Most people haven't heard Better.  The only people who have are diehard fans of GnR that will buy the album anyway and the ultimate purpose of a single is to bring attention to the band and get people to buy the album.

I agree totally. good post ok

If you think better's gonna be the 1st single than you know nothing about promotion at all.......

I'm 99,9% sure that the new single is gonna be something we haven't heard yet.? ok

promoting? explain what u r getting at. why a 'new' song. To 99 percent of people watching MTV/VH1 or whatever, they havent heard Better so it will be new to them. Like the other poster said in the above post, almost everyone that has already heard Better are diehard fans that will buy the album regardeless. So why a "new, new" song?.. it doesnt make much sense to me. Shocked

The point is that better isn?t 1st single material, its musical style stands too far from the original songs to let the old fans unite with the new fans (and that?s Geffen?s main concern). It?s a great track but more album than single material.
If the record company wants to let CD sell millions and millions (and believe me they do) the 1st single has to be something that will appeal to both new and old fans. Therefore releasing better as a 1st single would be promotional and commercial suicide. Simply cause when the new song is already played live it will kill the buzz). The fact that Guns are already playing some of the tracks doesn?t mean that they are gonna be singles.
They are not stupid, they know that these shows are going to be taped and spread all over the world.

The 1st single should and most likely will be something nobody has heard before so that the impact will be bigger when it hits the charts.

(not trying to be a smartass but I?m in a band that has a record deal and along the years I?ve I pretty much gotten to know how these things work). Then again with GnR you just never know?Huh.. Wink

The first single isn't gonna be anything we heard.

Im sure is will blow us away something we have never heard.

They need some unreal song to get everyones attention then the road is paved.

Better is definatly the first single, but The Blues should be second. The Blues has "hit song" written all over it.

Man, I cant wait till this fall!!!

I cannot get 'Better' out of my head!  I love that song!  I would be happy as a pig in ....... when you get the idea, if that was the first single, it just rocks.  I loved IRS as well.  First time I heard it all the way through at Download, loved it.  I definitely think The Blues would make an awesome single so songs for me
1.  Better
2.  IRS
3.  The Blues
4.  Some rocking kickass tune we havent heard yet!

As long as the above three plus hopefull Chinese Democracy, Madagascar and TWAT are on the album I'll be a very happy girl anyway.

God I love GNR!!!!!

I think Better has to be the first single, it's a strong enough track to interest new listeners and make the old fans of the band happy. The Blues would be great for a second single because it's a love song and could be the bands new November Rain. The third single I hope is something we haven't heard......

They should give 2 songs out to movie soundtracks as well or if Rhiad and The bedouins doesn't make the album, put that on a movie soundtrack for sure.

Axl said in 2002 that anything they play live is not going to be a single. No matter how good the new stuff we have heard is, it isn't as immediate and definitive as the lead singles off the other albums are. The first single should be different - but not TOO different - and rock like a bastard.

I used to think Better could potentially be the first single, but releasing that song as the single since we got it back in February as a demo, really wouldnt be much of a surprise to us.

Sure alot of the general public has never heard the track, or only are so now by checking out the shows, but just the same...

I see the first track being something that no one outside of the band has heard yet, whether it be a ballad, or a rocker...

& since the first single is going to need to turn alot of heads, and sell alot of albums, Im really surprised no one thinks it really could be the "best" track on the album, Gn'R chooses to use as it's first single... Undecided

RS or not, I really think it would be cool if they did a magazine cover with the new members just before CD's release.

better is def. not a poor live song.

No, but it has been performed very poor more than once.

But, that's a good thing about touring.  It gives you an opportunity to observe how people are gonna react to it.  And with the internet, you get a different perspective from people who are far away and not actually locked in the heat of adrenaline at the show, for their opinion.

So far I've seen one performance of Better I liked.  And it wasn't because of anything the band had done differently.  It was simply Axl's voice being spot on.  As I've said before, I wish they wouldn't schedule so many shows so close together to give Axl enough time to recharge his cords.  He sounded hoarse and exhausted at RIR5.

better should be released as the first single.  perfect song to introduce the new guns n roses to the masses.  of course... it would have to be edited just a tad to get radio play... but of course, the middle transition with the guitar solos has to stay.  the second single should be the blues, which shows axl can still write a great ballad... as a third single, TWAT should be released... the finished version of the song on this album is going to be a classic of epic proportions... better than november rain or estranged.  as a fourth single, they should go back to a guitar driven kick ass rock song... who knows?  we havent even heard the songs that are going to be on the album!

When people talk about unheard tracks and take flack for it I'm normally on their side because I can understand that their looking forward to hearing them as these songs have been rumoured for so long. However I totally agree on this one, how can you want those as the 3 singles they could be awful all of those song might sound like silkworms or My World, would you still want those as the 3 singles then?

The fact that they are playing Better at most of the shows makes me believe it could be the lead single, but the gap between the tour and the new album (3-4 months) makes me a little hesistant.  I really think it's hard to say since we don't know what at least half of the album sounds like and, to an even greater extent, how they are going to "position" the new sound.  Is Better really representative of CD?  Is TWAT?  Who knows!

This isn't 1987 or 1992; they aren't going to be played on MTV hundreds of times a day.  I live in Philly.  We currently have 2 radio stations that would possibly play GNR...and one of them has talk radio for at least half of the day....and we're the 4th biggest city in the US (don't quote me on that, but it's close).  What I'm getting at is that "singles" for rock records don't mean as much as they used to.  There just isn't as much mainstream exposure.  It's more exsiting fan base, word of mouth, etc.  There are exceptions like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I don't expect (nor do I hope) that GNR would be as "commercial" as that.
