When it calls them selects, does that mean song snippets? Would kinda suck if they arent full songs. Guess we'll find out in a few hours.

Did I miss something? I only saw ISO, CD, then DTJ. They seemed to skip Brownstone and Jungle.

Well, the same thing I've disliked since about 2012; Slash's tone. DTJ is unlistenable with such a clean tone. You can even tell he's struggling to play such fast licks that clean, and a bunch of notes don't even ring out properly. Drives me nuts. Because it's so obvious and yet he doesn't seem to care.

I loved his Conspirators tone using the AFD100's... While it's not Robin Fink bad, I'm not a fan of his tone since the reunion with the Jubilee's.

I guess it's not even so much the tone that bothers me as the lack of gain to sustain the notes. But it is also the tone; what was going on with It's So Easy here? He sounded like his strings were covered in mud even though he was on the bridge pickup. And then CD and DTJ were super trebley.

Audio is straight from the soundboard so you won’t hear any audience, but also the crowd at the front are a result of paid pit tickets so there’s no changing that.

Most pit tickets are paid....

This was from the arena leg of the tour. Smaller pits, less people in them.

A show in a stadium in Europe you would have thousands of fans in the GA/pit.... In North America you would have a pit and seats.

If people are foolish enough to pay 1k per ticket for pit tickets then I’m not going to judge Gnr for taking their money.

I was recently at foo fighters gig where all tickets were the same price but people who bought the tickets first were in section 1 and others in section 2. Helps a lot of the real fans get to the front rather than the ones with deeper pockets.

The band is primarily a money making machine these days so I’m not complaining, loads of bands do it but is definitely moving away from the the original meaning behind rock as a genre.
Lack of cd sales can also be blamed.

Title: Re: Not In This Lifetime Selects starts today
Post by: jarmo on May 22, 2020, 11:37:39 AM
Instead of having the pit in North America, they could have put seats there and sold those for more money.

So not everything is about making money or whatever you assume....  :peace:

I don’t understand why they picked a 2019 show...

Maybe that was the easiest material to get. 2016 was years ago. First you need to find the material..... 2019 was more recent. So maybe it's easier to get.

I will say it again also why don't they release the soundboard recordings of their shows like pearl jam,Metallica etc.

Maybe they just prefer to do it this way...Select tracks from different shows.

Both of those bands are not under contract to a record company.

Did not know that. I thought both were still under contract to a record company. Would a record company really stop them releasing audio recordings of concerts. The Chili Peppers they release recordings and they are under contract to warner. It can be done I guess.

I think they might license their records to be distributed by someone else.

I know that when Pearl Jam originally released all those official bootlegs in 2000, they were signed to a record company. I'm sure if you do that, you need to re-negotiate the contract since there's probably a clause there about a live album or something...

that Chinese Democracy sounds badass.  : ok:

I know it's a question of personal preference and I have nothing
against the guy who seems nice but I still don't get the attract of
Frank Ferrer on drums in that band, it doesn't seems to fit with
the other fellows to my ears. maybe I'm the only one.

Am I really the only one who thinks it's shit?

Very poor editing.
And obviously Axl has some issue with using his image. That is okay if we are talking social media pictures (I don't give a shit) but if you are watching a live recording you just have to use the singer footage. It just doesn't make any sense to use so many times the wideangle stage shot and only very small glimpses of Axl. It's frustrating. You naturally are interested in the frontman.

I don't expect any professional release-ready recording but the quality of this video could much more improve if it was treated well in the edit.

Unless they pull from the April 1st, Dodger Stadium, or Super Bowl Weekend Show, you are just getting the soundboard feed mixed with the footage from the feed for the screens. I assume when they are using produced footage behind them (like for Jungle, Shadow, etc...) the cameras probably aren't following individuals up close and that's when we get the large panorama shots.

That's not the problem. As I said - I don't expect professional recording with shitloads of camera angles. What I do expect is that when you have this setup with only five cameras (wide-stage shot / left camera (mostly for Duff) / central camera (mostly for Axl) / right camera (mostly for Slash) / drums camera) that you use the singer's footage (which is naturally the one everyone is most interested in) more that two seconds each shot. It just doesn't make sense. All the other cameras are being used in the edit much more frequently (and for a longer time) than Axl's central camera. I really don't care seeing so many times the stage in wide angle. It kills the vibe.

Yes.

