Title: Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: Bucketofguns on October 21, 2003, 09:06:35 PM
Since I already have every album, the GH would have to have atleast one new song, and a huge 50 page plus booklet with free pullout poster.  No way in hell I will shell out 15 bucks for repackaged songs, with a page of notes done by some minor magazine editor.

It would have to have a new song.

I'd just buy it because I'm a fan and I collect GN'R music and memorabilia.

No conditions, i'd buy it the day it came out, and i also have all the albums, but i dont care, as long as i got another new GNR item to buy i will right away.  and personally i was happy about the greatest hits coming out, and am pissed its cancelled, unless chinese democracy has nething to do with it, then im happy it got cancelled.

I would buy a greatest hits album if  it came with a GN'R biography, stories behind each song, press on tatoos, stories of their early gigs, lyrics to unreleased songs, and a definite date of when Chinese Democracy will be released.
Just kidding about the tatoos.

I rarely ever buy greatest hits albums by any that I really like, i.e. artists whose albums I already have.  The only exception is if it contains unreleased tracks or very interesting liner notes.

I'd buy it no matter what.  I wouldn't be able to stand not having it.  Although, I didn't buy that UYI cd that combined songs from I and II... :-\

Title: Re:Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: echrisl on October 22, 2003, 12:30:43 AM
I'd buy it if:

1.  There was a good quality unreleased track that I don't have or don't have as good a quality version of.

2.  A VERY interesting booklet, although if this was the only reason I bought it it would have to be a personal letter to me from Axl or something equally earth-shattering.

Other than that, forget it.

I agree, although I DID buy Use Your Illusion.  Man, what a retarded track listing...'Dead Horse' was one of the 5 best songs on UYI1?  'Coma' anyone?

Ummm..... I think that CD is just an edited version.... notice the lack of swearing in all the songs on there? That's for the kiddies.  You Could Be Mine isn't on there either is it?

Anyways, Coma is shit.

If it included fifteen new songs and Rocket Queen.

Title: Re:Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: metallex78 on October 22, 2003, 02:50:37 AM
I agree, it would have to have at least one new song, some rare unreleased or demo tracks and some cool booklet artwork and liner notes.

I'm not really into box sets repackaging existing albums that I already own.
Allot bands release box sets like that, but what fan would buy them???  If they are already a fan of the band, chances are they'd already have the original albums.

I love the song coma...  BUT I think the sound effects and voice effects and people talking ruined the studio version of the song.   :-\

Estranged is a perfect song.   : ok:

I agree, it would have to have at least one new song, some rare unreleased or demo tracks and some cool booklet artwork and liner notes.

That's a great idea.  I'd buy it in a second if it contained any kind of unreleased material.   :D

But a greatest hits CD with 5 cover songs?  FUCK THAT!

Title: Re:Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: St.heathen on October 22, 2003, 09:23:32 AM
I would definatly buy it, no doubt.  I dont understand how anyone could put their time and energy into a site about a band that has released next to nothing for 10 years, then when something is announced (ok it's not a new album but its still something GNR have not yet released)   but people go all negative.

Now fair enough if your not going to buy it. But why make a fuss when others will enjoy it ? At the end of the day some of us have been waiting for such along time. I for one am glad that the dvds are coming, a hits cd aslo - can only refresh peoples mind about GNR.

GNR have real music fan bases who collect, so it will be a new part of the collection and generally people like Greatest hits. So aslong as it is done well then excellent. Look at the Pistols they only did one propper album and they  also have a greatest hits cd out. It's just the way the music industry goes innit?  i hope all you miserable basterds lol dont get your way and get it stopped.

Just think, maybe buying it may just stop you from funding the record label but on the other hand it would give the press the chance to say theres no interest in gnr anymore...... im onside anyway.

Title: Re:Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: jarmo on October 22, 2003, 09:50:14 AM
I'd buy it at some point, even if it didn't have any previously unreleased tracks. I probably wouldn't run out and buy it the first day, I'd probably wait until it was on sale.

But if they released a GH/Best Of with one or more previously unreleased track(s), I'd buy it ASAP.

Title: Re:Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: 2NaFish on October 22, 2003, 09:54:36 AM
If it had something which hadn't been officially released on it i'd probably get it straight away - if it was just a collection of previously released songs i'd get it when it was in a sale for a fiver or something.

But i'd have to get it eventually.

Title: Re:Under what conditions would you buy a greatest hits album
Post by: 5thofwhiskey on October 22, 2003, 10:33:07 AM
Now the track listing they had was for the most part a Hits CD.

