyway, if you don't want GA, call Ticketmaster or whoever you bought them with and they will exchange them. Don't expect good seats though.

yea, that sucks because I know I like to get the best seats for my money and I woulda been pissed to pay for the closest seats only to have them relocate me farther away unless I want to stand.?

The seating chart shows assigned floor seats still and they have been on sale for about 3 weeks. Now it is GA but the chart hasn't changed, wonder how well thats gunna go over for people that find out when they get there.

I do hope the sales pick up before the show, after all it is the kick off to the official tour...the only tickets that are gone are the cheapest (38.50) ones, the floor looked almost full until the who GA incident.

Myself, I've been sweating it because I won tickets through a local radio station before they went on sale and they haven't called me yet to pick them up. They said they weren't in , so I am wondering how good the seats will be or if there will be some sort of mix up.....

This SUCKS!!!  I had 10th row seats!  I'm pissed.  I'm sure this must have to do with the local promoter being greedy...I would have bought second tier seating for cheaper had I known this!!!! I have had my share of GA seats to concerts in the past, I'm getting to old for this now.

This SUCKS!!!? I had 10th row seats!? I'm pissed.?

I imagine plenty of people will feel that way, just think, some people won't find out til they get there. Not likely to be a good feeling when they are completely oblivious to the change in seating plans.? I bet anyone who purchased off ebay/broker will feel ripped off too. They are charging a lot for what they think are great floor seats.?

When I found out yesterday, I called the venue and they said this was just recently changed and if you bought from Ticketmaster they would contact you. I went ahead and called them and changed my tickets for seated ones. If I showed up and just then found out about the change, there would be hell to pay!!!! I'm sure this will happen to a lot of people.

I don't mind paying a premium for good seats, but with GA you pay the same price and it's a free-for-all. Not a problem for someone of my size, but my wife couldn't hang. Plus, if someone started pushing her around I'd end up getting kicked out or arrested.

Same situation for me. I think I could handle a GA show but my wife is gonna not be happy. I had 14th row seats I got in the pre sale. I'm not sure if Id be better off getting lower level seats vs staying with my GA. Never been to a GA show so I really dont know what to expect. We are both 33 so I'm not into mosh pits or getting elbowed & shoved excessively. I have a feeling Ill end up inthe back 3rd of the fllor since my wife cant handle being packed in to a crowd & standing for hours on end to keep a good spot. Would I be able to even see the stage from the back of the GA floor?  Any advice?

You're not gonna believe this!!! Now, when you go on ticketmaster & look for tickets, you get sect f1 row 12. In other words they are back to floor seats again?!?  WTF? I am happy as hell about that, but what happens to the GA people who bought in the last couple of days? Maybe Ticketmaster go so much shit about it they went back to the original plan?

I just called the venue and they said it's GA and Ticketfucker messed up.

EDIT: I called Ticketmaster and they too confirmed it's GA. They said this has happened in a lot of stops for the tour. Floor is GA through the whole tour. So they fucked this up and seem to continue to do so.

Yep you need to call ticketmaster asap. I just got off the phone with them, and they had my tickets changed (which were originally Section F1, Row 14) to Section 101, Row L, which is right next to the stage left side of the stage. It was kinda frustrating, because they had no idea of what I was first talking about, as supposedly nobody had told them about it.

Anyone know where the club reserved seats are?

When I called, they said club seating was 103, 104, 105.....back around to 114. She said there is nothing in 103 or 114. She also said they have seats in 101/116, but the closest row is L (going A-Y, A being closest to floor). She said it may be closer to the stage, but the view is not the best, even more so farther up in rows. I went with 104, row E.

I got switched to 114 sect D. They are the club seats that were referred to, told me they were the best available at this point. He also said it was not their fault, that Guns N Roses were the ones to change things. That was pure bullshit.  Cost me $5.00 more per ticket. I argued with them ( they mention exchanging them on their web site) but they wouldn't do it.  For $10.00 it wasn't worth the time and aggirvation.

Actually I'm not dissapointed with these seats after looking at the venue map. Not far from where my non-existing floor seats were.

If you still have floor seats and dont want GA call ASAP before the rest of the decent seats are gone.

I could see it being Guns N Roses fault if it was just this one show, but this seems to be the case for a couple otherss. I'm surprised it cost you $5 more per ticket. I've changed mine twice now (had floor, then 105 row D, now 104 row E) and no change in price or extra charge. They kept my same order number all this time. Did they explain why they charged more?