One of those songs that we didn't expect to hear live. Like Coma used to be as well.

But Coma was a regular in the set!

And Locomotive made a few appearances last year which was fucking amazing. Hearing it live was definitely one of the highlights of the 2019 tour.

I never thought I'd hear Coma live and it was utterly, truly spellbinding. Hopefully one day I can also hear locomotive. I actually think a stripped back semi acoustic version would be interesting, to really allow the dark psychological beauty of the lyrics and musicianship shine.

That would definitely change the dynamic of the song. With the way they played it live last year, it was very powerful sounding. Like a locomotive!  :hihi:

Honestly, I think they may be struggling to agree on what else to release, because the first couple songs of every show are easy ones for Axl just to get him warmed up. As you get into more difficult stuff, he can be more hit and miss and we know what a perfectionist he is about anything he releases.

Right and wrong. I mean, they picked a 2019 show where his voice is crackin everywhere and even guitars don't sound good. If they pick a 2016-2017 show i can easily tell them which songs they could pick.
I just think they sensed a little bit of bad mood in fanbase so they put out the first available thing.

This was exactly what I was hoping for. You rarely get to see Gnr in high quality with a great mix and this delivered for me. Would love this whole show.

I'm glad they released more!  I hope they can get a more frequent rotation but this was pretty awesome.  I wasn't real fond of Axl's voice on Slither but the rest sounded pretty good to me!

Agreed, Slither is not a strong song for Axl. There is something about his annunciation that throws the verse off almost like he's singing it longhand vs Scott singing it shorthand if that makes sense? I just love how that song kicks into Slash's guitar solo so I'm glad it's there.

the main problem is that nobody said to axl that singin with a clean voice is ok when you have a ‘beautiful’ voice. When u go full nasal, with thin and weak voice without diaphramatic sustain well... just avoid it, at least in ‘new’ songs. Don’t even try. At the end of the day It’s not all about hitting high notes, but how do you hit those notes. We know that in certain songs you have to do it in order to preserve your voice, but obviously there’s a limit.

I don't have the same issues with his voice on Slither that some people have (but he is questionable on the chorus)... He just sings the verses weird... He says words that Scott and even Myles don't fully enunciate like in this clip it's at about 1:06 he just has an odd cadence singing that verse...

You're talking about the line "that's the spot where you run to me", aren't you? Yeah, he gets it wrong every time. Honestly, I think he just never really listened to the song enough to learn the cadence of that line. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even listen to it more than once to learn it, since he was surely already familiar with it, being quite a hit single. He probably just memorized the lyrics and then practiced with the band based on how he remembered the vocal melody from hearing it on the radio sporadically over the years.

Haha, that’s exactly the line. It’s sounds like someone who picks a song that they only know the chorus of to do karaoke, but then doesn’t know the melody or pace of what they are reading.

It's not his voice that bothers me. It's just a very very dull version.

Enjoyed watching that, all good.

They were really into YCBM, running around stage and that. I like Attitude, thought that was good. I thought SCOM was fine, always like Slash playing his part on that. I thought Slither was fine, just sounds a little different. The crowd seemed to be having fun too, and it looked like good weather. It was fun seeing all the rides in the background. Festivals eh  8)

What show is everyone hoping for next?
Is it safe to say these will be dropping monthly?

I’d like to see some pro footage from Vegas 2016, Dodger stadium 2016 or Slane 2017.

Hoping and expecting are two different things.  ;)

I mean, some of the material from years ago might be more difficult to locate than something more recent.

Which might explain the 2019 footage in the first video.

I am hoping to see some footage from Poland... I suppose everyone who was at a certain concert, is under the impression that he was at the best show of the tour. simply because watching/listening to a band live vs video footage is incomparable. The band sounded fantastic and was in such a good mood at the Poland show... They played everything... even maddy aand whole lotta rossie.

I think it is such an important aspect. If the band are enjoying themselves, it feeds into the crowd and makes the whole experience much more special and personalised. It sounds like a good concert to show.

I’m late to the party on this one, but I have to say I like how axl does the chorus on slither. The slight change in the vocal melody is pretty cool.

Also can we take a minute to appreciate slash’s green les Paul? Looks awesome.

Nice performance
The mix could be better, Slash's guitar is barely audible in the first minute of the song, then it gets a little better but still a little low
Axl's performance is not brilliant but more than ok to me
The rest of the band  : ok:

We should get better mixes from a band of this caliber

LOVE LOCOMOTIVE!!!

