VELVET REVOLVER Guitarist: Working With BRENDAN O'BRIEN Is 'Just What We Needed' - Nov. 19, 2006

VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Dave Kushner has posted the following message on the Velvet Revolver Forum:

"I know it's been a while since I checked in, but I keep waiting for my site to be done in hopes of posting there but.... Ahhh, never mind!! I wanna thank all of you on the forum for the birthday wishes! It's really nice to see.

"As for the birthday itself, it was great!! Got to play with CAMP FREDDY [Thursday] night [Nov. 16] at this crazy, multimedia shindig in Hollywood. My best friend Scott Shriner brought me up a cake onstage that my wife arranged, and everyone sang 'Happy birthday.' All my band was there too. It was really cool.

"Speaking of the band... As you know, we're working with Brendan O'Brien [on the second VELVET REVOLVER album] now. He's awesome! Just what we needed. He's really workin us good! Hopefully we'll actually start trackin the record in the next month. It'll be worth the wait. Hopefully all of you out there will think so when you get it."

O'Brien has produced or mixed most of the major rock bands of the past 20 years, including PEARL JAM, SOUNDGARDEN, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and AUDIOSLAVE. "Things are moving quick now, and we are all very excited," drummer Matt Sorum said in a recent online posting. "Rome was not built in a day so I believe everyone will be very happy when [the new CD is] finished."

VELVET REVOLVER's sophomore album has a working title of "Libertad". The band's 2004 debut, "Contraband", was certified double-platinum for sales in excess of two million copies in the United States.

I think it's unfortunate that they dont have a producer with the credentials to actually push them to their realizable potential.  Dropping another CD of mediocre music doesnt justifiably speak for the talent of which some (not all) of the members possess.  Get a producer with real talent thats not just out to make a buck.

You obviously don't know who Brendan O'Brien is. confused Do some research.  And no, ALL the band members are quite talented.

Was kinda looking forward to them working with Rubin, but we would probably be in for a longer wait so I am glad they are getting the ball rolling now.

For those who don't know, myself included, what does "trackin' the record" mean.

Is that a fancy way of saying "recording the actual songs instrument by instrument"?

I think so.

Start with the drums an bass, then the rhythm guitars, then the almighty Slash lays down some killer leads, then Scott puts some random lyrics down, and there you have it - a new album!

Sounds pretty easy huh? ok

I love Rick Rubin, but I gotta say, Audioslave sounded much better with Brendan.

It'll be interesting to see what O'Brien can contribute to this band. Always been a fan of STP...I think he's going to bring the best out of Scott Weiland (highly missed in Contraband).

If I'm not mistaken, this is the process the Illusion albums went by-I remember Duff saying he and Matt had laid down the bass and drum parts right away-then came the rest-Matt and Duff have a great chemistry. If I'm not mistaken, Slash also said in Estranged he was inspired by the piano part of the song for his guitar part-I think different bands do it different ways
