I think most of them went to auditions I'm not sure how they got the word around and how they got in contact I do remember Axl was really interested in Buckethead though

According to Spin magazine:

ROBIN FINCK, lead guitar: Finck is no stranger to the circus-Matt Sorum found him playing with Cirque Du Soleil. "I told Axl to see him and he said, 'That's our guitar player,"' says Sorum. "I said, 'Bring in Robin to play alongside Slash,' but Axl said, 'I want him to play lead."'

TOMMY STINSON, bass: The former Replacements bassist "hadn't worked in a long time" when Rose called, according to a source close to Stinson. "Tommy didn't get nickel one from the Replacements," the source says. -[So] he bought a used copy of Appetite, and learned the bass lines."

TAGW: How did you get hooked up with Guns n? Roses?

Richard: After years of their begging, pleading and general groveling, I finally succumbed and joined the band. Okay, okay?I had done a few sessions with Tommy Stinson (bassist from The Replacements) and Brain (ex-drummer from Primus). Tommy and I had been pretty good friends for awhile so when they were looking for someone, Tommy called and asked if I wanted to audition. At the time I was on the road in Europe so I had to fly from London to L.A. and then back to Ireland during a two day break. Got off the plane and went straight to the audition and then got back on a plane!

I doubt Axl wanted Robin to play lead over Slash. It was probably a similar case to when Zakk briefly joined the band, they would have both played lead.

Yeah, I guess it's pretty obvious right now (because they had 3 guitars). But Sorum said in that way to make like Axl was searching for Slash's replacement even before his departure.
Anyways, I read somewhere (maybe in the same magazine or in Axl's 2002 statement ) that Fortus could take Buckethead's place as the 3rd guitar player with Finck and Paul Tobias, but then BH joined the band. He was called to play in the band when Paul Tobias was leaving the band.

In a nutshell aside from Robin, Tommy and Pittman all the members have known each other and when the time came up they suggested the players to Axl and hence the band evolved.

Fortus was originally going to be the lead guitar player with Robin, but then Axl discovered Buckethead, from Brain. Then later down the road he was aksed if he wanted to still play with the band as rhythm.
