I lean more towards the latter.

Why not have a poll? And post it in the polls section?  Doesn't do much good for everyone to post what their favorite song is without a tally - unless you like to read 5 pages of posts...just my suggestion.  This I Love for me.

Hard question to answer, having only had the album for a short time (and having heard various demos at various times), but I still think 'There Was a Time' comes out on top. I'll add some comments in individual song threads tomorrow, but so far I love how 'There Was a Time' sounds, all the great stuff was kept (like the final solo), and built around beautifully.

Also, 'Sorry' is currently racing up the charts! Love it.

No matter how hard I think about it, I can't choose for the life of me. Every single song on this album is incredible and has a resonance with me. It's going to be ages before I can even halfway compile my "rate the tracks best to worst" list.

Each song has a different effect on me, even the strange voice on Sorry (which is soooo cool) made me laugh, so that gave me the full range of emotions from one album. >in best 'announcer voice'<
"Well folks it looks like the initial show of force put on by TIL is running out of steam, allowing Sorry to steadily catch up...remaining solid to place 3rd is TWAT."

I am very surprised that Better is so far off the lead...also very surprising is the fact that Sorry is as strong as it is right now, I am going to have to listen more.  Not surprised that TIL is dropping off...I listened to it so many times, I think I may have burned myself out a bit - am actually leaning towards Better, now.

I absolutely love "Sorry".  I like the melodies.  When Axl switches to high vocals, it has such a cool quality to it.  Not sure how to describe it, but it's almost like Axl's singing the low parts, and then a second Axl in a nearby room (but a little further away) is singing the high parts.  And then the Sabbath-esque riffs kick in during the chorus (but it's still not doom metal, Sebastian  :P).  And then that solo...oh, sweet Lord, that solo.  Not the fanciest thing I've ever heard, but atmospheric, soaring, graceful, and just perfect for the song.

It's really just a great song.

I agree, well, almost.

Sorry just slightly over Better, Scraped, and This I Love. (Shackler's is really growing on me and then there's the rest of ALL the remaining songs).

Better may have been my favorite.  I probably would have floated away with goosebumps when Better came on 3 songs in had I not heard it before.

There's so little distance between songs 1 & 14 on my list.  Even Riad grows on me each time I hear it.

I give up actually trying to rate them.  Each and every song has a life to it separate from each and every other song on this album.  Its just plain crazy.  Unimaginable.  Mind blowing.  I just can't talk about it anymore.  After each song finishes, each time, I look at my wife and my eyes are popping out of my head in wonderment.

FUCKING AMAZING I tell ya!!!

It's damn near impossible to choose one. I started out with There Was A Time though, but since then it's changed almost daily. However, I've managed to narrow it down to a current top 5, in no particular order:

There Was A Time
Catcher In The Rye
This I Love
IRS
Street Of Dreams

(Plus Better and Madagascar :P)

EDIT:

By the way, I find it really strange that IRS is the least popular song in this poll. That song is pure brilliance. Easily the best rocker on the album, if not the best song.

My vote went to "There Was A Time" . I just loved that track. Classic guitar driven track. I would have gave the vote to "Catcher in the Rye" had Axl kept the demo version. But he went with that version and I feel T.W.A.T edged it.

Love all the songs but right now I'm really diggin   "Street of Dreams"

Probably the most underrated song on the album along with Riad and IRS.
The melody and lyrics are some of the best I've heard. It was the first song that totally blew me away and got me very emotional while listening to Chinese Democracy for the first time. Epic piece for sure.

EDIT: For clarity's sake, when I say underrated, I'm talking about on this forum : ok:

nice to see axl thanking you Jarmo. He thanks Kimi Raikkonen too!!! (but no merck :hihi:)

Who is that?

1st is Sorry followed close by This I Love they both just blow me away,  Scraped is fast becoming a favorite also. Shackler's is the one though that gets stuck in my head, all day in my head it'll be "I don't believe there's a reason I don't believe it" over and over.

Hard to pick a favorite as with every Gunners album.
'This I Love' is definitely the most beautiful song on the album, 'Better' rocks hard, 'Madagascar is the most philosophical one. 'Catcher' and 'Sorry' are very cool too.
Okay if I had to pick a top 3 it would be:

1- This I love
2- Better
3- Madagascar

 8)

nice to see axl thanking you Jarmo. He thanks Kimi Raikkonen too!!! (but no merck :hihi:)

Who is that?

Ferrari F1 driver from Finland. Stubborn and overwhelmingly talented, not-kissing-anybody's-ass kind of guy. A rare breed in F1 genre. A bit like one renowned singer of this certain band.