I only would have bought it right away if it included some new tracks.

something like this:

1. Welcome To The Jungle (Billboard #7)
2. Sweet Child O' Mine (Billboard #1 + Gold single)
3. Patience (Billboard #4 + Gold single)
4. Paradise City (Billboard #5)
5. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Top 100)
6. Civil War (Top 100)
7. You Could Be Mine (Billboard #9 + Gold Single)
8. Don't Cry (Billboard #10 + Gold Single)
9. November Rain (Billboard #3 + Gold Single)
10. Live and Let Die (Billboard Top 40)
11. Yesterdays (Billboard Top 40)

12. New Song or Old Unreleased
13. New Song or Old Unreleased
14. New Song or Old Unreleased

New songs that would have been cool are of course Chinese Democracy, Madagascar, and The Blues. This only if they were not to be on the new album.

Unreleased songs could have been anything that the originals did from the 94' - 96' recording era. If there was anything at all. Who knows if there could have been at least 3 songs done before they quit. Or stuff like a remastered Crash Diet or that live version of Dust in the Wind. Those are both great songs and I can not believe they were never capatilized on them.

Most want things like Brownstone, Nighttrain and Estranged on a hits album. Well that is good, but you can only fit so much on a single CD. Somethings have to be sacraficed. I would rather have the true "Hits" on and 3 new songs on rather than the three above listed.

And I agree with all that the rumored last three songs Since I don't have You, Ain't it Fun and SFTD was stupid. But really it was the only stupid part of the listing. The rest was common sense.

They could also release a "Greatest Hits" without any unreleased tracks on it, but have a 2CD edition for the hardcore fans with live tracks, demos and stuff like that. ;)

Very true.............now if they did that then NT,Bst, and Est could be the last three tracks. or maybeeee they could go with the rumored last three songs and a number 2 CD would make up for the damage.

It would have to have a new song.

It`s not possible to have a greatest hits album featuring a new song. It kind of defeats the object in my mind  :)

Last christmas *ELV1S 30 #1 HITS* was released. It contained 1 extra/bonus track called: alittle less conversation [JXL Radio Edit Remix] - so that made it 31 tracks in total on one cd (why not simply stick with 30 tracks?).

Can you image "here`s GNR`s greatest hits, we thought we bung on a dodgy previously unreleased live version of Paradise City, just so we could shift afew more copies to you sucks, oops, i mean fans!" ;)

I'm gonna buy it dispite's it less than interesting track listing.

5 covers, why not not classics such as Rocket Queen, Nightrain, Mr. BrwonStone, Don't Damn me, Coma ect.

A remastered version of Crash Diet, Shadow of Love or  Ain't Going Down would be sweet.

As for Sympathy for the Devil, fuck where do I start. It just boils my blood knowing that that little fucking RAT paula huge is once getting his name affiliated with this band.

He can have all of the credit he's entitled to with Axl's new band, I could care less. However to associate him with Slash and company,

I'll buy it, cause frankly some of my older Gn'R cd's have taken a beating over the years and are starting to skip. So this saves me from buying all of the cd's again for a little while anyway. Plus It's a new GnR release, I buy everyother piece of shit that floats down the river with their name on it, I acctually have a autographed letter of thanks from Gilby and Traci Guns for being one of the 11 people who bought their Rock and Roll tribute to Guns N Roses.

Regardless of the lables intent, this GH's will get Guns N' Roses name back out there........I can already here the collective voices of HTGTH building in unison "But the new line up needs to distinguish themselves from the old band......how does this help"

After the ten year wait, the aborted 2002 tour, and the fact that Axl is going to get negative press for pursuing a lawsuit over this (if he infact does).......Nothing will ever save the integrity of this new line up. And face it, Chinese Democracy will spend more time in a vault than Brian Wilsons' Smile album.....so this Greatest Hits album is the least of Axl and Circe De So Lame's (new line up for those who can't follow) worries.

The questions is, how much do i like DEAD HORSE, it`s better then the worst tracks on UYI I and worst than the bes songs on UYI I (i think the word i`m looking for is AVERAGE ;) ) - dose the defect warant buying a new copy of UYI I?  :)

- It must contain all of the best songs. 2 cd set surely.
- There should be live and unrelased songs in it. (Like Skid Row's or FNM's)
- Less covers. Smth not familiar like KOHD. Like Ac-Dc's Whole Lotta Rosie
- Remastered and re-mixed maybe.