Fuck yeah. Not only did they play it, but released a pro shot recording?

What is up with Slash's guitar though? It sounds like it's on the rhythm pickup the whole song, but it's not. Just a muddy ass tone for some reason.

I never noticed Axl has the upper and lower octaves for the chorus playing under him (very buried in the mix). Would have been cool to have Melissa do the higher octave. Maybe Frank could do the low, too?

Fuckin' love the outro, what a jam. They should just do every Slash solo to that backing instead.

Band was really tight on Civil War.

Richard sounded great on every song. It's nice to have him up high in the mix like this because he has great tone and obviously rhythm guitar is important. That little vibrato bit he did on Wichita sounded killer.

Still baffled why Slash doesn't use more gain though. He's picking long bends twice on Estranged because the note decays too soon.

I'm not knocking the guy i don't think anyone in Rock has as good a vocal range or abilities as him ,when you hear Vince Neil, Jon bon Jovi or Joe Elliott trying to tackle those high energy songs they wrote in their 20s there is no comparison .

I don't get why they release footage of Axl's voice not at his best.  That can't be supportive/bait for future DVD releases.  I could see releasing a whole show where he's not at his best on some songs because you can move right on through the whole set and say the show was good.

Did you notice the chat box during that?  It was moving so fast you couldn't even read it.  Didn't notice how many people tuned in.

If you release nothing, it's not good.
When you release something, it's not good enough, it's not what some want etc.

Why not just enjoy it instead of focusing on whether or not some one missed a note, whether or not it sounds as good as show X or maybe show Y....

This is exactly why I'm not buying the "WE WANT NEW MUSIC"  line as some kind of answer to everything. These will probably be the people who will use terms like "overproduced" when describing the music... :hihi:

Band was really tight on Civil War.

Richard sounded great on every song. It's nice to have him up high in the mix like this because he has great tone and obviously rhythm guitar is important. That little vibrato bit he did on Wichita sounded killer.

Still baffled why Slash doesn't use more gain though. He's picking long bends twice on Estranged because the note decays too soon.

I've not been a huge fan of Slash's tone since they reunited. The Jubilee Rig he runs sounds much weaker than when he played the AFD Heads in SFMK, also he sounds super thin next to Richard who running an insane boutique setup that just rings.

Axls voice was not bad, I thought it sounded good on Nightrain. People need to be less critical, he is almost 60 years old. Good to see Guns performing.

I agree that any DVD should be from 2016, but for being at the tail end of a 3 year long tour here, he sounds pretty damn good. Nightrain especially.

Ever since he started touring with Myles in 2010, he's been using less gain and it's just not right for the heaviness of the material he plays and the sustain needed. The Slash album was the last time I really thought he had good tone. The latest one with Myles practically sounds like chicken pickin' country at times, it's so clean. A very weird choice as he went noticeably heavier in terms of material with the World on Fire album.

This select is amazing, maybe the best one yet... I really enjoy these videos or reminisces of the concerts we witnessed :o.
Its incredible how well the whole band sounds, live on the stadium floor and on these videos. Have in mind that what we hear through these videos is filtered compared to the sound you hear on the stadium floor. On the concert you simply do not hear that much difference between the sometimes "conserved" voice and the raspy one, at least I didn't on 5 occasions. What you hear is a beautiful mix of three guitars, drums, pianos and all other instruments and Axl`s voice on top of that, echoing through hundreds of speakers in combination with the noise/singing of 30K+ people... It really does not make much sense commenting Axl's voice on a 3.5 hour rock concert which repeats itself almost 150 times per year, for three years  :peace:

man ok, but it’s like they don’t care or they don’t have ears... it’s like having 2-3 charlize theron nude pics but showing the one in which she wears a fuckin burqa. You know it’s always a charlize pic, but you can’t be satisfied knowing they had the nude ones. You start a selection with axl almost crackin two notes and slash’s out of tune guitar?   Cmon...

The reality is that you could be imagining of having those nude pics and instead having fake Photoshopped ones, drawings and other inferior material.

Once you get the real deal, you complain that the pose is wrong, the light is wrong, the photos were developed wrong etc.

In other words, you forgot that you had nothing and were complaining about it. Until you had something, and you're still complaining about it. That's the reality we live in.