Here is an examle of Kimi's behaviour and attitude
(Pele was presenting an award to honoured athlete, this time for Michael Schumacher, 7 time winner of F1 championship; Kimi did not take the ceremony too seriously)

After a bunch of spins I'm finally saying Catcher in the Rye is the one that has become my personal fav.

Love the intro
Song style is a little different for Axl's voice (cool thing)
Chord changes and sections move very well with the subject matter
Subject matter mirrors perceptions about him (recluse i.e Salinger : "mentally unstable" i.e.Caulfield) - Perception is 99% of reality
The fact it's about Lennon seals the deal, greatest singer/songwriter in rock history...period.

At the moment, I'm really into "Riad...", but my favourite tends to change with each listen. I have to admit that there were a few songs on the album that I didn't "get" right away - "Prostitute" being one - but over the last few weeks it's grown on me immensely. I'd go as far as to say that there are no poor tracks on the album at all. I'm not just saying that because I'm a fan, but because it's true.

^Thats what I love about this album.

Its one of the few albums where everyone reacts differently at first to some songs, then on each listen, often change again.

At first I did not like Riad at all. I thought it was misplaced on an album of classics, then a month later, I suddenly loved it.

With the album being so amazing, it's easy for your favourite to change constantly. But the one that really stands out to me at the moment is This I Love. The piano, string arrangements, axl's voice and then Robin's beautiful guitar solo really makes this song epic. I also love Better and how addictive it is, the first time I heard that I knew it was going to be a fan favourite. So them two songs really stand out to me but as I said this can change so easily when every song on the album is a hit.

Right, I've changed my vote to "Can't say"... as I really can't say. "Prostitute", "Madagascar", "This I Love" and "If The World" are currently fighting for the top spot... but I have no doubt that will change next week... in fact I now have a hankering for "IRS".

I really can?t decide on this one. I think Chinese Democracy is the best Guns n?Roses album and in my top3 overall. This album is very addictive and full of the best songs ever. If I would vote, I would choose between Shackler?s Revenge, Better, TWAT, Sorry, I.R.S., Madagascar and Prostitute. Mission impossible  ;D

For the best rocker I would pick Chinese democracy
but the most mainstream song I would say Sorry.

They both are recorded very well and sound very great.

I would've picked SOD if it wasn't to recorded soundy (Meaning Live it sounds a 100% better then studio)
A well mixed live version (Rock am Ring) (pittsburg) would be a great single

This song is just fucking perfect, from the intro to the closer.
Everything sounds top notch n also has a really modern feeling.
It has to be the perfect new gn'r song.

I just thought I'd point out how even after a few months, my favourite song on Chinese Democracy is still This I Love. It will be interesting to see how many more peoples favourites have stayed the same, even after a few months.

This I Love just rocks in every way, and Robins' solo is just out of this world. This song had alot to live up to with all the hype, and I really do feel as if it's exceded peoples expectations.

I'm also glad this song seems like it's a staple in GN'Rs current set, people need to hear this masterpiece.  : ok:

1. Chinese Democracy: Great, in-your-face rocker, makes for a great start to the album. Mean vocals, great riff, icredible solos, and nice fretless work from Bumblefoot. Lyrics could be a bit better, but all round a great song. 9/10

2. Shackler's Revenge: Short and sweet. Guitar intro is a little off sounding, but the song itself can't be faulted. Very catchy, straight to the point, good lyrics. Not too keen on bumble's solo however.... 8/10

3. Better. All round great, first of the album's many classics. Catchy riff, great lyrics, brilliant solo by robin, and heavy as fuck. Why this wasn't promoted more or given moe attention is beyond me, it's a true modern GN'R classic 10/10

4. Street of Dreams: Very UYI- sounding song. Dizzy and Robin both shine here. Great lyrics from Axl, though the vocals are a little weak at times. One of the more 'instant' songs on the album, IMO. 8/10

5. If The World: One of the most experimental tracks GN'R have done here. Bucket's skill at different styles of guitar come into focus here. Very catchy song, the solo is fantastic. Structurally, a relatively straightforward number, however the depth of the song is impressive. 8/10

6. There Was A Time: Staggering. Easily the best thing on the album here. Epic in every sense of the word. Axl?s lyrics are heartfelt, and powerful. The guitar work amazing. Any doubts as to whether Robin or Bucket were right to fill Slash?s shoes are put to rest here. Robin?s solo is amazing, then along comes Bucket and follows it up with something even more epic. The song is heavy as hell. Brain?s drumming is thunderous, the band is on fire. 10+/10

7. Catcher In The Rye: A great piano ballad, showing the more harmonious side of the band more. Bumblefoot shows he is more than just a shredder guitarist with an impressive solo, better than Brian?s on the demo version, IMO. Great lyrics, piano work, a great song to chill to, and rounds off the first half of the album with style. 10/10