Hey, I just got new tix for the second floor.  I thought I would get a $30 refund per seat but they told me NO! It was the same price for floor seats on 116!  This is bullshit.  If I had known this I would not have gotten tickets at all!  I spent a bunch of money on nearby hotel rooms.  I could cancel but it would cost me my deposit.  Ticket Master Sucks!  I will be there anyway.  I'm just a stupid die hard fan.  I want to start a TICKET MASTER SUCKS THREAD in the main section but I fear I would get a slap on the hand from the mods or Jarmo for doing so...  Anyway, that's my rant...... Peace out....See y'all at the show.

I was even charged $5.00 more per ticket when I swapped my seats.  Ill help out with the TM sucks thread, I feel the same way you do.  I dont want to get bitch slapped either though.

EDIT: The expination for more expensive tockets:

Our records indicate you were charged the additional $10.20 for the order due to the fact that these seats are Club Level, and includes food service. You are able to order food from your seat location, while servers come and take your order, not all sections do offer this service.

If they are able to bring the beer to me, it is worth it!!
But I dont want to even guess how much a beer will be!!

2 weeks left....

TicketBastard still can't get their act together, I just searched for tickets and they are coming up with Section F1 Row 6? lol

The ebayers are draggin on updating the listings, some have and reduced the price and listed as GA, while others are still claiming they have great floor seats. I hope the potential buyers are better informed.

I still haven't gotten a call from the local radio station that I won tickets from...seems like they should have em by now. Maybe I need to go camp out at their doorstep.?

..still get floor seats on TMs website.  Why they havent updated to list GA floor tickets is amazing.

EDIT- GA seating now listed again

Edit again: back to listing floor seats. Hope the concert sells out but is this an ethical way to do it ??

I hope this is a Ticketmaster fuck-up. I can't find it either. This is the only show I can get to so they better not cancel !!!!!!!?

The parking is still on sale with Ticketmaster, so hopefully this is just a minor problem.

I called ticketmaster and the rep had no idea why it wasn't there, gave possiblilities of the show being sold out, but in my experience that is not likely. When do they ever remove listings from being sold out?? I am hoping it is some kind of update. All I can say is at least it doesn't list the dreaded "Canceled" by the listing.

I know for a while they had problems with still having assigned floor seats still being offered even though it's GA. Maybe they took it down to fix this issue?  ???

I may be out as well now, I have 3 kids and it's going to be hard to convince the wife that I don't need to go trick or treating with them...besides, I am still waiting to hear from the radion station to come pick up my tickets that I won. Not sure how that works for a contest when an event gets rescheduled.

Well, the tn date was added after the florida shows were confirmed.
Now it looks like the official kickoff will be at Gaylord Focker Entertainment Center...real nice :P...so, we get em after they hit puerto rico?
I am starting to doubt this show will take place altogether now with the 3 other florida dates already scheduled.

I would think Jacksonville is too big a market to pull the plug completely. That would really piss alot of people off. But then again, remember Philly......................

Sucks its been rescheduled from a Friday to a tuesday. Had it all planned out. Hotel room, party in Jax after the show, the wife had saturday off work.......

Looks like a mad dash to the show after work on halloween, Jax is a   2 1/2 hr drive for me.

Yeah just like they moved the California/Reno (I had tix for Reno) shows without any explanation.  People make travel plans to make these shows.  All we get are self-promotional press releases like "GNR Own New York."  Yeah pat yourself on the back and fuck over your diehard fans.

I wonder if that means Sebastian Bach won't be at this one on the rescheduled date. I know he can't make the puerto rico show 2 days earlier.

Even so, the halloween date won't fair well for me to attend. I still have hope, but it doesn't look good.

I wonder if this is a Ticketmaster fuck up? The fact that Ticketmaster is our only source, the date for this show on the front page here has not been changed, Jarmo deleted the discussion thread about the rescheduled date, gunsnroses.com still says Oct 20th, the venue still says Oct 20th, no "official statement" yet ( but we can expect one according to Jarmo). Untill Merck says something I am keeping my original travel plands & accomidations.

I haven't made any hotel reservation for this very reason. I plan on making them Thursday if this date holds. 10/31 is not a possiblity for me for most of the same reasons I read on this and the deleted thread. With a family, work and being around 2 1/2 hours away I just can't.

Let's pray Ticketmaster just dropped the ball on this one. Like GnRFL said, there may be some hope after all. I just hope we get official word......soon  :P (just had to use that word, it just fits with any GnR discussion).

