Live!! From Burning Hills, Wellington...

« on: April 10, 2006, 05:38:35 AM »

In the RS interview in January, Axl listed Better, The Blues and TWAT as his favourites.
Can we now assume that these are the rumoured 'Big Guns'?

If so, I'm a tad worried. Don't get me wrong, I think those 3 songs are great.

-TWAT has amazing potential but needs a major reworking. Add some orchestration, ditch the electronica, sort out the structure (especially the outro which is a mess) and you've got a great song.

- The Blues, as has been stated countless times, is a classic in waiting. The arrangment and parts sound completed, we have a gorgeous melody and some nice guitar flourishes. A real heartfelt, yet precise Axl epic. All it needs is a polished studio vocal performance. Of all the songs, to me this is the only one that I would consider a 'big gun'.

- Better worries me a little. Great rockin song, but again, too much dated electronica. It sounds like something from the nu-metal era.

Surely Axl has some bigger guns up his sleeve? But yet he states these 3 are his favs. Was it a throwaway comment and these were the 3 that came to mind on the spur of the moment? When IRS leaked last year, I believe there was a statement made to the effect that it wasn't considered to be in the top 10.

It just seems a little odd to me that Axl mentions these 3 songs that we've all now heard. Taste is subjective, but this 'earth shattering' sound has yet to emerge in what we've heard thus far IMO

in the rolling stone article it is written that "among" his favs are better, twat and blues!

besides: i really do think that better is an amazing song with the potential of an all time classic  (hope that more melodies like that inside of axl "search for solution"!)

Yeah, I think those are the Big Guns, but surely there could be more. But like you said, these are not 'earth shattering' in any way, shape, or form. Some of these songs are incredible, but they sure as hell dont shatter planets. In my opinion, anyone that doesn't like these new songs isn't going to like the album.

Like you said, we've already heard Axl's 3 favorite songs. If he had a 'Kashmir' or something similar in the vault, surely it would rank up there with those 3 songs. But maybe the final versions of those songs are earth shattering. The Blues and CITR definitely have that potential.

This is why the album should not have been hyped for so many years. It created unrealistic expectations. The positive thing to come out of these leaks is that it brought the expectations down to a realistic level.

its sad but true.
and if the rest of the songs are so earthshattering, why would it take them so long to put out the album.

a great song is a great song, no matter how studio tweeked it is

You guys hyped it up yourselves. I come on here as much as the next guy for over 4 years now, and I still think that these new songs are fantastic. They are what I have been waiting for. They are better than anything else that I have heard in I dont know how many years. You guys just got this ridiculous impression that this was gonna change the fucking world. Its music man. Its all about taste. I have not been disappointed at all. If anything, its just making me anticipate the album even more, can't wait to have this thing in my hands.

i assume that axl didn't want to mention too many song titles that we did'nt know... and/or the interviewer selected those song titles which were well known among gnr fans and rs journalist (blues / twat were alreadfy mentioned in rs in 99 or 00);

besides, on the tour 02 axl did not regard "blues" as a big gun ("still holding big guns back").

Wrong. Axl, Tommy, and Dizzy have hyped this thing for years.

These may be the big guns or may not be either way it doesn't mean it will be our favorite songs.  The Blues and Better are great but I wouldn't be surprised if we don't like Prostitute or This I Love (if it is on the album) just as much.  Remember these are Axl's faves, don't mean it will be the best to us.

Axl and company are the ones who have  been hyping us for years with Chinese Democracy, time to put it out while someone still cares.

Yeah, but he would  have to be an idiot  to say, "Ok, you've been waiting 10 years and here are the three songs (Blues, Maddy, CD) that I have written. And then Dizzy wrote a piece  of shit called Silkworms but I have nothing else so we  will play it."

Get real.
