I just decided to listen to some of the songs from Lisbon since I have been reading these negative reviews... I listened to SCOM and KOHD.... and yes, KOHD sounds like shit.  SCOM is pretty shitty as well.  Building on what people are saying I think what I am most dissapointed with is how the band has not really gone anywhere since they came back in Vegas.  Essentially the same set list, predictable stage show, they even wear the same clothes each show.  I went to the NY shows on the 14th, 15th, and 17th and I had a great time at all of them.  Even though pretty much the same songs were played they switched the set list up for each of them.

The show on the 17th was special because Izzy came out and Kid Rock came out.  It was totally unexpected and it threw everyone off.  In my mind that is what GNR has to be.  Whether its a random guest who comes out and plays or a strange song thrown in at every show, they NEED to do something like that to be fresh.  Even playing just one different UYI or Lies track at each show would be great.  Why does the Detroit show from 2002 stick out in everyone's mind??   Because they threw Rhiad into the setlist and it was the only time the band played that song on the entire U.S. tour.  The Sebastian Bach thing was cool at the NY shows, but he should not have been there every night.

Because Axl walked out after Patience.....that's why that show sticks out in everyone's mind.

Yes that is also true.  But that show is talked about more than most of the other shows on that tour for those reasons.  It was something different and unique to all the other shows.

My point is that everything is predictable. ?I think its cheesy that the band members have 'costumes' when they go onstage together. ?I know its awesome being able to write down the setlist and what clothes the band will be wearing on a piece of paper and take it to a show with you and the majority of those 'guesses' will be correct.

As long as they play some songs I dont really care what they wear and what order of the songs they do or whatever man..Im sorry...

I want a set list that pleases hardcore fans (new songs) but still pleases the majority dumbasses and with the exception of Don't Cry, the set list theyre doing now does just that!

Do you not think that they should throw something unique into each set they play?  Like I was saying, one UYI or Lies song that will only be played at that one show?  I think that would be more effective in pleasing the 'hardcore' fanbase and the majority.

Out ta get me is/was unique enough..Think about you also...they never did those songs before.

The majority doesnt give a fuck as long as they get the hits...and theres plenty of them.

I do agree about maybe replacing an AFD song with a Illusion song...but I dont wanna see Out ta get me go away since it completely rocks. They could do Dont Cry, but then they have to take out a ballad...cant have just slow songs either.

I dont think they will bother rehearsing new songs from Lies or Illusion. I bet the plan is to stick with the current list and replace songs with new ones when that time comes...

i doubt you're gonna get reviews from rolling stone and mtv...and if you do, prolly not til tuesday since its memorial day weekend, and everyone is off in the u.s.

anyway, i saw the show again today...and it was a lot better then trying to watch it in bits and pieces last night.

yeah, the audio sucked on most of the show, but the parts that were all there sounded great (nov rain, otgm, the finck/fortus solo, and ron thal's don't cry)

compared to rir3, the band sounded and looked 1000 times more in synch and played better from the audio that worked. axl sounded good, but he wasnt nearly as worked up as in 2001, apparently merck said something about muscle spasms and the soundboard blowing up, so with all that considered it was a great show. as for the set list, gn'r didnt get to go on til 12:15, and they came on like a 1/2 hour after the darkness so it wasnt their fault the show was runnning long, and im guessing they cut a couple new songs in order to get the show done by 2:30am, as for there being "too many solos" i think they showcase the new talent to people that havent had the chance to see the new gn'r yet, and also they kick ass.

IMO they can drop one of the guitar solos...and add another song instead.

Try not to be a smart arse, the point was proved, no need for sarcastic replies.

Funny how singing along to a song suddenly means "we want this song and we will be disappointed if we don't get it"

Can you speak for 50,000 (or was it even more) people, no you can't and neither can I.

But the fact that a large percentage of the crowd sang along the way they did during Bumblefoots solo implies they would of like to hear it.

OR they were just happy that he played it for them and sang along!!! are you fucking stupid?! gnr finally played a huge festival show last night and all you people manage to do is complain! i don't believe it! some of you people don't even deserve to be called fans!

Im 100% sure that if a UFO landed on stage, 4 aliens came out and sang "There was a time" with Axl Rose, some people here would be on the net the day afterwords and complain about the silver grey outfits the aliens from the planet of Cygnus X wore on stage because they simply did not look like Slash or had a basic rock outfit  ok

See its the 'fans' like you that bother me the most.  We are not complaining!  We are criticizing and pointing out specific things that the band can improve on.  Of course we are happy that GNR are back.  I dont think its such a bad thing to want the band to strive for more than what they are doing currently.  It makes me a bad fan because I want GNR to put on better shows??  Damn, I am an awful fan....

from the Rock in Rio Website :

                                                  A Guns N? Roses Apotheosis

Axl Rose conquered the 50 thousand people who made their way to the City of Rock to see him.