You are the same distance from the show as I am, not an easy trip during the work week. Being halloween makes it even harder.

No official e-mail from GNR mgmt. or ticketmaster ( ther than their web site). There is hope we are still on for the 20th!!

Unfortunately for me and for many others if this is true, alot of us are parents and in the work force.  Oct. 20th was the perfect date (especially for me since I am only 2 hours away by car).  However, Oct. 31st is completely out of the question.  I have a daughter to spend Halloween with and a job to go to the next day.  Oh well....I hope it's not true.  But odds are that it probably is.

What ticks me off about these fuckers is that they should not penalize anybody for this shit. If you want a refund, they should give an full refund. Yea, it's only 8 bucks or so service fee, but it's the principle of the thing. When did Jarmo say anything about a press release?

an email I received today:

Dear Guns N Roses Fan,
We previously contacted you to let you know that the upcoming Guns N
Roses concert at the Jacksonville Arena had changed from a Reserved
Seating floor plan to a General Admission, Standing Room Only floor
plan. We do not have record of contact from you, and as stated in our
previous notice, we will be exchanging your Reserved Floor Seating to
General Admission, Standing Room Only tickets.
Starting Monday, October 16, Ticketmaster will be sending your valid
General Admission, Standing Room Only tickets for the upcoming Guns N
Roses concert at the Jacksonville Arena. Your new tickets will be sent
to you in the same manner your original tickets were shipped. For
example, if you had selected ticketFast as your delivery, your new
tickets will be sent to you by ticketFast.
The new tickets you are receiving are for General Admission Floor access
and carry a unique and secure barcode, which is the key to entry to the
event. The bar codes on your original tickets with reserved seating
floor designations have been voided, thus making them null and void.
Please destroy and discard the original Guns N Roses tickets.
Again, the original tickets designated as Reserved Floor Seats, are now
considered voided and will not gain entry into these events.
Please note, the concert has changed from Friday, October 20, 2006 to
Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 8:00pm. If you are unable to attend on
Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 8:00pm, please contact our Customer Service
Department. You may contact us online at
http://www.ticketmaster.com/h/customer_serve.html or by calling your
local Ticketmaster Charge-by-Phone number and selection the option for
previously placed orders and then the option for returning a call from
Customer Service. Please have your Ticketmaster Order number as well as
the credit card used to place your order available when calling. The
local Ticketmaster number for Jacksonville is 904-353-3309.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and really appreciate your
business.

Great, the only thing consistent here has been the lack of consistency! :hihi:  Well, at least I finally got my free tickets that I scored from a local radio station before they went on sale. They aren't the best seats (Sec 107 Row Z) but free is free. I guess they coulda stuck me with the cheaper ones instead of mid price range.

Although I would like to attend the show in it's entirety, I likely will have to try and make it there by the time GNR get ready to go on. That gives me time to speed through the neighborhood and take my kids out for some door to door begging. I couldn't convince the wife that I didn't need to participate in my sons first halloween. ;)

Now I'll just try to find someone to join me since she can no longer use our other ticket...That is if nothing else changes....13 days is a long time for some more curve balls to get thrown at us.

Maybe they'll wind up rescheduling the other dates and we will be the tour kickoff site after all!  J/K

I was lucky enough to convince my wife to still go & ask her boss  if she could come in a few hours late the next day since I anticipate getting home at 2:30-3:00 AM  ( I live about 2 1/2 hrs south of Jacksonville)

I wont be able to get there till 8:30 most likely.

Most GNR fans arent in college anymore & have families & real jobs. This rescheduling & now starting the show earlier makes it more difficult to get there before Baz starts.

Row Z doesnt sound real promising, but you cant beat a free ticket. I spent almost $200.00 for 2 after all the fees & shit.

Yea, maybe that gets me closer to the exit so I can beat some people out. lol  I am a bummed that she's not getting to go, she is about 5 years younger than me, so she wasn't really into them in her formative years. This would have been her first real arena rock show, but I appreciate her sacrifice so I can still make it there. Gets hard to find a babysitter for tuesday nights and the kids have school in the morning.

I hope my seat is not smack in the middle of the row, that has happened to me too many times at Bucs games. Miller Lite doesn't make it any easier.

I did notice that they dropped the 38.50 ticket prices down to 25 bucks, guess they are trying to push to get more seats filled.  I know it appears a bunch of tickets were back up, likely due to the date change, I wonder how full it will be.

