i have a maximum of ?500 to spend on a guitar. is it really worth the extra ?150+ to spend on a gibson sg (and i wouldnt be able to get an amp if i spent that)? i've never owned an electric before so you can say "go and try it" but im not really sure what im looking for. i think les pauls look much better though.

Everything Louder Than Everything Else

Buy a Schecter C-1 or something.  Seymour Duncans, Grover Tuners, Tone-Pros bridge, mahogany body with solid maple cap, mahogany set neck.

Way, way better than anything Epiphone Korea put out.

Steven's drumming made the band; he made a big musical difference.  His sense of swing was the push and pull that gave those songs their feel, afterwards, nothing worked. ~ Izzy Stradlin

Out of the two options you gave, I would say go SG just for the long run, because you can always purchase the amp at a later date. You know I am sincere when I say this too because I am a Les Paul man myself Wink Haha.

i'm going to save you some money and you'll get a better guitar.

http://www.espguitars.co.jp/edwards/index.html

these guitars are the best gibson copies.  for the price of around $700 shipped you can get a brand new les paul copy which is the same quality as a gibson les paul standard which is $2000.

the specs blow away gibson's and i sell guitars for a living so i have lots of experiences handling guitars.

they also have copies of pretty much every major american brand and although you can't play before you buy it's worth it to get something same quality as gibson but you won't be paying the extra $500 for the headstock.

I have a Gibson Sg Special and I'm absolutely in love with it, and the only difference between a special and a standard is the covered pickups and the neck inlays, which isn't very much and will save you quite a bit of money.

Get a Fernandes Ravelle Dave Kushner signature.  Costs the same as an SG, but it has a very cool Les Paulish shape and an amazing sustainer system. This will help you if you want to sound like Slash on a cheap amp in your bedroom. +Not every other guitarist on the block will have one.
