Title: General GNR chat
Post by: cineater on July 18, 2022, 01:14:52 PM
When it doesn't fit any where else.

I'm watching In The Middle.  Show with a kid named Axl.  The dad tries to sneak up on the mom for a little romance.  Scares her.  Tells him to give her the usual cues when he's going to do that.  Play their song, give her time to shave her legs, ect.  Later she walks in the door, Wichita Lineman is playing, she gets excited, runs to the sink and starts shaving her legs.   :hihi:

Wonder if Axl saw that?  Some woman on stage needs to whip out her razor and start shaving her legs the next time he signs that.  Maybe all the women in the front row.   :hihi:

Vanessa needs to be put in charge of GNR merch selection.  The Young Roadie stuff is really cute.  Way over priced for stuff kids out grown in the blink of an eye but it looks like quality and soft.  She's obviously not stuck in the 80's.  Some cool designs.

You think it's just random GNR plays Black Bird?  Is there a connection to that new min series or movie coming out?  Some how they heard about that and went cool, I remember that song.

Nice of GNR to point that out.  I don't know if my daughter would appreciate any of the designs on her onesies.  Kind of harsh.  The background colors are kind of cool.  Might go for the price and shipping if I really like the design, maybe some cartoons of the band members, no, not the robot.  It just doesn't say sweet child, except for where is does say sweet child of mine.  :hihi:  They all have cats.  Can we have a GNR cat mascot?  I'll even take an alley cat if it's not smelly.  ;D

For those of you who have an hour and 15 mins to spare Slash has given Gibson TV a run down of his guitar collection.

The man has a quite the collection of guitars. I definitely understand why it was one of the few things he asked not be touched in his divorce settlement  ;)

That stupid Monkey likes GNR youtube.   :hihi:  Triggers me every time:

One day the engineer wanted a bite to eat,
He left the monkey sitting on the driver's seat,
The monkey pulled the throttle, the locomotive jumped the gun
And did 80 miles an hour down the mainline run.

And I'm all over My Old School with GNR being in Guadalajara.  Not to mention the commercial with Slash in it is getting a lot of play.  Can't move around your world without GNR coming up.

Hi guys, long time hun?  ;D
With instagram, youtube and the possibilities to follow the band's news through these social networks, I admit that I've been away from here for a long time! I decided to stop by today to see if there was any recent Axl interviews, but from what I see, he hasn't appeared for a long time to do interviews, regardless of whether it's to talk about tour, album or anything else. Could it be that the magazines/websites don't try so hard to get an interview with him or should he just decline any kind of request? The band has been touring with Duff and Slash since 2016, 6 years already and I don't remember seeing a cool and interesting interview with Axl. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I think Axl spent a long time trying to change the sound of GNR giving it a different direction during the Chinese Democracy era, but in the end, GNR found its sound just where it started, with the original members, Slash and Duff.

It is funny GNR barely recorded collaborations with other artists, what comes to my mind is only Alice Cooper.

But I guess if GNR had stayed together they would have recorded something with Elton John or other artists.

I once dreamt that Slash and Axl, GNR, were preparing a new album, new music back in 1996, around, and that Slash was playing the piano for the new songs.

Imagine what they could have done if only they did not destroy themselves?

you forgot Michael Monroe from Hanoi Rocks...
Slash playing the piano...is probably not the best idea ever  :hihi:

I remember back in the day when I bought the UYI albums on cassette, listening to them non stop on my Sony Walkman...trying to imagine what will comes next...judging on songs like November Rain or Locomotive, I wondered if they could do a psychedelic progrock album, like a mix of that stuff and Sergent Pepper from the Beatles...

instead of that they let us down

I really wish they did a psychedelic Album, Izzy has some psychedelic songs, and I like them and I was expecting the whole band would jump in into that kind of music. Damn, they were truly the best RNR band. Did you watch Blackstreet's Fix video featuring Slash? Slash is on fire at that time, his looks, his masculinity, and his aggressiveness, a GNR album during that time would have been totally mind-blowing.

Beta's birthday.  Happy Birthday lady.  We missed Melissa's birthday.  Sorry girl but I'm late, hope it was a good one.

Looks like Axl may have lost somebody he knew.  The guy was a good actor.  A face and style you can't forget.