According to the map on TM, it doesnt look like the venue is as big as Tampa or Sunrise, but bigger than Estero. Being on a weeknight & Halloween along with the majority fan base being late 20's-30's, not sure how much of a sellout its gonna be. I had to completely re-arrange my schedule and my wife is taking 1/2 day off work so we can go.

Some kind of special promo going on now. Seats in my section are now $48.50 ( I paid full price weeks ago).

Rescheduling for Halloween probrally was not their best idea, lots of people wont make it who were going on Oct 20th.

Yea, I am going with my brother now since we couldn't get a baby sitter for the wife to go.   I can't complain about the discounted tickets since I got free ones off the radio, pretty crappy seats, but you get what you pay for.  heh heh

My Review:

Just making it to the stage before Halloween came to a close, Guns n Roses provided many treats to those in attendance.

Axl Rose appearing on stage in horns (possibly to acknowledge his persona) was enough to keep fans in the spirit even past the stroke of midnight.

That sight alone, made the cheesy Wal-Mart bought inflatable d?cor thrown together forgivable. The man himself felt it was necessary to announce during the show that he was not responsible for picking it out.

The technical and theatrical competence demonstrated on stage proved that this incarnation of GNR is as deserving as those previously accepted. And was it just me, or were their hints of Lynyrd Skynyrd's ?Free Bird? thrown into the piano solo?

The Gunners played a solid two hour set. All the standards were represented with a couple of new songs mixed in to justify the ?Chinese Democracy Tour? label and merchandise being sold.

Some may say that attendance was disappointing. The upper level was closed off and people were relocated to fill in the lower sections. But when considering what the rescheduling put people up against, I think those that could show up did in a big way.

The show went off with out a hitch and there were no tricks to be played?unless you count the way many might feel when they get up in the morning and try to go about their daily routines.

I'll just post some quick impressions from the show before I crawl into work today.

Sebastian came on about 8:30 to do his set. Pretty good. I think someone told him to extend his set sometime towards the end. He kept trying to get the band to play Chain Gang but they didn't want to try it. They added one of their new songs to extend the set a bit. He then dissed the crowd and walked off stage, before coming back on about a minute later to close with Youth Gone Wild.

Then there was over an hour wait for Papa Roach. I don't think they came on til close to 10pm. Not much to say here, I'm not a huge fan, lead singer had a lot of energy. They finished around 11pm. At this point the crowd is decent, but a lot of empties and a LOT of room on the floor. I'm thinking the move to Halloween killed their potential sell out, although the stadium down here is pretty big.

GnR came on a few minutes before midnight. Awesome set. First time I've ever seen them live and it was well worth it. When they started up with WTTJ the place exploded. It also looked pretty full when their set started. There's not much to say that hasn't been said in all of the other reviews. Axl still has it, and the band plays absolutely great together. Only did two new songs tonight, Better and the Blues. Both sounded great live. I'm assuming they cut IRS and CD due to the lack of a crowd, and the time they came on. Paradise city encore was amazing though. Always impressive seeing a great indoor pyrotechnics display.

My only complaint was the lack of new material. Most of the fans around me though, had no idea a new album was coming out yet alone the fact that GnR was going to perform new songs tonight. In my opinion they need to announce a release date and get the PR machine rolling. The crowd seemed very receptive to the new material.

Left my house at 4:30PM - got in at 4:30AM. In between ( not counting the 5 hrs of driving)- Priceless!

About the venue itself: Jacksonville Arena is a great place to see a show. Any seat you get has a pretty decent view of the stage. The stage was more forward in the arena than TM showed on the maps- most likely due to less of a crowd than originally anticipated. My wife & I were right by the left corner of the stage, 4 rows up from the floor. With the stage closer, it put me really close to the stage. IMO I had the best seats in the house.  They were club seats, so we had food and a bar available, which was convenient. No long lines for the restrooms! GA diddnt fill up.  A few emptys here & there at the lower level as well. Nobody was in the upper level. Being a weeknight & Halloween affected attendence I'm sure. But it certainly did not take away from the show whatsoever.

Ill try not to retread too much of what has already been posted:

Sebastian Bach took the stage a bit before 8:30 &  played for a little over an hour, he did a decent amount of new songs ( probrally about 4-5) mixed in with the Skid Row classics. Bach mentioned he was going to play a longer than normal set, but don't get your pantys in a bunch, Axl is in the building. Still has an amazing voice and his backing band was really good. Got the crowd warmed up.  There still was not a lot of people there when he was on. Set ended a little after 9:30.