Now I get it, every one has their opinion and preferences. But it just seems like the whole act of wanting something is not true to some. They don't want something, they want something very specific. And even then, it's probably not gonna be what they thought they wanted.

GN'R put something for fans to enjoy for free on Yuotube? Awesome!
Is it from the show you wanted them to put there? No? Ok, either enjoy it, or hope for better luck next time.
Doesn't sound the way you want it to sound? Better luck next time.

100% correct. But if u go and read the comments almost everywhere, nobody complained about Houston, for example. Again it’s like they don’t get what people like the most. Just this. It shouldn’t be this difficult to distinguish between a good performance and a bad one. They have thousands shows, can’t they pick better ??? Cause i really could pick better..

If your choice is to post something now, instead of waiting longer for the possibility of something else, which do you pick?

Depends on their reason for posting.

I'll admit it. I'll never understand people who complain about not having anything, then complain when they got something that it's not what they wanted.

Be honest. Don't go on and on about how you (not you personally) want something, because in reality you want something very specific that might not even exist in the form you want it.

Don't say "I want live clips on YouTube for me to watch for free." when you only want clips from the summer of 2016 for example. And if it's possible to be even more specific, even better.

At the end of the day, someone who wants something very specific isn't gonna be happy if they get something else. It's been obvious for years now.

For example, "We want a reunion".... Nope, you weren't happy with Duff and Slash back in the band. You wanted the AFD line up....

 :hihi:

Nothing too serious here. Just poking fun at things that make no sense to me. I mean, complaining about complaining probably makes no sense to others... :D

To me Something is better than nothing, but only if that something meets the expectations of the people or a decent standard. And It's not like you have to realease new music and you don't really know your target... You KNOW, for example, that people makes fun of the mickey mouse voice, and u keep showing axl out of breath with that weak voice, knowing that there are really much better performances? I don't need to see that in HD, man. It's all about taste and their own interest to not feed the fire vs axl's voice (maybe they want us to get used to that kind of voice?) or vs the band not at its top. It's like they put out the Bridge School Benefit Concert cause it's better than nothing. Cmon, they can do a lot better... And i'm not even talking only about axl, for example in the first selection you can hear probably the worst chinese democracy ever played by slash  :hihi:...we are talking about a "selection" man, not about whatever you have.

As I said, maybe you're not the target audience then? Because it's not what you want.

And you know if they put out something perfect, made to sound as good as possible, you'd be the first to point out that it's not how it sounded at the show...

So until they post exactly what you want, maybe skip these videos?

Let me explain it to you again. The selections are made out of content that's available. If show X is available, but show Y (which is what you want) isn't, they'll post what they have. Easy. It doesn't say The Best Clips Of The Tour or Selections Of The Most Amazing Clips In Our Archives...

Ok man but not everything that is available is valuable. Just this. You have a legacy to defend, and we all know that gnr has had highs and lows, but if i was the gnr manager i'd rather show the higs, you know...But, again, it looks like they don't know (or they don't care) what are the highs.

It felt so good to listen to this ''Wichita'' version. I think it's duo to the fact that I'm (re)reading Slash's book after 13 years and he tells that the acoustic set was the way GN'R wrote their songs back in the day. I know it's not completely acoustic but you can get a feel of it anyway.

Probably the best versions of Black Hole Sun and Shadow of your Love. Not the best version of LALD. Fortus really outshone Slash in KOHD. IDK why Slash didn't just grab the 6-string neck and kick on the distortion. Trying to solo with the clean 12-string just sounded embarrassing, I'm sorry. I really can't wrap my head around a lot of his tone choices lately. The intro to Paradise City sounded so weak and dry. Where's the reverb?

yeah his tone really sucks and it’s gettin worse and worse... no sustain, hyper dry sound...Fortus is way better i mean he has 2000 effects but very well balanced and he has a thick sound, i really like it.. on the other side slash can’t use sustain and reverb/delay..I don’t get it,I can’t understand his choices.

Serious question here. I get that this is a fan forum, and that being a fan sometimes means looking past issues and defending the band you've been following forever... BUT did any of you finish watching/listening to this last drop and REALLY think that it was good? I'll be honest the embarrassment actually caused a physical reaction in me, I could feel in my stomach how hard it was to watch.