Let's focus in on the first and all the other good stuff.  We get to the second all too soon.

thx didn't know the track I just watched it, was cool. 1996, so it was just after he left.
well I don't know if psychedelism was the vibe of the time, probably not, even if we could have had some interesting rivalty with Oasis and their Be Here Now LP

Slash is tweeting about the new Godfather pinball machine.  League just got that in.  It was fun.  Don't remember much about it but I did get machine gunned a couple of times and put up a decent score.  And Foo Fighters is new.  Music is good on that one.  Scooby Doo as it turns out has it's circuits soldered in instead of plug ins.  It's broke and I'm sure Brian will sell it off as soon as he can.  One of those nights where we played every machine in the place.  My wrists still hurt.

Kind of surprised to see Slash there.  Appearance wise he doesn't really fit.  Musically, the guy's been around.  If he wants to lean GNR to more southern rock, country, I'd listen and probably for a good long time.  Axl can lean that way.  Take the band that way.  Go play around over there.  It will be fun!

Note I did not say some broken heart song how love screwed them over.  Kick that to the side of the road.

I still don't know how to play the Godfather pinball machine Slash tweeted about.  I stepped up to the machine, went for anything flashing, got a multiball and some where in there activated a second multiball and there were just balls every where.  This what happens when you give a woman some balls, she kicks your ass.  Replay on my first ball.   :hihi:  Yeah I don't know what happen.  All those balls in my face.   :hihi:  The jokes are endless.  We'll see if he lets us know what he thinks when he gets to play it.  I had a good time.

Dude, they pulled out 3 songs since CD. SOYL, Absurd and Hard Skool. If that's the comparison than I can agree. But in CD itself you have one of the most powerful ballads in their entire catalogue so not quite sure that the "Roses" part is entirely gone.

I'm going to say, oh god no unless Duff writes it.  :hihi:  Not young men any more.  They have experience and it didn't turn out well.  That's a lot of baggage to get the stars back in their eyes.  It's prenups and non disclosure agreements.  Goodbye to Romance, it's Hard Skool.

Alan Niven, ex-manager of GNR, stated Izzy was part of a soundcheck back in 2017 but that something pissed him off and he left.
For me it is just very weird there has not been an Izzy participation with GNR in this "reunion." And I think that what Alan Niven says about Izzy is true, in a video posted by APPETITE FOR DISTORTION BY BRANDO in Fb and twitter.
I think Axl is treating Izzy the same way Motley Crue is treating Mick Mars

Yeah, I don't know if Izzy wants to commit.  Might be fun hanging with the guys for a few months but then again it doesn't seem like they hang out.  Show's over and they head back to their hotel rooms and only spend time together when they show up to work.  Steven will show up.  He's a lot of energy to deal with.

Okay everybody speculate all you want, believe what you want to believe.  I chose to believe this guy.  I've followed him for years.  He's got the sources to have the best speculations and might even be fact imo, you'll have to decide who you want to believe.  He goes by Splat.  Posts over at evo.  Here's what he's saying:

Songs are coming out soon, summertime. Record label are the goto for this, band members vague on anything

A lot of people say a lot of things.  Some of them are speculation and some of them not.  Some of the nots happen, some get changed along the way and some get trashed and go another way.  We thought we knew the way things go in our world and along came covid.  Shit happens.   :hihi:  Slash has been faulted for being wrong on time frame.  I don't think that's a fair assessment of the things he says.

Title: Re: General GNR chat

Of course. And even people who just guess could guess something right at some point.

But I think it's safe to say that what Slash said is true. They have tracks that they worked on that they plan to release. Maybe the time frame didn't happen exactly as he thought. But then again, he didn't sound sure about the time frame to begin with.

Year off next year, assumed from external parties and plans outside gnr

Glastonbury will have at least one guest possibly, source, the guest. Very guessable lol

He’s now saying that new songs aren’t coming anytime soon.

Will this band ever release new songs?

Splat is saying that?  What happen to change his mind?  I'll run over there in a bit and see what he says.  What are we, about 6 weeks out from the tour starting?  I guess it's early enough to pull new songs out of the play list.

I wish GNR had kept on creating music,
they stopped too soon and they could have created amazing material
if only they had stayed together
this band self destructed itself
Izzy, Slash and Duff quit the band, and they fired Steven and Matt...
This was world s most dangerous band, so dangerous it destructed itself....
Axl sabotaged the band without leaving... back in the 90's

GNR musical evolution from AFD to The Illusion Albums was interesting...
I can only imagine what beauties they could have created... if they had stayed together and recognised each other influence and musical power....
I mean the family, the five original gunners and maybe even matt sorum

Title: Re: General GNR chat

Original GNR family is like the Beatles.

Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy
Paul, John, George and Ringo

Not precisely in that same order...

with Steven and Matt being the 5th Beatle Billy Preston

They had such a chemistry that even if you replaced one of these elements with another musical genius, such as Buckethead or Eric Clapton, it simply would not work.