The last performance of the night on the World Stage had plenty of solos, changes of outfits and fireworks. Guns n? Roses? concert lacked nothing with Axl Rose proving that he is still one of the leading figures in international rock.

There were 8 musicians on stage but Axl Rose shone brighter than anyone else, actually coming near the audience several times.

He played the piano and indeed one of the highlights of the show was ?November Rain? when a curtain of fireworks swept the stage.

Other highlights came with two well-known songs ? ?Knocking on Heaven?s Door (original song by Bob Dylan) and ?Live and Let Die? (original song by Paul McCartney). The audience was in awe.

Following their announcement that the show was over, the band decided to grant the audience one last song and returned, ending the show with ?Paradise City? while images of the Portuguese flag shone on the giant screens.

Moments before, The Darkness had also taken a tour through ?classic? band such as AC/DC or Queen and Justin Hawkins, the lively singer, got the audience to jump along with him until the very end.

His t-shirt said ?Rockers Elite? and the Darkness showed us all why the band?s first album was such a huge success.

As in the previous edition of Rock in Rio, Xutos e Pontap?s managed to gather a crowd of thousands in the valley in front of the World Stage. They ended the show in style, performing ?A Casinha?, much to the crowd?s delight who sang along. Tim, the singer, claimed that he ?must return to Rock in Rio?. We?ll be here, waiting.

On the second day of Rock in Rio-Lisboa 2006, Brazilian artist Pitty opened the World Stage, giving everyone a true lesson in rock, energizing an audience that was taken by her charm.

My 2 cents....First heard GNR 1987, saw them in concert 4 times from 89-92 (saw the famous, "If certain members of this band
dont stop dancing with Mr Brownstone, this will be our last concert...." when they opened for the Stones)..

Negative about current band/RIR5:  I agree 3 guitarists is too much...drop one of em..I dont care who.
Setlist...They've also been rather predictable/boring from UYI era onwards....Acting like its something new
is wrong.

Other than that, they look & sound great...44 yr old men run marathons...Axl just hasnt toured for so long, and
he seems to be running much more than 2002....Give it time...That issue was no big deal anyways...He sounded awesome.

The energy is no different than the old UYI tours....You cant expect the type of energy from Appetite era
at small venues like the Ritz.

GNR is back and kicking some serious ass (although a tad more boring now that Ive heard most songs 10000 times).

This things gonna explode in about 6 months....Jump on board now..

Here's another review (also posted the link in the On Tour section)

http://www.correiodamanha.pt/noticia.asp?id=203280&idselect=185&idCanal=185&p=200

The reporter appears not to have liked it too much but goes on to say the audience loved it.

-------

Rough translation:

Pic caption: To GNR lacked obejectivity and precison but, even so, the band was the one who "pleased" the 50000 crowd the most.

The wait was long (14 years) but finally, Axl Rose and his renewed Guns N' Roses
returned to Portuguese stages. Saturday's concert however, was an instable balance
between tear dropping emotion and annoying yawn, all because of the numerous and long
musical interludes (solos).

"Full/Bloated" in a fans' words, angry with the numerous breaks of rhythm by the need
to show off the technical abilities of the new members. Like the guitar instrumental of "Beautiful".

Even so, GNR were the ones who most rocked the audience of about 50000 fans, coming just for this show from all over Portugal.
Judging by the audience reaction, only Xutos - they would have been a better opeing than the Darkness who
couldn't warm up the crowd, in spite of numerous rehearsed attempts. They could only do it from time to time, with High way to Hell,
thunderstruck (AC/DC) and a short improvise of We will rock you.

With the usual delay (half an hour), Axl and Guns came up on stage with WTTJ. With a terrible sound (Axl with no voice)
hidden by the pyro that would underline the most emotional moments of the show. Those were, as expected
with the old hits. SCOM opened the parade but KOHD and especially November Rain nearly "tore the house down".
There were even some shed tears down some faces. as someone said, there are people here who were concieved at the sound of these songs.

Night train, patience abd Paradise City (at the end) were other moments of true euphoria,
since from the new songs onely "IRS" and "Better" caused real impact.

Warm, Axl thanked the crowd (you are very virtuous and even asking how many of you thought we'd be here? in an obvious reference to the "miracle" of the ressurection of the band.
The truth, however, is that in Lisbon Guns lacked obectivity and precision. A concert can't
be a parade of characters no matter how talented they are.

So, in the end, the fans were divided. Some say Guns can still make it big again, others find that to be a difficult objective.
IN the end RIR only allowed Axl to keep the flame of the desire toreturn to the good old days alight.