Why in the world would you pick that show (or really even that year) for any of this content. There is no power to Axl's voice, the Mickey Mouse things is on display everywhere but Shadow (because he has to scream it like he did with ACDC), but the troubling part is the Mickey Mouse is paired with pitch and tune issues. The on line reviews of this aren't without merit, this sounds like a bad karaoke version of most of these songs.

I pray that 2020 was spent with a personal trainer like he's Brad Pitt getting ready for Fight Club 2, along with a vocal coach. I also wonder how their (Axl's) forced use of in ears and iso cabs with no live sound effects this sound and mix. I know people have also complained about Slash's tone, but he doesn't sound nearly as "thin" with the Conspirators... the difference there is that there is actually live sound coming from the stage, which coincidentally is exactly what Axl performed in front of with AC/DC.

The effect you are looking for that is missing on Paradise City is Chorus, not reverb... BUT his sound is too dry and needs more reverb (although it does show up on the SCOM intro).

Why in the world would you pick that show (or really even that year) for any of this content.

I can think of multiple reasons for "why this, and not that?" etc.
Maybe it was easily available since it was the most recent full tour? Maybe this was never considered to be released (as in something you'd pay for) to begin with, and therefore is just something they shared with us for free instead of, well, not sharing anything during 2020?

People complained that Live Era wasn't live enough, and now these clips aren't the best ever. Maybe it was never the purpose to begin with. Maybe the purpose was just to give fans something in a time of a lot of nothing? I guess I'm reading too much into the name, Not In This Lifetime Selects? It's not called the Not In This Lifetime Greatest Performances or Highlights... Or even Best Of The Not In This Lifetime tour.

I enjoyed these clips for what they are. Some looks back at shows from 2019, and a bit from 2018 and 2016. It doesn't replace anything in my mind. Is better than this or that? No, it's in addition to everything.

So in the end, you didn't like a clip, big deal. We all know what would happen if there were no clips to comment on to begin with..... :)

I agree with COma to some extent Jarmo. Yes, there's been too much whining and complaining here in the past...17 years hehe, and I understand you don't want to revisit any of that.

But, in my opinion, posters should be free to discuss if Axl's voice sucks or whether Slash misses a few notes, or if Frank is not keeping up with Duff. We are just expressing an opinion. This is our favorite band. All of us are in the same boat here, we want the best for GNR.

But I concur with COma, Axl's performance in LALD is subpar. I don't want to get into why some clips are chosen over others, as you said, there could many reasons why. But hey, nothing wrong with commenting on how we perceive the quality of performances. I don't think we are just complaining, just sharing something that's relevant to the topic.

We are grateful to enjoy something to watch/listen to from the GNR camp until we get new music / new gigs, but I see no harm in saying "Axl's voice is crap in LALD".

The truth is, he can never win.

I remember when he sounded too good and some were busy finding clues in YouTube clips proving that it was all playback.  :hihi:

I don't know, maybe the fact that 2020 sucked so much made me even more of a believer of "be happy for what you got while you got it".

No one is censoring anybody here. Everyone is free to express their opinions. So too is Jarmo if he disagrees with you. There are over 400 pages in this thread to display complaints relative to the topic. The persecution complex is ridiculous...

EDIT: I thought I was in the "New Album Speculation" thread, hence the 400 pages comment. Still, the point remains...

I totally agree... my opinion is my opinion and other posters (Jarmo included) have their opinions. We can question each others opinions, try to counter each others opinions etc... I don't view Jarmo's response to my post as an attack or some kind of persecution.

One of the reasons I like this forum over some of the other popular options is that there is far less bullshit here. Yes this thread is pages and pages long, but it is less fighting, and less comments just to comment and somehow raise post count and status.

I asked a question about the latest release because I was struck by how bad it was and how bad the public reaction to it is. Yet in reading this site there was a lot of "that is the best version of BHS yet" and "Axl sounds great" which genuinely shocked me to see. Then that is always followed "We are lucky to have gotten anything in 2020". My opinion is that is a cop out... You can dislike the artists, but Taylor Swift has released 2 albums in 2020 that have been widely praised. The Rolling Stones released old material from the Steel Wheels Tour. AC/DC released what is widely considered the Rock Album of the year and their best effort since the 90's. Bon Jovi released an Album, Pearl Jam released an album. Yet we got clips from random shows with very little editing and mixing spread out over a 7 month period. Meanwhile Metallica and Peral Jam have been releasing every live show they've done for the better part of a decade (and almost 20 years for Pearl Jam).