8. Scraped: One of the more industrial numbers. The layers of vocal harmonies at the start are pretty bad, it just doesn?t seem to fit, (IMO of course..). The song itself, when it kicks in, is solid though (despite later returns of the multi-layered vocals of the intro). Uplifting lyrics, cool solo?s and a mean rhythm section holding it all together. Lyrics are great to motivate yourself and as a big ?fuck you? to any haters or doubters. 7/10

9. Riad N? The Bedouins: A strange number. Cool, atmospheric, if slightly long intro. The main riff is beastly, and Tommy?s bass groove is unforgettable, one of the songs where he really gets to shine. The lyrics are strange and nonsensical, but Axl?s delivery is good, reaching some of his highest notes on the album. A solid, instant, catchy number. 8/10

10. Sorry: Haunting, moody, atmospheric, strange. Lots of words can describe this song. The best ones are simply that it kicks arse. There is an eerie ambiance to the song. Bucket?s solo is hauntingly memorable. A great set of lyrics, sort of a more mature version of 'Get In The Ring'. Unforgettable choruses, heavy and thunderous guitars. One of the best of the album. 10/10

11. I.R.S.:  solid, punchy number. It grows with time. More of an industrial feel, but sleazed up a lot credit to Bumblefoot. The lyrics are mean and aggressive, the last verse is venomous, topped off with an incredible scream from Axl, backed by a shredding, skilful solo from Buckethead. Solid and powerful. 9/10

12. Madagascar:  Along with 'If The World', probably the most experimental song on the album. Gloomfull, scene-setting French horns introduce the song, followed by Axl?s lyrics of forgiveness, sorrow and despair. A solid solo from Buckethead underplays the montage of quotes and speeches memorably. The drumming is great here. Simple, but unforgettable. 10/10

13. This I Love: Axl's masterpiece. The darker, evil sister of Street Of Dreams and Sweet Child O' Mine. Axl's capabilities on Piano are demonstrated wonderfully here. Passionate, deep lyrics, and Robin's amazing solo overplays an incredible instrumental part. These two minutes alone are two of the finest on the whole album. Axl?s screaming of the final chorus towards the end, and the final verse are some of the finest performances he?s ever given. The song is, put simply, incredible. 10/10

14. Prostitute: IMO, the most underrated song on the album. The lyrics seem to deal with a range of topics. They're a message to the fans, his naysayers, former lovers and band-mates all at once, but all in different ways. The whole band comes through to shine here. Heavy as sin, and epic as hell. The final two minutes fade the album out beautifully. Someone once described listening to the ending as imagining Axl walking down a long, long corridor, finally leaving through the exit at the end, forever. A pretty accurate description. If this was the final bit of studio work to come from Guns, this would be the best ending we could have wished for. Just behind 'There Was A Time' for best song on the album. 10/10

Overall album revew: 10/10

Madagascar. The lyrics really got to me the first time I heard it.

Forgive them that tear down my soul
And bless them that they might grow old
And free them so that they may know
That it's never too late

That and Axl's voice had quite an effect on me.

There was a Time is my favorite on the album, such a great great powerful song. the guitar solo's are amazing. and Axl vocals are killer. espically at the "i would do anything for you" parts.

next to that Prostitute is another one of my favorites. it gets me so pumped up for whatever comes next with the band's new music. like the calm before the storm moment.

At the moment, I'm really liking Chinese Democracy (the song), the music, the message, Axl's vocals.

It probably has become my favourite GN'R song ever at this point, I just love the feel of it.

And my favourite part of the track is Robins' and Bucketheads' dueling guitar trade off. That solo is just amazing, Robins' fantastic sharp and high notes. And then Buckets fast fretwork, and also harmonicly high notes, all make this superb.  ;D

I'd say I.R.S. is my favorite. Maybe it's b/c it was the first song I heard out of some leaks in '06 or whatever and I was just thinking "Wow it's nice to hear Axl."  It's a real ass-kicker.  Vocals have edge and attitude, then sail into the stratosphere.  Really showcases vintage Axl grittiness and paranoia (Gonna call the preeezident, gonna call a private eye..).  Axl's never done that song justice live; I think the studio mix could be better and Finck's solo is mostly garbage. But vocally and lyrically, it's the best for me.

After that, I say This I Love, Madagascar, Prostitute

I chose I.R.S. because it was the first leak I heard and because I think it can easily stand beside anything on AFD.  TWAT and Street of Dreams are both great but I think earlier versions were even better.  It was nice to see thatI'm not the only If the World fan. Even though Rhiad wasn't too great on CD I did hear a live version that totally rocked.  I actually believe the first half of the song is still strong it just falls apart in the second half.

