Title: Down On The Street cover
Post by: 1987 on March 08, 2007, 11:23:34 PM
This is something I've put together over the years and it'll give you an idea of what's been recorded over the years:

http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/misc/recordingsessions.html

/jarmo

Down On The Street (The Stooges cover, recorded for "The Spaghetti Incident?") [unreleased] ..this was one of the songs listed on Jarmo's list.

does anyone have this? I didn't know that gnr ever covered this. Has it ever surfaced?

Three songs from the UYI/TSI? sessions do not circulate:

Down On The Street (Originally by The Stooges)
Waiting On My Ruca (Originally by Sublime)
Beer and a Cigarette (Originally by Hanoi Rocks)

Beer and a Cigarette (Originally by Hanoi Rocks)

Is there any confirmation for these two songs, because I never heard that they have been recorded in any session?

the only confirmation about the Hanoi Rocks tune I got is directly from Gilby. Spoke to him after a show in '00 and asked him about the songs that didn't reach TSI?! He didn't remember the title 'Down the Street', but remembered it was a Iggy Pop song... so, it's 'kinda' reliable... ;)

Waiting On My Ruca (Originally by Sublime)

Sorry but I really do not believe this.
Let me ask you: where did you get info about it?
Please give us the source for this info.
It makes no sense at all.

Apparently the Hanoi Rocks cover is a definite, but as for a sublime cover I doubt that very very much.

As for the Stooges - I always thought it was 'I wanna be your dog', not Down on the Street.

Gilby Clarke gave an interview in South Italy in 2002 when he said that he doesnt know where Hanoi Rocks cover is, or if it was ever used past production, as far as he is concerned it may have been removed so the Charles Manson song could go on lol

wow.. i guess there is more out there than i knew about.  the least the GNR camp could have done in the past 15 years was release a "lost Dogs" album.. these 3 songs.. and the old demos remastered.. maybe even throw in studio versions of Rhiad and silkworms since they aren't going to be on the album..    they wouldn't even have to make it a major release.. just throw it on Itunes.. obviously i want CD.. but i would have much rather seen a lost dogs album rather than a greatest hits...

Rhiad can still make it on Chinese Democracy.

rhiad will most likely be on CD... or one of the follow ups. i highly doubt they`d still have it on the setlist, if they weren`t going to release it at some point. it`s one of my favourite new songs by the way : ok:   it`s one of the songs with the most potential to be more exact.

Michael Monroe himself confirmed in his webpage some years ago that Gn'R recorded a version of Beer And A Cigarette for TSI? while he was answering a fan 'bout his relationship with Axl n' Gn'R (this was before the Osaka affaire in 2002...)

Q: Guns?N?Roses wanted to do some Hanoi songs for the punk covers album, do you know what songs?

M: Yeah, ?Beer And A Cigarette? but they thought Andy McCoy was too much of a prick to deserve the publishing money.

There's a lot of Gn'r n' Axl references in their responses to the fans n' also in their biography

"Waiting On My Ruca" was listed on gnrontour.com as an unreleased song. So, you'd have to talk to John M. about that one.

EDIT: Looks like he's since removed it. Probably some faulty info on his part.

A Sublime song makes no sense AT ALL.

And all I said was that John M. listed it on his site and has since removed it. I'm getting the impression that you people are jumping down my throat for mentioning it.

Why doesn't it make any sense though?

Is "Since I Don't Have You" a punk song?

i don't think it makes sense because to the best of my knowledge Sublime wasn't even a published band back in '91 or '93 (am i wrong?). which is when "TSI" was recorded.

I don't know/care about Sublime enough to answer that. I just know what I saw on gnrontour.com back in the day. (shrugs.)

Sublime played their first gig on July 4th 1988 so its entirely possible, their first album was released in 1992, on a small independant label. Since Axl obviously looked out for upcoming bands, especially those that mixed in a little hip hop, he would prob have found this. And "Waiting for My Ruca" was the first track on that debut album, so its not impossible for Axl or Duff etc to have known about it. In fairness, it would have been like looking into a crystal ball, charting the successes of the bands to come after them

That particular first album (40Oz. to Freedom) went to No 140 in the US Charts with a re-release in 1995 and was Double Platinum, so not a forgotten release by any standard.

"Waiting for My Ruca" however did appear on a tribute album in 2005 sung by AWOL One/Abstract Rude/Josh Fischel and Transducer

Since I don't Have You is an absolute classic song that has been re-recorded by dozens of musical groups. And Axl re-recorded because he liked the song and that is all there is to it!

Hanoi Rocks is one of the bands that influenced GNR a lot and that was mentioned several times in interviews by band members.

And so is the Stooges.

I have never heard anything GNR-Sublime related - that is why I don't believe it and that is why it doesn't make any sense to me.

I could see Axl coverin' Sublime. WFMR is a good song, IMO.

I dont think you should make comments like that on a Guns N' Roses fan thread, as to me, it implies that you believe Axl is a bad singer who ruins the songs he personally attempts to cover

I believe Almost Famous means that he thinks WFMR is a good song, and, that Axl would do a good job covering it.

what's that about?

Axl supposedly made Hanoi Rocks switch stages at Osaka to an indoor stage.