I should really subscribe to the be happy with what you get mentality, but it just feels so weird that a band that wants to control everything and make everything perfect seems to butcher things like this all the time. They turn wrenches on an album from 99-08 to then butcher the release with the Best Buy fiasco, Dr. Pepper certificates, etc... Now you have the biggest reunion in recent memory with a successful tour and never quite capitalize on it. They messed up the Nightrain thing every year, they focus on BS merchandising and pinball machines... They release basically raw soundboard audio from super random shows where they definitely didn't sound great, then the excuse is "they released what they had, what else do you want, we are lucky we got anything." Bullshit... they have every show they've done on tour. They are just capturing the video board feeds and mixing that with the soundboard. It's possible that those shows for whatever reason took less effort to mix and throw some graphics on, but there is a less than zero chance that in this day and age they don't have every second of audio and video from this tour starting with the Troubador show.

Again this is all my opinion and analysis of what I see, so I take no offense in Jarmo not agreeing. At the end of the day I have a real life and real things to worry about, but for some stupid reason this band is a source of enjoyment so when they lay an egg it bothers me and sometimes I need to get it off my chest. My wife was done listening to it in about 2005, so this is my sounding board.

Maybe the problem is that just because you think something, doesn't make it true? Who said they want to make everything perfect?

Because many of the things you listed were the best options available at the time. Chinese Democracy at Best Buy, or nowhere? Which one is better? Even if it's not perfect....

NITL Selects from some shows, or from no shows?

So many examples like this. Like people not liking GN'R playing a certain festival when in reality if they didn't the tour would've probably skipped that part of the world. So then it's festival gig, or no gig this time? No one said it has to be perfect....

You don't like certain merch? Well, maybe the next guy does? Who said it needs to appeal to everyone. I'm not gonna buy myself the women's or kids' shirts , but that doesn't mean I don't understand why they are sold.

Basically what we have now are certain people complaining that something isn't perfect, yet they're the same ones who keep pointing out that Axl just needs to release music instead of trying to make it perfect....  :hihi:

I'm not saying it has to be perfect, but you can't deny that their constant tinkering on the last album and the overthinking exclusivity in everything they do doesn't exist. Like the Best Buy thing... in what world did it need to be Best Buy or no where, how about release it like every other band on the f**king planet and just make the damn thing available everywhere.

I have no issue with them playing Festival's, I'd actually like to see them in that environment once, but it is 100% false to think that they only had Exit 111 for footage to release, and yes it was terrible. I just find it odd that the one thing with "creative" content that they seem to be all willy nilly with is this YouTube content. Everything else is controlled and this is "what do we have that we can put on the website in the next 4 hours?"

There has to be a happy medium between the Chinese Democracy sessions/mixing/release and Hey lets drop raw poorly mixed audio every few months because nothing else was going to happen this year. Did I hate the years that passed with nothing in the late 90's and early 2000's... sure, but at the same time no one would have wanted a new "VMA 2002" or "Metal Hammer Sweet Child O Mine" to drop every few months to just embarrass the legacy.

Rick Dunsford has release more useful GnR material since 2008 than GnR has. That is sad... Axl, Slash and Duff have been back together for 5+ years at this point... In their first 5 years we got LLAS, AFD, LIES, and we were on the cusp of early Illusions releases.

You mean, why did AC/DC need Walmart?

It's called a catalyst. Or a deal that makes (or at least seems to at the time) sense to everyone involved.

Why did GN'R need Coachella to get Duff and Slash back? It happened that way.... Would it had happened without them? Who knows.

Why did GN'R release song Z from show X, instead of song A from show B? Maybe because it was the fastest option? Maybe they wanted to give fans something? Was it perfect? Was it supposed to be? Or just something to take your mind off whatever else was going on in the world in 2020?

AC/DC had a limited exclusive Vinyl release, but also released a music video and multiple singles just since November. GnR never released any official video for CD... they had the goat thing that somehow blew up because (shocker) there was a miscommunication and someone sent the wrong thing to the wrong company and butchered the Harley thing, also much like the time they mistakenly announced a tour no one knew about. The closest thing to a music video for a GnR release since WTTJ Live Era is the Lyric Video for Shadow of Your Love which then thankfully became the tour footage version.

I don't think it's unrealistic to hope and talk about them even matching 1/5th of the output of pretty much every other band out there... and I don't mean rushed unproduced tour snippets. Like I've mentioned Metallica and Pearl Jam have found a way to release every show they do, but we should be excited by YouTube clips and no new material of any kind.