Prostitute would be my #1.. what an incredible song, too bad it's hardly ever played live..  the ending outro is incredible, sometimes i play it back over again..

honorable mentions would be Better, just a rockin song, never gets old even after the leak.  Sorry is really starting to grow on me, TWAT is incredible also.

I'm not sure why I can't get into TIL, I always skip over that one..

"Prostitute" absolutely floors me everytime I hear it. I have no problem at all saying IMHO that it's the greatest Guns N' Roses track ever released (new or old)- and I LOVED the original band as well. To me it's all the power of "Estranged" (my 2nd favorite all-time Guns song) - just more streamlined and impactful. Incredible, incredible track.

Lots of other great songs on CD too- including "This I Love" (which makes for an all-time classic album outro double with "Prostitute"), "Rhiad" (Rolling Stone's: "Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti remixed by Trent Reznor" line fits best here IMHO) and "Better" (classic Guns' pop meets sonic attitude).

Man I'm always roaming these boards really need to post more regularly but played Chinese Democracy through a few times a few days back and I'm still undecided on what tune is the best.  Probably be easier if I joined those decider threads elsewhere eliminating those I like least first but sure as always would list at least 3/4 of the album as my must listens.  Reading between the lines then it's fair to say nothing to skip here the man is a songwriting genuis no question!

For the first time in many a year I am actually quietly anxious at the prospect of a certain album release... that of course being the next Guns record, here's hoping it gets done and delivered much sooner than later.

Agreed, the whole song is building up to that part.

very interesting to see the results of this poll because when I listen to the album from start to finish i only skip over sorry and this i love (actually switch to prostitute when the quotes section of madagascar starts.)  but in this poll sorry and this i love are the highest rated lol.

i feel like the song builds incredibly and gains so much momentum and then completely loses momentum at that part.  i lose interest completely.  i'd rather hear axl singing another verse.

Voted for there was a time, however, the outro to prostitute is the most moving piece of I have heard, it's beautiful and I could not envisage a more fitting end to the album

They are all fantastic, TWAT is the highlight for me.

It's disapointing to see Riad the lowest, but I love that track a lot

I voted for This I Love in this poll, but Chinese Democracy has since become my overall favourite over time. Maybe it's because of the awesome intro at live shows, maybe it's because of the amazing duel guitar solo from Finck and Bucket. Or it might just be because of the powerful message behind the song, but I love it to bits. Just as that guitar solo kicks in, and you see that Chinese baby face screaming on the screens (which I'm getting as a tattoo BTW), you can just feel the pain and oppression of the Chinese people.

This may be a silly question but I'm new so please be gentle.  :nervous:  At the beginning of Chinese Democracy there are lots of voices, presumably speaking Chinese etc - is that Axl's voice also among them?

I don't believe so.  In fact I'm quite sure that would be a NO.  Somewhere, someone translated what was said in that intro.  Don't have a link though.

It was chinese voices conspiring against the government, and a few years ago someone did indeed translate it... wish I could find the post, but it was a while ago.  :-\

I agree the album is just great.I realize people wanted new music or an album almost immediately after Chinese, but I think another album release to close to Chinese might have been distracting, and maybe someone like myself might have just moved on to quick from Chinese, because for me it just didn't hook me right away.IMO its time that slowly reveals the brillance of the album.

My favourite ChiDem song is probably Prostitute. I think it builds awesomely and the lyrics obviously have a lot of meaning to them. I wish they would play it live but it does seem like it would be a nightmare to pull off.

Just to get back to the pure, "next album speculation"

I just did the, whats your favorite track on CD, thread.   It also posts the results of the leading songs.   The leaders are Sorry and TWAT.  And not just leading by a little bit, but kicking ass.  The album has been out for a long time now, so I think we can say those are the two most popular songs..

So I would say, if Axl wants the next album to be successful as possible, if I was him I would look at those two songs and base the next album off them and in the same sound and style..

I for one love those two songs, so will be one happy Baconman, if this happens

Not me, I think the guitar work is fantastic and I love Axls voice.   Its easy to listen too..

For me I was surprised Shacklers was so low..  That was my fav track when the album came out.  I guess its just a little to much for some people

Wonder if there was general poll for favorite GNR song of all time, what would be number 1?

I would think Sweet Child would be number 1.  Its there biggest selling song of all time, so I guess that is winning a poll there.

It is def not my fav song of all time though and I would hate for the style of the new album to in away sound like that.  Guess I have just heard it so many times, not that it is a bad song.

I would however like to hear the next album to sound like those mentioned songs I listed above, mixed in with some killer guitar funk songs..  Songs that make you move your hips and a fun to screw too.   Something along the groove that rocket queen has, for example...

Just for the record, I don't have an all time fav Guns song, it changes all the time.