It took a while for the stage to get set up for Papa Roach. There was a long peiod of time where I was wondering what they were waiting for.

Papa Roach came on about an hour after Bach left the stage. This is when people started really showing up. Say what you will about them, but the crowd was really into it. Jacoby Shaddix ( think I got the name right) was great working the crowd. Their set was pretty good and these guys are professionals, they nailed the songs really well. Set ended about 11:30.

Then an army of workers decended on the stage to get GNR set up.

GNR came on about 11:50. When Jungle came on, the crowd went NUTS! It was the usual setlist they've been doing minus some stuff. Better & The blues were the only 2 new songs played. I used to love her was not played. No Rocket Queen. Dizzy's solo was different than Ive heard on the bootlegs with Frank playing drums behind him, I did not recognize the song. I did notice the sweet smell of weed around me at one point. Axl made a comment about "something smells good in here. The "Robin & Richard did play beautiful. My Michelle was done with Bach, Axl mentioned this was becoming a routine that they do. BFoot played some halloween appropriate material in his solo ( Halloween theme, Munsters theme), then into Dont Cry. After Nightrain, it only took a minute or so for thenm to come out for the encore, which consisted only of Paradise City. All this talk about Tommy not enjoying these shows is bullshit, he seemed to have a ball last night. I was really looking forward to hearing Chinese Democracy or Madagascar, but it diddnt happen. They finished up about 1:45 or so, Im thinking perhaps the city may have had some type of ordinance on playing a concert after 2AM? It did not seem Axl was rushing thru anything, he gave the crowd 100% in his performance and seemed to enjoy himself.

Great concert, my 1st GNR show. For those who complain about the same set list, just go to a show and you wont care. The greatest concert of my life was last night.

My Review:

Just got home, long trip.  Anyway, all three bands sounded great.  I was really suprised by how well Papa Roach did,  I have never really been a big fan.  More of a fan now.

I wish they could have played more new songs other than Better and the Blues but it still was a great show.  The band seemed to be in a great mood.  I did not notice any TDs with GNr, I was suprised.

Going to bed now.  Did not sleep much last night due to when the shoe ended and I had to drive a long way to get home.  I will add a few new tibits later.

I thought I would post a review since others are nice enough to do so.

First off I would like to give a big FUCK YOU to the arena and the shit security they had. I saw at least fifteen people thrown out, and only three deserved it. Anyone that dressed as Slash for Halloween was turned away at the door with a very friendly I Dont Give A Shit attitude. They quit selling beer an hour before GNR came on (I snuck into the Arena Club and managed to get four more beers!). And last but not least its a fucking rock show, people were being scolded like two year olds for having reasonable fun.

The Show:
Not much new here, The set list was the same as usuall minus IRS and CD. Axl wore small devil horns at the start, and Ron had a rams head/skull mask on and off throughout the show. Robin?, I cant tell if he was dressed up or just being Robin. The band was amazing and Axl's vocals were spot on. The only things I noticed were a few missed notes by Fink, (Dont get mad I think he has improved greatly), and the vocals durring the soft areas in Better kinda sucked. Axl seemed to get pissed at someone and said, "Cute, Real Cute", in a pissed off voice. Not real sure what that was about. I think the poor crowd turnout (only about half the arena by the end) was due too the rescheduling but whatever. Even after the fact of the crowd turnout Axl still thanked everyone sincerely and said, "Happy Hallowfuckingween!"

Overall I loved it. Ive been waiting ten years to get my GNR cherry popped and it was worth the 6 1/2 hour drive and the lame ass security. Wish I could have heard IRS and my personal favorite TWAT but at least I finally got to see Guns N Fuckin Roses.

That's pretty pathetic if you ask me. I can understand if they were wearing "Axl Sucks" type stuff or doing it to provoke Axl, but if you show up to a show on Halloween dressed as a very popular former bandmember who is known for his outlandish image, well... I don't agree with their actions, let's put it that way.  :)

That's not right.

I'm going to get flamed for this but I disagree with some of the stuff going on in terms of security. I can totally understand kicking someone out for heckling Axl, but when you have fans who may have traveled hours and paid a lot of money to see a show and are dressing as Slash/Buckethead with no harm meant, and they're denied admittance because of this...that's low.