Hey we probably have Valentines Day shirts and bandanas coming soon!

AC/DC had a limited exclusive Vinyl release, but also released a music video and multiple singles just since November.

AC/DC did a Walmart exclusive release for Black Ice. The independent stores got the vinyl only.

So for such a professionally run operation, they did something so... wrong? Oh no!

GnR never released any official video for CD... they had the goat thing that somehow blew up because (shocker) there was a miscommunication and someone sent the wrong thing to the wrong company and butchered the Harley thing, also much like the time they mistakenly announced a tour no one knew about. You're mixing things up. The Harley Davidson advert was way before Chinese Democracy was released. You think it was weird that they weren't allowed to use an unreleased song in an ad years before the album was released?

Maybe GN'R didn't release videos because once the album was out, the record company disappeared?

Hey we probably have Valentines Day shirts and bandanas coming soon!

Possibly. Fingers crossed.

I don't think it's that bad. And when it comes to BHS and Shadow, they weren't playing those songs in 2016 or even 2017 I believe. These are definitely the best versions in terms of having none of the frankly common mistakes in timing they would make, especially with Shadow. I think we just have to accept that to some extent they will never sound like they used to, and enjoy touring too much to stop when they probably should for the sake of Axl's voice. However, there's not really any reason why Slash can't make his tone identical to the UYI tour if he wants to. That's not temperamental and uncontrollable like the human vocal cords.

Also, I think he sounds just as bad with the Conspirators. He plays way too clean, especially for some of the heavy, almost metal material he did on World on Fire, it was just incomprehensible to me.

The effect you are looking for that is missing on Paradise City is Chorus, not reverb... BUT his sound is too dry and needs more reverb (although it does show up on the SCOM intro).

I never looked into it before, but it seems like you're right. Must be a light use of it, because it's really not that noticeable.

I said it was the best version of BHS literally amidst the comments that LALD was subpar and Slash's tone sucks. So it's not like there is just mindless praise on this board. I explained above why I think these were the best versions of BHS and Shadow. Axl's voice isn't noticeably different from how I recall the debut performance of BHS anyway, so what show would have been superior?

I think the big difference from many other places where it will get you a lot of upvotes to say hyperbolic things like "Axl sounds like shit", is that we (or at least speaking for myself) try to have more nuanced takes here. I think Slash's tone has been lackluster for years, but there are still moments where he really shines, and there's no denying Richard has really stepped up to the plate.

Also, I don't think these are raw soundboard rips. Especially with the last two, I've noticed Richard up front in the mix, seemingly to deliberately highlight his contribution. And they just sound well mixed overall, IMO.

Outside of Shadow which is like Jungle, it's just good at every show... I think the rest of them were embarrassingly bad for Axl. BUT that is my opinion, everyone has different ears.

I will say I have always thought Richard was by far the best of the CD era guitar players and the best pairing with Slash. Having said that his tone is considerably better than Slash's at this point because of his tireless search for the perfect effect, amp, and pickup. Slash caught lightning in a bottle with a Les Paul with SD Alnico II pickups into a Marshall with little in the way of effects and just chugs along with the same tired rig. I do think that there is a huge difference in even his Conspirators tone when he switched from Ace back to Adam Day... The distortion in his amp really dropped off, I thought it was him swapping from the AFD amps to the Jubilee's and old 90's Slash Model Amps. I would love to see some complexity to his rig even just pushing the amp with something like a King of Tone or OCD pedal would make a huge difference.

As far as the mix, I really think we are getting what Caram and crew does day of show and nothing more. There is a mix but it is tuned to what he is hearing in the venue which doesn't translate to say headphones or speakers in your room. Which could explain why The Download Festival and Exit 111 shows are IMO the worst of the Selects, Axl comes off as very weak in those shows Slither, BHS, and LALD really highlight that shrill Mickey thing. I really wonder if there wasn't also some level of sickness because like I mentioned above he is also having major pitch and tune issues. If they spent time mixing it post show/pre YouTube then why not choose a better version? There is a 0% chance that they don't have every second of on stage audio (including soundcheck) since the tour started on April Fools Day... I get that certain songs came at different times, but they've only have 9 months to work on this stuff, find the best version, or top 3 if they are planning to use the best for an official release.