Each element is essential to the perfection of GNR, one reason Appetite for Destruction was a HIT. It was the perfect album made up of the perfect band.

Drugs, alcohol and the music industry sabotaged GNR, not Axl.  Axl was the only one who cared enough to stick with it and he was not a happy camper either.  GNR was going down any way.  There was that crazy ass politician wife screaming at congress about what a bad influence rock was on kids.  All of the sudden, rock disappeared and was replaced by rap.  Most 80's acts were dead in the water by the mid 90's.  She got to MTV and she got to the labels.  80's rock basically disappeared over night from what I remember.

So did you see Frank's renters bitching?  Renters from hell if you ask me.

Megan is not sexually attractive. That is the problem if you are talking about a Rock Star.

I am not high, I do not do drugs.

Why are you upset?

This is the question people do to others when they are offended.

GNR has beautiful and deep lyrics and content, but it is also a binge, party, sex, drugs, and rock n roll kinda band.

Title: Re: General GNR chat
Post by: Carlos Gunner on May 05, 2023, 11:01:56 PM
I LOVE GNR, I have always loved this band. The original family.

I have to admit there are some things I do not like anymore about the band. The fact that they are older now, means their stamina and sexual presence have dramatically reduced. It is just not the same as it was back in the good days. Their sexual power was part of the magic GNR had in the past that was so deeply impactful, and uncontrollable also, it is mostly gone forever. It is sad but just part of nature and humanity.

I especially dislike the fact they spent part of their youth and adulthood fighting each other instead of creating more amazing material. It is true they wasted their chemistry and part of their lives fighting, instead of creating. That is just a damn pity to me. We could have outstanding material if just they stayed together.

GNR proved to reach its highest potential with Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy Stradlin, and you could have either Steven or Matt. The combination of these guys was tremendous, a bomb, that no other Rock N Roll band could replicate. Because these guys were the shit, the real deal. They destroyed themselves, and it was proven that not even Axl by himself was able to replace the other ingredients or elements of the band as successfully as how the originals were. No total disrespect towards the replacements, but the originals can not be replaced UNTIL TODAY, I told you Axl tried, but he could not, he even got himself a musical GENIUS maybe ten times better than Slash and he could not take his place, Buckethead.

I think the same will happen when Axl tries to write new music with the replacements or release it and he will realize that it is just not gonna overcome their old material, now only because they are old and their minds are not as they used to be, but also because the chemistry is just not the same, regardless of how virtuosos the other elements can be.

I think it is true Axl controls MOST to EVERYTHING in GNR. That is why I believe they do not release new music anymore. Let us say it, it is true that Axl's voice can not be compared to his voice in his prime, he lost a lot of his power, you could notice this even in the CHINESE DEMOCRACY Album.

I think Axl did not try hard enough to have Izzy back in the band, that was really disappointing to me. When I saw Axl's interview back in 2016 about Izzy and the reunion of the band, when I heard Axl I thought he was hiding something, and that was my impression, that he was not being clear about things, about Izzy.

Title: Re: General GNR chat
Post by: Carlos Gunner on May 06, 2023, 12:59:36 AM
I think the band itself became very superficial. and that was one reason, from my perspective, that it took so long for Axl to release new material after GNR's breakup, CD. The band had an image that was very hard to erase or replace. I remember there was a time after GNR's breakup when people did not respect GNR and thought it was a silly band, at least from what I remember when being a fan in a time GNR was forgotten and also ridiculed. I sometimes wonder how it came to happen they became popular again, cause I think people in the music industry will not help you unless they get something back.

Sex, drugs, and Rock N' Roll, the bad boy's lifestyle, loses some of its meaning when you are older.

I am aware of Axl's mental condition according to what I ve read and for what i ve seen him behaving. He is a musical genius, and yet there is no geniality without a touch of madness, for some. Every genius lives in between those polarities. Heaven and Hell.

Title: Re: General GNR chat
Post by: Carlos Gunner on May 06, 2023, 01:24:26 AM
I have considered that Slash and Duff came back to GNR mainly because they saw that their careers were not going anywhere higher and they returned to GNR expecting a better condition. But I also think that now that they are part of GNR they are sorta like puppets who follow Axl's instructions, and have no voice and no vote in the decisions, that Axl takes all the decisions. I personally think this is true because Slash has released material in a constant basis, but within GNR it has stopped.

I think the song ABSURD and the other one, Hard School, are ridiculous and desperate songs. I think it was just not the right choice to mix different GNRs eras and I also think it is a mistake to mix Slash and Duff with the replacements in GNR.