So apparently Slash created all of Izzy's riffs, eh? It's 3 guitarists doing the work of 2, and I'm pretty sure that Bumblefoot can play ANYTHING that Slash or Izzy ever did individually (and hell, he might be able to play the stuff at the same time LOL). I mean honestly, how stupid can you be to assume that Bumblefoot or Buckethead couldn't handle Slash's parts? That's utterly ridiculous. I love Slash and think he got jobbed on that Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists list, but he's NOT so good that you should forget about Izzy's contributions back in the day. "Out Ta Get Me" is a perfect example. They had dueling guitars in that one (sounds awesome with headphones cuz you've got both channels dueling back and forth).

It's all about "star power". Slash was the #2 guy in the world's BIGGEST band. Bumblefoot may be able to play circles around Slash... but he was never #2 in the world's BIGGEST band... so, therefore, in the media's eyes- he's an inferior player to Slash. Plus, don't forget, the media tends to feel that Slash got a raw deal... so Bumblefoot and Finck will have to rip off instant orgasm producing riffs for the next 5 years to get the media and casual fan off of Slash's nuts.

Meanwhile, I think Fortus throws critics off. If he was just a standard GN'R rhythm guitarist like Izzy, Gilby or Huge... he probably wouldn't confuse the media into thinking 3 guys were brought in to replace Slash... but he gets to rip his fair share of solos (and rightly so)...

You forget one thing! Guitar isn't about circles, it is about music and sounding good. I don't say Bumblefoot is bad, because he is really good. But if you talk about the circles then I can talk about Slash's great sound, feel, playing etc. Guitar playing isn't about speed.

1,000% agree. Slash plays with tremendous feeling and emotion... of course he's usually always playing his OWN music... so I'm sure that helps...  :smoking:

The frustrating thing is who knows when we'll get the chance, if ever, to hear Bumblefoot playing his own music that he's written specifically for Guns N' Roses and to go along with Axl's vision... could be a few years off still...

Robin Finck does play with great feeling and emotion on the new stuff at least...

Billboard Review:

November 01, 2006,
Guns N' Roses Rocks, Infuriates In Jacksonville
Jeff Vrabel, Jacksonville, Fla.
Even on a sticky Halloween night in Florida, with much of the crowd in costume and spooky holiday decor swinging from the rafters, nothing could quite out-weird the main spectacle: watching 1/8th of Guns N' Roses perform a batch of 20-year-old smashes -- as well as a few from a record originally slated for release during the first Clinton administration -- in front of, among other things, a large and inflatable Homer Simpson balloon.

Welcome to the jungle, kids. We've got fun and games.

Or, more accurately, welcome to whatever this is. Well, what do you call this ragged Frankenstein's monster of a band these days: GNR of the 21st Century? Guns Minus Everyone But Axl? The GNR Experience Feat. Mr. Rose And His Band Of Merry Pranksters? Or, in a time when nostalgia rock is about the only safe bet, when Queen can tour without Freddie and half of the Who is one of the biggest games in town, is 2006 Guns N' Roses merely another case of Hardly Authentic But Good Enough?

Needless to say, one puts up with a lot in catching the remnants of GNR these days (to be fair, it's actually 1/4th of the classic lineup, if you count keyboardist Dizzy Reed). There's the wacky stage time (a classically Rose-ian midnight on a Tuesday), the wearying wait for an alleged new record and the small matter of all the Guns exiles who don't come around anymore.

But maybe the strangest thing is that for all its some-assembly-required vibe, Rose's band knows how to tear up an arena show. Sure, these are hired hands, and Slash would be pleased to know that Rose requires three guitarists to replace/recreate him: ex NIN-ster Robin Finck, now a dead ringer for Matisyahu; journeyman Richard Fortus; and, replacing Buckethead, Ron Thal, who goes by Bumblefoot. You can't make this stuff up. But these guys bring the noise.

Moreover, Rose, impossibly, frustratingly, remains as galvanizingly watchable a frontman as you're likely to find anywhere. The charisma? Enviably intact. The vocals? Strained, but often thrilling. The drive is back, too -- sometime between Guns' aborted 2002 run and today, Rose relocated his give-a-damn, and he prowls the stage with an intensity and ambition that sometimes outweighs his reach, but is crazy to witness. When he's on and his voice is doing age-defying triple salchows on "Welcome to the Jungle" and "It's So Easy," he's cornrowed lightning.