That's the thing though, Slash's tone used to kick ass. I love his UYI tour sound, which he basically kept the same through the 2nd Snakepit album and tour. Ever since VR, he's been dialing back the gain and just can't get the sustain necessary for his style of playing as a result. You can see him visibly work harder and even strike a sustained note twice because it decayed too quickly (often on Nov Rain).

When did he switch back to Adam Day? I know he was with Ace on Apocalyptic Love, which was already too clean for me. In any case, I don't think he needs any pedals, because he didn't in 1992. He just needs to twist the gain knob a little more like he used to. His tone and playing from '92-93 will forever be a huge inspiration to me.

Frankly, I don't think Axl ever really shone on Slither or BHS. I didn't notice any pitch issues, just that his voice doesn't have the power it used to in the register he uses for those songs.

What would you consider a better version of BHS?

What would you consider a better version of BHS?

Obviously I haven't heard it from every show, but doing this off the top of my head it was one of the two Sirius Radio shows, I think LA. It was pretty good there, and the audio mix from both of those are spot on (with some hiccups dialing it in early for the Apollo gig). I would assume other shows from that time frame as opposed to much later in the tour sound better... but the mixing of those 2 shows Apollo and LA really to my ear sounds much better than almost any of the Selects we've gotten and obviously they were broadcast live.

I'm watching this at the moment.

I can't help but thinking, that band, what a mess, how much opportunities wasted in the last 30 years.

well, nothing new here and I'm playing captain obvious, but as much as I can enjoying the good old songs when they're well played, I'm thinking about the 3 albums of their prime years we'll never had too.

of course we lived our lives without, but it didn't have the same taste without Guns N'Roses around.
and now they're back, in some capacities, but it's still the same songs, played in the same way, and it gives me that bittersweet sensation, to think, if multiverse exists, they had some continuity in another reality and they produced a lot more of albums, a more dense oeuvre.

yeah I know, it is what it is, and it had way more impact on their lives that on ours. but still.

we have to live with that. sounds melodramatic maybe, maybe I'm the only to feel that way.

maybe it's just because it's 3 AM and I need to sleep.

Great vocals by Axl him and Fortus seem to really enjoy the gig hard to know with Slash and Duff they give very little away ,nothing wrong with their playing but they just don't seem like they are enjoying It I've noticed that in a lot of the gigs they've posted on YouTube maybe it's down to their stage persona or that they are fixated on playing well but sometimes it looks like they aren't overly enthusiastic to be there .

That's just how they are these days. Watch Slash with Myles and it's the same. But he's always been a pretty aloof "devil may care" type.

If you go to to any SMKC, you'll see Slash act the same way as he does with GNR. He's just known to be that way. If you notice, though, you can tell that he's enjoying himself. For example, the way he jumps at the end of Jungle.  Slash and Duff is just coolness. They are old school guys.

I've never seen them "enjoy" the show, even back in the days when axl would try to make slash laugh taking his hat, wearing a mickey mouse mask (lol). So it's pretty normal.

Have you ever seen Axl happier though?

UYI tour will forever be my favorite GNR tour.  But let's face facts.  Axl is not a happy man on that tour.  The lateness, the rants, stopping songs, storming off stage.  He was a pretty tortured soul on that tour.  And you saw zero camaraderie on stage with anyone.

2016 onwards, looks like a totally different cat.  All that drama that plagued the UYI tour : absent.  Never late, no rants, no storm offs.  And look at him on stage.  He is smiling.  He seems to enjoy being up there with his guys.

The best part of the NITL era, for me, has been the change in Axl.  it's awesome to see him having a good time out there.  I'd argue, for the first time ever.

Really wish they’d release these more often or at least start offering some full shows from the NITLT tour, hell even officially release some UYI shows. I’d have to imagine there’s people out there including me that would drop some major coin to own physical copies

I am sure that they are holding everything they can back for a rainy day - or at least when Axl, Slash or Duff dies! Which could take many years from now. There are no legal excuses to hold something back, when it's GnR that hold the rights to their own material and can do with it as they please. But the problem could also be that Axl might care about trusting the right people to work with the best stuff without it getting leaked in case something goes wrong in the professional working relationship.

But then again - I hope that is not the case!

We have a tip off from Jarmo that a physical release of Absurd is in the works, and we know for a fact that a UYI set is as well. A dude working on it literally came here for suggestions.