I think Richard Fortus consciously or unconsciously tries to look like Izzy Stradlin, unfortunately, they somehow resemble. But damn it must be hard for him to try to make himself a name while walking in somebody s else shoes.

I do not like the combination of Slash and Richard Fortus.I do not think they should share guitar solos in a song, different energies.

I get you, afd was a game changing album, but I think 30+ years on, it's all beyond analysis. I think, from a human perspective, the band members have to be doing what they're doing. It's about quality of life and peace of mind. If you think about all the rock and pop stars we have lost over decades, just be thankful they're here, and still able to entertain people.

It makes me consider Slash and Duff have no saying in the decisions in GNR.

They should close the cycle with an ultimate GNR album with Izzy Stradlin.

I think that Izzy aka Carlos Gunner is actually not so much into Izzy... I just think he is suffering from nostalgia... He can not comprehend why GnR do not put out stuff that sound like AFD and UYI, so the only logical explanation is that Izzy is missing.
Carlos, please forgive me if my assumption is wrong.
On the other hand an artist wants to move on, make fresh music that he is into at the moment. Its often hard to find the right inspiration... The music trend has moved on in other directions. The artists do not live the lifestyle (I have nothing to lose) they used to live in their artistic hay days...etc.

You are so correct. There seems to be quote on quote GNR fans not necessarily here but i would call fringe GNR fans that are just completely set on AFD Era GNR as the standard bearer for everything GNR and everything they do should resemble that. Where we have seen each album grow and be something different from its predecessor. Yes we would all love to have more examples of that but the reality is we don't. We embrace what we do get or just live in the past like alot of other fans on here. I am convinced that if it was atleast the UYI era lineup on Chidem the fringe fan would be clamoring it's the greatest album of the 2000s.

I wish Izzy was in GN'R composing music, that is what I want to listen to. the inspiration they have together, that bad ass rock n' roll that we love.

I miss the combination of the factors. That was amazing, that was irreplaceable, that shocked the world.

Izzy Stradlin does not need to be in the band actually, he just has to write music, that is what we love, their powerful compositions altogether.

Sorry for disrespecting Richard Fortus, but Izzy has the soul. That lovely chemistry.

Slash can not play Buckethead's solos...
Slash is an amazing player but BH is a better guitarrist.
I guess music is about soul and passion and sentiment which Slash has.

That is also the importance of Izzy and Steven.... Frank and Fortus are definitely better players and could possibly create great music, but it is the soul of the originals that count, like with Slash.

What is the reason Axl and the band are not releasing new music?

It makes me consider Slash and Duff have no saying in the decisions in GNR.

They should close the cycle with an ultimate GNR album with Izzy Stradlin.

Maybe they are concerned that you won't like the new songs because they don't have Izzy on them?

Hahahaha

Thank you for not kicking me out of this website for my cold raw maybe disrespectful opinions.

I like this site, it is a bit slow at the moment, but I guess that is the repercussion of the influence of Facebook use.

God bless you, all.

Sorry again for disrespecting people here.

Brother, Jarmo never kicked me out.  Or even threatened.

And that last few years of the 'Chinese Democracy' misadventure, I was absolutely the type of kid the teachers hated.  Ask any of the posters that were here with me during like 2012-2015.  I was a pain in his balls, straight up.

We went back and forth over a lot of stuff about the state of the band at that time.  Me and him directly.  It got heated at times.  But he never censored me, threatened me, or even told me I was on thin ice.

Jarmo is a very fair man.  Anyone that say different is full of shit.

WTF, Axl?

On those rare occasions when I think I should quit smoking, I think Axl quit.  Then I remind myself Dizzy did too but he went back to smoking.  :hihi:  Seriously, remember when Axl thought he could drink?  Smacked his ass on a table and got arrested in Sweden.  Something about Europe, Axl lets go of the reins.

But there's nothing new out there. in that 1st 2006 eddie trunk interview he even said he didn't drink  because it affected his performances or something like that but, like u said, he actually drank his ass off    .

Exactly what is fake in that picture?

I'm willing to believe the half a cig is fake.  Kind of strange he would have one of those in his mouth.  When there is no ashtray and you don't want to leave it on the ground, I knock off the fire and stick it in my back pocket.  Or if I'm going to finish it off, it stays in the fingers.  I can still carry shit.  Up to him if he makes the choice to smoke but if he goes back to using one of those holders I'm going to think he's a pussy.  :hihi:  He can smoke the occasional cigar and have no problem with me but you know I'm going to laugh.

Exactly what is fake in that picture?

