Title: NEW Greatest Hits to be launched?
Post by: Manets on March 01, 2010, 06:51:36 PM
Rede Globo (TV Channel) is showing a commercial about "GUNS N' ROSES NEWEST CD",  in the promo they say it's a new Greatest Hits, different from the 2004 edition. They showed some unseen pro-shot!

Sounds official. The tour in Brazil starts on sunday, maybe they'll launch the CD together!

User John Bonham posted this in the other forum:

He said is the artwork of the 2006 unlaunched Greatest Hits.

I didn't see, but a guy on a brazilian forum said that in part of the cover it's written "ALL THE SUCCES THAT ARE BEING PLAYED ON THIS TOUR!"

I think these covers are indeed real.

If I remember correctly these were surfacing in 2006 as said before. The source was a professional company designing covers/booklets.

It was just a collection of their most known songs.

Ill buy anything with GN'R's name on it, but there has already been the absolute perfect greatest hits package that no one is talking about..it's called 'Live Era".  Although I wish Civil War was on it.

To be honest, im not sure if id buy a greatest hits CD unless there was some cool extra's or a new track etc.  i have all the albums already.  :)

but if they did release one, i think they should choose 15 off of AFD and UYI's.  1 off Lies (Patience), 1 from Spaghetti Incident, 2 from CD, and one new track.  (Assuming they have one).

As for people saying the Current members should re-record all the old tracks for it, that would be a terrible idea!  Axl is currently winning over more fan's so why go and alienate them people and  try erase the legacy of the old band?  not to mention it would take time to record all them songs again thus delaying future endheavours.

Civil War probably wasn't on it because most of the intro's to it contained 'Voodoo Child' which may have needed clearance or whatever.

My question is...why did the foreign copies of Live Era get to have an addition song (Coma) but the US version just didn't have it?  What's the point of doing that?

it would be cool to get the current members to re-record some tracks for GH cd, the current line up have put out CDem, theyre touring and doing great so why release a 2nd GH which would be 90% old Guns. we already have a GH and dont really need another one unless it was re-recorded with the current members. i dont think its about erasing a legacy etc

The US vinyl also has Coma.  I don't know the point.  Japan had some commerical release of some of the live Marquee stuff too.

i agree with you that there really isnt any point in a Greatest hits album.  Hardcore fan's already own all the albums and casual fan's probably either have live era or the current Greatest Hits.

I think the current members re-recording would just get a load of negative media and the band could do without all that right now.
I doubt even think the current members would be too comfortable re recording the old stuff.

Live Era was pretty badass.  It didn't "sell shit" because of the same reason Chinese Democracy didn't "sell shit"...the promotions sucked ass.  The Greatest Hits cd was pointless to a fan like myself...but went platinum several times over for other reasons.

Live Era was great though.  Get your head out of the toilet.

I love Live Era but i would have preferred more of the performances from 80s, i think most were from the UYI tour.

And i would have loved Double Talkin Jive on it.  (The studio version is nothing special).

I agree, I think there are only a couple of performances from the 80s, only Out ta get me comes to mind.  I wasn't a fan of the reworked vocals either, would have loved to get the 100% true blue on the whole album.

I think if they do release new GH and it is more of the "best of" ilk with less covers from TSI and more deep track favorites like Rocket Queen, it would be fine since more casual fans would be exposed to those songs.

I agree to a certain extent.  The rework on "Knockin On Heaven's Door" with the added (or crystal clear) crowd getting involved makes it sound so incredible.  That particular version, I believe, was taken from Wembley Stadium at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.  If you listen to the actual video recorded version of the song...and the one on Live Era...they're eerily similar...only the crowd is much clearer (or added) in the Live Era version.  I'm ok with that I guess...especially when I'm playing it for friends...they especially love it.   :hihi:

From my ears, I think those vocals were cleaned up rather than re-recorded. Not everything was re-recorded on the album.  I think Paradise City was left alone too for the most part. There are songs where it is kind of half and half too.

My question is...why did the foreign copies of Live Era get to have an addition song (Coma) but the US version just didn't have it?  What's the point of doing that?

Japan always gets these bonus tracks. They could get the records cheaper by ordering them straight from the US, so extra tracks are added to Japanese editions to entice people to buy the records from local stores and not from abroad.

Interesting. For whatever reason, I never thought of that.  Makes perfect sense though.  The value of the dollar is borderline worthless these days.  Must be nice to live in Europe or Asia and vacation to the United States for next to nothing. haha

Funny thing:  I have a version where the disks are switched (the disk labels, themselves).  Disk one is labeled as disk 2, and disk 2 is labeled as disk 1.

the problem with Live Era is that it is not a good representation of a real Gnr concert. I went to 7 UYI shows and in my opinion, Live Era was not close to the quality of the shows I saw. It was a patchwork effort that was thrown together in order to put some Gnr product on the shelves until a new proper studio LP was finished.

You're missing the point.

The purpose of a 'Greatest Hits' compilation is a collection of a band's greatest hits, as in most successfull singles.

While a great album, there are, as of yet, ZERO 'hits' on Chinese Democracy.

