Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else but this has always bugged me. I love Dizzy and his playing both studio and live. But does anyone know why he only plays keys on about less than half of the Illusion albums and The Spaghetti Incident.

I know that the bulk of the Spaghetti tracks were layed down during the Illusion sessions and Gilby mostly re-recorded Izzy's tracks. I've just always wondered why as Dizzy joined just before Matt and Matt had time to do or redo the drum parts to the Illusion records, why Dizzy plays as little as he does on these albums.

Perhaps because not all the songs have keyboards on them..

Most of them did tho. November Rain, Estranged have Axl on Piano. From memory Axl does keys and effects on Garden Of Eden and My World. Howard someone plays piano on So Fine. Theres an uncredited piano playing on Heavens Door.

And even songs like Don't Cry that don't have keys on the album, Dizzy played keys on beautifully live.

And you can clearly add parts and variation to a song from how it was written. Guns started off as a two guitaisted, no keyboard five piece. Now theyre an eight piece with three guitarists and two keyboardists.

Yeah, I think it comes down to not all the songs having keys on them. Also as someone already said, alot of the piano and keyboard parts were played by Axl on the albums anyway. And with the Spaghetti Incident?, being a punk rock tribute, Dizzy wasn't going to feature heavily on there anyway. But live Dizzy does add keyboards to guitar driven songs, and I must say he does a great job and it sounds awesome.  Cool

Many bands incorporate keyboardist live but tend to hide them...Aerosmith are a rarity they have Russ Irwin as a 6th member adding keys, backing vocals, acoustic guitar and even bongs, all while incorporating a visible stage spot..

I was glad that Dizzy was all over Chinese Democracy playing on all but one song. Odd that Fortus only plays guitar on five tracks.

And whose to say Dizzy wasn't in the studio anyway when these were being recorded rockin out as he does in the Garden Of Eden video?! He was participating perhaps that way.