Looks like the usual "Axl signing something for a fan" photo that's been altered to add a cigarette, a drink and food while removing a pen etc. And yet you think it's all 100% authentic?

I thought you'd been a round for long enough to be able to spot an obvious fake photo like this by now. When was the last time you saw a photo of him smoking a cigarette like that?

Jeez.

You've got to admit that rapper picture of Axl was pretty entertaining.   :hihi:  What's the issue with the food?  Pretty normal for somebody to eat.

Axl is looking really good.  Styling it, running his ass off on stage and voice sounds good.  He's laughing and smiling.  Warms my heart he has found happiness.  It's a good picture even though it's been fucked with.

The fact is that I dont care. It's not a picture where he's raping or killing someone. there's nothing wrong with that picture. To me it could have been real, cause there's nothing surreal in that picture he smokes, drinks and eats  like everyone else. There are tones of picture of him and that fuckin redbull tin can, but there is only one picture of him taking shots in israel (who would have imagined! he drinks!!) , so i suppose that's a fake picture, right   ? And Tbh at first i didnt even notice the food even if it's right in the foreground I admit that would have been a red flag   :hihi:

I've been "fooled" cause he drinks and eats and maybe he smokes? Ok man   :peace::. I didnt know he was a breatharian that don't do those sad barbaric things

I would want to go home after weeks of being on the road.  Axl doesn't seem to be one of those people that has a home.  Houses but they are more like all inclusive resorts he spends some time at.

"Did you say your name was Ramblin Rose?

Ramble on Rose."

I wonder if this is the case. I'm still surprised it hasn't made an appearance. Does anyone know if it was ever soundchecked/shown as an alternate on a setlist?

He could always take some freedom with it as Slash does with the solos on CD songs.

Big time.

Slash could have very easily said "yeah, I'm not playing that shit" and I don't know who could have blamed him.  (though I don't think it's a coincidence they just about never play 'I.R.S')

Let's be real.  We all saw those NITL shows, a lot of us more than once.  What were the songs that got the least reaction?

Slash agreeing to do that was obviously an olive branch to Axl.  Which, at the end of the day, has served all we fans quite well the past 7 years.

Don't damn me would be quite easy to sing for Axl. No screams but for a couple of verses at the end. And it is one song that every fan wants them to play live at least once. Common Axl, Duff and Slash have already mini - soundchecked it last year.
Throw in Breakdown too please.

Remember 'Moneyball'?

Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and Ron Washington (Brent Jennings) are trying to convince Scott Hattenberg (Chris Pratt) to switch from catcher to first base to prolong his career.

Hattenberg  "The things is..."
Beane : "You don't know to how to play first base, right?  It's not that hard, Scott.  Tell him, Wash."
Washington : "It's incredibly hard."

That's how I feel here.  1992 Axl would struggle with 'Don't Damn Me' live.  2023 Axl would have zero shot.

It's incredibly hard.

They are the two songs I would love them to introduce in their live shows and I don't think they would be difficult for Axl to sing live. Easier than You Could Be Mine or Coma surely

You Could be mine is not hard, only the second bridge close to the end. It's just 30 seconds and Axl doesn't really pronounce the words anyway...

Coma is hard as fuck, specially the last 2'30". But there's a 5 second break for him between "While you watch 'em waving goodbye
and "They be calling in the morning, they be hanging on the phone...and that kind makes it a bit easier.

Don't damn me is harder though. It's a 5 min song. And there's hardly any room to breathe. Just a solo in the middle, but other than that, you have to be on the top of your lungs throughout.

I seem to remember Axl saying he regretted writing it at the pitch it’s at because it actually requires a lot of effort to sing, which is why they opened with it when they did the high altitude concert Jarmo was posting about recently.

Axl has laid down some truly incredibly demanding vocals.  And CRUSHED them.  They are all timers, but then people expect it the rest of your life.  It's a tough gig.

'You Could Be Mine' is such an incredible rock vocal.  Such presence, such tone, such attitude.  He sells that whole thing with such bravura, it's like a weapon.

Not just any rock front man makes that song what it is.

Singing in a high register requires much more air moving through your vocal cords than singing in a low register. Don't Damn Me would be a piece of cake compared to Coma.

Axl should do a couple of those radio spots.  He was really good as a DJ in that video game.  Not an interview but just show up and talk about whatever and play some tunes.  He could be Wolfie's guess or better yet,  just give the man the mic and an hour and let him introduce songs.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa reveals his rock star persona as the King of Atlantis, which was inspired by the legendary Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

“I built Aquaman a little bit off of Slash. Look at the first Justice League,” Momoa said during his guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I’m like, ‘That’s Slash.’ I mean, how do you dress up like you’re playing Aquaman? You’re not going to put him in a polo and some khakis. He was just rocking. The way that Zack [Snyder] designed him, wanted him to be was that he was rock ‘n’ roll. He punched Superman in the face and kissed Wonder Woman. He didn’t care.”