Yes, but there is a difference between a "Greatest Hits" set and a "Best Of".  Clearly, the rumored tracklist originally seen was not a compilation of greatest hits.  If that would still be the case, that it would be a "Best Of", not a "Greatest Hits", then Buddha_Master has a valid point that Chinese Democracy could or should be included in the "Best Of" set.

also, "hits" can be defined in many ways.  sure, one way is to look at sales.  another is artistic accomplishment.  and influence on other artists.  and fan appreciation.  i'm sure that if certain people could get over their obession with the 80's, they'd see that, on the whole, chinese democracy is a monumental hit in the career of guns n' roses.

The inherent difference between a 'best of' and a 'greatest hits' compilation was my whole point.

There is only one definition of a 'hit', and that is a successfull single.

For example, 'Nightrain' was never a hit.  Neither was 'Estranged'.  Neither were 'Chinese Democracy' or 'Better'.  'Jungle' was.

Yes, if a GNR 'best of' were released one day, Chinese Democracy songs could be included. (Bandname discussions aside)

Chinese Democracy as a 'monumental hit' though ?  I don't think so.

from what I remember both Axl and Slash worked on "Live Era", although  not together in the same place.  It wasnt just thrown together by the label without band input like GH was...alot of work went into song selection and the artwork of the record.  I remember Axl talking about it with kurt loder in 1999 as it being a "farewell to the old Guns."

some old daddy once asked me for a best-of GN'R CD to compile for him......very hard to do cause too subjective.
i gave him a sealed AFD.

Right on the money, a 'best of' is purely subjective.

Am I right to presume that you, Limulus, would include at least a few UYI tracks ?

I definitely would.

yeah, off course...."right next door to hell", "coma" and "civil war" would have to be on there at least IMO. i would also include "if the world". but its just too subjective project. most people might dislike "bad apples" but for some others its the greatest song in the world. never been a fan from "best of"/"greatest hits" packages, and exspecially for Guns.....its not that they have about 15-20 albums like Mot?rhead, Maiden or even more like Beatles, Stones. i just dont see the point and am full behind the Slash, Axl, Duff-suing against that release 2004.

i've also never liked the "Fake Era" 2cd-release for being marketed as a live album. but seeing it as being a rare vocal project from Axl's "lost years"....it can be heard. why such a great Live band like GN'R never released a real live album and rarely official released any live stuff at all is just beyond me....and they do have all those Proshots and Soundboards rotting in their vaults.

I completely agree that a 'greatest hits' for a band with only (at the time) 3 full albums of original material is a bit far-fetched.  Then again, I work in a record store, and I get a lot of customers who seem to like the idea of getting all the well known songs on one cd.  And I understand that too.  Not everyone needs the whole back catalogue of any particular band, even if they only have 3 albums.  So it works both ways I guess.

Live Era had it's good points as well.  It's great to have SBD recordings from shows like the Ritz '91 ('Dust n' Bones') or the Budokan '88 ('You're Crazy' and 'Used to Lover Her').  Hell, we even got 'Coma' !  Then again, I didn't like the fact that they repeated a lot of stuff from Tokyo '92 and some previously released B-sides.  The fact that it spans their entire live career is a good idea, but they should have used more different shows.

I'm not sure what to think of the whole 're-recorded vocals' discussions, so I'll stay out of that.

In all, it could have been better, but at least we got something  ;) !

well, "live era" is supposed to be a compilation reflecting the band live from 1987-1993, right?
in this case it fails because of
a) not being live at all
b) not being a reflection from those different eras at all

instrumentally hard to judge not knowing where the parts are from directly but you can hear Axl's late 90s voice often there.

It would be idiotic to release a greatest hits album without Chinese Democracy songs on it. The entire fucking album is some of GNR's greatest.

Ali

also, "hits" can be defined in many ways.  sure, one way is to look at sales.  another is artistic accomplishment.  and influence on other artists.  and fan appreciation.  i'm sure that if certain people could get over their obession with the 80's, they'd see that, on the whole, chinese democracy is a monumental hit in the career of guns n' roses.

Estranged is a hit! to me its simple, if u wanna do a greatest hits of a band, U gotta put every song in it that had a video... welcome to the jungle, dont cry, november rain, garden of eden, estranged, since i dont have you, etc etc etc.

If u want a best of, then and only then u put the hit songs, the fan favorites and the most recognized ones

It's a stupid idea to release a greatest hits album now. Geffen / Interscope should focus on the promotion of the Chinese Democracy album and tour.
I can see why most of the songs on the setlist were chosen but the order is terrible. Really doesn't feel right!

Not all the tracks ordered were bad.
Actually I think in the middle of the album is where there is the best order!

Yes and No.

Yes all the songs were originaly played and recorded live.  No in that much of Axl's vocals were re-recorded in the studio.  I am not certain on the amount of instruments that were reworked in the studio, if any.

Plus there are only a few songs that were performed in the 80s, with the rest of it coming from Illusion era performances.

I love it though and listen to it more than the studio releases.

Theres something about the way Live Era was produced that left some of the songs sounding a bit flat and never captured the energy of the live performance. But theres the odd song, like Your Crazy for example, that sounds raw and badass as hell that makes it worthwhile. Not a fan of the rerecorded vocals, apart from the last verse of Used To Love Her which actually works really well. It was worth buying it for Its Alright alone, I'd never heard it before and thought it was gorgeous  :)

we all own most GnR material  and we all have access to a Pc for sure because were all on here, so if we want a greatest hits CD then surely we can just burn our own and put on whatever tracks we want in whatever order we choose. i know ive done several over the years for the car and stuff
from a die hards point of view there is really no need for another greatest fucking hits IMO  : ok:
