That's a good idea... I'll try to gather stuff from here, and from my personal links. Additions will follow.

I'll get to this on sunday, if that's okay with people, when I have more time and a decent connection...

i have some questions for you knowledgable people....what exactly is a scale, why is it needed? whats its purpose, and whats the difference between a scale and chords

Title: Re:help starting on guitar
Post by: Pviljoen on September 07, 2003, 01:48:53 AM
A scale is a series of notes in sets of 8 that starts and ends on the tonic, which determines the key, and thereby the accidentals and notes in between the tonics (first notes of the scale).

A chord is a few notes from a scale. Usually, the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes in the scale. Most solos are based around a scale. They are also useful for knowing the fretboard inside and out, so you dont have to think where your fingers are going next.

whats a good scale to start with?

which one is easiest, hardest etc?

which one does slash like to base his solos from?

Start with a C major scale.

The hardest scales involve many accidentals (sharps/flats)

Sash uses Pentatonic (blues) scales.

Actually a standard pentatonic (rather than a blues pentatonic) is really easy.

Try....

E  -----------------------0-3
B -------------------0-3----
G --------------0-2---------
D ----------0-2------------
A -----0-2-------------------
E 0-3------------------------

its been mentioned before but i like the powertabs site.
http://www.powertabs.net

you need to download a program to use the files but the program makes them really easy to read and even easier when you print them off.

it plays them too!

i've used that since i started.

mmm... i remember you (Skid Row) is finally there

Title: Re:help starting on guitar
Post by: Oddy on October 20, 2003, 08:59:53 AM
well even though i don't have a guitar and have only ever had 3 weeks of experience i can tell you the most valuable thing i learnt. A simple blues scale that is movable up and down the fret board, with the note u start it on being the key, such as blues scale in A is starting the pattern at the 5th fret, blues scale in E at the 12th fret etc. Here it is in the key of A

E:----------------------------------------------------------5---8--------
B:-------------------------------------------------5---8-----------------
G:-----------------------------------5---7---8--------------------------
D:--------------------------5---7---------------------------------------
A:-------------5---6---7-----------------------------------------------
E:----5---8-------------------------------------------------------------

I hope that makes some sense, i think i have it right. There's tonnes of blues scales but this one is good because its movable, so you can improvise anywhere, just remember the root note (in this case A on the 6th string). God I can't wait to get my own guitar.

ps: why is it that my pic refuses to show?

Dude,

For the best wat to learn is by ear.  Don't look at a lot of tabs.  Devolping your ear to know chords and notes is frustrating, but once you get it down you can learn almost anything and you fell a real since of accomplishment.  Listen to lots of Slash and Pages stuff for devolping GNR style.  My ear has just recently come around and I am crusing now its alot easier.  Also I listen to a little Steive Ray Vaughn, his stuff will help you devople crazy skills.

Later,

yeah i also just found an electric guitar in my basement and have started screwin around, and i printed some GNR Riffs, and yeah, can somoene please tell me what the fuck the numbers on the guitar tabs mean please? :nervous:

Title: Re:help starting on guitar
Post by: Miz on February 14, 2004, 08:51:17 AM
The numbers indicate the fret, while the six lines each represent a string on the geetar.   The top line is the top e string (the thinnest one) and the bottom line is the bottom e (thickest one).

I'm not entirely sure that learning by ear is the only way to go.  I mean, yes it lets you develop great skills for transcribing stuff yourself and recognising patterns, chords, notes etc.. but it doesn't really give you a huge chance to develop your technique.  I mean, look at classical musicians, how many concert pianists learnt just by ear? Or how many people in an orchestra...any orchestra?  My guess would be about none, and it probably wouldn't be too far from the truth.

I'm not saying only read tabs, or sheet music, but I do think it's important to get a good balance.

Title: Re:help starting on guitar
Post by: AdZ on February 15, 2004, 02:21:59 PM
I think learning by tab first and then developing your ear later on is a good way, but each person finds there one way I guess...

Title: Re:help starting on guitar

well i've been playing since half way through november..............1...2.....3.........basically 3 and a bit months and all i can say while the method u choose to practice is pretty important, the ammount that you practice especially during those 1st times is crucial.

all i can say is practice practice.........and dont stop........think of the guitar as ur enemy........sitting there.......laughing at u cuz u can't do a certain lick or something..............are you just gonna sit there and let it laugh at you..........no you play it like a bitch and make it whine. Thats my philosophy, i play guitar as much as i can, i might miss a day but its no big deal it doesnt matter. Sometimes i might play 6 hours a day sometimes it might be 20mins.

im really developing a bad habit. Being the nocturnal person that i am, i've begun having night time practice sessions from like 2am to 7am everyday these past couple of weeks, i gotta stop that and change that to some time during the day cuz its not healthy.

another thing, yes when i 1st started i learnt so many songs (well tried to) before i learnt any musical theory or exercises etc. I rarely learn songs now, instead i learn technique, theory, scales, chords something new everday. Because once you do that its much better. Im finding myself able to create my own solos to songs (hotel california for example) just because i know the chords.....know the notes and which notes to use in the solos etc.

thats one thing, another thing is being able to play whats in your head exactly. When you can do that perfectly you're only limited by your imagination. So just say your humming a tune, try playing it on guitar, it may take a while, but its training your ear and letting you play off the top of your head.

thats just my ideas for learning, evry1's different but.

yeah thats enough from me, ahhh such a long post that nobody will read. Ah well 10 yrs time and maybe i will actually be a kick ass guitarist where pp will read wat i have to say.

Title: Re:Word of Advice
Post by: Miz on February 26, 2004, 06:41:17 PM
It's and amplifier which uses vacuum tubes (or valves depending on what country you're in...) to amplify the guitar signal, as opposed to transistors.

Title: Re:Word of Advice
Post by: EVH on February 26, 2004, 07:05:35 PM
so that makes it sound better?

Title: Re:Word of Advice
Post by: Miz on February 26, 2004, 07:12:04 PM
Quite simply, yes.  The effect isn't as pronounced when it's clean, or when it's really quiet, but when you start to saturate the tubes, and send them into non-linear amplification, then the difference really becomes noticable.

Don't know much about them.  I didn't think they were that big on guitar amps, I thought they were more geared towards PA stuff.  But, i've never heard anything bad about them, but again, i've never heard anything good about them...I've never really heard anything about them.  The cabs are supposed to be ok, but nothing special.

I bought a pretty nice used Crate Stealth-50 amp awhile back, which is a tube amp.  My old amp was just a tiny Crate practice amp, so it wasn't that great of a comparison anyway, but the Stealth-50 defiinitely sounds a whole lot better.  It's like a different class of distortion.

The only thing that's weird is that it takes a minute or two to heat up before I can start using it.

Yes, because if you don't have enough money to buy a good all tube amp, you shouldn't buy anything. Hell I don't think one should even be allowed to play.
The truth is, that of course the all tube systems sound better. They soudn warmer and more rich, than any solid state device ever will.

But I - for one - do not have enough money to buy a good tube amp. Plus, I live in an apartment building, which means I can't play loud at home. And as you know, tubes don't sound half as good when played on low volume levels. So, what I did, was that I bought an amp modelling system that I can hook up to my computer via USB if I want to, and it sounds a lot better than any of the solid state amps (at least with the tones I'm playing with) that I've tried.

But for me... It really was about value for money, in which case the tube amps just weren't an option.

But some people who have money to burn still waste it on Line 6, Randall, or something like a Marshall Mode Four.  Now if all you want is pure distortion and scopped mids, then thats fine, but you know, if you want real tone...

But I completely agree with you, if you got no money (like me) then it's not feasible to buy tubes, and also, unless you've got either a soundproof room, or an extra ?200 to spend on a power soak then it's totally impractical as well.

It's not wierd exactly, it's just the way they work.  But you should actually leave them for about 20 mins or so on standby before you start playing, because it can seriously shorten the length of the tubes life by pushing when it hasn't warmed up.

Sorry for the double post but i'm feeling lazy today.

hey,

i've been forced by my band to start learning shred bs metal, cuz they have no respect for blues rock. i have no other options either.

anyway, apart from pentatonic major and minor scales, what are some common scales used in metal?

could you give me a site?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Natural minor (Aeolian), Harmonic minor, Lydian, Phyrigian.  Basically the diatonic modes.  Try a searh on google for an article or something on the different modes...that's probably a good place to start.

i have the peavey bandit 112 in mind. i've looked at all the reviews at harmony central and it seems like what i'm looking for.

what are some other good SS amps in that price range. I can't afford tubes and their impractical for me atm. I'm going to the guitar store in two weeks time so i wanna know apart from the bandit what else i should check out.

I need something for jam sessions and small/medium gigs.

WTF??!!?? You do have a choice, playing guitar is about expressing yourself and doing what you enjoy and a band is about everyone enjoying themselves, I love hard-rock and blues, mix the two up you can play fast blues ya know? I was in a band for 2 years and now im out jamming with ppl ya know and Ive played with sum metal bands but I wouldnt shred Id just play in my own style and work it around a song. Although sayin all that you should learn shred but incorporate it into ur own style I mean neer stop learning dude.

Title: Re:help starting on guitar (+Word of Advice)
Post by: Oddy on July 06, 2004, 04:09:29 AM
yeah that band sorta disformed, partly because the closest i could get to a metal sound was like an iron maiden thing.

i can shred, well not really but i can play fast like a sloppy version of Slash. Actually more like Angus Young.

what i can't shred like is yngie malmsteen etc and that was the sorta speed technique etc that was required.

the outcome was, well just imagine a solo like the paradise city outro solo over a slipknot song. you get the picture.

i've only been playing 8 months or so, so flying through chromatic scales is what i'm not capable of. I stick to funk/blues/rock n roll because not only do i find it easier, but its what i'm good at and it just sounds "right" to me.

with that being said i'll continue learning and picking up styles and techniques from other branches of music but still only put them into use for rock n roll and hard rock. maybe in a few years time i'll be able to shred up and down harmonic minor scales like a robot. :hihi:

I just started playing electric guitar 6 months ago, and can someone tell me what "playing in a certain key" means?  For example, is Sweet Child O' Mine in a different key than Jungle (I think it is)?  But, more importantly, how do I change my guitar to sound different for each song?  If anyone has any info on this, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks.

Hey dude, check out the first page of this thread. There some good links to guitar site's which help you start around. Always start with learning some chords such as G, C, D, Am, Em, etc. They'll explain it further on those sites. So check the first page!  : ok:

Title: Re: help starting on guitar (+Word of Advice)

Well generaly if you write with your left hand you should use an left handed guitar, this is not always the case though. I'm a lefty but I play normal guitars (This is because the old spanish guitar my dad used to play was a right handed guitar and I started with that) Anyway a good way to find out which hand you use for guitar is to pretend you're playing air guitar, if you strum with your left hand get a right handed guitar, if you strum with your right hand get a lefty guitar.
By the way you should start with an acoustic guitar? : ok:

find something that inspires you to play.  usually for me it's everytime i come back from a concert or watch a concert dvd that i feel the need to pick up my guitar and play.  also, whenever i watch slash or robin finck's playing, it looks so easy that i say to myself, "hey, if they're doing it without being lightening-quick then i should be able to play it".  that's about the time that i sit down and decide to work on learning an entire gn'r (or whoever) song all the way through.  this also helps by the way if you make it a sort of project to learn an entire song.  you can see progress with what you've learned and where you need to go.  as far as learning to read music, play scales, etc... i learned to read before but haven't touched it in probably four years, and i can't tell you shit about what scales are what.  all i've really learned is what it sounds like when i go to certain places on the neck and if it goes well with the music i'm playing over.  this works fine for me, but if you can learn to read/identify scales... more power to you.

I just got my acoustic today, after the first  one they sent the neck was broken in the mail. Anyways, I can read music I used to play Trumpet, and I understand basic knowledge of piano.

Is there any music books from a music store that would be good for me to read so I understand the basic note configureations on the guitar. And how to get to a good start and shit?

thanks,

jimmer

yep guitar pro is good, you got keyboards view and guitar view, so when you playing one you can see the other.
I am playing keyborads a long time now(yamaha PSR 290). I got a band "black widow"("crna udovica").I have been playing led zeppelin, deep purple, the doors.First serious influence with rock was when I heard guns n roses, so when I got time I play november rain, locomotive, civil war...  Someday I wiill learn to play guitar, yep, but for now its this.
good luck with learning...

The only thing that's weird is that it takes a minute or two to heat up before I can start using it.
It's not wierd exactly, it's just the way they work.  But you should actually leave them for about 20 mins or so on standby before you start playing, because it can seriously shorten the length of the tubes life by pushing when it hasn't warmed up.

Sorry for the double post but i'm feeling lazy today.

Don't be silly.  20 mins?!  That's crazy.  Leaving your tubes for maybe 2 or 3 is fine.  Regular use of a tube amp with 2 or 3 mins warmups, your tubes will last years.

I should know :D

Okay, so I've been playin' guitar for like 5-6 months now. I know the basic chords, and Major, Minor Penatonic, and Blues scales. Do scales work like, If someone is playing G chord, then I play a scale in G figure or whatever?

Yeah something like that , I'm still learning myself. I just got an acoustic guitar from my uncle, I haven't put it down since  :D

The best advice to a learner on guitar is don't give a flying fuck about becoming a career musician because if you dream about that , you will not want to play anymore once you encounter challenging stuff to learn.

think of the guitar as ur enemy........sitting there.......laughing at u cuz u can't do a certain lick or something..............are you just gonna sit there and let it laugh at you..........no you play it like a bitch and make it whine.

that.. is the most inspirational thing i have EVER heard.. i kid you not.. i've only been trying to play for about a month and half now and if i didnt have to go to class right now, i'd fucking sit down play the guitar til my fingers bled.. which i think i'll do when i get home tonight..

ps: thank you SO much to those people who posted those scales tabs.. you have NO idea how helpful that iss for a newbie like me. i'm eternally greatful to you guys!

I always find extremely helpful watching other guitarists play. I advise you to download a lot of videos where you can see, for example, Slash play and try to figure out his technique. I often feel more motivated to pick up my guitar after watching some music videos. :P

My favorite guitar site. Has a really cool community forum as well.

I strongly recommend it to every guitar player, be it a beginner or advanced. Before I found it I was quite frustrated, it kinda changed my life.
It's powertabs are the most accurate you can find on the Internet due to the approval system that each tab has to go through.

You can find there even a bunch of great Snakepit ptbs, Gilby's Cure Me Or Kill Me and of course GN'R & VR.
I wish there was some Izzy Stradlin stuff on there. But, well, everyone can become a tabber ;)

Should be helpful:

If you're playing solos with bends and rock vibrato, it's recommended that you have your thumb hooking over the neck, but always do what feels most comfortable for you, everything depends on how big (long) your fingers are. I have quite small hands and can't use "baseball bat" all the time. There are chords that involve hand stretching and thus are impossible to be played with your thumb hooking over the neck.

Dude, use google, there are tons of sites with pictures that show you exactly how to change strings properly. Just type change guitar strings in the search field.

yeah they are not too bad for beginners, specially cuz they are cheap and you don't have to invest too much at the beginning...but once you get goin you're gonna want better equipment. so if you are willing to spend the money now to get started then spend more later as you get better then it's definately a good deal...but that guitar and amp are both definately starter material, but if you are willing to spend about $500 instead of $200 you will get way better stuff

like the epiphone lp-100 guitar and a line6 spider II 112 (75W) amp (or even a spider II 30, i just got the 30W one cuz i don't need much more than 30 watts personally I'm just a hobbiest), but on musicians freind those 2 things would cost you about $450 USD. if you get the 30watt amp instead it'll only be about $410

but you should play before you buy!!! I can't stress that enough, go find a guitar shop and goof around with some stuff or ask a person in the store for advice and to play some stuff for you if you don't know much yet. If you buy something and hate the way it sounds it'll totally turn you off...

the crappier the guitar is on which you start the better, cause you're only gonna sound better from there on...

I ordered my first guitar from some kind of mail order catalogue(which wasn't a bad guitar at all!, I've heard fenders that don't sound as good as mine)

I later found out that van halen actually did the same thing? :hihi:

Ok so this is just my opinion, but..

When I started to play guitar (with no teacher), I used tabs to learn some songs and I thought it was the easiest/CLEAREST way. But then I got to a point where I found it really hard to catch the melody of some songs, so I got pretty frustrated and all. Then my father told me to learn to read notes, so I lend some books from the library. After couple of days I started to understand how to read them and started to play along Nirvana and stuff, and found it so much easier than tabs. These days I look at tabs only for some certain riffs etc.

But I think it depends on the person, which is the best way. But I really recommend people to learn the scales and chords and so on..

I agree
I only use powertabs and such, beginners dont usually realize that text tabs are useless, theres no way to learn the rhythm of a song from them.

Well since i will be picking up playing soon i thought i'd post here. I'm going to be getting my first guitar for christmas and it will be electric. I've read a lot of posts saying its better to start on acoustic cause its harder to learn and all. I'm going with electric though i just don't have much interest in acoustic. I will be getting one of these three guitars. These are the ones the guys at guitar center recommended to me. The guy i talked to at guitar center recommended the one for $299. I don't know if ill be getting that one though. Its going to be a gift so the final say in which one i get won't be mine unfortunately.

^^ Ibanez are supposed to make really good quality guitars for whatever you pay for them, so you should get a decent guitar. I was just wondering if you guys could suggest where to start with theory, like a book or website. Also a list of techniques and things to learn would be handy, like ranging from simple to harder techniques. I think would help a lot, because I seem to become stuck on what to learn, it also doesn't help that I have snapped my high E and have no money for new strings. :(

I started out on an Ibanez very similar to the ISJ20 and now that I look back, it was a crap guitar all around.  The sound was shitty, the hardware was cheap and the fretboard was super small.

Just start out with an Epiphone Les Paul, SG or Explorer.  All better guitars which have a Jr. or lower end model in the same price range.  I'm pretty sure I've even seen Epiphone Les Paul Jr. starter packs for $199 or something.

I say that, if you are learning, you don't need a great guitar. Just one that is technically functional.
Does it have what you need? Who cares about the wood, you can't play anyways. Color, pick-ups,
whammy bar... all stuff that really depends on how you do. Should you learn on an acoustic? They only
say that because there are less distractions. If you are worried about what sound to get or what
pedal to push, you're missing the whole point of playing in the first place. I say, learn on a piece of
junk. Less money spent and you can guage from there. Not everybody makes it. Let's be real.
Sometimes it's not for everybody. I have my gear because I need it. These bedroom players might have good stuff but
it just sounds good in the bedroom. I play. And playing bad sounds horrible. Learning the basics is everything.

Yeah they all come with what i need except the cheaper pack doesn't come with headphones but i can get those separate. I'm gonna need them too since i'm in an apartment. I'm not aiming to be a great guitarist and join a band or anything. Its just gonna be a hobby for me a chance to learn and play songs i like. Thats my main reason for wanting to learn. If i improve enough ill definitely look into a better guitar and amp then in those packs. You're right though no sense getting something really good at first cause you don't know what you are doing or how good you'll get. I hope i get pretty good at least. I'm getting a pretty late start at guitar at age 30.

I know this may sound corny coming from someone on a GN'R fan site. But my honest opinion is that you can't get a better band to jam to, if you are just learning guitar. I have played guitar for 6 years, and I only play Guns N' Roses, and my playing has improved immensely since I started.

So at first choose a GN'R song with an easy chord progrssion like Used To Love Her or maybe You Aint The First. Then once comfortable start taking on more songs with trickier patterns.

Also a good way to get a feel for soloing, is to pick out little riffs or fills in songs that appeal to you. Like Sweet Child for instance, and repeat and repeat until you are confident playing it. Then as part of your warm up for next time, play everything you did the day previous. If you do this, things will start to stick and you will find yourself open to much more stuff you never thought possible.

Then once you have gained some knowledge of chords, have some fun by re-arranging different positions for certain sounds.

For example this is a basic C chord.

------0-----
------1-----
------0-----
------2-----
------3-----
------X-----

But you can re-arrange this chord as a power chord which looks like this.

--------------
--------------
-----5-------
-----5-------
-----3-------
--------------

This is a technique that Robin Finck used alot, he played chords in different positions but achieved the same sound. For example the breakdown after the solo in patience, it starts with a D chord which looks like this.

-----2--------
-----3--------
-----2-------
-----0-------
--------------
--------------

But during GN'R live performances Robin changed this to a power chord position, which was situated on the 7th fret.

----------------
---------------
-----7---------
-----7--------
-----5---------
----------------

This is a helpfull thing for beginners to learn, as it will open your mind to the possibilities of what you can do. So I would say practice alot, keep things fresh, and always listen to Guns N' Roses.

What more can I say... ;D