Somebody close to the band said that wasn't true but the hang up on announcing a tour has something to do with the bass player.

Two really decent episodes in regards to Music, the fourth episode covers Guitar making legends and the Sixth is pretty in depth with Slash, where the Appetite and Jessica guitars that he's retired from touring get replicas, one of each for the Axeman and the other two to be auctioned of for MusiCare a charity Slash is involved with.

When Guns N’ Roses signed to Geffen Records on March 26, 1986, for an estimated $250,000, no one could imagine that less than three years later the band would be one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. Many speculated that Geffen would never even recoup its initial advance payment of approximately $37,000 to the irresponsible, drug-addled degenerates.

Considering the number of movies that get released every year, and the number with actual GN'R songs in them, yes that's correct most of the time.

If someone had asked if there would be any GN'R in the Thor movie two years ago, most would've said "no" as well.... But that time there was!  :hihi:

There's always history!

Did you know that on June 11th, 1991, GN'R played the Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, PA? Then went back and played that same place in 2017, 2021 and 2023.

Oh yeah I suck at GNR history.  Good news is we're half way through the year and they may start announcing next year's tour dates in a couple of months.

Hershey you say.   :D  Sounds like a road trip I would enjoy!  Thanks for the suggestion.  Amy, what do you think?

Also on this day in 2006, GN'R headlined the Download Festival in the UK. Izzy and Sebastian Bach joined the band on stage.

And in 2012, GN'R played in Strasbourg, France. The first and only time GN'R has played there.

On June 11th, 2022, they headlined the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg, Sweden.

Aside from saying 2025 is all about Guns, Slash also said he heard a rumor that there will a small tour during the summer.

The man is keeping busy that's for sure. After the Serpent Tour he's recording another Conspirators album and then it's G n' R from there. Here's hoping that happens.

Comment from Traci Guns
https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/tracii_guns_recalls_first_impression_of_axl_rose_says_process_behind_chinese_democracy_is_more_interesting_than_the_album_itself.html

The guitarist also praised Axl's efforts on the equally legendary and notorious "Chinese Democracy" record, arguing that the story behind it is more interesting than the album itself:

"I really love the whole process of 'Chinese Democracy' more than the album. The process was brilliant because, you have this kind of Howard Hughes guy, spending Geffen's dough and experimenting. Axl was really learning how to play guitar during those times as well... So, to me, that was like a great privilege for him to go through this creative process for years, and satisfy all his itches."

He added:

"None of us musicians that are any good are mentally stable. You don't become an extraordinary person in any way by being together, right? So with him, it's so great because he did that. He went out there, he toured it. He made a lot of other guys famous because he picked really good guys who could stand on their own two feet, which is very difficult... Buckethead, Bumblefoot, DJ Ashba — he brought all these people into the limelight, and, at that point, it's up to them whether they sink or swim, because they had the best frontman they're ever going to have."

But in a way it is. It's bigger than many festivals, but it's another festival.

I mean, every region has their own special festival that means a lot. You have Glastonbury in the UK, Rock In Rio in Brazil is huge there, Coachella is a big deal in the US etc.

Pinkpop is legendary in the Netherlands, Roskilde in Scandinavia etc.

The Isle of Wight is a big deal in the UK, 2nd to Glasto, but nonetheless tends to get its own weekend of filming on Sky Art.

https://www.prints4u.net/product/isle-of-wight-festival-2024-the-prodigy-pet-shop-boys-green-day-line-up-poster-print/

This year it was Prodigy, Pet Shop Boys and Green Day headlining, it has the same kind of mix as Glasto too. This is the festival they should do in 2025 to complete the set. I know John Giddens, promoter,  is keen.

MONDAY, JULY 10 - NURNBERG - FRANKENSTADION

But those shows were cancelled after Keith Richards' accident in Fiji. GN'R played in Greece and Turkey instead.

Why Axl Rose thought Tipper Gore “hindered” his career

https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/axl-rose-tipper-gore-hindered-career/

I was just thinking about Tipper Gore the other day.  God was she a scary woman.   :hihi:  I remember when all of that was going on I got a call from their efforts.  The woman was outraged about it and when I told her I wasn't concerned about it and said goodbye, she said I was an idiot or something like that, because my young daughter was still listening on the other line.

Have to wonder what she thought of Frank Zappa.   :hihi:

Had to laugh at googles GNR news.  The top three stories are about Axl being a bad boy.  I don't think that image is ever going to go away.  They want that from him.

Anyway, I've been checking GNR news thinking ticket sales might start showing up.  I don't have a real good feel for how far out they announce ticket sales before a band starts touring.  I'm thinking it's too late for any kind of tour in the first quarter of next year.

I think when there's any announcement from GN'R, it'll be posted on social media and fan sites. You won't miss it...

When tour dates get announced depends on many things. If it's a festival show for example, then it's up to the festival. If you remember the London show last year, it was announced on its own without any other dates, which probably made some assume there would only be one show in Europe.

The 2016 summer tour was announced in April.

The 2023 summer tour was announced in February.

Yes, he can drag it out.     Two albums at the same time is nothing new.  Additional new songs that are Duff and Slash songs and not NewGNR, well time has moved on and they are back, to be expected.  Didn't address the problem that has been there for years, is the record label going to let them put it out?  You know we've heard this all before, it's just updated.  The band is on target and something happens, ie the label, and it stalls out.

Does Axl have to sing any cover note for note?  Don't forget Axl's comment about listening to a lot of Wings.

Yes, I believe the guy.  Wish he'd get to the point faster.  It's all really familiar with how things have gone before but it never got out the door.

It's all fun n' games coming up with possible scenarios. Like this one. You have the songs that were already written, but remain unreleased, and you have Duff and Slash in the band. maybe it's just a problem with distribution via Amazon then, but some people got noticed
it won't be available before October 8, and on amazon.com the release date is 4.oct.

Yeah. Could be physical copies....

Especially vinyls are often delayed.

Collector or hoarder mentality?   :hihi:  I had a mild panic attack.

He's not wrong. Especially today.

I've played guitars across the range of prices.  From 40k to $200.

Back in the 90's, I could pick up a $5000 guitar and a $300 guitar, and instantly know the difference by feel.  Not just the fit and finishes, but the actual feel of the frets (burrs, etc) and the rosewood/ebony/whetever on the neck. The weights were different.  The balance was different.  Sure, the $5000 guitar looked nicer, too (usually), but you could pretty much do it blindfolded.  You could feel it in the tuners and you could HEAR it in the pickups.  And vintage was worth it, because there was a definitive sound difference you could play with....that you could feel coming out of your strings/amp.

Today?  Not so much.  There are manufacturers out there (Thomann with the Harley Bentons, for example) that are pulling off some amazing guitars for practical pennies.  And they can copy vintage styles and pickups so convincingly that, while absolutely NOT 100% the same, they are so close that you look at the THOUSANDS (and sometimes TENS of THOUSANDS) of dollars in price difference....and it's hard to justify the higher priced guitar as anything other than as a "collectible" (unless you're someone like Slash, and the minute difference is made more definitive by your craft and expertise).  And thats fine.  But then you move on from thinking of those vintage and high end guitars as instuments you want to play, for their different acoustic properties, and start thinking of them as art you want on your wall, or an investment.  And that's a whole different consideration.

Keep in mind, I'm not talking about Chibsons here, where they are cheaping out on components and labor (though some of those solid body Chibsons, with some bench time, are not bad!).  I'm talking about the more reputable manufacturers out there who are just doing a LOT more with a LOT less.  Heck, I ran into a Les Paul knock off from MONOPRICE (yeah, the people that make cables!) that was pretty impressive given it's $250 price point.  I hated the head stock (though kudos to them for not flat out copying the les paul stock, I guess)....but it felt and played otherwise like a mid range les paul that cost 10x the price (and way better than any epiphone les paul I've ever handled).

All this to say:  The gap between high end and budget just continues to narrow, as Slash implies.  And the gap between mid-range and high end is so paper thin, to me, its almost not perceptable.  And vintage is basically becoming collectible art, because technology has basically let us copy any sound from any era, convincingly, and at a very low buy in cost.

Anyone tried Epiphone Slash Appetite Burst? Is it any good? I play myself on Epiphone Les Paul Muse, not bad at all and I think it's worth the money I'd paid for. I played classic Stratocaster for years and it was good as well but decided to try an Epiphone. Now I'm thinking of buying something new and wondering around. Not playing professionally although I have some small gigs here and there.

PS. Sorry for the offtopic.

PS. Sorry for the offtopic.

The Burst isn't bad (just avoid it's lower priced brother "Appetite Amber").

I have a few complaints but given the price point.....they're probably nitpicky.