And for about half of the two-hour set, that's all you really need. Tracks like "Jungle," "Mr. Brownstone" and even "Live and Let Die" are meteor impacts -- so much so, in fact, that Rose adhered almost exclusively to songs from about 1987. This night, he was solely interested in the most glorious of the glory days, bringing out the big, boozy, misogynistic WMDs from "Appetite" ("Nightrain," "Out Ta Get Me," "My Michelle") -- and only invited songs from the "Use Your Illusion" discs that originated in the "Appetite" era, like "November Rain" and "You Could Be Mine." He's consciously blacking out a decent chunk of catalog here.

But all the grand setup leads into a weird payoff. Because after a massive opening salvo, reality begins to creep in with "Better," allegedly the first single from the new album (the expensive-looking Eastern backdrop indicated Rose remains apparently serious about this "Chinese Democracy" thing). Chunky riffs aside, "Better," charitably speaking, ain't no "Brownstone." And due to lots of things -- that inhospitable stage time (for which a smirking Rose denied credit), his penchant for vanishing from the stage for long stretches (though it added to his enigmatic legacy, one begins to wonder if he's really up to this) and pacing issues, the show begins to grow cold and distant, despite the valiant efforts of its frontman.

Oh, and this keeps coming up, too: Who the hell are these people?

Rose's minions are dressed like a ragtag pomo art outfit: keyboardist Chris Pittman's in an ivory-white suit, Tommy Stinson rocks plaid pants, and Bumblefoot has the name Bumblefoot. All have creative Tomorrowland haircuts (it was hard to tell what was a Halloween costume and what wasn't). But Rose has them faithfully recycle songs and solos as recorded by another guy 20 years ago. He takes great pains to project a vibe of forward-thinking, then consents to a jarring cameo by cornball Sebastian Bach, who in his opening set performs a song called "Love Is a Bitch Slap" to emphasize all you don't miss about buttless-chaps metal.

He adheres to a schedule of L.A. rock club ethics that doesn't so much apply in Jacksonville early in the week. And he grants all three guitarists interminable, momentum-killing solos; Fortus used his to jam on Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful," and you weren't sure what his intentions were, much like you're not sure what Rose's are.

Axl is capable of transcendent power: "Paradise City" seethed and roared, "You Could Be Mine" worked up a mighty head of steam and if there's a better way to open a rock show than with "Welcome to the Jungle," someone E-mail me about it. And Rose seemed to be alternately salivating at and resentful of the challenge of carrying this load on his shoulders.

But to what end? In the sense that anticipation is generally better than the experience (I'm looking at you, god-awful "Star Wars" prequels), the mystique of Rose's alleged "Democracy," if you're not bored of the entire episode in the first place, will spot-evaporate the day it's released. One wonders if Rose wouldn't be better served to leave it in the can until he's 60 and then bingo, it's "Smile."

In those glory days, Guns N' Roses was just about as good it got. But its hole card now is an album that might not exist, and once "Democracy" rises and falls, Guns N' Roses, which can now maintain a spooky sense of mystery, will be very likely trading the night train for the nostalgia train, whoever the hell's in it. But in the meantime, GNR still can rock your night, or early morning, with a primal power. Just bring a friend to help carry along the baggage.

Here is Guns N' Roses set list:

"Welcome To The Jungle"
"It's So Easy"
"Mr. Brownstone"
"Better"
Robin Finck solo
"Sweet Child O' Mine"
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door"
"You Could Be Mine"
Dizzy Reed solo
"The Blues"
Richard Fortus solo (includes "Beautiful")
"Out Ta Get Me"
"November Rain"
Bumblefoot solo (includes "Don't Cry")
"My Michelle" (with Sebastian Bach)
"Patience"

Regarding the billboard review- Yet another review from a critic with an axe to grind and has no clue. Chinese Democracy was to come out before 1996? It takes 3 guitarists to replicate Slash? This guy is not too bright, another one stuck in the past.

Here's a much better review from a local paper...

Guns N' Roses puts on good -- not great -- show

By ROGER BULL, The Times-Union

There is something about standing there at 1:30 in the morning, listening to yet another guitar solo but knowing you're not going to leave until you hear Paradise City. Yes, Guns N' Roses did make it to the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Tuesday night and put on a good -- but not great -- show.

All you needed was a little Patience.

It wasn?t the full, original band, of course. But Axl Rose was there, and that's who they came to see. They just had to wait until midnight to see him.

The whole delay thing started at the beginning. Though the concert was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., the doors didn't open until 7:30. So hundreds of people stood in line, listening to a monotonous recording telling them over and over that guns, knives and clubs were prohibited. The crowd was mostly in their 20s and 30s, but there were plenty several decades past that. Though fans had been encouraged to wear costumes on that Halloween night, not too many did.

There weren't more than 1,000 people in arena when 8 p.m. rolled around. Ticket sales had been slow but had reportedly picked up when prices had cut $13-$27. At 8:35, 35 minutes late, former Skid Row front man Sebastian Bach took the stage with his band. They played for a little more than an hour, a mix of Skid Row hits and some new songs.

Bach tried hard, you had to give him that. He still has his screaming pipes, and he went through all the requisite hair metal moves: Pumping his fist in the air, tossing his long blond hair and spinning the microphone. But the music just lay there flat like, well, old hair metal. Except when he played his bigger hits Monkey Business and Youth Gone Wild, he didn?t get the crowd very excited. Instead, he had to implore them to sing along, to jump up and down, even to applaud.

After Bach, there was a good 55-minute delay before Papa Roach came on. There didn't seem to be much work going on with the equipment. We just waited.

But when they did come on at 10:35, they got rocking right away with She Loves Me Not. The band was incredibly tight and energetic, all four fused into one solid beat. Vocalist Jacoby Shaddix even went out in the crowd on a couple of songs. More music, less posing and definitely a notch above Bach. They even got a mosh pit going on general admission floor.

By the time Papa Roach finished up with Last Resort, it was pushing 11:30. And it was midnight before Guns N' Roses came on. Keep in mind that if you were 18 when Appetite for Destruction came out in 1987, you are now 37 years old. And you may just have, you know, a job, a family. In fact, while most of the lower level was full by the time GNR took the stage, the crowd did thin during their two-hour set.

Axl and the guys (of which only keyboardist Dizzy Reed dates back to when they last produced an album) kicked it off right with Welcome to the Jungle. It was Axl Rose, all right. He's sporting a corn-row pony tail these days and he's a little heavier. He is, after all, 44. But the old moves are still there: the hop, the spin and the snake dance. He?s still energetic, running from one side of the stage to the other.

The voice, well, sometimes it sounded fine, especially on the shriek that sounds like nothing but him. Other times, it seemed to break and disappear completely and it was impossible to tell if it was him or the electronics that was failing. On the softer tunes like Patience and Knockin' on Heaven's Door, it's clearly a rougher, less agile voice than we remember.

At it's best, the concert was very good. It was, after all, Axl Rose up there singing some of the better songs in rock. And in the full two-hour set, he did just about all that you could ask for. At its worst, there were too many long guitar solos by guitarists are who not as good as Slash and who threw in too many silly theatrics. "Look, I can play my guitar when it's down by my ankles!"
When the band ended at 1:50 a.m., more of the crowd left, not waiting for the encore they knew would be Paradise City. The band came back quickly for its encore, and did a first-class version of a great rock 'n roll song.

Fireworks went off behind the stage, confetti blew out over the crowd that still remained on the floor.

That was worth waiting for.

I read that on Jacksonville.com yesterday. That is a lot more of an objectionable review, much more accurate than that billboard.com review.

I have to bitch about the security too cause in this day and age everyone is too politically correct, can't take a fuckin joke, and let's the power of security go to their head! That's bullshit about the costumes and the venue better have given those people their money back. But probably not because they will say it's their fault. Also, I go to a rock concert expecting to see people acting crazy - if you can't act crazy there, where can you? A mental ward but that will be my retirement home. Security is way out of hand at all events!!!! These people let a little power go to their heads and they think they can make or break someone's evening and laugh about it later. I'd like to see their asses get shut out of some thing they really want to see and paid good money for! Honestly, the whole thing has changed so much, it completely sucks! This whole country needs to smoke dope or take a pill. Chill the fuck out!

If you dress up as Slash to a GNR concert in 2006 you have to expect a hard time. We all know how Axl feels about Slash T shirts ( RIR 3).

Did anyone else notice the bra being thrown up on stage to Axl? Someone threw it to him from GA, and he slung it over his shoulder like it was a satchel. He walked over to Robin and wrapped the bra around his mic. Robin, Tommy, and Axl kept laughing about it for a good minute or two after.

It was even funnier watching Robin trying to figure out how to untangle it from his mic, whille still trying to play the material.

I did notice that.  That was some funny shit.

Some fans must give the band constant entertainment at the shows.