I don't love the pickups (I think they're the Epiphone Probuckers...I think the 2s, not the 3s?).  They're not the Gibsons (yeah, I know....that's why they make the Gibson Standard Burst) and it shows, to me. They're just a little too bright.  Easy to fix with some bench time, and not all that expensive an upgrade, but...that's kind of the point.  I feel like they could have thrown in the better pickups at the same price point ($999 MSRP in the US).

The neck is kind of bendy, in a bad way. I don't know how to explain it. Not a "willowy" bend like a single piece gives you. Since it's not a solid piece, and especially when you're bending strings, you can feel the give a little bit, in a bad way, at the heel especially.  Some people actually like this.  It makes me nervous.

The switches and knobs feel cheap.  I mean, it is an epiphone.  It is made in China.  So that's pretty much par for the course.  But I don't know if I would ever want to gig with this guitar because I suspect that kind of use would wear some of the components out super quick.  Again, some bench time and you could replace the components pretty easily and not spend a lot to do it.

Some things to note:

It's the C shaped neck, not the 50's style.  That might matter to you if you want the authentic feel of what Slash is actually playing.

Its a double segment (not single piece) body, but I don't notice a big sonic difference from it.

The head stock is a little different than the standard.

The frets are sharp, out of the case, for the Epiphone (and no edge binding for them).  Again, a good set up and some wear will fix this....but be careful when you first rip into it...or it will rip into you!

For me....I'd pick it up on sale (you can find it as low as $720 US) and then put the $250 or so back into it with new pickups, upgrade the electronics, and have a good setup (with some fret edge filing!) done to it and it would be a LOT better than it is off the shelf.  And you could gig with it, with the upgrades, I think.

The only thing you can't really "fix" is the neck stability and I think that's just up to personal choice and play style.

Hope that helps!

Thanks man, really useful. Appreciated. I'm not looking for a Slash sound just want to try something different than the Epiphone Muse I currently play on. I do think that I can find a similar price guitar without the need of changing and amending anything in this case which may sound better. Of course it depends on what sound I'm looking for which is actually the problem because I'm still not really sure.  ;D. Anyways, thanks for the review once again.

They are SO similar.  The pickups are different (and I like the Alnico Classics in the Muse a little better...they sound warmer to me).  The wood type is different and the Muse is a lighter.  But other than consmetics and the type of wood they use.....I'm not sure it's worth the $$?  Just my humble opinion?  You're putting down a decent chunk of cash for what I would say is a marginal upgrade....with a lot of the same down sides that most epiphones have (aka tuning them CONSTANTLY).

The Slash version probably has more upside if you were to bench it, just because then you're stripping down to the body/neck material, which is the real upgrade.  But off the shelf?  I would have to play one and make the decision if it was worth it to me.  Depends on how much you like your Muse.  If you really love it....nah.

Save the cash and start looking for a used 2010ish Gibson Standard.  I've seen them as low as 1500 in good shape. Troll some pawn shops and you might even find one for less than that.

Yeah, that was my point. No need to spend the amount of money for the Slash version if it needs amendment and more or less sounds similar to my Muse. I love my Muse but I'm looking for soemthing different and from your recommendation the Slash version won't do the thing for me. Will look around for something different but still need to be clear with myself what exactly I want to hear as a sound.

The Isle of Wight festival is shortly releasing the first traunce of announcements of acts playing next year. As I have dreamed of them playing at my home, of course I've always hoped they'd do that. Somethings odd this year, as with lots of festivals they send out emails with various bits of info including surveys.  The IW festival surveys normally contain suggestive acts and you tick the ones you'd like to see. The last one contained GnR and the last time they did that was 2015 just before  the NITL tour was announced in 2016.

Now something has piqued my interest in this. Were SOLO, promoters of the IW Festival in talks with GnR management at the time? And mores the point, have they been in talks recently? I can only hope. Roll on Monday  :)

I hope they plan on something traditional. Single, album announcement, tour announcement, album release, tour.

Could be the facebook page for the venue?  Not sure.  Why, is something making it look like just a fan page to you?  I'm not a facebook user unless I'm looking for GNR streams.

It seems to me tickets would have already been on sale for these but then again I don't know how that usually happens down there.  Then again I was expecting Europe tickets for next summer to start popping up right about now.

Exactly. No announcement from any reputable source (media, promoter, GN'R!).

In the past, someone (venue, promoter, local radio station) would tease something. Then you'd get an official show/tour announcement from the band, promoter and it would be reported by the media. GN'R's social media accounts would post about it, the dates would be on the official site and probably posted here too.

None of this has happened. Instead someone's created events on Facebook.
